  • In this paper, we designed and fabricated High-Tc Superconducting (HTS) microstrip bandpass filters using Stepped Impedance Resonators(SIR) and studied on their characteristics. The $high-T_c$ superconducting $Y_1Ba_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$ epitaxial films were deposited by Pulse Laser Deposition (PLD) system on MgO. The fabricated filters were designed so as to operate in Ku band with central frequency 17.25 GHz, bandwidth 2.896% and ripple 0.01 dB. These filters were composed of parallel coupled microstrip SIR of which impedance ratio (K) are 0.5, 1.5. In the measured response, HTS filters had showed insertion loss below -0.5 dB. For comparison with normal conducting filter, we fabricated the Au counterpart that consists of the resonators as K=1.5 in the same dimension and measured performance of the Au filter. In comparison, HTS filter designed optimally got superior response to gold conterpart.

  • This study focused on the material characteristics and archaeometric relationship between the molten glass and bronze materials within the crucibles and gilt-bronze Bodhisattva statue excavated from the Ssangbukri site in Buyeo, Korea. Yellowish green to red brown vitreous material in the crucibles was identified as lead glass which contained scarce amount of BaO, and low $Al_2O_3$ and CaO. Metallic molten material was identified as bronze of copper-tin-lead alloy with low amount of impurities that indicated well-refined materials. Also, cassiterite was used for raw metal ore of tin. The Bodhisattva statue consisted of major copper with trace impurities in the core metal, and gold amalgam in the gilded layer. Though lead isotopic analysis showed contradictory results in each lead glass, bronze and Bodhisattva statue that required further examination, it could be stated that the statue was made in the Ssangbukri site based on the high-level technical skills of bronze production.

  • A miniature size electrostatic induction motor has been fabricated and studied with emphasis on the role of the surface resistivity, the relative dielectric constant and the charge relaxation time constant of the rotor surface materials and the rotor liner materials, which, however, control the surface charge induction and relaxation on the rotor material surface and the field intensity between the rotor and the stator of the motor. It is found that the surface resistivity and/or the relative dielectric constant, and the charge relaxation time constant of the rotor surface material enfluenced significantly to motor speed controlled by the surface charge induction and relaxation on the rotor surface depending on the applied voltage and/or frequency changing. The resistivity of the rotor liner material is also found to be effected to the motor speed greatly by control of the field intensity between the rotor and the stator and of the surface charge distribution of the induced charge on the rotor. As a result, a maximum no load rotor speed of the motor tested was about 5500 rpm at the applied voltage of 4.5 kV and the frequency of 220 Hz for the case of the rotor surface material of $BaTiO_{3}$ 80% in the resin binder layered on the copper-foil rotor liner material.

  • High $J_c$ over 1 $MA/cm^2$ YBCO film has been successfully prepared using nitrate precursors by spray pyrolysis method. Aerosol drolpets generated using a concentric spray nozzle were directly sprayed on a $LaAlO_3$(100) single crystal substrate. The cation ratio of precursor solution was Y:Ba:Cu=1:2.65:1.35. The distance between nozzle and substrate was 15 cm. Deposition temperature was ranging from $750^{\circ}C\;to\;800^{\circ}C$. Deposition pressure was 100 Torr, and oxygen partial pressure was varied from 10 Torr to 50 Torr. The microstructure, phase formation, texture development and superconducting properties of deposited films were largely changed with oxygen partial pressure. Deposited films showed a texture with(001) planes parallel to substrate plane. High quality film was obtained when film was deposited at $760^{\circ}C$ with an oxygen partial pressure of 30 Torr. The critical current density($J_c$) of the YBCO film was 1.75 $MA/cm^2$ at 77 K and self-field.

  • The pluton rocks in Kwangyang-Seungju area consist of two mica granite, hornblende diorite, Rimunri quartz diorite, grnodiorite porphyry and granophyre. The analysis of the geochronological data by the methods of K-Ar for the hornblende from Rimunri quartz diorite and hornblende diorite show that the ages are found to be $86{\pm}3.3$ Ma and $108{\pm}4$ Ma, respectively, and K-Ar age for chlorite from the altered two mica granite which intruded by the hornblende diorite of the Bonjeong mine shows $108{\pm}4$ Ma; K-Ar age for sericite from the greisenized hornblende diorite, which is closely associated with the Bonjeong ore deposits, is dated as $94.2{\pm}2.4$ Ma. They correspond to the igneous activity of the Bulgugsa Disturbance periods in the area. In chemical feature for oxides versus silica and AFM triagular diagrams of the pluton rocks in the study area, there is a suggestion of the possibility that these rock facies area a Calc-alkali series of differentiated products by low-pressure crystal fractionation processes in $SiO_2$-undersaturated suites. Compared with hornblende diorite, andesite and granodiorite porphyry, two mica granite, Rimunri quartz diorite and granophyre exhibit a wider range of normalized REE abundance and negative Eu anomalies. Such anomalies imply more extensive feldspar fractionation during crystallization. The Rimunri quartz diorite and hornblende diorite occurring in the margin of four mines(Bonjeong, Okdong, Soungchei and Saungyeul) of this area have high contents of As, Sb, Cu and Zn which have been shown as the best indicators in hypogene gold deposits and low contents of Ba, Cr served as more sensitive indicators. And the granitoids are regarded as the rocks associated with gold and sulfide mineralization of the area.

  • We fabricated $YBa_2Cu_33O_{7-x}$(YBCO) films on(00l) $LaAlO_3$ substrates prepared by metal organic deposition(MOD) method using trifluoroacetate(TFA) solution and evaluated the effects of the humidity on the microstructure, phase purity, and critical properties. The films calcined at $430^{\circ}C$ were fired at $775^{\circ}C$ at 0%, 4.2%, 12.1%, and 20.0% humidified As gas mixed with 0.1% $O_2$. We observed that the amount of $BaF_2$ phase was effectively reduced and that a sharp and strong biaxial texture formed under a humidified atmosphere, leading to increased critical properties. For the films fired at 0% humidity, the $T_c\;and\;I_c$ were undetectably small. When the humidity was increased to 4.2%, the corresponding $T_c$(onset) and $I_c$ were increased to 90.5 K and 8 A/cm-width, respectively. For the films at the humidity range of 12.1-20.0%, the $I_c$ was found to be 35 A/cm-width. According to the results of the XRD, pole-figure, and SEM, these improved critical properties are probably attributed to the formation of a purer YBCO phase, larger grain size, and stronger c-axis orientation.

  • YBCO films have been synthesized using a spray pyrolysis method. We used nitrates of Y, Ba, Cu as precursors. Deposition was made on $LaAlO_3$ (100) single crystal substrate by spraying the mist of aqueous precursor solution generated by a concentric nozzle. The distance between concentric nozzle and substrate was 15 cm. C-axis oriented films were obtained at deposition temperature of $740{\sim}800^{\circ}C$ and working pressure of 20 Torr. Oxygen partial pressure was 3 Torr and substrate was transported with the speed ranging from 0.23 cm/min to 0.7 cm/min by reel to reel. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) observation revealed that films are smooth and highly textured with (001) planes parallel to substrate. Highest critical current density (Jc) was $1.38\;MA/cm^2$ at 77K and self-field for the film with a thickness of $0.5\;{\mu}m$ prepared at a substrate temperature of $780^{\circ}C$ and $PO_2\;=3\;Torr$. The effect of temperature on the microstructure and YBCO phase formation will be discussed.

  • A low cost YBCO oxide powder was employed as a starting precursor for MOD process. YBCO oxide is advantageous over metal acetates or TFA salts which are popular starting precursors for conventional MOD-TFA process because that YBCO oxide precursor is cheap and easy to control molar ratio. YBCO thin films were prepared by this oxide-precursor-based MOD process and annealing condition was optimized. The YBCO thin film annealed at below $780^{\circ}C$ shows no transport $I_c$ and poor microstructure. Raman spectroscopic study of YBCO thin film indicates that YBCO thin film prepared at below $780^{\circ}C$ contains a number of imperfections such as non-superconducting $BaCuO_2$ phase, cation disorder, etc. However, the YBCO thin film treated at above $800^{\circ}C$ shows improvement in microstructure and current transport properties. • We studied the trapped field properties of bulk Y-Ba-Cu-O superconductors by applying 3 T of the permanent or $Nb_3Ti$ superconducting magnet. The 28 mm circular type of YBCO bulk superconductor was prepared and then hole at the center of bulk, parallel to the c-axis, was mechanically drilled. Typical size of hole in YBCO bulk was 10 mm in diameter. In order to examine the trapped field variation in terms of different impregnated materials, a hole in YBCO bulk was filled with resin and indium respectively. The trapped field decay due to flux flow was determined in terms of time. Our preliminary result indicates the trapped field value measured on the YBCO without hole after 30 minute by applying 3 T, was 6,500 G, which is much higher than that, 4,500 G, measured on YBCO with hole. Also, we confirmed that the tendency of a trapped field decrement with time was almost the same regardless of the impregnated materials in YBCO.

  • This study investigated the geochemical characteristics of mine drainage discharged from an abandoned coal mine in the Hwasoon area. Surface water samples were collected from 23 locations along the Hancheon creek. The concentration of Zn and Cu in stream waters was highest at low pH (3.53), whereas the content of TDS and TDI was highest at high pH (7.78) due to the concentration of Ca, $HCO_3$ and $SO_4$. At the upstream site, the Ba, Fe, Mn, Zn, and $SO_4$ contents were relatively high but decreased significantly with the distance from the coal mine. On the contrary, the Na and $NO_3$ contents were low at the upstream site but increased downstream. Yellow precipitate material collected in the Hancheon consisted mainly of iron and LOI. This yellow precipitate was heated from 100 to $900^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour. With increasing temperature, the intensity of hematite peaks were sharply produced in X-ray pattern and the absorption band Fe-O of hematite increased in IR due to dehydration and melting. The yellow to brown precipitate and evaporite materials were collected by a air-dry from the acid mine water at the laboratory. After drying, the concentration of ions in the acid water samples increased progressively in oversaturation with respect to either gypsum, ferrohexahydrite or quenstedetite. The X-ray powder diffraction studies identified that the precipitated and evaporated materials after drying were well crystallized gypsum, ferrohexahydrite and quenstedetite. Diagnostic peaks used for identification of gypsum were the 7.65, 4.28, 3.03, 2.87 and 2.48$\AA$ peaks and those for ferrohexahydrite were the 5.46, 5.12, 4.89, 4.44, 4.05, 3.62, 3.46, 3.40, 3.20, 3.03, 2.94, 2.53, 2.28, 2.07, 1.88 and 1.86${\AA} peaks. The IR spectra with OH-stretching, deformation of $H_2O$and ${SO_4}^{2-}$stretching vibration include the existence of gypsum, ferrohexahydrite and quenstedetite in the precipitated and evaporite materials. In the SEM and EDS analysis for the evaporite material, gypsum with well-crystallized, acicular, and columnar form was distinctly observed.
