Morphology-dependent Nanocatalysis: Rod-shaped Oxides

  • Nanostructured oxides are widely used in heterogeneous catalysis where their catalytic properties are closely associated with the size and morphology at nanometer level. The effect of particle size has been well decumented in the past two decades, but the shape of the nanoparticles has rarely been concerned. Here we illustrate that the redox and acidic-basic properties of oxides are largely dependent on their shapes by taking $Co_3O_4$, $Fe_2O_3$, $CeO_2$ and $La_2O_3$ nanorods as typical examples. The catalytic activities of these rod-shaped oxides are mainly governed by the nature of the exposed crystal planes. For instance, the predominant presence of {110} planes which are rich in active $Co^{3+}$ on $Co_3O_4$ nanorods led to a much higher activity for CO oxidation than the nanoparticles that mainly exposed the {111} planes. The simultaneous exposure of iron and oxygen ions on the surface of $Fe_2O_3$ nanorods have significantly enhanced the adsorption and activation of NO and thereby promoted the efficiency of DeNOx process. Moreover, the exposed surface planes of these rod-shaped oxides mediated the reaction performance of the integrated metal-oxide catalysts. Au/$CeO_2$ catalysts exhibited outstanding stability under water-gas shift conditions owing to the strong bonding of gold particle on the $CeO_2$ nanorods where the formed gold-ceria interface was resistant towards sintering. Cu nanoparticles dispersed on $La_2O_3$ nanorods efficiently catalyzed transfer dehydrogenation of primary aliphatic alcohols based on the uniue role of the exposed {110} planes on the support. Morphology control at nanometer level allows preferential exposure of the catalytically active sites, providing a new stragegy for the design of highly efficient nanostructured catalysts.

기상 TCE 제거반응용 $CrO_x/TiO_2$계 복합 산화물 촉매 디자인 (A Design Approach to $CrO_x/TiO_2$-based Catalysts for Gas-phase TCE Oxidation)

  • 순수한 아나타제 구조로 이루어진 DT51D $TiO_2$$CrO_x,\;FeO_x,\;MnO_x,\;LaO_x,\;CoO_x,\;NiO_x,\;CeO_x,\;CuO_x$와 같은 단일 산화물 촉매를 각각 5 wt.% 담지하여 모델반응으로 선택한 기상 TCE 제거반응을 수행하였으며, 이로부터 얻어진 결과를 바탕으로 $CrO_x/TiO_2$-based 복합 산화물 촉매상에서 TCE 산화반응을 연구함으로써 유해 중금속의 사용량을 최소화하기 위한 최적의 촉매 디자인 방법을 도출하고자 하였다. DT51D $TiO_2$에 담지된 여러 단일 금속 산화물들 중에서 기상 TCE 제거반응에 대하여 $CrO_x$가 가장 우수한 촉매활성을 보이는 것으로 나타났으며, 반응온도의 함수로 얻어진 TCE 제거반응의 활성은 $CrO_x$의 담지량에 의존하였다. 5 wt.% $CrO_x$-based 복합 산화물 촉매는 10 wt.% $CrO_x$만으로 이루어진 단일 산화물 촉매와 거의 동일한 수준의 TCE 제거반응 활성을 보였을 뿐만 아니라 이 복합 산화물 촉매들은 10 wt.% $CoO_x,\;MnO_x,\;FeO_x,\;NiO_x$ 등과 같은 단일 산화물 촉매들보다 높은 반응활성을 갖는 것으로 나타났다. 단일 산화물 촉매의 반응활성과 비교하였을 때 5 wt.% $CrO_x$-based 복합 산화물 촉매상에서 TCE 제거반응 동안에 얻어지는 반응활성의 증가 정도는 $420^{\circ}C$ 이하의 반응온도 기준으로 약 $10{\sim}80%$ 이상이었다. 따라서, CVOCs 제거반응을 위하여 널리 사용되고 있는 단일 $CrO_x/Al_2O_3$ 촉매보다는 $CrO_x$의 사용량을 최소화하면서도 우수한 반응활성을 얻을 수 있는 $CrO_x/TiO_2$-based복합 산화물 촉매가 보다 바람직하며 하나의 대안적인 촉매 디자인 방법으로 응용될 수 있을 것으로 생각된다.

산화물계 초전도체의 고변이 송도부근의 곡출과 이의 성분 분석에 관한 연구 (Isolation and Analysis of Micro-Regions Having Possibly Higher Tc in Oxide Superconductors)

  • 산화물 초전도체에 있어서 고천이 임계온도를 갖는 미소영역을 추출하여 이를 분석하기 위하여 La-Ba-Cu-O 계, Y-Ba-Cu-O 계 및 Bi-Pb-Sr-Ca-Cu-O 계의 초전도체를 고상법 및 nitrate solution method로 제조하였다. 제조된 시료들에 대해서 x선회절분석과 저항을 측정하였다. 이들 시료 중에서 고천이온도를 나타내는 미소부분을 Meissner효과를 이용한 추출법으로 분리 해내고 EDAX로 이를 분석하였으며, 이들 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. nitrate solution method를 적용하면 YBCO계에 있어서 비교적 단시간에 치밀한 미세조직을 갖는 천이 온도 90K의 초전도체를 제조할 수 있다. Meissner효과를 이용하여 고천이온도에서 추출해낸 미소영역의 EDAX분석 결과는 고상법을 사용한 YBCO-23S와 nitrate solution method으로 제조한 YBCO-23N 및 YBCO-36N 에서는 초기의 조성과 거의 같았으며, 고천이 온도에서 추출된 미소영역은 조성보다는 산소 결함의 차이에 기인한 것으로 생각된다. 공침법으로 제조한 YBCO-23NA 에서는 과도한 Ba의 조성을 보였으며, 천이온도 100K 인 Bi계에서는 약한 반자성효과 때문에 추출이 불가능하였다.

금강하구 표층퇴적물의 지화학적 특성에 관한 연구 (Geochemical Characteristics of Surface Sediments in the Keum River Estuary Adjacent to Coastal Area)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate geochemical characteristics of surface sediments in the Keum river estuary adjacent to coastal area. For this study we collected the 21 surface sediments samples. Mean size of surface samples was $3.24{\sim}6.65{\phi}$ on inner estuary and was $2.15{\sim}3.42{\phi}$ on outside estuary. Surface samples were composed of silt on inner estuary and were composed of sand which was more larger than $4{\phi}$ on outside estuary. Most major elements except CaO, $Na_2O$ showed good relationships between variation of contents and grain size. Contents of $Al_2O_3$, $Fe_2O_3$, MgO, $K_2O$, $TiO_2$, $P_2O_5$ and $M_nO$ were increased predominately owing to the variation of mean size of surface samples. Contents of Co, Cr, Cu, Li, Sr, Zn, La, Ce, Pb, Rb, Nd have a good relationships with grain size but Ba, Th, Sm have not. All of major and minor elements contents except $K_2O$ and Ba were less than world mean contents of shallow surface sediments but apprehend a high pollution possibility on silt sediments in the estuaries.

Catalytic Combustion of Methane over Perovskite-Type Oxides

  • Methane combustion over perovskite-type oxides prepared using the malic acid method was investigated. To enhance the catalytic activity, the perovskite oxides were modified by the substitution of metal into their A or B site. In addition, the reaction conditions, such as the temperature, space velocity, and partial pressure of the methane were varied to understand their effect on the catalytic performance. With the LaCoO3-type catalyst, the partial substitution of Sr or Ba into site A enhanced the catalytic activity in the methane combustion. With the LaBO3(B=Co, Fe, Mn, Cu)-type catalyst, the catalytic activities were exhibited in the order of Co>Fe Mn>Cu. Futhermore, the partial substitution of Co into site B enhanced the catalytic activity, whereas an excess amount of Co decreased the activity. The surface area and catalytic activity of the perovskite catalysts prepared using the malic acid method showed higher values than those prepared using the solid reaction method. The catalytic activity was enhanced with decreased methane concentration and with a decrease in the space velocity.

TFA-MOD 방법에 의한 YBCO 박막제조에서 nano size $Y_2O_3$ 첨가효과 (Effect of nano size $Y_2O_3$ addition on the superconducting properties and microstructure of YBCO thin film prepared by TFA-MOD method.)

  • The effect of the addition of the nano size $Y_2O_3$ powder on the microstructurte and superconducting properties of YBCO thin film deposited on LAO single crystalline substrate by TFA-MOD method was studied. Nano size $Y_2O_3$ powder was added to the stoichiometric precursor solution with a cation ratio of Y : Ba . Cu = 1 : 2 : 3 prepared using TFA as chelating agent. Precursor solutions with and without $Y_2O_3$ addition were coated on $LaAlO_3(100)$ single crystalline substrates by dip coating method. Calcination and conversion heat treatments were performed in controlled atmosphere containing moisture Current carrying capacity(Jc) of YBCO film was enhanced about 50% by $Y_2O_3$ doping and it is thought to be due to the better connectivity of YBCO grains and/or the flux pinning by the $Y_2O_3$ particles embedded in YBCO grains.

DCA-MOD 방법으로 제조하는 YBCO 박막의 임계전류밀도에 미치는 전구체 조성의 효과 (Effects of Precursor Composition on the $J_c$ of YBCO thin Films Prepared by DCA-MOD Method)

  • [ $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-{\delta}}$ ] films have been prepared on $LaAlO_3$ (100) single-crystal substrates by the metal organic deposition using dichloroacetate precursors (DCA-MOD). DCA precursor solutions with different composition such as; Yttrium-excess(15 at%), barium-poor(25 at%), and a stoichiometric(Y:Ba:Cu=1:2:3) were prepared in order to investigate the effects of precursor composition on the properties of YBCO films prepared by DCA-MOD method. Coated films were calcined at low temperature up to $500^{\circ}C$ in flowing humid oxygen atmosphere. Conversion heat treatment was performed $800^{\circ}C$ for 2 h in flowing Ar gas containing 1000 ppm oxygen with a humidity of 9.45%. For the film prepared using excess yttrium composition, high critical current density ($J_c$) of $>2MA/cm^2$ was obtained whereas, for the films prepared using barium-poor composition, $J_c$ was lower than $1MA/cm^2$.
