The mineral industry of the United States is going through a challenging time. The US as an industrial nation faces with increasing demand in raw materials to fuel various industrial sectors but, at the same time, meeting environmental constraints associated with excavating and extracting these raw materials. In addition, gradual depletion of material resources. and the necessity of handling more complex forms of resources of primary origin have led to a decline in her resource productivity, once a strategic advantage of the U.S. As a result. the United States currently relies heavily upon foreign importation of various materials such as precious and strategic metals. However, since the US is the major consumer of most of these materials, the recovery of these values from scrap would help renew her position as a resource-producing nation, and ultimately help spur its domestic economy. Furthermore. recycling would also help maintain a clean environment and reduce energy consumption. In this paper. the author attempts to discuss opportunities and challenges lied ahead of the US mineral in relation to recovering their much-needed resources from secondary sources. The need and demand in various metals in the US will be reviewed and discussed. The implication of resource recovery from secondary sources will also be discussed. Extraction methods treating secondary sources are inherently different from those for primary sources. There is a need for new technologies which are metallurgically efficient and environmentally benign in treating secondary sources. Ways to meet such a need will be examined and key factors to be considered in approaching these challenges will be discussed.

1. EAF Dust in Japan - Generation and Characteristics. The quantity of dust generated from EAF shops in Japan was estimated to be 520,000 tons/year in 1999. Extremely fine dust (or fume) is formed in the EAF by metal vaporization. Its characteristics such as chemical compositions, phases, particle size, leaching of heavy metal are mentioned. 2. EAF Dust Treatment Methods in Japan. In 1999, 61% of EAF dust was treated by regional zinc recovery processing routes, 25% went to landfill disposal, 4% was reused as cement material, and 10% was treated by on-site processing routes. The problems of EAF dust treatment methods in Japan are: (1) very high treatment cost, and (2) heavy environmental load (leaching of heavy metal, emission of dioxins, depletion of disposal sites, etc). It has been much hoped for that new dust management technology would be developed. 3. New technology of EAF dust treatment in Japan. In Japan, some new technologies of EAF dust treatment have been developed, and some others are in the developing stages. Following five processes are mentioned:. (1) Smelting reduction process by Kawasaki Steel, (2) DSM process by Daido Steel, (3) VHR process by Aichi Steel, (4) On-site dust direct recycling technology, and (5) Process technology of direct separation and recovery of iron and zinc metals contained in high temperature EAF off gas by the Japan Research and Development Center fur Metals.

In addition to landfilling and incineration, waste minimization and recycling have become priorities in Taiwan's municipal waste management strategies over the past 10 years. Major recycling initiatives being implemented in Taiwan include producer responsibility, "pay-as-you-throw, " and mandatory sorting provisions. Currently, the producer responsibility regime established under the Waste Disposal Act and administered by the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) requires that manufacturers or importers of listed items, including containers, batteries. cars, motorcycles ("scooters"), tires, oil, televisions, refrigerators, air conditioners, washing machines, computers, and printers, pay recycling fees to government recycling funds. EPA then uses the recycling funds to subsidize collection and recycling. The 2001 recycling fund budget totals NT$57 billion (NT$35 = US$l). Under the producer responsibility regime, EPA-designated retailers ("sellers") must accept end-of-life items returned to them by the consumers. At the local level, Taipei City implements a pay-as-you-throw program, whereby citizens pay waste collection and treatment fees through the purchase of special trash bags approved by the Taipei City Government. However. recyclables that are separated by citizens are collected free-of-charge by the City. Taichung City and Kaohsiung City, on the other hand, enforce mandatory sorting schemes, whereby citizens face penalties if they don't separate recyclables from the trash before pick-up. These programs have resulted in a significant reduction in municipal waste. Per capita waste collected per day has dropped from 1.143 kg in 1997 to 0.978 kg in 2000. Targeting a 10% recycling rate for municipal waste in 2001. EPA plans to research and develop new recycling techniques, expand the scope of producer responsibilities, and strengthen existing municipal recyclable collection programs. To this end, among other initiatives, EPA has prepared a draft "Resource Recycling and Reuse Act" that would complement the existing producer responsibility programs by incorporating into the current recycling framework the concept of product life-cycle management.

A human being has been using more and more materials for promotion of its life level year by year. The materials are originated from the Nature. We must think that a human being temporarily borrows them from the Nature. So we should return them in the same form as the origin into the Nature. However, it is impossible because it has been irreversibly changed into different phase. This attributes destruction of the Nature, i.e., pollution of the Nature. For environmental prevention of the Nature from pollution, we should try the entire recycling of materials by returning the used materials in the safe from even if it has a different phase in comparison with the original state. This article proposes the entire recycling of materials lot keeping the EARTH.

The production of Secondary Non-ferrous Metals (SNM) is characterized by low investment, energy consumption and cost, less pollution as well as rather simple technology. In the past years, the SNM industry has seen relevantly rapid progress in China. Especially in the filed of clean hydrometallurgical treatment certain novel technologies for recovery and separation have successfully been elaborated, and a number of medium and small commercial plants established. On the basis of four common metals Cu, Al, Pb, Zn, and Ni, Co, this paper describes the status quo and progress of SNM industry in China, indicating that a lot of work should still be done in salvage of waste metals. It is recommended that measures for collecting and classifying SNM resource should be strengthened and the research on new technologies for scavenging such metals should be supported.

Following the trends around the world in the 1990's, Australia has been promoting recycling as a means to reduce wastes and at the same time improve the economics of metal processing. Of significance to the metal processing industry is the recycling of steel and aluminium, mostly from cans collected from households. The recycling of cyanide during gold processing has also been evaluated extensively, involving many R&D activities currently conducted in several laboratories and commercial plants in Australia. This paper presents an overview of the above issues, evaluating facts and data collected on metal recycling. The technologies currently developed and evaluated for cyanide recycling are also discussed.

The waste home appliances including television sets, refrigerators, washing machines and air conditioners have increasingly received environmental concerns in Taiwan. In light of the enforcement of Waste Disposal Act (WDA), the Taiwan Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) has certified 60 recycling/storage facilities and given permission for qualified companies to build six treatment plants around the island. Now the recycling and well treatment home appliances are estimated to be 3,342,369 units until May 31, 2001. This paper describes the present status of waste home appliance recycle and its treatment in Taiwan. The principle guidelines and policies regarding recycling, resource recovery and environmental concerns are presented.

Although Japan, Korea, and Taiwan are all East Asian countries, there are marked differences in the recycling policies, motivations, and methodologies of each country. One reflection of differences is the approaches each country has taken toward the OECD proposal for Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). I consider the relationship of local governments and producers for Japan, Korea, and Taiwan from the perspective of EPR. First, I provide an outline of the establishment of waste home appliances (WHA) recycling systems. And then, consider the responsibility of related subjects. Lastly, I prepare the differences of EFR concept of each country.

On July 5, 1997, environmental Protection Administration of Taiwan publicized the recycling regulation of waste home appliances that include four items, namely, television, refrigerator, washing machine, and air conditioner. It is believed that this regulation pioneers the law enforcement of waste home appliances in the world. To comply with tile policy, several contemporary waste disposal plants specialized in waste home appliances were established according to a follow-up technical specification oil the waste treatment facilities and methodology. Therefore, the traditional dismantling facilities were substituted and waste collection routes were altered as well accordingly. This study investigates the collection and recycling costs of waste home appliances in accordance with these newly established routes and facilities, respectively. Cost survey was conducted among collectors and recycling plants of waste home appliances; consequently, tire collection and recycling costs were analyzed, correspondingly. Results show that the recycling costs of waste home appliances were much higher than that of other waste items. Since the market share of recycled materials is lacking, these waste recycling plants of home appliances can only survive under the subsidy of EPA in Taiwan. Due to some arduous problems, the subsidiary system has already caused serious financial unbalance for a foundation under EPA of Taiwan, which associated with waste recycling in Taiwan.

Six recycling plants have started operation for recycling scrap home appliances since the spring of 2000 in Taiwan. The performance of the plants has not yet been measured during the 18-month period. The performance measurement, however, can be looked in several aspects. Because of the nature of these recycling plants, at least three aspects, namely government (representing general public), appliance manufacturers and owners of the recycling plants themselves should be considered in the performance evaluation. This study proposes various performance indices categorized in four groups: profitability, recyclability, automation and environment. The indices are different from the productivity and cost measures that are used in conventional manufacturing plants. Performances of three existing plants in Taiwan are evaluated as illustrative examples to demonstrate the use of the proposed measures. The practical implications of the performance indices are also discussed.

The first step for recycling the CRT bulb is to remove frist seals between the panel and funnel. For this purpose, various kinds of methods have been used. One of those is to use the nitric acid, which is a proven technology and widely used in CRT-making industries. The process. however. has a problem of NOx generation. Such a drawback can be overcome by using a new chemical. This new chemical can remove the frit without NOx generation. This paper describes the dissolution ability of the chemical for lead and zinc oxides and the application to the separation of the CRT panel from its funnel.

In Japan in of today, there is no aspect in which the quantity of waste glass bottle discharged from ordinary homes decreases. Moreover, the kind of shape and color of the waste glass bottles are increasing little by little. In the recycling of the glass bottle, it becomes a problem that many kind of the color is abounding. It is possible to use the transparent glass bottle as raw material of the glassware. Since the reproduction of the color is difficult, the colored glass bottle is not possible to use as a raw material. Therefore, the processing of these glass bottles entirely depends on the reclamation. In Japan, the security of the new reclaimed land is very difficult for the reason of the environmental damage. Moreover, the life expectancy in many reclaimed lands is anticipated with within two years. Therefore, the development of the processing method of glass bottle other than reclamation becomes a rapid problem. At present it is examined that it is used of an aggregate of the colored pavement, as one of the application methods of colored glass bottle. The particle size of produced glass aggregate is also 5mm or less, because the thickness is 5mm or less on almost glass bottles. And almost glass particles have the sharp tip. The application as the aggregate is limited for this sharpness of the particle. This study was carried out for the purpose of the establishment of sharpness measuring method of the glass aggregate particle. It is possible that the injury degree to human in the handling is known, if showing the sharpness of the aggregate particle at the objective numerical value is possible. And the application of the glass aggregate is spread. In this research, the balloon fracture method was used for the sharpness measurement of the glass particle. This method is based on the completely new idea, and it is possible to express completely the possibility of injury to the human. It is reported with the detailed result in full paper, because this study is continuous in order to get the JIS which is industrial standard of Japan.

According to the EPA in Taiwan report, 9.05 million metric tons of solid wastes were generated in 1999, and the waste glass was accounted of 4.95 percent. However, with the increasing tonnage of disposal cost and existing disposal sites are reaching full capacity, recycling is currently accepted as a sustainable approach to waste management. Therefore, it's essential and urgent that the government in Taiwan establish the recycling and recovery framework for the minimization of the solid waste, reduction of materials and energy consumption, and the encouragement for the reuse, recycle and recovery development. To achieve this Boal, Taiwan has been strived for a long period of time in waste glass recovery and recycle. Waste glass, unlike other kinds of resource waste, is 100% recyclable. The EPA in Taiwan now center on a lot of different kinds of waste glass, such as glass container, flat glass, CRT glass, windshields glass, fluorescent lamps, and waste pesticide glass container. This article will focus on the framework of the recycling market access, and also try to provide some strategies to improve waste glass recycling efficiently.

A demand for the aggregates is increasing in the field of civil and architectural industry and so on. In these industries, the particle size and shape of aggregates are important factors and especially spherical or rounded particles are desired. In Japan, waste glass is used as one of the aggregate materials for the pavement or the construction. In this study based on the frictional action of material on each other, an autogenous grinding of silica glass with a stirred mill were carried out in order to eliminate flakelike or squarish particles and get spherical or rounded ones for aggregate materials. The autogenous grinding experiments were conducted by applying loads to the particle layer of silica glass. The particle shape was evaluated by the shape index, N/T and the degree of circularity, Ψ$_{ci}$ . The unfractured particles (20~13mm) were evaluated by N/T and Ψ$_{ci}$ , and the products (finer than 10${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ ) by Ψ$_{ci}$ . As a result, N/T of the unfractured particles decreased with an increase of grinding time. Ψ$_{ci}$ of the unfractured particles and the products increased with an increase of grinding time (; progress of grinding), and became almost constant in the long time grinding. These tendencies were not changed by the applied load on the particle layer, but the limit value of Ψ$_{ci}$ at the products were varied with the applied load.plied load. -
Restoration of contaminated soils to an environmentally acceptable condition is important. One of the newer techniques in soil remediation is a method based on electrokinetic phenomena in soils. The technology uses electricity to affect chemical concentrations and water flow through the pores of soils. An important advantage of electrokinetic soil remediation over other in-situ processes such as soil flushing is the capability of control over the movement of the contaminants. Because the migration of the contaminants is confined by the electric field, there is little dispersion outside the treatment zone. Furthermore, the process is effective for soils with low and variable permeability. In the present study, the distributions of cadmium in the electrokinetic processing of kaolinite under the condition of constant applied voltage are investigated. Cadmium accumulates near the cathode without reducing the diffusion of hydroxide ion into the soil. In keeping the catholyte pH at neutrality, cadmium migrates toward the cathode without any accumulation of cadmium near the cathode and is successfully removed at the cathode reservoir. It was also found that the progress of electrokinetic processing of cadmium could be gasped to a certain extent by monitoring the local voltage and the current density.

Recently, an excavated soil-recycling machine has been receiving considerable attentions. The mobile type excavated soil-recycling machine is able to improve the soils by adding the additives such as slaked lime and cement at the construction site. However, not only the mechanical factors such as paddle inclination angle and pitch of the paddle but also the physical properties of the excavated soils affect the mixing performance of the excavated soils and additives. In this sense, experimental investigations are uneconomical and ineffective. This paper concerns with the numerical simulator to analyze the mixing behavior of excavated soils and additives in the soil-recycling machine with dual shafts in order to assist the economical and effective design of the optimum soil-recycling machine. By using the simulator, several simulations were carried out, and the effects of some mechanical parameters such as the paddle inclination angle and pitch of the paddle on the mixing performance were made clear.

Gypsum has been known as a prominent material for improving alkali soil, and this material can be supplied easily in large scale by recycling waste gypsum plasterboard from construction and demolition sites in advanced countries. In April 2000, in the part of western Jilin Province in China, where alkali soil spread vastly, we conducted a cultivating experiment of corn and rice after treating with granule recycled waste gypsum at six alkali soil fields which total area were 14000
$m^2$ . We confirmed that pH of soil decreased in a short period and alkali soil changed soft a desirable condition for farm work, and furthermore, gypsum caused to accelerate the growth of a plant, both corn and rice. -
Formation of stoichiometric lithium-, nickel-, and zinc- ferrites by calcining organo-metallic precursors a temperature below 40
$0^{\circ}C$ is examined using DTA/TG, and XRD techniques. It attempts to simulate th immobilization of metal ions in industrial liquid influents (waste) through the synthesis of stoichiometric spinel ferrites (SSF). Two steps of the SSF formation during thermal treatments are noted. The transformation of magnetite to${\gamma}$ - Fe$_2$ O$_3$ and subsequent first formation of SSF were observed at temperatures ranging from 200 to 45$0^{\circ}C$ . Th formation of cation-containing${\gamma}$ -Fe$_2$ O$_3$ and subsequent second formation of the ferrite occurred at temperature ranges of < 45$0^{\circ}C$ and 500 to$650^{\circ}C$ , depending on the heating rate used. Then the temperature range of 200t 45$0^{\circ}C$ is critical to the performance of the technique, because a calcination at the range would lead to a complete formation of SSF, avoiding the occurrences of${\gamma}$ -Fe$_2$ O$_3$ and ion-containing${\gamma}$ -Fe$_2$ O$_3$ . If not, so$\alpha$ -Fe$_2$ O$_3$ would occur. And annealing at temperature above$650^{\circ}C$ must be employed by which solid-state reactio of$\alpha$ -Fe$_2$ O$_3$ with metal ions (possibly metal oxides) to form SSF can be conducted. -
Waste office paper, photocopied or laser printed, has recently increased along with office automatization. In waste office paper, toner ink is used as the printing medium in place of conventional oil ink. Since toner ink cannot be saponificated by alkali and be decolored by bleaching, different from the case of oil ink, toner remains on regenerated paper as black specks. Although cascade recycling of waste office paper is compelled at present, the demand for low-grade paper is limited. From such circumstances, a new separation process for waste office paper is demanded to achieve parallel recycling. At the first stage of separation studies, the sharpness of separation is evaluated using small separators to obtain fundamental data. In a lab-scale separator, the sample amount of one feed is generally a few grams. However, the sample amount used for brightness, ERIC, and image analysis that are generally used to evaluate the efficiency of deinking are not small for lab-scale tests of these analyses. This paper describes an investigation of a sheet preparation method by a small amount of sample under 0.5g and compares the precision of toner content determination of spectroscopic analysis and image analysis from the viewpoint of separation evaluation. The easiness and convenience of the operation using only general-purpose equipments has also been set as a principle purpose. From the viewpoint of an analysis that yields high precision with a small amount of sample in short time, the method calculating the absorption coefficient from diffuse reflectance in the visible region is the most rational method in this study.

The present study has been conflicted to verify the applicability of tire powder and food waste compost as biofilter materials to degrade volatile organic compounds. Batch and column tests were performed to determine the optimum ratio of tire powder to compost and the appropriate mixing type of two materials for removal of the selected VOCs, i.e., benzene, ethylbenzene, PCE, and TCE. According to batch tests, tire powder and compost mixture had faster removal rate than the compost. The biofilter column filled with tire powder and compost showed better VOC removal efficiency than that filled with only tire powder. In this study, the best removal rate was observed in the sandwich type column test of which the tire : compost weight ratio was 1:2

Pakistan being the 6
$^{th}$ largest sugar producer has over 75 sugar mills with annual production capacity of about 2.4 million tons during 1996-97. The contribution of Sindh with 27 sugar mills is recorded over 50% of the total sugar production. The majority of the mills in Pakistan use the Defecation-Remelt-Phosphitation (DRP; 24 mills), Defecation-Remelt-Carbonation (DRC; 21 mills) and Defecation-Remelt Carbonation and Sulphitation (DRCS; 11 mills) process. Seven of the 75 sugar mills in Pakistan also produce industrial alcohol from molasses, a by- product of sugar manufacturing process. These sugar industries also produce fly ash, which have been found to contain unburned carbon and reach as far as four-kilo meter area with the wind direction, threatening the community health of people living around, besides posing other aesthetic problems. The untreated wastewater, in many cases, finds its way to open surface drains causing serious threat to livestock, flora and fauna. One study showed that fly ash emitted from the chimneys contain particle size ranging from 38${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ to 1000${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ . About 50 per cent of each fly ash samples were above 300${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in size and were mostly unburned Carbon particles, which produced 85% weight loss on burning in air atmosphere at 1000${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ . This fly ash (mostly carbon) was the main cause of many health and aesthetic problems in the sugar mill vicinity. The environmental challenge for the local sugar mills is associated with liquid waste gaseous emission and solid waste. This paper discusses various waste recycling technologies and practices in sugar industries of Pakistan. The application of EM technology and Biogas technology has proved very successful in reusing the sugar industry wastewater and mud, which otherwise were going waste. -
According to the requirement of cyanide precipitation-purification technology, adopt the acidized sulfate to precipitate cyanide. Studying the influence of acidity and the dosage of sulfate on precipitation rate of impurity ion in cyanide wastewater, and, on the basis of synthetic precipitation experiments, we obtain principle process of cyanide precipitation-purification to technology.

A study has been made on the recovery of nitric acid and valuable metals such as Cu, Sn, Pb from the spent nitric etching solutions. The nitric acid was extracted effectively by TBP but the heavy metals such as Fe, Cu, Sn, Pb were not extracted by TBP from the spent nitric etching solutions. From the experimental results, 95% of nitric acid in spent etching solution was extracted at O:A ratio of 3:1 with five stage by 60% TBP and 98% of nitric acid was stripped from the loaded organic phase at O:A ratio of 1:1 with four stages by distilled water. After extracting nitric acid, Cu was recovered as a metal by electrowinning effectively and Sn was successfully removed by precipitation method by adjusting the pH of raffinate solution. Finally, Pb was recovered by cementation with iron scrap at
$65^{\circ}C$ . Parameters controlling the cementation process, such as temperature, pH and the effect of the additives were investigated. -
In this study, to improve the color of iron oxide from waste pickling acid at the cold rolling mill, quality control technologies to improve color were investigated. During operation of the spray roaster, the charge amount of waste acid per hour, temperature, and numbers of spray nozzles were investigated. At the admixing process, titanium oxide, silica, and goethite were tested. The color character of iron oxide can be improved by process control of the spray roaster and the admixing process at a pigment factory. Iron oxide from this study is appropriate for use as a colorant of a concrete product.

This paper describes on the fabrication of Fe-Co hydrophilic magnetic fluids from the waste pickling liquor of steel. By adding with HNO
$_3$ in the waste liquor oxidation is proceeded from Fe$^{3+}$ ion at 6$0^{\circ}C$ with air blowing. Ultra-fine Co-ferrite particles with the mean particle size of 50$\AA$ were produced at pH 12 after adjusting the ratio of Fe$^{3+}$ Co$^{2+}$ =7/3(wt%) and Fe-Co particles with the mean particle size of 94$\AA$ were produced by reducing the Co-ferrite particle with H$_2$ at the temperature of 50$0^{\circ}C$ . After triple adsorption of oleic acid dodecyl benzene sulfonate(D.B.S.) and tetra methyl ammonium(T.M.A.) ions on the surface of Fe-Co particles Fe-Co hydrophilic magnetic fluid was produced by dispersing the Fe-Co particles in ethylene glycol solution. The magnetization of the Fe-Co hydrophilic magnetic fluid increased with increasing the Fe-Co concentration. The magnetic fluid containing 70% (g/cc) Fe-Co showed 73 emu/g in magnetization at the magnetic intensity of 10 kOe.kOe.e. -
The heat treatment of PVC film containing PVC 65%, DOP(Dioctyl Phthalate) 32% as plasticizer, Ca-Zn stearates and surface agent was peformed under several conditions to study the degradation behavior of PVC sheet. In the case of H
$_2$ SO$_4$ , the dehydrochlorination was ca.100% at 25$0^{\circ}C$ for 3h. The char involving the smaller pores was produced with hydrothermal treatment. The pore size became small with increasing the treatment time and temperature. In the case of treatment with Ca(OH)$_2$ , the sizes of pores produced in char were about sever ~ 10${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ at 2$25^{\circ}C$ for 12h. In the case of H$_2$ SO$_4$ , the size of pores were about 1${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in 5M H$_2$ SO$_4$ for 12h. -
A novel fluidized-bed reactor was designed and installed for bioleaching in a semi-continuous way, by which a process for bioleaching-cyanidation of Guangxi Jinya refractory gold arsenical concentrate was studied. An arsenic extraction rate reaches 82.5% after 4-day batch biooxidation of the concentrate under the optimized condition of pH 2.0, ftrric ion concentration 6.5g/L and pulp concentration 10%. And leaching rate of gold in the following gold cyanidation is over 90%. The parameters of three series fluid-bed reactors exhibit stability during the semi-continuous bioleaching of the concentrate. Arsenic in the concentrate can be got rid of 91% after 6-day leaching. Even after 4 days, 82% of arsenic extraction rate was still obtained. The recovery rates of gold are 92% and 87.5% respectively in cyaniding the above bioleached residues. The results will provide a base for further commercial production of gold development.

The main purpose of this study is to generate a fine copper oxide powder of high purity, with a compact structure and a uniform particle size by a spray pyrolysis process. The raw material is a waste copper chloride solution formed in the manufacturing process of Print Circuit Board (PCB). This study also examines the influences of various factors on the properties of the generated powder. These factors include the reaction temperature, the inflow speed of the raw material solution, the inflow speed of the air, the size of the nozzle tip, and the concentration of the raw material solution. $0^{\circ}C$ to 100$0^{\circ}C$ , the particle size of the generated powder increases accordingly, and that the structure of the powder becomes much more compact. When the reaction temperature is 100$0^{\circ}C$ , the particle size of the generated powder increases as the concentration of copper in the raw material solution increases to 40g/l, decreases as the concentration increases up to 120g/l, and increases again as the concentration reaches 200g/1. In the case of a lower concentration of the raw material solution, the generated powder appears largely in the form of CuO. As the concentration increases, however, the powder appears largely in the form of CuCl. When the concentration of copper in the raw material solution is 120g/1, the particle size of the generated powder increases as the inflow speed of the raw material solution increases. When the concentration of copper in the raw material solution is 120g/1, there is no evident change in the particle size of the generated powder as the size of the nozzle tip and the air pressure increases. When the concentration is 40g/1, however, the particle size keeps increasing until the air pressure increases to 0.5kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ , but decreases remarkably as the air pressure exceeds 0.5kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ . -
The materials processing factors such as remelting and casting, heat treatment and microstructure, sheet rolling and can body forming in the aluminum can-to-can recycling procedure have been investigated. Aluminum used beverage can(UBC) was remelted together with virgin aluminum. The ceramic filter was used during casting to remove large impurities. As-cast microstructure was composed of large intermetallic compound (mainly
$\beta$ -phase) distributed in the aluminum matrix. By heat treatment,$\beta$ -phase was transformed to$\alpha$ -phase which was also formed from$Mg_2$ Si particles. The heat treated ingots were hot-rolled at 48$0^{\circ}C$ and cold-rolled to thin sheets. Can making from this thin sheets was successful and earing was measured after can making. There was a critical cold reduction rate for minimum earing. Some cracks were initiated from the impurity particles which was not removed during filtering. -
The chloride volatilization method for the recovery of zirconium and removal of uranium from zirconium containing metallic wastes formed in spent fuel reprocessing was studied using the simulated alloy waste, i.e. the mixture of Zr foil and UO
$_2$ /U$_3$ O$_{8}$ powder. When the simulated waste was heated to react with chlorine gas at 350- l00$0^{\circ}C$ , the zirconium metal changed to volatile ZrCl$_4$ showing high volatility ratio (Vzr) of 99%. The amount of volatilized uranium increases at higher temperatures causing lowering of decontamination factor (DF) of uranium. This is thought to be caused by the chlorination of UO$_2$ with ZrCl$_4$ vapor. The highest DF value of 12.5 was obtained when the reaction temperature was 35$0^{\circ}C$ . Addition of 10 vol.% oxygen gas into chlorine gas was effective for suppressing the volatilization of uranium, while the volatilization ratio of zirconium was decreased to 68% with the addition of 20 vol.% oxygen. In the case of the mixture of Zr foil and U$_3$ O$_{8}$ , the V value of uranium showed minimum (44%) at 40$0^{\circ}C$ with chlorine gas giving the highest DF value 24.3. When the 10 vol.% oxygen was added to chlorine gas, the V value of zirconium decreased to 82% at$600^{\circ}C$ , but almost all the uranium volatilized (Vu=99%), which may be caused by the formation of volatile uranium chlorides under oxidative atmosphere.ere. -
Present states on reutilization of metal-bearing solid wastes in China including metal-containing gangue, red mud, nonferrous metallurgical slag or residue, arsenical slag, steel - iron slag, waste batteries, were described in detail. The wastes pile up at a large quantity, resulting in seriously potential harm to environment. Most of these wastes, however, contain valuable metals, which are regarded as important secondary resources for extracting metals. Waste slag and batteries with a high grade of metals are treated by a hydro-based and / or pyre-based method for extracting valuable metals. While gangue and waste slag with a low grade are as a raw material in architecture field. In the future, a novel technology, such as high-grads magnetization separation technique and biological technique, will be designed to treat these wastes for protecting environment and recycling valuable components. These wastes, furthermore, are synthetically reutilized to produce various architectural materials, including glass and ceramics.

Magnetic separation and sulphidization-flotation for recovery of nickel and copper from two types of scraped condenser wastes, containing 8- l4% nickel and 2-4% copper, were studied. The effects of magnetic field intensities, classification, and grinding on the recovery of nickel and copper were investigated. According to the characteristics of nickel and copper in the scraps, classification-magnetic separation, different magnetic field intensities, and stages-grinding-cleaning of rough concentrate were investigated. The nickel concentrates containing 38-65% nickel with 84-97% recoveries and the copper concentrates containing 25-43% nickel with 35-60% recoveries were obtained by classification-magnetic separation. In addition, copper concentrates containing 26-45% copper with 76-88% recoveries were obtained by sulphidization-flotation from magnetic tailings and middling products.

This study was carried out to recover gold, silver and other valuable metals from the printed circuit boards (PCB) of waste computers. PCB samples were crushed to under 1mm by a shredder and initially separated into 30% conducting and 70% non-conducting materials by an electrostatic separator. The conducting materials, which contained the valuable metals, were then used as the feed material for magnetic separation where it was found that 42% was magnetic and 58% non- magnetic. The non-magnetic materials contained 0.227mg/g Au and 0.697mg/g Ag. Further leaching of the non-magnetic component using 2.0M sulfuric acid and 0.2M hydrogen peroxide at 85
$^{\circ}C$ extracted more than 95% copper, iron, zinc, nickel and aluminium. Au and Ag were not extracted in this solution, however, more than 95% of Au and 100% of Ag were selectively leached with a mixed solvent (0.2M ammonium thiosulfate, 0.02M copper sulfate, 0.4M ammonium hydroxide). Finally, the residues were reacted with a NaCl solution to leach out Pb while sulfuric acid was used to leach out Sn. Recoveries reached 95% and 98% in solution, respectively. -
Porous structures of aluminum foam have been studied by using return aluminum scrap. The apparent foam shape, foam height, density, pore size and their distributions in various section areas of the experimental samples have been investigated. The sample have been cast into metallic mold, using aluminum foam prepared from a precursor based on pure Al ingot and return aluminum scrap mixed with various amounts of 1-2wt% increasing viscosity and foam agent materials. The process provides for flexibility in design of foam structures via relatively easy control over the amount of hydrogen evolution and the drainage processes which occur during foam formation. This is facilitated by manipulating parameters such as the foaming agent, thermal histories during solidification and mix melt viscosities. A metal for producing the foamed are decomposing a foaming agent in a molten metal such that there is an initial and a subsequent expansion due to foaming agent. It has been found that the Al porous foaming with variation amount of 1∼2wt% foam agent and at 2min holding time, which melting temperature has appeared homogeneous pore size at 650∼700
$^{\circ}C$ . The compression strength were 10-13 kg/min at 125ppi, and increased by higher pore density. The acoustical performance of the panel made with the foamed aluminum is considerably improved; its absorption coefficient shows NRC 0.6-0.8. It has been found that the Al foam is very preferable for the compactness of the thermal system. -
Aluminum dross should be recycled in consideration of characteristics of the dross and its reutilization after processing. In this study, aluminum dross generated in the domestic secondary aluminum industry was processed to use it as raw material for producing aluminum hydroxide. Sample dross was classified according to its size. The dross smaller than 1mm was leached with sodium hydroxide solution to extract the remaining aluminum from the dross into the solution, and then aluminum hydroxide precipitate was recovered from the leach liquor. Purity of the obtained aluminum hydroxide was above 98 percent, and particle size of the sample was in range of 3-39
${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ . From the result, it was suggested that this process could be applicable to recycling of aluminum dross. -

Aircraft industry is developed very fast so titanium scrap was generated to manufacture. Titanium scrap was wasted and used to deoxidize cast iron so we are study recycling of it. In this research were studied that metal hydride of reacted in hydrogen chamber of AMS4900, 4901, return scrap titanium alloy and sponge titanium granule. The temperature of hydrogenation was 40$0^{\circ}C$ in the case of pure sponge titanium but return scrap titanium alloy were step reaction temperature at 40$0^{\circ}C$ and 50$0^{\circ}C$ , and after the hydride of titanium alloy were crushed by ball mill for 5h. Titanium hydride contains to 4wt.% of hydrogen theoretically as theory. It was determined by heating and cooling curve in reaction chamber. The result of XRD was titanium hydride peak only that it was similar to pure titanium. Titanium hydride Powder particle size was about 45${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ , and recovery ratio was 95w% compared with scrap weight for a aluminum foam agent. -
Impurities removal from waste carbon black was carried out to produce high-grade carbon black. A lot of hydrophilic carbon black is produced as a byproduct of the hydrogen production process by flame decomposition of water. Due to its impurity content such as sulphur, iron, ash and etc., it can only be used as low-grade carbon or burnt out. High-grade hydrophilic carbon black is 3-5 times more expensive than oil-based carbon black because of its process difficulties and requires pollutant treatment. Hydrophilic carbon is normally used far conductive materials for batteries, pigment for plastics, electric wire covering, additives for rubber, etc.. In these applications, hydrophilic carbon must maintain its high purity. In this study magnetic separation, froth flotation and ultrasonic treatment were employed to remove impurities from the low-grade hydrophilic carbon black. As results, the ash, iron and sulphur content of product decreased to less than 0.01wt.%, 0.0lwt.% and 0.3wt.% respectively, and the surface area of product was about 930
$m^2$ /g. -
Waste tires are a significant problem with the increasing in number of automobiles. Therefore, many researches have been studied on this field. Recycling is the one of the popular method aspect to environmental and economical in the treatment methods of the waste tire, which loads that the reuse of scrap tire rubber has been a challenge in the past. However, it is not easy method to melt down and mold into new products because the in rubber is a cross-linked polymer. Most difficulty in recycling is the recycled product is not economic. Therefore, the goal of this study is to develop the high valuable products for reused waste tires. In this paper, we try to make an economic recycled technology using scrapped waste tires. This technology may applied for manufacturing the end products such as a rubber block and a ballast mat for high-speed train.

There are about 41% (by weight) of scrap tires were pulverized to produce rubber powder and granules in the tire recycling industry of Taiwan. However, the reuse of the by-products, steel and fiber, of the scrap tires still needs to be improved. It is difficult to remove the remaining rubber on the surface of steel or fiber. This problem reduce the availability for further reuse of steel and fiber. In addition to the improvement of magnetic, gravity separation techniques or carbonization process, using cryogenic shredding process to separate rubber and fiber (or steel) had been used as another alternative. Cryogenic shredding process for scrap tires showed many advantages, the objective of this paper is to explore the mechanisms for the cryogenic shredding process of scrap tires. Cryo-SEM is used to investigate the topographic information, in-situ, from room temperature to -195
$^{\circ}C$ . One square inch shredded tire chips are prepared for SEM study. The percentage of the shrinkage of rubber is also estimated, ca. 6.7%. Mechanisms of cryogenic shredding effects on the tire chips are discussed. The proper practice of cryogenic shredding process far scrap tires is also suggested. -
There are more than 15 millions cars or motors in Taiwan. According to the statistics from Environmental Protection Administration, the number of resulting scrap tires are near 110 thousand tons each year. The tire recycle programs in Taiwan were first conducted in 1989 and executed by ROC Scrap Tire Foundation. However, the current efficiency of the tire recycling industry still needs to be improved to minimize the environmental problem or fire hazards caused by scrap tires storage. Ten major tire-recycling factories are surveyed in this study. The investigations include the source of scrap tire, the shredding process, the market of products, the management of wastes disposal, and the difficulties of these sectors. As the varieties of the shredding machines of the recycle factories, there are three kinds of final products which include powder, granular, and chips. The wastes, wires and fibers, produced by the shredding process are the major problems fur all the factories. The percentage of the wire and fiber removal from rubbers still needs to be increased. The best approaches found in this study to increase the efficiency of scrap tire recycling processes are proposed which include the improvement of magnetic separation system fiber/rubber separation system and the minimization of waste disposal. A categorized standard of the processing outputs is suggested as a reference for the decision-making of the tire-recycling factories.

In this study, the compound materials of GRT/plastics (HDPE, LLDPE, LDPE, PP and PS) were developed. Their tensile strength, strain at yield and flexural modulus according to the change in CRT content were measured. And, the physical properties of the compound materials that the GRT content was changed in the waste vinyl HDPE and pure HDPE were measured, compared and analyzed. If tile GRT is added to PE plastics, the physical properties were superior to those of PP and PS, and in the case of HDPE, the waste vinyl HDPE had superior physical properties by the GRT content to the pure HDPE.

Recycling process involving mechanical, thermal, hydrometallurgical, and sol-gel step has been applied to recover cobalt and lithium from spent lithium ion batteries and to synthesize LiCoO
$_2$ from leach liquor as cathodic active materials. Electrode materials containing lithium and cobalt could be concentrated with 2-step thermal and mechanical treatment. Leaching behaviors of the lithium and cobalt in nitric acid media was investigated in terms of reaction variables. Hydrogen peroxide in 1 M HNO$_3$ solution turned out to be an effective reducing agent by enhancing the leaching efficiency. O f many possible processes to produce LiCoO$_2$ , the amorphous citrate precursor process (ACP) has been applied to synthesize powders with a large specific surface area and an exact stoichiometry. After leaching used LiCoO$_2$ with nitric acid, the molar ratio of Li/Co in the leach liquor was adjusted at 1.1 by adding a fresh LiNO$_3$ solution. Then, 1 M citric acid solution at a 100% stoichiometry was also added to prepare a gelatinous precursor. When the precursor was calcined at 95$0^{\circ}C$ for 24 hr, purely crystalline LiCoO$_2$ was successfully obtained. The particle size and specific surface area of the resulting crystalline powders were 20 пm and 30$\textrm{cm}^2$ /g, respectively The LiCoO$_2$ powder was proved to have good characteristics as cathode active materials in charge/discharge capacity and cyclic performance. -
Nomura Kohsan Corp. is producing oxides, such as ZnMn
$_2$ O$_4$ , ZnFe$_2$ O$_4$ , and ZnO, by burning the used dry manganese cells and by sorting out the remnant materials. It is possible to use the recycled materials of the spent dry batteries as the raw materials of deflection yoke cores. Making hish roasting temperature in the recycling system has an effect in reduction of the impurities. As a result, the loss of the cores using the recycled materials is lower. When using the recycled materials, it is required to add Mg (OH)$_2$ . ZnO, and Fe$_2$ O$_3$ in order to rectify the composition of the MnMgZn ferrite for deflection yoke core applications. Furthermore, in order to disappear ZnMn$_2$ O$_4$ in the formation, it is necessary to control at higher calcining temperatures. The MnMgZn ferrite of using the recycled materials becomes Toss equivalent to the conventional material. TDK Corp. is manufacturing the deflection yoke cores from 1996 using the material recycled from the spent dry batteries. -
A novel technology for recycling valuable metals contained in waste dry-battery by vacuum metallurgy was devised by theoretical analysis. On the condition of the total chamber pressure of 1.013
$\upsilon$ 10$^1$ Pa, Hg, Cd and Zn are distilled in the temperature range of 773~973K, Pb is volatilized in the range of 1173~1273K while Mn, Cu, Fe and C are remained in residual. MnO$_2$ and ZnO are reduced by carbon in waste dry-battery in 773~1273K. Pure metals including Zn, Cd, Hg and Pb can be recovered respectively from their mixed vapor by fractional condensation. Metal Cu and MnO$_2$ can be obtained from the residual by hydrometallguical method. The technology can eliminate the pollution of Cd, Hg and Pb to environment. -
The rapid development of communication equipment and information processing technology has led to a constant improvement in cordless communication. Lithium ion batteries used in cellular phones and laptop computers, in particular, have been in the forefront of the above revolution. These batteries use high value added raw materials and have a high and stable energy output and are increasingly coming into common use. The development of the material for the negative terminal has led to an improvement in the quality and efficiency of the batteries, whereas a reduction in the cost of the battery by researching new materials for the positive anode has become a research theme by itself. These long life batteries, it is being increasingly realized, can have value added to them by recycling. Research is increasingly being done on recycling the aluminum case and the load casing for the negative diode. There are several steps such as slicing, lapping, chemical etching and mechanical polishing in the silicon wafer production process. The chemical etching step is necessary to remove damaged layer caused In the slicing and lapping steps. The typical etching liquor is the acid mixture comprising nitric acid, acetic acid and hydrofluoric acid. At present, the waste acid is treated by a neutralization method with a high alkali cost and balky solid residue. A solvent extraction method is applicable to separate and recover each acid. Acetic acid is first separated from the waste liquor using 2-ethlyhexyl alcohols as an extractant. Then, nitric acid is recovered using TBP(Tri-butyl phosphate) as an extractant. Finally hydrofluoric acid is separated with the TBP solvent extraction. The expected recovered acids in this process are 2㏖/l acetic acid, 6㏖/1 nitric acid and 6㏖/l hydrofluoric acid. The yields of this process are almost 100% for acetic acid and nitric acid. On the other hand, it is important to recover and reuse the metal values contained in various industrial wastes in a viewpoint of environmental preservation. Most of industrial products are made through the processes to separate impurities in raw materials, solid and liquid wastes being necessarily discharged as industrial wastes. Chemical methods such as solvent extraction, ion exchange and membrane, and physical methods such as heavy media separation, magnetic separation and electrostatic separation are considered as the methods for separation and recovery of the metal values from the wastes. Some examples of the application of solvent extraction to the treatment of wastes such as Ni-Co alloy scrap, Sm-Co alloy scrap, fly ash and flue dust, and liquid wastes such as plating solution, the rinse solution, etching solution and pickling solution are introduced.

Large amounts of orange juice are produced in Japan every yea.. Accompanied by the production of orange juice, large amount of juice residues are also generated in nearly the same amounts with juice. Although, at present, some of these residues are marketed as a feed for cattle after drying and mixing with lime, the marketing price is lower than its production cost and the difference is paid by the consumers as a part of the price of orange juice. In the present work, we developed new innovative use of orange juice residue, a biomass waste, as adsorption gel for removing toxic heavy metals such as lead. arsenic, selenium and so on as well as radioactive elements such as uranium and thorium from environments. The major components of orange juice residue are cellulose. hemicellulose and pectin, which are converted into pectic. acid, an acidic polysaccharide, by means of saponification with concentrated sodium hydroxide solution. In the previous work, we found that crosslinked pectic acid gel strongly an selectively adsorbs lead over other metals such as zinc an copper. On the other hand. it is well known that polysaccharides such as cellulose can be easily phosphorylated and that phosphorylated polysaccharides have high affinity to uranium and thorium as well as some trivalent metals such as ferric iron and aluminum. Taking account of the noticeable characteristics of these polysaccharides, 2 types of adsorption gels were prepared from orange juice residue: one is the gel which was prepared by saponificating the residue followed by crosslinking with epichlorohydrin and another is that prepared by crosslinking the residue followed by phosphorylation. The former gel exhibited excellent adsorptive separation behavior for lead away from zinc owing to high content of pectic acid while the latter gel exhibited that for uranium and thorium. Both types of adsorption gels exhibited high affinity to ferric iron, which enables selective and strong adsorption for some toxic oxo-anions of arsenic (V and III), . selenium and so on via iron loaded on these gels. These results demonstrate that biomass wastes such as orange juice residue can be effectively utilized fer the purpose of removing toxic heavy or radioactive metals existing in trace or small amounts in environments. -
With Increasing importance of electroless nickel plating technology in many fields such as electronic and automobile industries, the treatment of the spent baths is becoming a serious problem. These spent baths contain iron and zinc as impurities, organic acids as complexing reagents, and phosphonate ions as oxidized species of tile reducing reagent. as well as several grams per liter of nickel. The spent baths are currently treated by conventional precipitation method. but a mettled with no sludge generation is desired. This work aims at establishing a recycling process of nickel from tile spent baths using solvent extraction. Extraction behaviors of nickel. iron. and zinc in various 쇼pes of real spent baths are investigated as a function of pH using LIX841, di (2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid (D2EHPA), and PC88A as tile extractants. Nickel is extracted by LIX84I at the equilibrium pH of more than 6 with high efficiency. For the weakly acid baths. iron and zinc are extracted by D2EHPA or PC88A without adjusting the pH of the baths leaving nickel in the aqueous phase. Stripping of nickel from LIX84I with sulfuric acid is also investigated. It is shown that concentrated nickel sulfate solution (> 100 ㎏-Ni/㎥) is obtained. This solution can be reused in the electroless plating process. Based on these findings, flow sheets for recovering nickel from the spent baths are proposed.

Typically, manganese (II) ions are incompletely removed from water as
$MnO_2$ on increasing the pH of the water to 10. The water then has to be neutralized before it can be used. We propose a new and effective method for removing Mn (II) from water using a new combination of symbiotic microbes consisting of manganese-oxidizing bacteria and filamentous algae. The microbes rapidly oxidize Mn(II) to Mn (IV) at a neutral pH with no organic matter required as a nutrient and$MnO_2$ is precipitated immediately. This differs from the use of heterotrophic manganese-oxidizing bacteria where organic nutrients are required. Our results suggest that this method will be useful in developing new systems for removal of manganese(II) ions from industrial and mining wastewater and drinking water. In addition, there are other possibilities such as recycling of dry batteries which are presently discarded without treatment -

Highly pure KCI and Zinc Chloride which are raw material of electro plating, can be produced by the development of the recycling process. The scope of this study ranges from laboratory experiments to pilot test in plant. We have developed the whole process of recycling technology such as purification method of waste products, fabrication methods of electro chemicals, basic design of plant, pilot scale production and evaluation of pilot goods, Developed electro chemicals were pure enough to satisfy the specification of steel company.

As part of fundamental studies on the degradation of the organic compounds in industrial waste water, the photocatalytic degradation properties of the organic compound by means of the UV/TiO
$_2$ degradation process have been investigated. The test organic compound of acetic acid was chosen in this study. The testing of photo catalytic degradation were performed under various operation conditions such as TiO$_2$ dosages, initial concentration of the organic, the aqueous pH's, etc. The effects of various parameters on the short time activity of the present acetic acid-UV/TiO$_2$ system could be demonstrated from this investigation. -
A Study on the precipitation characteristics of nickel hydroxide as well as carbonate and sulfide is carried out to determine the proper treatment condition of the wastewater induced from nickel-plating industry. The nickel concentrations in the effluent could be kept lower than 5ppm when the value of pH was maintained higher than 10. The precipitation of nickel salts by alkaline addition to the nickel containing model wastewater was conducted by using proper amount of sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate and sodium sulfide. In case of the sulfide treatment, the residual nickel concentration in the clear water after precipitates removed showed the lowest value. The influences of the precipitation condition upon the particle size of the crystals precipitated were also investigated. In spite of the various precipitation conditions were adopted, the particle size of the precipitated crystals showed no great differences. The sedimentation rates of the precipitated particle bed were observed and the free sedimentation period was terminated within 20 minutes. Although the hindered sedimentation as well as bed compaction progressed subsequently, the bed heights were maintained almost the same level after two hours of sedimentation.

In order to recycle the incineration ash (bottom ash and fly ash) generated from the incineration of municipal waste for a cement material, salts as well as heavy metal should be removed by the stabilization treatment. Most of these heavy metal and over 80% of salts are removed by a washing as a pre-treatment. However, wastewater which is another pollutant is generated by a washing, then proper treatment should be developed. First the characteristics of incineration ashes collected from two domestic full-sized incinerators were investigated and removal rate of salts and heavy metals from them also studied. The wastewater quality was compared to the criteria of the regulation by analyzing the characteristics of generated wastewater during the washing of incineration ash as a condition of liquid/solid ratio. Also, we tried to used this experimental results for the basic data to develop proper processing technique of municipal waste.

Applying life cycle assessment in PCB (printed circuit board) production, most of environmental impacts come from outside-factory-process due to power generation, especially, and other raw material productions. Relatively, small environmental impacts of inside-factory-process make it difficult to compare them. To overcome this problem allocating environmental impacts of outside-factory-process on inside-factory-process. It helps to identify the environmental impacts of each process and find sources of environmental impacts. Also, life cycle assessment shows reduction of environmental impacts after copper recycling process.

Adsorption capacities of toxic heavy metal ions using as-received carbon(AC), single and double surface-modified activated carbon(OAC and DSMC) in wide pH ranges are extensively evaluated. Physical and chemical properties of surface-modified activated carbons are evaluated through BET analysis, surface acidity and oxides measurements. Based oil tile adsorption isotherms of Pb, Cd and Cr ions by AC, OAC and DSMC, the adsorption amount on DSMC was obviously higher than that on the other carbons. Breakthrough behaviors of ternary metal ions in a column packed with three kinds of carbon were also characterized with respect to the variations of the influent pH and concentration. The adsorption capacity of DSMC in a fixed bed stood a favorable comparison with that of as-received carbon.

Mechanochemical effects that occurred in the fine grinding process of quartz particles using planetary ball mill was investigated. Quartz particles have been frequently utilized for optical materials, semiconductor molding materials. We determined that grinding for a long time can be create amorphous structures from the crystalline quartz by Mechanochemical effects. But, to be produced nano-composite particles that the critical grinding time reached for composite materials in a short time. Henceforth, a qualitative estimation must be conducted on the filler for EMC(Epoxy molding compound) materials. It can be produced mechanochemically treated composite materials and also an integrated grinding efficiency considering of the nano-composite amorphous structured particles. The mechanochemical characteristics were evaluated based on particle morphology, size distribution, specific surface area, density and the amount of amorphous phase materials into the particle surface. The grinding operation in the planetary ball mill can be classified into three stages. During the first stage, initial particle size was reduced for the increase of specific surface area. In the second stage, the specific surface areas increased in spite of the increase in particle size. The final stage as a critical grinding stage, the ground quartz was considered mechanochemically treated particles as a nano- composite amorphous structured particles. The development of amorphous phase on the particle surface was evaluated by X-ray diffractometry, thermal gravity analysis and IR spectrometer. The amount of amorphous phase of particles ground for 2048 minutes was 85.3% and 88.2% by X-ray analysis and thermal gravity analysis, respectively.

Through several years of researches, in line with GY new mineral processing technology developed by Guangzhou Research Institute of Nonferrous Metals, in sulfide flotation circuit, an iso-flotability flowsheet is used to replace original overall bulk flotation flowsheet, and in tungsten flotation circuit, a new chelating type-GY reagent and a special pulp-conditioning system and a new technology of wolframite slime flotation are used to replace the traditional "Caustic Soda Method"$_{[1]}$ , the metallurgical performance is greatly improved. Besides, GY New Method has created a favorable condition for comprehensive recovery of fluoride from tungsten flotation tailings. Notable economic benefit has been achieved.d. -
Aragonite type of precipitated calcium carbonate was synthesized by the successive reaction with hybridization of waste scallop shells with limestone. In the first step, carbonation was performed by using calcined limestone with low brightness, followed by the additional carbonation using calcined-hydrous scallop shells with high brightness. The temperature and the amount ratio of calcined limestone to calcined-hydrous scallop shells were examined as parameters in the experimental conditions. The products were characterized by XRD, SEM. in addition to measurements of brightness index. the specific surface area, and bulk density. The amount ratio of limestone to scallop shell affected not only the brightness but also morphologies of products. The increase in relative amounts of limestone leads to decrease in brightness and bumpy surface of particles. High temperature reaction produces aragonite particles with longer sizes and higher bulk densities. This study has made an attempt to establish the synthesis of aragonite with high brightness and high strength by utilization of waste scallop shells.

A new method to extract gold from pyrite roster cinder, which combines ultra-fine-grinding with resin-in-pulp, has been studied in this paper. Compared with traditional leaching technology, it can short leaching time, avoid complex filter process, lower sodium cyanide consumption and increase gold recovery by 35%. During leaching, aluminium oxide ball was used as stirred medium, hydrogen peroxide as leaching aid and sodium hexametaphosphate as grinding aid. With the high efficiency and chemistry effect of ultra-fine-grinding, the leaching process was developed and the gold leaching rate may reach 88%. With AM-2 Б resin as abosorber and sulfocarbamide (TU) as eluent, gold was recovered from cyanide pulp by resin-in-pulp. AM-2 Б resin has good adsorbability in cyanide solution(pH=10). It was easy to elude gold from the loaded resin with 0.1㏖/L cholhydric acid and 1㏖/L sulfocabamide. The effect of contact time, temperature and acidity etc. on the gold absorption had been examined with static methods. The results showed that the adsorption and desorption of gold could both reach over 98%. The effects of flow rate of solution on dynamic adsorption and elution of gold had been examined with dynamic methods. Breakthrough curve and elution curve had been drawn in this paper. A mild condition was determined through a number of experiments: leaching time 2 hours, liquid solid ratio 4:1, sodium cyanide 3kg/t, hydrogen peroxide 0.05%, sodium hexametaphosphate 0.05%; adsorption time 30 minutes, temperature 10-3

This study was conducted to obtain granular crystalline gypsum that can be used as raw material for plaster boards or cements from waste Plaster board. We could disintegrate preferentially gypsum to gypsum needle in 10
${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ or less size among the contents of waste plaster board (gypsum, paper, fiber, and inorganic material .etc.) by hydration afterwards the dehydration of crushed waste plaster board. In this case, the optimum conditions for minimizing the size of gypsum were dehydration rate of 75%~ 85%, hydration concentration of 10~20%, agitation speed of 250~400rpm, crushing size of 2cm or less. Gypsum of 98.21% grade was recovered with 99.0% yield from under screenings of 325mesh wet screening which followed by the dehydration-hydration process performed in the conditions of dehydration rate of 80%, hydration concentration of 15%, agitation speed of 300rpm, crushing size of 2cm or less. Subsequently, Plate-like Crystalline gypsum of is 151${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ size and the grade of 99.49% with the Yield of 98.0% from the upper screenings of 270mesh wet screening carried out after the re-crystallization of the recovered gypsum needle slurry. -
Shape separation method - a separation process which utilizes the fact that particles of different shape behave differently in force fields- is regarded as an useful measure for recycling, mineral processing, upgrading powdered material and so on. In this study, a trial was given to shape separation method using fluid field to recover pure diatom skeleton - which is thought to have many uses in itself and potential for various applications -from low grade diatomaceous earth of southeastern part of the Korean Peninsula. The striking difference of shape between diatom skeleton and other minerals like clay and quartz made it natural to choose shape separation method. Considering the size of particles to be separated, among many possible methods of shape separation, hydrodynamic field using hydrocyclone was adopted. The relation between the flocculation and dispersion of metal oxide powders and the properties of solvents, such as dielectric constant and solubility parameter, was investigated for TiO
$_2$ ,$Al_2$ O$_3$ and Fe$_2$ O$_3$ particles. The particle size and median diameter of these metal oxides were measured in many organic solvents, from which the effect of solvents on the flocculation and dispersion of metal oxide powders was considered. The metal oxide powders of TiO$_2$ ,$Al_2$ O$_3$ and Fe$_2$ O$_3$ tend to disperse in a solvent of higher polarity, whereas they are apt to flocculate in a solvent of low dielectric constant, because the Hamaker constant between the particles becomes larger in such a solvent. There we, however, some solvents that do not obey these tendencies. It is possible to evaluate the flocculation and dispersion of these metal oxide powders in many solvents by using numeral balances of Hansen’s three-dimensional solubility parameter (f$_{d}$ , f$_{p}$ and f$_{h}$ ). There exists a solvent giving the optimal dispersion for each metal oxide, and the optimal dispersion point of f$_{d}$ , f$_{p}$ and f$_{h}$ is determined by the combination of various metal oxide powders and solvents.nts.nts.nts. -
The possibility of producing Cr
$_2$ O$_3$ powder from waste magnesia-chromium refractory was investigated by sulfuric acid reaction, alkali fusion, water leaching & purification and heat treatment. The effects of temperature, the amount of NaOH added and the flow rate of air on chromium extraction efficiency in an alkali fusion step were investigated. The fusion product was leached with methanol to solve free-NaOH, and then leached with water to produce a Na$_2$ CrO$_4$ solution. The purity of chrome(Ⅵ) oxides, prepared both from monochromate with an impurity content and monochromate purified with$CO_2$ were also examined. The purified monochromate solution was reduced from Cr(Ⅵ) to Cr(III) with NaHSO$_3$ solution. The reduced solution was neutralized with NaOH to produce Cr(OH)$_3$ . Water washing was treated to eliminate Na$_2$ SO$_4$ from neutralized Cr(OH)$_3$ slurry. The washed Cr(OH)$_3$ was dried and thermally treated to produce Cr$_2$ O$_3$ powder. The properties like lightness and hue of Cr$_2$ O$_3$ fabricated in this study were L=47.47, a=-14.40 and b=17.21. -
EAF's dust has been treated mainly by pyrometallurgical reduction process in rotary kiln furnace to recover valuable metal elements such as Zn and to avoid the disposal of hazardous materials to waste. Recently, hydrometallurgical eletrowinning of zinc from a zinc-amino chloride solution obtained by the leaching of EAF's dust was developed to recover high grade zinc metal from EAF’s dust. But there are some disadvantages in each process such as difficulty of operation condition control and sticking problem in kiln process and low extractability and recovery of zinc owing to insoluble zinc-ferrite in electrowinning process. We propose a new combined process of pyrometallurgical one and hydrometallurgical one to treat EAF's dust efficiently and economically. In this study, ammonium chloride solution leaching of crude zinc oxide recovered from reduction of EAF's dust was carried out to find out the efficiency of zinc extraction from it and the possibility for performance of eletrowinning in the proposed process. Effects of various leaching variables ruck as leaching temperature, concentration of leaching solution and leaching time were investigated. And the leaching results of the crude zinc oxide were compared with those of EAF's dust. The extraction percents of zinc in ammonium chloride solution leaching of the crude zinc oxide recovered from reduction of EAF's dust were above 80% after 60 minutes of leaching under the leaching condition of 4M NH
$_4$ CI concentration and above leaching temperature of 7$0^{\circ}C$ . And the concentrations of zinc in the leached solution were obtained above 50g/$\ell$ . The activation energy calculated for zinc extraction in NH$_4$ CI leaching was 58.1 KJ/㏖ for EAF's dust and 15.8 KJ/㏖ for the crude zinc oxide recovered from reduction of EAF's dust. -
The degree of iron recovery from dust agglomerates was investigated experimentally to determine the optimum mixing ratio of coke in cold bonded pellet(CBP) which is fed into electric arc furnace(EAE) in the minimill plant. From the XRD analysis for EAF dust, magnetite(Fe
$_3$ O$_4$ ) and franklinite(ZnFe$_2$ O$_4$ ) was identified as major components. Maximum iron recovery was obtained for the solid carbon content of approximately 18 weight percent. From plant trials of CBP composed of this optimal mixing condition, it was observed that electric power consumption and sulfur content increased with increasing the quantity of CBP. -
MF is a half shaft blast furnace which has been developed at Mitsui Miike Smelter in the 1960’s to treat vertical retort residue. The MF has also been tested for treatment of various recycling materials and wastes. Now various secondaries and wastes (EAF dust, zinc leaching residue, Cu sludge, etc ) are mainly treated. Powder materials are briquetted with reductant before being fed to the furnace. Products are crude zinc oxide, matte, non-hazardous slag and steam. Zinc and lead are recovered in oxide dust, and copper and silver are recovered in matte. The MF can be widely applied to many kinds of materials which contain such non-ferrous metal-valuables. In addition, the improvement in operation and technology has effectively made the unit capacity much larger. The MF now has many advantages for these treatment processes.

The dust generated from the electric arc furnace steel making process is classified as hazardous material by Korean Environmental Protection Acts, mainly because of the existence of water teachable Pb, Zn and Cd. Thus the treatment of EAF dust is being carried out to fulfill both the environmental aspect and recovery of valuable metals. To establish the proper process for recovering the valuable metals (Fe, Zn, Pb and Cd) and producing the non-toxic slag from EAF dust, using RAPID-10 system, feasibility study have been carried out. To find out the scale-up factor for designing the commercial scale EAF dust treatment process(capacity 50,000 ton EAF dust per year) entitled RAPID-50 system. The design and construction of RAPID-50 (RIST Arc Plasma Industrial Device) system for treating 50,000 ton of EAF dust per year is now undergoing. Overall plan for treating EAF dust generated in KOREA will be setup after successful operation (December, 2002) of RAPID-50 system.

Kobe Steel, LTD. and Midrex Technologies Inc. jointly developed the FASTMET
$\circledR$ process as a steel mill waste recycle technology in which the DRI product meets BF feed material or BOF/EAF feed material requirements. FASTMET(R) process turns value-less wastes into valuable DRI and sellable zinc oxide, and gives the solution for the steel mill wastes recycling from both economical and environmental viewpoints. During the development of the process, Laboratory, Pilot Plant and Demonstration Plant tests were carried out from 1990 to 1998. The first FASTMET(R) commercial plant began operation in April, 2000 and the second commercial plant started in April, 2001 Both commercial plants have proceeded successfully preying that FASTMET$\circledR$ is a suitable process for recycling steel mill waste and for producing DRI as an iron source. -
The innovatory process, that is the direct separation and recovery of the iron and zinc metals contained in the high temperature exhaust gas generated from the electric arc furnace fer the inn scrap melting and/or the dust treatment, has been proposed. This proposed process consists of the moving coke bed filter that is directly connected to the electric furnace, and the following heavy metal condenser. The exhaust gas passes through the filter and the condenser right after exhausting from the electric furnace. The moving coke bed filter is being controlled at about 1000℃ and collects iron and slag components contained in the high temperature exhaust gas. Heavy metals such as zinc and lead pass through the filter as vapor. Based on the thermodynamic considerations, the iron oxide and the zinc oxide are reduced in the filter. The solution loss reaction rate is comparatively low at about 1000℃ in the coke bed filter by the analysis using the mathematical simulation model. The heavy metal condenser is installed in the position after the coke bed filter, and rapidly cools the gas from about 1000℃ to 450℃ by a full of the cooling medium like the solid ceramic ball in addition to the cooling from the wall. The zinc and lead vapor condense and separate f개m the gas in a liquid state. The investigation of the characteristics of the exhaust gas of the commercial electric arc furnace, the fundamental experiments of the laboratory scale and the bench scale ensured the formation of this proposed process. A small-scale pilot plant examination is carrying out at present to confirm the formation of the process. It is certain that the dust generation of the electric arc furnace is extremely decreased, and it can save the energy consumption of usual dust treatment processes by the realization of this process.

There is a potential usability of electric arc furnace(EAF) dust produced during the iron manufacturing process as a recycled resource, because valuable materials such as Zn, Pb and Fe are contained in it. In this study, metallic Zn was recycled from the fine electric arc furnace dust by a solid state reduction method using carbon at relatively low temperature. It was possible to recover metallic zinc by using of high vapour pressure of zinc with this reduction method. The feasibility of recycled zinc for cold bonded pellet(CBP) was investigated. The main composition of EAF dust were franklinite(ZnFe$_2$ O$_4$ ), magnetite(Fe$_3$ O$_4$ ) and zincite(ZnO), and Pb and Cl were completely removed by a heat treatment in oxidation environment. The reduction ratio increased as the solid carbon content increased, and it increased with decreasing of dust particle size and increasing of compaction pressure due to a increase of contact area. -
This paper focuses on the pilot-scale investigation of direct recycling of electric arc furnace (EAF) stainless steelmaking dust. The direct recycling of EAF dust is to make pellets with the mixture of the dust and the reducing agent carbon, then introduce the pellets to the EAF. The valuable metals in the dust are reduced and get into the steel as the alloying elements. Experiments simulating direct recycling in an EAF were performed using an induction furnace. But it seems difficult to reduce all metal oxides in the dust so that some metal reducing agents added in the late stage of reduction process. The valuable metals in the dust were reduced partly by carbon and partly by metal reducing agent for the economical concern. The recovery of iron, chromium and nickel from the flue dust and the amount of metal oxides in the slag were measured. The results showed that the direct recycling of EAF stainless steelmaking dust is practicable. It wes also found that direct recycling of flue EAF stainless steelmaking dusts does not affect the chemistry and quality of stainless steel produced in the EAF. It is benefit not only for the environmental protection but also for the recovery of valuable metal resources in this way.

The high purity manganese oxides were made from the dust, generated in AOD process that produces a medium-low carbon ferromanganese and collected in the bag filter. Manganese oxide content in the dust was about 90%, and its phase was confirmed as Mn₃O₄. In the extraction of manganese, because of remaining amorphous MnO₂, the dust was reduced to MnO by roasting with charcoal. The pulp density of the reduced dust can control pH of the solution more than 4 and then Fe ion is precipitated to a ferric hydroxide. Because a ferric hydroxide co precipitates with Si ion etc, Fe, Si ion was removed f개m the solution. Heating made water to be volatized and nitrates was left in reactor Then nitrates were a liquid state and stirring was possible. Among the nitrates in reactor, only the manganese nitrate which have the lowest pyrolysis temperature pyrolyzed into β-MnO₂powder and NO₂(g) at the temperature less than 200℃. When the pyrolysis of manganese nitrate has been completed about 90%, injection of water stopped the pyrolysis. Nitrates of impurity dissolved and the spherical high purity β-MnO₂powders were obtained by filtering and washing. Mn₂O₃or Mn₃O₄ powder could be manufactured from β-MnO₂powder by controlling the heating temperature. Lastly, a manufactured manganese oxide particle has 99.97% purity.

Water usage in the semiconductor industries is dramatically increased by not only using bigger wafer from 8 inches to 12 inches but also by adapting new process such as Chemical Mechanical Planarization (CMP) process invented by IBM in late '80. However, The document published by International Semiconductor Association suggests the decreasing ultra pure water (UPW) use from 22 gallon/in
$^2$ in 1997 to 5 gallon/in$^2$ in 2012. The criteria will possibly used as exporting obstacle in the future. Generally, Solid content of CMP slurry is about 15wt%. The slurry is diluted with UPW before fed to a CMP process. When the slurry is discharged from the process as waste, it contains 0.1~0.6wt% of solid content and 9~10 at pH. The CMP waste slurry is discharged to stream with minimum treatment. In this study, to find optimum condition of coagulation for water recovery from the waste CMP slurry various condition of coagulation were examined. After coagulation far 0.1 wt% solid content of waste CMP slurry, the sludge volume was 10~15% after 30 min of sedimentation time. For the 0.5 wt%, sludge volume was 50~55% after one hour of sedimentation time. For more than 80% of water recycling, the solid content should be in the range of 0.1 to 0.2wr%. Based on the result of the turbidity removal, the Zeta Potential and the analysis of heavy metals, the optimum condition for 0.1 wr% of waste CMP slurry was with 20 mg/L of PACI at 4 to 5 of pH. The result showed that the optimum conditions fer the 0.1 wt% waste CMP slurry were 100mg/L of Alum at 4~5 of pH, 100 mg/L of MgCI$_2$ at pH 10 to 11 and 100 mg/L of Ca(OH)$_2$ at pH 9 to 11, respectively. -

The pneumatic classification and acidic leaching behaviors of phosphor sludge have been examined to establish the recycling system of rare earth components contained in waste fluorescent lamp. At first, separation characteristic of rare earth components and calcium phosphate in phosphor sludge was investigated by pneumatic classification. After pneumatic classification of phosphor sludge, rare earth components were leached in various acidic solutions and sodium hydroxide solution. For recovery of soluble component in leaching solution, rare earth components were separated as hydroxide and oxalate precipitations. The experimental results obtained are summarized as follows: (1) In classification process, rare earth components in phosphor sludge were concentrated to 29.3% from 13.3%, and its yield was 32.9%. (2) In leaching process, sulfuric acid solution was more effective one as a leaching solvent of rare earth component than other solutions. Y and Eu components in phosphor sludge were dissolved in sulfuric acid solution of 1.5 k㏖/㎥, and other rare earth components were rarely dissolved in leaching solution. Leaching degrees of Y and Eu were respectively 92% and 98% in the following optimum leaching conditions; sulfuric acid concentration is 1.5 k㏖/㎥ , leaching temperature 343 K, leaching time 3.6 ks and pulp concentration 30 kg/㎥. (3) Y and Eu components of phosphor sludge contained in waste fluorescent lamp were, effectively recovered by three processes of pneumatic classification, sulfuric acid leaching and oxalate precipitation methods. Their recovery was finally about 65 %, and its purity was 98.2%. -

In this research, porous materials were made from mine's waste slime. As a temperature changes, a phase changes, a porosity, and a mechanical strength of porous materials were observed and measured. The process of pore-formation was observed by SEM according to the change of heat-treatment temperature and time. It fumed out that the foaming reaction of mine's waste slime was resulted from liquid phase by decomposition of the sanidine and the muscovite-3T. When heat- treated at over 120$0^{\circ}C$ , it appeared high porosity. And, to activate the foaming reaction, an alkaline oxide concerned with liquid formation was added and its effects were examined. -
In this study, calcium sulfate(gypsum) powder was obtained using waste sulfuric acid and stainless refinery sludge by- produced from chemical reagent and the iron industry, by the neutralization of waste sulfuric acid. As variables for the experiment the mole ratio of the H
$_2$ SO$_4$ : Ca(OH)$_2$ , the pH, the reaction temperature and time, the amount of catalyst were used. The crystal shape and microstructure of obtained powder were observed by XRD and SEM, and the thermal property was investigated by DTA. As the NaCl is added 0~20wt% as a catalyst to the H$_2$ SO$_4$ : Ca(OH)$_2$ , system it can be found that the crystal shape goes through the processes as follows : gypsum dihydratlongrightarrowgypsum hemihydrate+gypsum dihydratelongrightarrowgypsum hemihydrate. And gypsum hemihydrate is$\beta$ -type as the result of DTA. As waste sulfuric acid and stainless refinery sludge were used, the pH of reacted solution (which was 0.8) was rapidly raised up to 8~9 by the addition of stainless sludge and gypsum dihydrate was produced as a by-product. Therefore, it was found that stainless refinery sludge is sufficiently applicable for the neutralization of waste sulfuric acid. -
In an integrated steel mill, zinc (Zn) inputs from raw materials and steel scrap are enriched in the dusts and sludges collected from gas and water cleaning systems. The reuse of these dusts and sludges must be controlled within certain limit to avoid Zn accumulation and related operational problems in blast furnace. An integrated system has been established at China Steel Corporation (CSC) to enhance the internal reuse of Zn-containing dust/sludge while keeping Zn input within control lim it. However. the performance of this system has not been very satisfactory until one and half years ago when a rationalization process was initiated. The essence of this rationalization process, the recent improvements in Zn control and dust and sludge reuse are reported and discussed.

A laboratory-scale electrodewatering system for enhancing conventional filter pressure dewatering by an electric field has been developed to decrease the water content of sludge generated in the wastewater treatment. It consists of a piston-typed filter press, a power supply and data acquisition system. The offset of electrodewatering is investigated as a function of applied pressure, applied voltage, sludge type and filtration time. Also the optimal conditions for maximizing the dewatering efficiency in the eletrodewatering system are investigated. Electric field strength and mechanical pressure are in the range of from 0 to 120 V/cm and from 98.1 to 392.4 kPa. The dewatering rates increased with increasing electric strength. These experiments produced a final sludge cake with water content of 60 wt% using electrodewatering technology, compared with a 80 wt% using pressure filtration alone. The conventional filtration system using the electrodewatering shows the potential to be effective method for improving dewatering Sludge. -
An Experimental study was carried out to develop a simple method of processing copper waste sludge which is produced by PBC manufacturing. The procedure is based on leaching of wet sludge in 2N H
$_2$ SO$_4$ , and the solid / liquid ratio is controlled approximately at 1/10. The recovery of copper is 85.4%, and pH of the leachate is 3.20. Adding ammonia solution into leachate forms ammine, and hydroxide compounds derived from other impurities in leachate at pH 10. The hydroxide compound can be treated by ferrite process, and the product is a stable oxide compound. Then the ammine solution is heated to evaporate ammonia, and the copper hydroxide is formed. Heating at 8$0^{\circ}C$ by aeration, copper hydroxide is transformed into copper oxide with a purity of 98.4%. This process can recover most copper from sludge and the residue can be stabilized by the formation of a stable oxide compound which is not hazardous to environment. -
This study was performed to reuse the dyeing wastewater sludge treated by Fenton process through the solidification/stabilization technique. To solidify the dyeing sludge the industrial by-products such as blast furnace slag, fly ash and waste sand with cement were used. The laboratory scale and pilot scale test were conducted at room temperature to make construction brick which has high compressive strength and low leaching of heavy metals. The experimental results showed that blast furnace slag and fly ash could be used instead of cement and the products satisfied the regulation of Korean Standards. The blast furnace slag increased the compressive strength and the optimum ratio of slag/dyeing sludge on dry basis was found 0.4. The solidifying agent of SB series could increase rapidly the compressive strength and the optimum ratio of solidifying agent/sludge on dry basis was 0.26 at which the strength was two times compared with non-added condition. The portion of waste and industrial by-products in matrix was over 80%. From the pilot test the optimum pressure in molding was 100kg/
$\textrm{cm}^2$ at which the compressive strength was over 100kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ . And the strength increased continuously to 160kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ until 120 days curing time due to pozzolanic reaction. When SB-20 as a solidifying agent was used, the unconfined compressive strength of dyeing sludge could be obtained 110kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ which satisfied the regulation of cement brick in Korea Standard(KS). -
The work was initiated to investigate the electrokinetic properties of a MF membrane using streaming potential measurement when oil emulsion was separated. The original and the surface modified PP membrane were examined by using flux and streaming potentials for the characterization of fouling phenomena of the PP membrane. The membrane surface was modified by a radiation grafting technique. The streaming potentials of the PP membranes were varied the charge distribution modifying by changing the pH, ionic strength, and concentrations the surfactants in oil emulsion. The shiftness to the more positive values of isoelectric point of the PP membrane was significant especially in the presence of surfactants or the surface modification.

Dry grinding of a mixture of CaCO
$_3$ and Ca(H$_2$ PO$_4$ )$_2$ .$H_2O$ was conducted using a planetary ball mill in order to investigate solid state reaction for a synthesis of hydroxyapatite(Ca$_{10}$ (PO$_4$ )$_{6}$ (OH)$_2$ , HAp) through mechanochemical treatment method. The raw materials, which are composed of waste oyster and calcium biphosphate Ca(H$_2$ PO$_4$ )$_2$ .$H_2O$ , were mixed and then treated mechanochemically. The synthesis of hydroxyapatite(Ca$_{10}$ (PO$_4$ )$_{6}$ (OH)$_2$ , HAp) from the mixture was almost completed by about 60 minute grinding. The formation of HAp monophase in the ground mixture was characterized through X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. Moreover, the formation of HAp monophase depending on the grinding time was improved by increasing the grinding time.ime.ime. -
Spent catalysts containing platinum were generated in petroleum refinery and other chemical industries. The reclamation of precious metals from such wastes has long been attempted in view of their rare, expensive and indispensable nature. In this study, the recovery of platinum from petroleum catalysts was attempted by a method consisting mainly of dissolving alumina substrate with sulfuric acid thereby concentrating insoluble platinum. Also, platinum dissolved partially in sulfuric acid was recovered by a cementation method using aluminum metal as a reductive agent. The effect of temperature, time, concentration of sulfuric acid. and pulp density on the dissolution of substrate was investigated. When the substrate of platinum catalyst was
${\gamma}$ -AI$_2$ O$_3$ about 95% alumina was dissolved in 6.0M sulfuric acid at 10$0^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours. When the substrate was the mixture of${\gamma}$ -A1$_2$ O$_3$ and$\alpha$ -A1$_2$ O$_3$ about 92% was dissolved after 4 hours. As a result, more than 99% of platinum could be recovered by this method and aluminum sulfate was obtained as byproduct. -
The spent petrochemical catalyst used in the manufacturing process of terephthalic-acid contains valuable metals such as cobalt and manganese. To recover these metals, sulfuric acid leaching was performed with hydrogen peroxide as a reducing agent. Low extractions of Mn, Co and Fe were obtained by sulfuric acid leaching without reducing agent. With adding hydrogen peroxide as a reducing agent, the high extraction of these metals could be obtained. Different from general leaching experiment, the extraction rates of metal components were decreased with increasing reaction temperature in this case. Under the optimum condition, the extraction rates of Mn, Co and Fe were 93.0%, 87.0% and 100% respectively.

Platinum group metals (pgm) are useful to many industries such as chemical, dental and medical, petroleum, refining, electrical and electronic, and automotive. Researchers at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology and PGM Recovery Ltd. have developed jointly an environmentally sound and metallurgically efficient process for extracting these metals from secondary sources. Once these metals have been dissolved in the leach liquor, the individual metals mainly platinum, palladium, and rhodium, should be separated in order to recover the individual metals with high purity. During this investigation, solvent extraction has been chosen as the method used to achieve the separation and extraction of platinum, palladium, and rhodium from the leach liquor. There were three solutions used throughout this procedure: 1) Synthetic solution (200 ppm Pt 80 ppm Pd 20 ppm Rh; 300 ppm Pt, 180 ppm Pd 50 ppm Rh), and 2) Auto catalyst leach liquors (100 ppm Pt, 30 ppm Pd, 20 ppm Rh). The solvents investigated included Lix 84(2-hydroxy-5-nonylacetonphenone oxime in a mixture with 5-dodecylsalicyloxime), Lix 84-I, ACORGA CLX-50 (diester of pyridine 3,5 dicarboxylic acid), and di-hexyl sulfide. The extraction values achieved using ACORGA CLX-50, Lix 84, and Lix 84-I were respectively Pt (25%, 0% 0%), Pd (100%, 99.8%, 95.3%), and Rh (99.1%, 35.5%, 4.25%). The stripping processes for the Lix 84, and Lix 84-I were proven to be more involved than others. The solutions were required to be simultaneously heated and stirred. The percentages acquired through these processes yielded unsatisfactory results. The stripping procedure for the ACORGA CLX-50 was easier to execute, yet the percentage recovered from this process was also unsatisfactory. Overall the di-hexyl sulfide has proved to be the most successful organic for this procedure. The average percent extracted for palladium was excellent with 99.9% - 100% with very little Platinum and rhodium extracted. The ability of stripping palladium in ammonia solution was also found to be excellent.

Big cities in Japan have serious problems due to the shortage of new reclaimed land for municipal wastes. If harmful heavy metals such as cadmium, lead, copper and etc. are contained in the municipal waste combustion residues, they are not able to fill up according to the environmental law in Japan. In this study, the removal of heavy metals in the fly ash (EP ash) was dealt with chloridizing vaporization method. EP ash as a non-hazardous materials is utilized as covering materials, road bed, and building materials.

The present work investigates the possible use of fly ash for the removal of heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions. Batch experiments were conducted and the influences of metal concentration, pH, and fly ash concentration were investigated. Heavy metals used in these studies were zinc, lead and cadmium. Adsorption studies were done over a range of pH values (3-10) at
$25^{\circ}C$ and heavy metal concentrations of 10-400 mg/L using fly ash concentrations of 10, 20 and 40 g/L. Experiments were also conducted without fly ash to determine the extent of heavy metal removal by precipitation. Kinetic and equilibrium experiments were performed and adsorption data were correlated with both Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption models. The results indicate that fly ash can be used as an adsorbent for heavy metals in the aqueous solutions, yet the degree of removal depends on the pH. -
In this paper the forming and the unique properties of PZH blast furnace slag, bearing TiO
$_2$ 22~25%, have been introduced. The utilization of this kind of blast furnace slag, especially about recycling resource of TiO$_2$ included in it, has been reviewed and discussed. According to research work experiences and tendency of new materials developing some suggestions about future research on PZH blast furnace slag have been put forward. -
Recently, ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBFS) has been increasingly used as additive for concrete. Many researchers reported that concrete using GGBFS had a better resistance under severe environments, such as marine or sulfate-rich soils, than Portland type cement concrete. The aim, therefore, of this study is to evaluate on the effectiveness of concrete using GGBFS when the concrete exposes to sulfate-rich environment. The detailed items for experiments show 2 series consisted of sulfate immersion test with mortar and sulfate diffusion test with concrete. The sulfate immersion test was performed for 400 days and contained reduction of compressive strength, length change and XRD analysis. For sulfate diffusion test, sulfate ions diffusivity was calculated on tile consideration of electrochemical theory by the diffusion cell test. As the results of this study, it was found that the concrete using GGBFS as additive was superior to portland type cement concrete. Consequently, the use of concrete with GGBFS for recycling may expect the durable and economical benefits.

Converter has been slag produced 10 million tons per year in Japan. It is a steel making by product produced in the same way as the blast-furnace slag. Though blast-furnace slag is being used effectively as a concrete admixture, the converter stag has never been used effectively because of the expansion action of contained free lime and iron oxide. This is an important environmental problem in the steel industry. Beta-2CaOSiO
$_2$ (beta-C$_2$ S) is contained 40 percent in converter slag, therefore it is very promising as a concrete admixture. We proposed an accelerated aging processes capable of stabilizing the converter slag in a short time. The converter slag is dipped into alkali aqueous solution after heating at low temperature. It was subsequently ground to a grain size of 75${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ , inner 30 percent of OPC. The properties of mortar and concrete using the blended cement were determined. As a result, it has become apparent that the expansion was reduced and long term compressive strength was increased while that at early ages was not so remarkable. The hydration exotherm rate was lower than that of the OPC. -
Compared with the blast furnace slag, steel slag has the expansibility due to the reaction with water and free CaO. Therefore it is specified in Standard Specification for Concrete in Korea that steel slag aggregate must not be used in concrete. So it is unusual to use steel slag aggregate in concrete. In this study steel slag aggregate processed by several aging process was comparatively satisfied with fundamental properties as concrete aggregate, which are specific gravity, absorption, unit weight, percentage of solids and abrasion value etc. And chemical analysis is observed to understand the effect of aging process in steel slag aggregate. When the strength is measured, it is found that the concrete replacing crushed stone with steel slag aggregate had a little problem without sufficient aging process

LD slag, that is, a by-product of steel making process, has been mainly used as land construction materials. Recently, the seashore application of LD slag was tried in Japan and Korea tut the reaction between LD slag and seawater was not studied yet. We tried to clarify the leaching reaction and/or mechanism of LD slag and the reaction between seawater and LD slag. We tried to apply these results to the decarbonization of seawater for seawater magnesia process. At first, LD slag was milled and classified into 5 grades, that is, (ⅰ)45
${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ under, (ⅱ)0.25~0.5mm (ⅲ)0.5~1mm(ⅳ)1~2mm, (ⅴ)2.36~3.35mm. These slags were leached in the distilled water. In case of 45${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ under, the pH of the leached solution was over 12. The chemical analysis of leached solution showed that the$Ca^{+}$ $^2$ was main component and the S$i^{+}$ $^4$ was very low. On the other hand, the content of S$i^{+}$ $^4$ in leached solution was decreased with the increase of pH of this solution. The nearly pure calcium solution was made and the ultra high purity MgO could be made with this calcium solution. The leaching behavior of LD slag was different between the fine particle and coarse particle. The calcium was leached by bulk dissolution in the coarse particle and by surface controlled reaction in fine particle. The leaching rate was slow in coarse particle and fast in fine particle. Therefore, the high pH solution, that is, over 12, was obtained in fine particle.cle.e. -
LD slag, that is, a by-product of steel making process, has been mainly used as land construction materials. Recently, the seashore application of LD slag was tried in Japan and Korea but the reaction between LD slag and seawater was not studied yet. We tried to clarify the leaching reaction and/or mechanism of LD slag and the reaction between seawater and LD slag. We tried to apply these results to the decarbonization of seawater for seawater magnesia process. The high pH solution(over 12) was injected into the sea water and the pH of mixed liquid was adjusted to 9.8. This mixed solution was aged for 8 hours and the 104ppm of CO
$_3$ $^{-2}$ in the sea water was decreased to 23ppm with the negligible loss of$Mg^2$ $^{+}$ . The slag particle was directly inserted into the seawater fur practical application. The 0.5~1mm particles were suitable for decarbonization when 5 grade slags mentioned above were reacted with sea water. In this case, the content of CO$_3$ $^{-2}$ in the sea water was 53 ppm with the negligible loss of$Mg^2$ $^{+}$ after 8 hours aging. The direct application of slag particle fur the decarbonization of seawater takes more reaction time.ime. -
For the development of reformation material of soft ground using the LD slag, the relation to the particle condition of LD slag and the pH behavior of slag dissolution water, extraction properties of slag, and origination of white water were investigated. When the LD slag is mixed with sea water, the pH of solution ranged between 9.47 and 10.0. On the other hand, when mixed with distilled water, the pH was about 10.4 to 12.1. For the as-received slag and the aged slag in sea water, a pH of 11.5 to 12.0 was observed when the particle size was less than 0.5mm. For the reoxidized slag in seawater, the pH of the solution was lower than 9.5 when the particle size was bigger than 0.075mm. For the aged slag and reoxidized slag, the pH of the solution remained constant when the addition ratio of sea water to the slag was higher than 500 times. The main elements dissolved from the slag were Ca and Mg ions. When the pH went over 9.0, the white water started to font which was caused by the CaCO
$_3$ and Mg(OH)$_2$ . -
Converter slag has some compositional similarities to portland cement. But it has no hydration properties due to it's quite high concentrations of FeO(20-35%), MnO(4-6.5%). So it is needed to reduce the concentrations of iron and manganese of converter slag to use as cement additives by enhancing it's hydration properties. In this study, converter slag was modified it's composition by mixing of silica, alumina and quenched BF slag and reduced in induction furnace and quenched in running water. The hydraulic properties and structures of modified and quenched converter slag are significantly changed depend on the amount and kinds of additives. The addition of alumina up to 10% and BFQ slag up to 20% by weight on converter slag was effective to enhance the hydraulic properties of modified and quenched slag. The addition of reduced and quenched converter slag up to 20% by weight in replacement of portland cement in mixing of concrete mortar were shown higher compressive strength than 100% cement concrete mortar.

The authors have proposed that waste glass, which is crushed to pieces, can be used as a concrete aggregate. At the present time, recycled-glass concrete is used for sidewalk concrete blocks and pavement as glass is ornamental. However, in cases where recycled-glass concrete is used for structural concrete, strength and durability are required as structural concrete is exposed to the weather. Glass that is used generally is a mixture of SiO
$_2$ , Na$_2$ O and CaO. SiO$_2$ is the most likely cause of alkali-aggregate reaction when waste glass was used for concrete aggregate. In this study, an alkali-aggregate reaction test that is one of the important tests related to durability of aggregate was carried out far discussion of utilization of waste glass for concrete aggregate. From the results of the tests, it is found that glass is a reactive aggregate. The pessimum proportion of glass is about 75%. Then the cases of using fly ash, blast furnace slag and artificial zeolite for admixture materials were also examined for the purpose of prevention of alkali-aggregate reaction. from the results of the test, it was found that using them is an effective way to prevent alkali-aggregate reaction. The compressive strength in the cases of using admixture materials is larger than that without admixture materials. -
A by-product, waste sludge water produced from ready mixed concrete(remicon) factories may affect our environmental contamination if it is discharged without proper waste disposal. In Korea, all waste sludge water has been recycled in the way of mixing water of remicon, but the quality of the concrete then produced can be deteriorated, so it might cause slump loss or irregular compressive strength. In this study, waste sludge water is divided into two parts, remicon sludge and residual water in order to make it's property more stable. Then, the remicon sludge and high-alkaline residual water were used as admixture and alkali activator respectively. In this paper we research about quality of with remicon sludge and residual water and performed the fundamental properties of cement matrix mixed with remicon sludge and residual water.

Nowadays, according to the trend of a high performance of concrete structure, the research results have been announced for the purpose to make the high quality. With this respect, we began research to use the Ground Calcium slurry Carbonate (GCC) to a concrete admixtures which ground the limestone until about
$1.5mutextrm{m}$ . In this paper, we examined the quality of GCC to fine out the value in use as the concrete admixtures. And mechanical properties of concrete using cement blended with GCC, silica fume and mixed two were investigated. It was result from this study that air contents of concrete replaced with GCC were constant regardless of replacement ratio, but the more GCC it had the use of, the less slump was measured. Especially 10% GCC concrete had a good result of compressive strength. In case of mixture with GCC and silica fume, the workability and compressive strength don't seem to be any problems. In the scope of this study it was indicated that the most reasonable replacement with GCC was 10% of cement weight as concrete admixture. -
Annually, Taiwan generates approximately 2 million tons of inorganic wastes in the form of sludge, fly ash and slug. To increase the added value of waste and maintain the increasingly insufficient supply of natural gravel, large public construction projects account for this large demand each year. future architectural trends are leading towards high-rise buildings. In light of the above, Center for Environmental, Safety and Health Technology Development, Industrial Technology Research Institute has developed the technology of manufacturing cold-bonding, sintering and bloating types of lightweight aggregates with a specific gravity ranging between 0.7~1.7, water absorption rate < 30%. The lightweight aggregate verified by physical property tests can be used as a substitute for the natural aggregate, which generally appears in replacing gravel in concrete, soundproofing and heat insulation materials. Doing so would not only moderate waste disposal problems, but also achieve the goal of resource recovery.

To examine the grinding effect through preheating of waste concrete as a way of retrieving coarse aggregates from waste concrete, the removal rates of cement mortar and paste of both recycled aggregates and heated and grinded ones were investigated. As the preheating temperature increased, the removal rate of cement mortar from waste concrete was raised, and this kind of removal hardly affected the abrasion rate and specific gravity of aggregates. On the other hand, when it was treated over 40
$0^{\circ}C$ of preheating temperature, the absorptance was reduced to less than 2.17, and cement mortar was effectively separated from waste concrete. It could meet the Korean Standards on recycled aggregates for concrete, and it is expected to expand the scope of utilization by making it possible to retrieve the aggregates which have the properties close to natural aggregates. -
The amount of the waste foundry sand(WFS) produced in Korea is over 700,000 ton per year, but most WFS buries itself and only 5~6% or total WFS is recycled in the way or mixing as fine aggregate for construction materials. A bY-product, WFS produced from a foundry may affect our environmental contamination if it is discharged without proper waste disposal in Korea. Therefore in this study, we performed the fundamental research about specific gravity, absorption, grading curve, finesse modulus of WFS, different aggregates and the flow and the compressive strength of mortar with WFS replaced as fine aggregate, the workability and compressive strength of concrete with WFS as fine aggregate aimed at the specified strength of 270 kgf/
$\textrm{cm}^2$ , and then optimum mix proportion of concrete was determined -
Alinite-Calciumchloroaluminate system clinker was synthesized from solid state waste. The raw materials were municipal incineration ash, sewage sludge, limestone and clay. ecocement was prepared by the mixing of synthesized clinker and optimum amount of gypsum and its hydrolysis characteristic was investigated. X-ray diffraction, conduction calorimeter and reflecting microscope were used to analyze structural and physical properties. The main phase of clinker were alinite, calcium chloroaluminate.
$C_2$ S,$C_3$ S. From the results of hardening time, hydration reactivity of synthesized all samples was faster than that of ordinary portland cement. -
This research investigated the feasibility of the accelerated carbonation of cement waste forms with carbon dioxide in a supercritical state. Hydraulic cement has been used as a main solidification matrix for the immobilization of radioactive and/or hazardous wastes. As a result of the hydration reaction for major compounds of portland cement, portlandite (Ca(OH)
$_2$ ) is present in the hydrated cement waste form. The chemical durability of a cement form is expected to increase by converting portlandite to the less soluble calcite (CaCO$_3$ ). For a faster reaction of portlandite with carbon dioxide, SCCD (supercritical carbon dioxide) rather than gaseous$CO_2$ , in ambient pressure is used. The cement forms fabricated with an addition of slated lime or Na-bentonite were cured under ambient conditions for 28days and then treated with SCCD in an autoclave maintained at 34$^{\circ}C$ and 80atm. After SCCD treatment, the physicochemical properties of cement matrices were analyzed to evaluate the effectiveness of accelerated carbonation reaction. Conversion of parts of portlandite to calcite by the carbonation reaction with SCCD was verified by XRD (X-ray diffraction) analysis and the composition of portlandite and calcite was estimated using thermogravimetric (TG) data. After SCCD treatment, tile cement density slightly increased by about 1.5% regardless of the SCCD treatment time. The leaching behavior of cement, tested in accordance with an ISO leach test method at 7$0^{\circ}C$ for over 300 days, showed a proportional relationship to the square root of the leaching time, so the major leaching mechanism of cement matrix was diffusion controlled. The cumulative fraction leached (CFL) of calcium decreased by more than 50% after SCCD treatment. It might be concluded that the enhancement of the characteristics of a cement matrix by an accelerated carbonation reaction with SCCD is possible to some extent. -

A TACUB jig was applied to separate waste plastics [polystyrene (PS), acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET)] used in copy machine. The effect of water pulsation including amplitude and frequency on the separation performance was investigated for the feeds containing two or three plastics. Good results are obtained under suitable conditions. Grades of 99.8% PS,99.3% ABS, and 98.6% PET are recovered as the products in the upper, middle and bottom layers respectively. Based on these results, a processing plant fer recycling of plastics from scrapped copy machines is now under construction. -
Waste plastics amount is more than 3.5 million tons and 30% of industrial waste in 1998, Korea but recycling rate of industrial waste plastics is quite low because the material separation technology from the mixed waste plastic powders is not commercially available so far. This study covers the triboelectrostatic separation of polyvinylchloride (PVC) materials collection chambers and controllers. PVC and PET powders can be imparted negative and positive surface charges, respectively, due to the difference of triboelectric charging series between particles and particles in the fluidized bed tribocharger, and can be separated by passing them through an external electric field. The extract content and yield of PVC separation from the mixed PVC and PET plastic powders are 90.0% and 98.2%, respectively. The electrostatic separation system using the fluidized bed tribocharger shows the potential to be an effective method for removing PVC materials from other mixed plastics.

Low density ceramic supporter was prepared by using fly ash as a starting material for the application to the biological aerated filter (BAF) system, and the effect of additives and sintering atmosphere on the apparent and bulk density of the carrier was examined. Borax, Na
$_2$ O and glass powders were added to produce liquid phase. The density of the supporter decreased as the amount of borax increased. The bulk density of 0.79 g/㎤ and the apparent density of 1.10 g/㎤ were obtained when the fly ash with 15% of borax was sintered at 116$0^{\circ}C$ for 15 minutes. The density also decreased as the plate glass powders past through 22${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ size were mixed. When the fly ash with 12% of grass powder was sintered at 128$0^{\circ}C$ for 10 minutes, the bulk and apparent density were 0.90g/㎤ and 1.00 g/㎤, respectively. Apparent density of 1.6~1.8g/㎤ was obtained when the fly ash was sintered at 120$0^{\circ}C$ in a weak reducing atmosphere. By maintaining the reducing atmosphere and sintering at a high heating rate, the liquid phase was farmed from the reduced composition of fly ash. This resulted in the formation of closed pores that enabled the low apparent density. -
Over 800 thousand tons per year (TPY) agricultural biowastes, such as sugar cane bagasse, sugarcane leaf, rice straw, rice husk and corn leaf, are produced in Taiwan. These biomasses are the major types of agricultural wastes and are abundantly available. However, these biowastes cause disposal and landfill problems. Ossification ashes of the agricultural biowastes containing 70-95 % amorphous silica would make the utilization system of agricultural biowaste ashes become highly economically and environmentally attractive. Experimentally, high crystallinity (99%
$^{+}$ ) zeolites ZSM-5 and ZSM-48 synthesized from the reaction mixtures containing a silica source from ashes of these biowastes gasification were investigated. Tetrapropylammonium bromide (TPABr) and 1,6-diamino-hexane (C$_{6}$ DN) were used as structure-directing agents in syntheses of ZSM-5 and ZSM-48, respectively. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM/EDX) data indicated that ZSM-5 or ZSM-48 with a high crystallinity can be obtained within 48 hours of crystallization in the high pressure (15-20 atm) autoclave at 393-473 K. The Si/Al ratios of synthetic zeolite products were determined by X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and induced couple plasma/mass spectroscopy (ICP/MS). It was observed that the ZSM-5 crystals a.e composed of hexagonal rod-shaped crystals with typically 8-13 пm in size by SEM. In addition, ZSM-48 crystalline materials are composed of spherical aggregates of needle-shaped or rod-like crystals with typically 2-3 пm in diameter and 6-8 пm in length.h. -

The objectives of this study are to investigate the suitability of various coal fly ashes and incineration ashes for zeolite synthesis. Zeolite P and hydroxysodalite are produced from coal fly ash and paper sludge incineration ash. When soluble and acid-soluble materials in incineration fly ash are removed by the water washing or acid washing before hydrothermal synthesis, hydroxysodalite can be produced. The factors to make solid-liquid separation difficult are the calcium component and the unburned carbon in ash. -
Recycling of coal combustion by-product(Ash) are becoming more important in the utilization business as a result of the increased use of NOx reduction technologies at coal-fired power plants. current disposal methods of these by-products create not only a loss of profit for the power industry, but also environmental concerns that breed negative public opinion. Since inherent characteristics make these by-product suitable for building materials, several types of artificial aggregates and construction bricks are manufactured and tested to verify the engineering properties.

The removal rate of Cl from municipal solid waste incineration(MSWI) ash(bottom ash and fly ash) by washing was investigated. The Cl contents in the bottom ash and fly ash were 2.6-3.0% and 25-30% respectively, and KCl, NaCl, CaCIOH and friedel's salt were main components. From the results on the effects of washing time and temperature, the Cl contents in the bottom ash and fly ash were decreased up to 0.3% and 2.0% respectively by using of water as a solvent within 30 min at 2
$0^{\circ}C$ , 300 rpm of agitation speed and 10 of liquid/solid ratio. It is expected that the removal of Cl from the incineration ash by washing could make use of the ash for a cement raw material and so on. -
Oil fly ash is known as one source of raw materials from which vanadium and nickel metals can be recovered. The current recovery process of valuable metals from oil fly ash is mainly the hydrormetallurgy one. Nevertheless, a great amount about 50~80%, of unburned carbon remains as byproduct after hydrormetallursy process. In Taiwan, if hydrormetallursy processes have proceeded, it can be estimated that the annual production of unburned carbon is 25 thousand tons. From the viewpoint of resource recycling, this study is a preliminary study and investigates in recovery of sub micron- graphitized carbon from unburned carbon by a designed process. The designed process included the following steps: 1.selecting a portion with +400mesh size from unburned carbon; 2.treating the selected in ultrasonic waves; 3.using a 400mesh sieve to obtain the product which is under 400mesh; 4.Removal ash from the product. In regard to treatment by ultrasonic waves in the designed process, treating time of ultrasonic waves is a simple and only variance in this study. The results indicate that the production yields increase with the treating time of ultrasonic waves; the production yield in specific conditions of this study can reach about 23%, in which ash content in product is about 2.5%. According to results of SEM, TEM and XRD, the products from the designed process are flakes in shape, several microns in size and graphitized carbon in carbon crystal phase. Except to graphitized carbon, there are a little carbon blacks, which are graphite 2H in carbon crystal phase in the products. Conclusively, the designed process is possibly applicable, by which comes to the recovery of micron- graphitized carbon.

Macroporous pellets were prepared from industrial waste flyash by foaming method. The surface and inside of flyash pellets, the shape was almost spherical and the average size was about 3 mm, were composed of the spherical pores interconnected through windows. The controlling of pellet size was conducted with solid loading. The flyash pellets with different relative density were characterized for porosity, average pore size, and specific surface area. As results, most physical properties had a tendency to increase as relative density decreased - extension ratio increased. The correlation between relative density and other properties was inspected through microstructural features evaluated by SEM. As a result, high porosity and high specific surface area were estimated to result from the superior connectivity between pores.

A new electrostatic separator has been developed for the removal of unburned carbon from fly ash. In this separator, a flowing film of fly ash is created on the surface of a vibrating electrode. Conducting particles such as unburned carbon acquire electrostatic charges and jump out of the flowing film so that they can be removed from the non-conducting fly ash particles moving forward. The new separator has been tested successfully using a pilot-scale test unit at 0.5 tons/hr capacity. Based on the successful test results, a larger unit is being constructed at the present time.

To utilize municipal solid waste incineration ash as useful resources in Korea, studies on the present state of production and management of incineration ash and its effects on environment were made. And, it was intended to analyze the management conditions of incineration ash in many foreign countries and reflect them in domestic incineration ash policy. Korean incineration ash policy is based on the control of waste production, considering the difficulties in securing landfills and the small size of national land, and will be changed into recycling- and incineration-centered one. Furthermore, studies on the stabilization and recycling of incineration ash should be continuously conducted to overcome the concerns about environmental pollution.

The generation of fly ash tends to increase yearly so that this is currently considered a big environmental concern, which requires appropriate treatment approaches. In this research the consolidation of incineration fly ash by the hot-press solvothermal reaction was investigated to provide an alternative process for the treatment and utilization of this waste material. Results showed that at reaction conditions of 52 K treatment, 20 ㎫ pressure and 60 minutes treatment time, the resulting consolidate exhibited a compressive ness strengths of 37-40 ㎫, a tensile strength of 6.5-7.0 ㎫ and a Rockwell hardness of 20-23 RH15W. These properties are comparable to the compressive ness strength of Portland cement which ranges from 30-40 ㎫ as well as with the tensile strengths of mortar, ganite, artificial lightweight aggregate and solidified high connote whose values are 2-2.5 ㎫, 5-9 ㎫, 5-10 ㎫ and 3-5 ㎫ respectively- Furthermore, by mixing fly ash with glass at 50% ratio and then subjecting to similar treatment conditions, a consolidate with even higher tensile strength of 12.5-13.3 ㎫ and hardness of 77-80 RH15W may be achieved.

In Japan, the municipal solid waste, which amounts to 50 million tons, is generated every year and most of it is incinerated. The bottom and fly ashes are disposed to the registered disposal areas under the provisions of The Waste Disposal and Public Cleaning Law. Especially, as the fly ash from the municipal waste incineration (the primary fly ash) contains heavy metals (lead, zinc, etc) and dioxins, it cannot be disposed directly without decontamination, such as moiling, cementation, chelating and dissolving processes provided in the law. However, these procedures for decontamination, except melting, are not enough for dioxins. Even in case of melting, the fly ash from the process (the secondary fly ash) contains high concentration of heavy metals (e.g., Zn; 1-20%, Pb; 1-10%). For these reasons, Metal Mining Agency of Japan (MMAJ), a governmental organization, started a four-year project to develop the treatment technologies of these fly ashes in 1999. The purpose of the project is to establish the integrated technologies to recover the valuable metals from, and to decontaminate, the primary and secondary fly-ashes in the practical scale by utilizing the existing metallurgical processes and facilities, along with the energy saving and the reduction of the environmental impact.

Segregation of binary particle systems in a horizontally gyrated bed has been experimentally studied to recover the heavy metals from municipal waste incineration (MWI) ash. Differences in density and size had less effect on segregation. Effective segregation took place under the centrifugal effect of 1 or less for any particle size ratio. Zn, Cu and Pb were concentrated in the upper side of bed by the horizontal vibration. However, there was less change in concentration for other metals such as Mg, Al and Fe etc. The separation system with the horizontal gyrating separator proved to be an effective method for the pretreatment of recovering Zn, Cu and Pb from incineration residues.

And we analyzed problems and unreasonable regulations regarding the wastes. So we suggested an alternative act to increase the construction wastes recycling. -
The research is to discuss the current resource recycling and recovery policy, which was enacted by Environmental Protection Administrative (EPA) in Taiwan. For the past few years, the solid waste generated in Taiwan has greatly increased about 5 % per year. In addition to the construction of landfill sites and incineration plants, 4 R techniques (Reduction, Reuse, Recycle and Recovery) were also publicized among the citizens and then promulgated to furthermore manage these increased solid waste. Although the regulations have been carried out to a great success, they still need to be revised and updated since solid waste contains varieties of different materials. Therefore, this research discusses the current regulation and makes suggestion for future regulation revision. From the results of this study, energy recovery was suggested to be emphasized in the regulation. Energy could be recovered from materials such as waste tires, and all kinds of plastic containers. Waste tires and most of the plastic containers made of hydrocarbon species, which contains great heating values, should be considered as one of the alternatives for the resource recycling.

Since establishment some 25 year ago, AMITA Corporation has continued its attempts in meeting customer needs, in reducing costs for waste treatment. The solutions we have proposed in the past made use of our networks entailing Japan as well as the East Asian region. However, as enterprises have changed their perspective approaching environmental issues recently, as needs diversify, AMITA too has been changing its strategy to incorporate the use of Information Technology to provide consulting services. AMITA has set its goals in promoting modernization of the waste treatment industry, and optimizing the recycling market to reduce environmental impacts.

Along with the expansion of industrial activities, the quantity of industrial waste sludge is increasing, and the treatment/disposal of wastes is a social problem regarding the preservation of the environment. In particular, recycling the sludge as a raw material is actively required considering the situation of Korea, which is poor in natural resources and energy. Lime is a necessity for treatment of waste sludge, which often can be made recyclable by lime treatment. In this thesis, a brief description has been given of my views on the ordinary treatment of waste sludge and the effective use of inorganic industrial waste sludge focusing on lime.

Until tile 1980s, the disposal of End of Life Vehicles (ELV) was considered unproblematic in Japan, Korea. and Taiwan. But in recent years, as environmental problems have attracted increasing attention. the processing oi ELV has become one of the most critical environmental issues. Discarded ELV represent a serious source of waste generation and pollution. In this paper, I will analyze the ELV problem from three view points: 1) ELV abandoned in the environment; 2) Significant environmental hazards caused by dismantling operations; and 3) Problems of how to deal with Automobile Shredder Residue (ASR).

This paper establishes a coding method system including the liberation and size distribution of recycling materials in the shredder operation. Every particle in the shredded product becomes a code number using the liberation model and size distribution equation transforming of weight percentage into particles number percentage. One set of database can be obtained after all particles have been coded. This database is suitable for the size reduction operation in the process simulation of waste recycling. Coupling with the developed air classification, sizing and separating operations, the whole process simulation will be completely established for diversified application. A typical simulation for the rolling cutting shredder product of waste TV had been demonstrated under this coding system. The breakage size distribution of Gaudin and Schumann equation were selected for the shredding operation simulation. The Gaudin's liberation model was suitable fur the liberation simulation. Both of these equations were transformed weight percentage into particles distribution for the necessary of particle coding method. A better recycling operation for this shredded solid waste can be concluded from the comparison of simulation results with their sorted grade, recovery or economic of materials in different processes.

Until recently, disposal to landfill has been the most convenient way to deal with the increasing amount of residues the shredding industries produce. But the shortage of such disposal sites and the risk that liquid drained from these waste dusts may pollute ground water have increased the environmental pressures to find more effective solutions. The present study is an alternative approach that suggests identifying waste dusts characteristics and selecting an appropriate binder for hazardous materials to reduce the amount of contaminants (mainly lead) that were leaking into the soil. Investigations on the characteristics of automobiles waste dusts show that these materials are composed mainly of cottons and sponge like substances, plastics, rubber, glasses and gravel, metals, and electric wires. Besides, the percentage in weight of organic (inflammable) materials is about 70% and the lead contamination, which has not a ionic but a particulate nature, is particularly remarkable in cottons and sponge like materials. Binding additives such as K-20 and sodium carbonate were not effective but the addition of 5 % of cement (in weight of the investigated sample) followed by a 3-minute stirring and a 4-hour storage could drastically reduce the run off of lead below the maximum authorized level. No addition of water was necessary in this method. -
So for the quartz-glassy crucible wastes which was used for pulling up silicon-single-crystal ingot have simply reused for refractory raw-materials, or exhausted. This study is concerned on the advanced recycling-technology that is obtained by the proper micro-particle preparation process in order to fabricate fine amorphous silica filler for EMC (Epoxy Molding Compound). Therefore, this paper will deal with the physical, chemical and thermal pre-treatment process for efficient impurity removal and with the proper micro-particle process for producing the amorphous silicafiller. In view of the results, if the chemical, physical and thermal pre-treatment process for efficient elimination of impurity was passed, the purity of wasted fused glassy crucible is almost equal to the its of first anhydrous quartz glass. Thus, it was understood that this wasted fused glassy crucible was sufficient value of recycling, though it was damaged. When the ingot was fabricated, Phase transformation of crystallization by heat treatment (heat hysteresis phenomenon) was not changed. So, it was understood that as fused silica in the amorphous state, as It is, recycling possibility was very high

A new technology to make fluoride gas such as NF
$_3$ contained in the exhaust gas from semiconductor manufacturing plants convert directly into a harmless substance have been established and new concept on the disposal treatment of global warming gases were presented. Experimental results verify that the chemical reactions can be take place at substantially lower temperature of 80-40$0^{\circ}C$ as compared with the combustion treatment method. Reaction product is mainly metal fluoride which is a harmless and a valuable chemical material as one of new resources. The other favorable characteristics are that the continuous treatment is possible at a low temperature under atmospheric pressure. Furthermore this process is compact, easily controllable and safely operable at low running cost. This paper concerns with a new harmless disposal treatment of toxic global warming gas. -
This study uses traditional alum coagulation and sedimentation process to treat CMP wastewater from cleaning after polishing. The primary goal is to successfully recycle both solid fines and water for semiconductor manufacturing. Results indicated that CMP wastewater may be successfully treated to recover clean water and fine particles by alum coagulation. The optimum operating conditions for coagulation are as fellowing: alum dosage of 10 ppm, pH at 5, rapid mixing speed at 800 rpm, 5 min rapid mixing time, and long slow mixing time. The treated water with low turbidity and an average residual aluminum ion concentration of 0.23 ppm may be considered for reuse. The settled sludge after alum coagulation contains mainly SiO
$_2$ particle with a minor content of aluminum (1.7 wt%) may be considered as raw materials for glass and ceramic industry. -

The objective of this investigation was to separate silicon and silica for recycling by the liquid-liquid separation technique. In the preparation of silicon (Si) single crystal, a small amount of silicon is fixed on the surface of silica (quartz,$SiO_2$ ) crucible. The used crucible is crushed for recycling both silicon and silica in a high purity from the mixed powder. Zeta-potential of silicon and silica are almost the same at pH higher than 3. Their separation by simple flotation is ruled out. However, their hydrophobic characteristics are different in several different organic solvent from the measurement of contact angle. Therefore, the liquid-liquid extraction is employed to separate silicon and silica. The result indicates that the organic solvent mixed with dodecyl ammonium acetate could extracted the silicon powder at high purity (97-100%) with high recovery from the silica powder in the water phase. -
The air separation of PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) and PS(Polystyrene) was carried out by taking advantage of the different abrasive resistance of two plastics. PET bottles and PS packages were shredded to small square pieces
$(5{\times}5mm)$ . Both plastic shreds were treated by a shear-type crusher. The PET shreds were bent and twisted by the crush so that they were blown up easily, but the PS shreds were not. After the crush of mixture of both plastics, air separation experiments were carried out using four types of air separators. The number and location of the baffle attached to them are different. With the separator with a baffle attached at the upper part, PET recoveries for the crushing time of 30, 60 and 90sec were 67, 98 and 99% respectably at the air flow rate of 3.5m/s, whereas PS recoveries were null regardless of the crushing time. -
Separation of PET and PVC is a key technology to achieve effective plastics recycling but no efficient and economically feasible method has been developed yet. The application of flotation was investigated by many researchers but the causes of the selectivity were not clarified. This paper described the adsorption mechanism of wetting agents onto plastics, using the agents which have various polarity and hydrocarbon chain length. It was found that (1) hydrophobic interaction played a predominant role for the adsorption, (2) anionic wetting agents could be adsorbed onto negatively charged plastics with the polar radicals oriented outer part of the plastics, then often depressed plastics more effectively than cationic agents, and (3) PET and PVC could be separated with dodecyamine hydrochloride and sodium dodecyl- sulfonate in the concentration ranges of 1.0
$\times$ 10$^{[-10]}$ $^{6}$ -5.0$\times$ 10$^{[-10]}$ $^{5}$ and 2.0$\times$ 10$^{[-10]}$ $^{6}$ -1.0$\times$ 10$^{[-10]}$ $^{5}$ mo1/1, respectively. -
A study was conducted in order to remove PVC from the waste plastic film mixture. The fittings of Air Table was modified to increase the separation efficiency of PVC. By using the improved air table, the PE and PVC was successfully separated from PVC-PE film mixture with the yield of PE 90% or more and with the content of PVC in PE 1% or less. The detail of the separation condition and result will be discussed in this paper.

We carried out aminolyses of various rigid polyurethane foams (PUFs) using diethylene triamine and studied application of the aminolysis products as hardners of epoxy resins. Diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A was used for the study on the curing behavior of epoxy resin with the aminolysis product employing differential scanning calorimeter. Curing reaction of the epoxy resin is generally known to be autocatalytic second order reaction. We found that the curing reaction of the epoxy resin with the aminolysis product of rigid PUF did not show autocatalytic characteristics but followed the n-th order kinetics. The activation energy of the curing reaction of the epoxy resin with the aminolysis product of rigid PUF made from sugar based polyol was slightly lower than that of the epoxy resin with aminolysis product of rigid with made from amine based polyol.

Plastics are one of difficult materials for recycling due to their characteristics in use. Recycling ratio of waste plastics was around 40% in last year in Japan, which includes energy recovery. Feed stock recycling and mechanical recycling are not easy because of additives in commercial plastics. Then, pyrolysis treatments have been done to recovery energy. Although plastics are easy to fire, complete combustion of them is not easy if anti-firing agents are added especially. Therefore, researches on pyrolysis or combustion behaviors of plastics containing additives are important from a view point recycling of plastics. Direct observation of popular plastics like polystyrene (PS), polycarbonate (PC), polyphenyle ether (PPE) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) to investigate their pyrolysis behaviors in the present study. In case of PS, melting and gas evolution started at 9
$0^{\circ}C$ and 39$0^{\circ}C$ respectively. And combustion finished at 445$^{\circ}C$ . On the other hand, more than$600^{\circ}C$ and sufficient oxygen are required for complete combustion of PC and PPE. -
The heat treatment of PVC film containing PVC 65%, DOP(Dioctyl Phthalate) 32% as plasticizer, Ca-Zn stearates and surface agent was peformed under several conditions to study the degradation behavior of PVC sheet. In the case of H
$_2$ SO$_4$ , the dehydrochlorination was ca.100% at 25$0^{\circ}C$ for 3h. The char involving the smaller pores was produced with hydrothermal treatment. The pore size became small with increasing the treatment time and temperature. In the case of treatment with Ca(OH)$_2$ , the sizes of pores produced in char were about sever ~ 10${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ at 2$25^{\circ}C$ for 12h. In the case of H$_2$ SO$_4$ , the size of pores were about l${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in 5M H$_2$ SO$_4$ for 12h. -
A possibility of using waste plastics as a source of secondary fuel in blast furnace has been of recent interest. The success of this process, however, will be critically dependent upon the optimization of operating systems. for instance, the supply of waste plastics must be reliable as well as economically attractive compared with conventional secondary fuels such as heavy oil, natural gas and pulverized coal. In this work, we put special importance on the improvement of the combustibility of waste plastics as a way to enhance energy efficiency in blast furnace. As experimental variables to approach this target, the effects of plastic particle size, blast temperature, and the level of oxygen enrichment were investigated using a custom-made blast model designed to simulate a real furnace. Lastly, the combustion efficiency of the mixture of waste plastics and pulverized coal was tested. The observations made from these experiments led us to the conclusion that with the increase of both blast temperature and the level of oxygen enrichment, and with the decrease of particle size, the combustibility of waste PE could be improved at a given distance from tuyere. Also it was found that the efficiency of coal combustion decreased with the addition of plastics; however, the combustion efficiency of mixture could be comparable at longer distance from tuyere.

Most of the waste plastics are incinerated and landfilled now, leading to much environmental problems. The technology of injection into the blast furnace was developed as a useful recycling method of waste plastics, and applied to the actual operation in several ironmaking companies. We carried out the test operation to inject continuously the two kinds of waste plastics through four tuyeres of the Foundry blast furnace in POSCO by 130 ton of total amount. From this test operation, we analyzed the coke replacement ratio, the permeability, the heat load and other changes of furnace conditions with the injection of waste plastics into the blast furnace. Some trials based upon the theoretical approaches were applied to examine the efficiencies of blast furnace.

The separation performance of zigzag air classifier with angle of 90 degrees was studied using narrow size fractions of thin square samples and granular samples. The simulation results of air velocity inside the classifier indicated that the zigzag geometry induces a new pattern consisting of an upward flow and a circulation flow, Experimental results showed that overflow product recovery was described as an integral calculus of normal distribution as a function of dimensionless air velocity ($V_{A}$ $V_{A50}$ ), where$V_{A}$ is superficial air velocity and$V_{A50}$ is the$V_{A}$ at the fifty percent recovery. The$V_{A}$ values were predicted using the equations derived from dynamics for a particle dropping in air. A monitoring system that utilizes changes in acoustic signals emitted during the process of air classification was developed to separate PET with desired recovery or grade. The technical feasibility of the on-line monitoring of the PET recovery and grade was demonstrated by measuring relative energy of the signals.signals.als. -
The refuse-derived fuel(RDF) is manufactured using waste plastics-based materials and its physical and chemical properties are analyzed. The manufacturing process consists of hand picking, primary magnetic separation, crushing, secondary magnetic separation, feeding and extrusion. The RDF products have a higher calorie content of over 6, 000 ㎉/kg and high stability because the waste plastics and paper are mainly selected. The combustion flue gas of RDF products is satisfied with the emission criteria of incinerator. The heavy metal concentration of combustion byproduct from the RDF boiler is also satisfied with the criteria and appears to be lower concentration than that of a common municipal waste incinerator.

Effects of magnetic field and carrier gas velocity on the magnetic separation of FCC catalyst by a high gradient magnetic separator were studied. The activities of the equilibrium catalyst, the magnetic particles and the nonmagnetic particles were evaluated in a fixed bed microreactor The results showed that heavy metal contaminated catalyst can be selectively separated by means of high gradient magnetic separation at magnetic field 0.5T and carrier gas velocity 0.3m.s
$^{-1}$ , and lightly metal contaminated catalyst retained high catalytic activity.
