Schwannoma is a neoplasm of the Schwann cells of the neural sheath [1]. Malignant schwannoma is most commonly seen in the subcutis of the flank or neck area near the salivary glands [2]. It also occurs in the thoracic and abdominal cavities, spinal cord, cranial cavity, the heart, etc. Here, we incidentally found a good case of malignant schwannoma in the subcutis of the lumbar and lumbosacral region in male F344 rat during the carcinogenicity study with diisodecyl phthalate (DIDP). Therefore, we tried to report this case as a good reference of malignant schwannoma. (omitted) -
Primary canine lung tumor is very uncommon and account for only about 1% of all cancers diagnosed [1]. The average age at diagnosis is about 10 years and no breed or sex predilection has been confirmed. Almost all primary cancers of the lungs are carcinomas, the most common being adenocrcinoma. This study describes primary lung tumor in a dog that is accompanied by cerebellar metastasis with related neurologic signs. (omitted)

Histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibition has been demonstrated to change the expressions of a restricted set of cellular genes, T cells have an essential role in the pathogenesis of allergen-induced airway inflammation [1]. In recent studies, it has been demonstrated that treatment with HDAC inhibitors induces a T cell-suppressive effect [2]. The purpose of this study was to determine whether treatment with trichostatin A (TSA), a representative HDAC inhibitor, would reduce the allergen-induced airway inflammation in a mouse asthma model. Gross lesions of multifocal interstitial nephritis, often called 'white spotted kidney', can be caused by various bacterial or viral hematogenous infections [1, 2]. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is an association between these lesions in slaughter pigs and the causative agents in Jeju. (omitted) -
Cutaneous wound healing is a highly orchestrated process comprising a number of well-defined temporally overlapping phase. These include the migration of inflammatory cells to the wound site, and re-establishment of an epithelial barrier (re-epithelization), and the deposition of matrix by fibroblast [1]. We attempt to find out that active ceramic resources has effects on cutaneous wound healing. And furthermore, we investigate its related mechanism and expression of cytokines of cutaneous wound healing which is accelerated by active ceramic resources. (omitted)

Hepatic fibrosis is a common response to various chronic hepatic injuries and occurs as a consequence of the transformation of hepatic stellate cells into myofibroblasts (MFBs) producing abnormal extracellular matrix which is mainly induced by transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-
${\beta}$ ), especially TGF-${\beta}$ 1 [1,2]. As the liver becomes fibrotic, there are both quantitative and qualitative changes in several pathological markers related to the hepatic fibrosis. These fibrotic markers in liver are mainly consisted of several proteins and cytokines, but sometimes included specific type cells. The aim of this study was to detect expression and change of markers (TGF-${\beta}$ , mallory body, cytokeratin,${\alpha}$ -SMA, hypoxia, collagen) during hepatic fibrogenesis. (omitted) -
Accumulation of cholesterol may occur due to liver injury like hepatic steatosis and fibrosis as well as athrosclerosis and coronary heart disease. The aim of this study was search for protective effect of active ceramic water on experimental hepatic injury induced by high cholesterol diet(containing 1.0 % cholesterol and 0.3 % sodium cholate) in rats. Hepatitis C virus (HCV) has become a major public health issue and is prevalent in most countries. HCV infection starts frequently without clinical symptoms, and progresses in the majority of patients (70 to 85%) to persistent viremia and chronic hepatitis including cirrhosis and hepatocellularcarcinoma (HCC) [1]. Alcohol is one of the independent cofactors accelerating the development of HCC in chronic hepatitis C patients. This is of great interest because a synergy between excessive alcohol intake and HCV infection has been documented in the development of HCC in chronic hepatitis C patients [2]. The aim of this study is to investigate liver changes in ethanol feeding HCV-transgenic (Tg) mouse and to establish an animal model system. (omitted)

Osteoporosis is usually considered a disease of older women reported the rate, pattern and determinants of bone loss, far less information is available for men although it is also common in men [1,2]. The three major causes of osteoporosis in men are excessive alcohol intake, long-term glucocorticoid therapy, and hypogonadism [3,4]. In process of bone resorption, type I collagen crosslinking molecules, pyridinoline (PYD) are released into the circulation and cleared by the kidney.
$^2$ H$_2$ O as a tracer has been applied to measure synthesis rates of slow-turnover proteins and successfully applied to bone collagen synthesis, skeletal muscle and cardiac muscle in rat. The objective of this study was to examine osteoporosis and alcohol-induced changes of femur and liver in post-menopausal males using the developed method. (omitted) -

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) has been recognized as a major cause of enterically transmitted non-A, non-B hepatitis in many developing countries. The taxonomy of HEV is not clear and the virus remains unclassified. The objective of this study was to optimize conditions and procedures to detect swine HEV in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues by nested RT-PCR and compare this detection method with in situ hybridization. Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) and transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGEV) infections are considered difficult to distinguish clinically and histopathologically. Prompt differentiation between PEDV- and TGEV-associated enteritis would greatly facilitate the management of disease in countries where PEDV and TGEV are epizootic. Rapid differential diagnosis and treatment are crucial to reducing mortality and morbidity from PEDV- and TGEV-induced enteritis in piglets. The objective for this study was to develop a protocol to differentiate between PEDV and TGEV directly from formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue, using a multiplex reverse transcription-nested polymerase chain reaction (RT-nPCR) assay. Hepatitis E virus (HEV), previously referred to as enterically transmitted non-A, non-B hepatitis, is responsible for sporadic infections as well as large epidemics of acute viral hepatitis in developing countries. The disease generally affects young adults and reportedly has a mortality rate of up to 20% in infected pregnant women. HEV was once considered to be a member of the family Caliciviridae, but the unique genomic organization of HEV has led to the removal of HEV from the family and it was provisionally classified in an unassigned family of HEV-like viruses. In situ hybridization provides any cellular detail and histological architecture.[1] However, use of in situ hybridization is largely restricted to the laboratories because this technique is the greater technical complexity and expense compared with immunohistochemistry. Therefore, the objective of this study is to develop the immunohistochemistry for the detection of swine HEV from formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded hepatic tissues. (omitted)

Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae is among the most prevalent and important infectious agents associated with porcine respiratory disease complex. The airway dagame caused by M. hyopneumoniae adversely affect the pulmonary host defense mechanisms and may lead to secondary bacterial infections. Culture is considered to be the "gold standard" for diagnosis but this is a very slow and labor-intensive procedure. Isolation of M. hyopneumoniae is complicated by its fastidious nature and extremely slow growth. Thirty days of incubation may be necessary to detect the organism in primary broth cultures. The purposes of the study were (ⅰ) to develop nested PCR for the detection of M. hyopneumoniae for the detection of M. hyopneumoniae DNA in the formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded lung tissues from experimentally and naturally infected pigs and (ⅱ) to compare the utility of nested PCR with in situ hybridization. Escherichia coli strains associated with diarrhea have been divided into the following six major categories on the basis of pathogenic mechanisms: enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC), enteroinvasive E. coli (EIEC), enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC), enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC), enteroaggregative E. coli (EAggEC) and diffusely adherent E. coli (DAEC).
$\^$ 15,18/ EPEC, EAggEC, and DAEC strains were classified by their ability to produce distinct patterns of adherence to cultured epithelial cells in virto: localized (LA), aggregative (AA), and diffuse (DA) adherence. The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship of the adherence patterns with AIDA-positive E. coli isolated from diarrheic pigs. (omitted) -
Porcine circovirus (PCV) is the smallest virus that replicates autonomously in mammalian cells. PCV2 is recongized as the casual agent of postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS).[1] Although the role of PCV2 in reproductive failure requires further clarification, there have been several reports of PCV2-associated reproductive failure. Consistent clinical signs of affected farms include elevated abortion, stillbirths and fetal mummification. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of PCV2 in aborted fetuses and stillborn piglets. Second objective was to determine the distribution of PCV2 DNA and antigen in aborted fetuses and stillborn piglets by in situ hybridisation and immunohistochemistry. (omitted)

Intestinal infections are common in growing pigs and can be caused by multiple pathogens, environmental and management factors [1]. Among the most important viruses in swine enteritis are porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV), transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGEV), porcine enteric calicivirus (PECV), porcine group A rotavirus (PRV gp A) and bacteria are Escherichia coli and Salmonella spp. and protozoa is Isospora suis [1]. The DNA chip system can serve as a powerful tool that can be utilized for simultaneous detection of specific pathogenic bacteria strains and viruses [2,3]. The combination of PCR and DNA chip technology will provide a novel method for the detection of porcine enteric pathogens thus revolutionize the diagnosis and management of the disease. The aim of this study is to develop DNA chip system for the rapid and reliable detection of five major porcine enteric pathogens based on oligonucleotide DNA chip hybridization. (omitted)

There prevalence of
$\beta$ -lactamases bacteria in animals has been increased since 1990s [1]. The resistance in E coli which is mediated by$\beta$ -lactamases hydrolyze the$\beta$ -lactam ring eventually inactivate the antibiotics [2]. Generally,$\beta$ -lactamases can be classified into four main groups and eight subgroups according to their functional and structural characteristics [3]. The detection of$\beta$ -lactam antibiotic-resistant bacteria by DNA chip has been described [4]. The chip has a specific probe DNAs that contained the$\beta$ -lactam antibiotic-resistant genes which was labeled by multiplex PCR reaction with a mixture of primer sets that were designed to amplify specific gene. Here we report the susceptibility of enteropathogenic E. coli isolated from pigs in Korea using the DNA chip in detecting$\beta$ -lactam antibiotic-resistant genes. (omitted) -
Classical swine fever (CSF) is a contagious disease of swine with serious economic losses in pig industry [1]. The disease is caused by CSFV which belongs to the viruses of bovine viral diarrhea (BVDV) and border disease virus (BDV) make up the Pestivirus genus within the family Flaviviridae [2]. Attenuated Korean LOM strains were used in Korea. For these reasons a practical approach for discrimination between vaccine and field strains is needed. Here, we described the deveopment of real-time RT-PCR to discriminate between vaccine strains and Korean field viruses of CSFV. (omitted)

The parathyroid gland is probably the simplest endocrine organ in the body. The only cells of clinical significance are the parathyroid or chief cells. The primary signal that these cells listen to is calcium. Primary hyperparathyroidism is due to a parathyroid adenoma. The most common cause of hypercalcemia in veterinary medicine is hypercalcemia of malignancy associated with variety of neoplasms. Secondary hyperparathyroidism is due to a disease process, most commonly associated with renal and nutritional hyperparathyroidism. Primary and secondary hyperparathyroidism are markedly different in their clinical, laboratory, and pathogenic mechanism.

Balantidiasis is an infectious disease worldwide which is produced by a protozoan Balantidium coli. This single-celled organism is characterized by their large size ranging from 50
$\mu\textrm{m}$ to more than 500$\mu\textrm{m}$ [1] which indicated by the presence of cilia on its cell surface. The parasite occurs in the lumen of cecum and colon of swine, humans and nonhuman primates as commensal, but can turn opportunist and invade injury tissues by other diseases [2]. It is difficult to diagnose the disease clinically since they are asymptomatic [3]; and can be complicated with other disease or parasitism. Here we report the incidental findings of Balantidiasis in the lymphatic ducts of gastric lymph node of Barbary sheep (Ammotragus lervia). (omitted) -
The c-erbB2/neu oncogene (alias HER2, NEU) encoding a tyrosine kinase receptor protein, the overexpression of which correlates with a more rapid progression and a worse prognosis in human breast cancer [1]. Otherwise, this gene is still poorly investigated in veterinary oncology [2,3]. To gain insight into the patterns of c-erbB2/neu status in canine mammary tumor, we constructed one such mammary tumor tissue microarray (TMA) from 60 tumors from our lab. This enabled the amplification of c-erbB2/neu oncogene of all 60 tumors to be simultaneously analyzed by chromogenic in situ hybridization (CISH). The aim of this study was to evaluate status of c-erbB2/neu oncogene in canine mammary tumors and to correlate this status with the differentiation grade of neoplasm. (omitted)

White spot syndrome virus (WSSV) is the causative agent of a disease that has led to severe mortalities of cultured shrimps in Korea and many other countries. Since 1993, massive mortalities due to the viral infection have also occurred in the penaeid shrimps cultured in Korea. WSSV is a large, circular, double stranded (ds) DNA virus and an enveloped, ellipsoid virus with a rod-shaped nucleocapsid with flat ends. In order to identify the characteristics of this Korean isolate of WSSV, the genes for four virion proteins, VP15, VP19, VP28 and VP35 were cloned and their sequences were compared with the available pool of WSSV gene sequences in the GenBank/EMBL databases. From these comparisons, we confirm the occurrence of WSSV in Korea and deduce that, VP15, VP28 and VP35 genes are identically conserved among the Korean isolate and geographically different foreign isolates, but VP19 amino acid sequences of the Korean WSSV isolates changed valine of the foreign isolates into aspartate. The contamination of the environment with pollutants is one of the main problems of modern life, and the levels pollution in industrialized regions are giving raise to increased public concern. The mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAP kinase) are playa pivotal role in the regulation of important cellular functions by activation of specific signal transduction pathways from cell the surface to the nuclei. Three major subgroups of MAP kinases have been identified, and these comprise the extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), the c-Jun amino-terminal kinase (JNK), and the p38 MAP kinases [1-3]. Herein, we investigated the effect of regulation of phospho-JNK (p-JNK), phospho-p38 (p-p38) and phospho-ERK (p-ERK) by TCDD. (omitted)

Porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED), transmissible gastroenteritis (TGE) are an acute viral enteritis. colibacillosis by E coli is a microbial enteritic disease in suckling piglets[1]. These infectious intestinal diarrheal diseases cause severe diarrhea to suckling piglets, so that lead to enormous economical loss in swine-product industries. Ig-Top (AD Biotech, Korea) is a immunomodulator with IgY the specific yolk-antibody for PED, TGE and E. coli and oligosaccharide. The purpose of this study was to investigate protective effects against PED virus, TGE virus E.coli and in suckling piglets by oral administration of the Ig-Top. (omitted)

Carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) is known to cause liver injury characterized by centrilobular necrosis. The toxicity is thought to be exerted via cytochrome P-450-mediated metabolism of$CCl_4$ to trichloromethyl and trichloro-methylperoxy radicals, which initiates lipid peroxidation, leading to hepatocellular membrane damage [l, 2]. Our study demonstrates a therapeutic efficacy of YCY, extract of a cricket, Gryllus bimaculatus, on liver injuries induced by$CCl_4$ . (omitted) -

Mammary cancer is the most common malignant neoplasm in the bitch. It constitute 40 percent of all tumors in female dogs, which is three times higher than incidence of mammary tumors in humans[2]. Cytological differentiation between benign and malignant canine mammary tumors is difficult, however, an irregular chromatin pattern was reported to be a significant criterion for malignancy[1]. It can be estimated that approximately 30 percent of the surgically removed mammary tumors are malignant[4]. Malignant mammary tumors often have some degree of infiltrative/destructive growth into adjacent tissues and/or invasion of vessels. Malignant mammary tumors often metastasize into local lymph nodes and lungs, and less frequently into other organs[3]. Based on histological and cytological criteria, this case was diagnosed as tubulopapillary carcinoma of the mammary gland. (omitted)

This benign canine histiocytoma was the most common single tumor type, followed lipoma, adenoma, soft tissue sarcoma, mast cell tumor and lymphosarcoma [2]. Canine cutaneous histiocytoma (CCH) most commonly occur as solitary lesions, head and pinnae are prefermential sites, that undergo spontaneous regression. The histologic appearance varies greatly, depending on the age of the lesion and the degree of necrosis and secondary inflammation. The age-specific incidence rate for CCH drops precipitously after 3 years, although histiocytomas occur in dogs of all ages [5]. Their etiology and pathogenesis are unknown. This case reports the gross and histopathological findings of canine cutaneous histiocytoma of observed in a young dog with localized calcification of lingual muscle. (omitted)

Malignant fibrous histiocytomas (MFHs) is the most common type of soft tissue sarcoma in the old animal with a aggressiveness, a high local recurrence rate and significant metastatic rate, which associated with a poor prognosis. In most histologic and immunohistological studies, the tumor cells raised from a fibroblastic and/or myofibroblastic phenotype, presumably from undifferentiated mesenchymal cell origin. MFHs are usually firm and invasive, arising in the subcutis; metastasis depends on tumor grade (many are grade 3) [1,2]. The primary tumor cells are pleomorphic, varying in appearance from fusiform to round. Often nucleoli are prominent and irregular [5]. Extracellular amorphous eosinophilic material may be prominent and likely represents reactive collagen production by the tumor [5]. (omitted)
