This study assessed the health risks of childhood exposure to PBDEs via different possible pathways in children's facilities and indoor playgrounds. When PBDE contamination was measured, it was determined through multiple routes, including inhalation of indoor dust, dermal contact with product surfaces and children's hands, and incidental dust ingestion. Samples were collected from various children's facilities (playrooms, daycare centers, kindergartens, and indoor playgrounds) during summer (Jul-Sep, 2007) and winter (Jan-Feb, 2008). The hazard index (HI) was estimated for non-carcinogens, and PBDEs, such as TeBDE, PeBDE, HxBDE, and DeBDE, were examined. The sensitivity to the compounds did not exceed 1.0 (HI) for any of the subjects in any facility. However, current data about toxicity does not reflect effects that were fully sensitive in children, so there is uncertainty in the dose-response data. The contribution rates of PBDEs were 71.4 to 96.1% and 3.7 to 28.2% for intake and inhalation exposure, respectively, indicating that intake of floor dust and inhalation are the primary routes.
This study explored age and sex differences in preschoolers' narrative representations of their mothers. Subjects were 120 3-, 4-, 5- and 6-year-old children, with 15 boys and 15 girls in each age group. Using the MacArthur Story Stem Battery(Bretherton et al., 1990), observations were made to obtain children's narrative representations of their mothers. content themes and emotional responses. Boys' representations were more negative and less positive than girls' regardless of their age. Boys talked about more aggressive themes and showed more anxiety and less joy. Five and 6-year-old children had less negative and disciplinary representations of their mothers than 3- and 4-year-olds. Six-year-olds showed less prosocial themes than 3- and 5-years, and fewer aggressive themes than 3-and 4-year while they showed less joy, distress and concern responses than 3-years.
Purpose: This retrospective study assessed the effectiveness of submucosal (SM) midazolam (M), oral chloral hydrate (CH), hydroxyzine (H), and nitrous oxide (N) 99 uncooperative pediatric dental patients over 182 sedation sessions. Methods: Selection criteria included good medical health (ASA I), from 2 to 6 years of age, uncooperative behavior, and the need for restorations and dental surgery. The children who was administerated with CH H, N was Group 1 (48 case). The children who was administerated with CH, H, N, M was Group 2 (51 case). All the patients received oral CH (50-70 mg/Kg), H (1 mg/Kg) and N (less than 50%). Additionally the Group 2 received SM midazolam (0.1-0.2 mg/kg). Behavior response was rated as quiet (Q), crying (C), movement (M), or struggling (S) every 5 minutes through operative procedures. Behavior response rating was assigned to Houpt scale of Overall behavior. Data was analyzed using Chi-Square Test. Results: The Group 2 had more effective (88.2%) than the Group 1 (68.8%)(P = 0.05). Also, vomiting response decreased in the Group 2 (94.4%) than those with oral administration of chloral hydrate alone without SM midazolam (77.1%)(P = 0.05). Conclusions: SM midazolam improved the quality of sedation and vomiting response.
Objectives : This study was to collect data about oral health to develop preschool children' oral health program. Methods : This research was from July 20th to August 20th, 2008 with self-administrated questionnaires by post and e-mail. The response rate was 57.6%(144 of 250). Results : 1. Daycare center provided fruit(64.6%), bread(56.9%), milk(82.6%), yoghurt(47.9%). daycare center tend to provide cariogenic snacks and drinks such as bread, yoghurt. 2. 73.6% of teachers said they reward children with sweets for good behavior. 3. Activities related to oral health was done in daycare center were : children brush their teeth with fluoride toothpaste(79.9%), catering staff receive the education about nutrition(79.2%), children participate in the activities and training related to food(78.5%), using sugary food at a birthday party(77.3%), annual dental health check-up by a dentist(65.3%). 4. The percentages of guiding principles based on documentation in the topic of the oral health were : coping with a situation where a child injured his or her teeth(76.4%), annual dental health checkup by a dentist(72.2%), teachers supervise children's tooth brushing using a fluoride toothpaste(70.8%). 5. Documented guide or course for oral health includes the following; training for coping with tooth damage(76.4%), annual dental health check-up(72.2%), and coaching children to brush their teeth with toothpaste that contains fluoride(70.8%). Conclusions : It is believed that for better children's oral healthcare, childcare teacher should be given a range of in-depth oral health program. Furthermore, through detailed analysis on the documented guide of oral health, cooperation from the associated organization will be required to have the guide placed at the childcare center.
The objective of this study consists in promoting seafood consumption by increasing its intake opportunities for children through analysis of seafood using frequency in the elementary school lunch program. For that purpose, randomly sampled out from elementary schools through the county were 155 dietitians and 5th grade 3581 children, on whom a mail survey was conducted to analyse their seafood using frequency, and preference, and lunch menu by seasons. Results of this study are as follows : The seafood using frequency of the respondents represented the highest value in one or two times a week, while obstacles in seafood use presented high values in the safety of food by 71.6% and children preference by 68.4%. The seafood intake frequency of the respondents showed the highest value in three or four times a week by 34.5% and the places of seafood intake indicated the highest response in the home by 43.5% and then school lunch and dining out. The dietitians responded that children for the most part had not a preference for seafood, whereas the children pointed out average by 46.2%. As for reasons for avoidance of seafood, the dietitians expressed the highest response in it depends cooking methods by 45.8%, while the children because of its peculiar taste and smell by 42.1%. Their required improvement showed the highest response in the taste improvement by 51.8%. The children most preference for seafood that dietitians thought included fried Alaska pollack and shrimp cutlet, while dislikes braised mackerels and seasoned cold jelly fish. Cooking methods frequently used were represented in order of soup, hot soup, and stew, and the children's preferred cooking method was from fried food. Above results suggested that the intention to increase seafood using frequency is needed to at the time of planning the menus so that more seafood-providing opportunities can be given. The development of cooking methods is urgently needed that can change the taste or the smell of seafood, and concurrently with this conveniences be taken into account in eating such as elimination of bones, etc. as early as the states of purchase or checking of seafood. The reflection of the preferred cooking methods is thought to contribute to the enhancement of satisfaction with the seafood as well as to the reduction of food remnants. The recommendation of intake of low preference but nutritionally good seafood is required to be expanded in nutrition education.
Purpose: This pilot study was to develop Korean version of CDI(The Child Development Inventory) and assess the validation and reliability on K-CDI. Method: The K-CDI is assessed by parent-report method that has designed to screen children developmental functioning on 12 months to 6.5 years of age /or older children who are judged to be functioning in the one to six-year range. The inventory assesses areas of child development in the social, self-help, motor, language, letter and number skills. also, it includes various symptoms and behavior problems that young children may have. Participants were 130 children and their mothers who has lived in Seoul or Gyounggi-Do. Data was analyzed on the ratio of item response, Pearson's correlation, and Cronbach alpha. Results: 270 items with 8 sub-developmental realms were confirmed the reliabilities and validity on Korean children. Total 300 items were selected for restandardization. There was a significant correlation between the score of Social Maturity Scale and K-CDI. The corrlation coefficient alpha was .98. Conclusion: This study indicated that CDI is applicable in the clinical and early childhood educational setting for developmental assessment in Korea.

Objectives : Children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have been shown to display more inhibitory deficits and executive function deficits. This study investigated the treatment effects of neurofeedback (NF) training on executive function by comparing the results of neuropsychological tests of the trained children at pre- and post-training. Methods : Fifteen children with ADHD, aged 6 to 14 years, participated in the study. The NF treatment consisted of slow cortical potential (SCP) training and these sessions took place once a week. The ADHD children performed 20 sessions of NF training within 6 months. Pre-training and post-training assessments encompassed Continuous Performance Test (CPT), Stroop Test, Children's Color Trails Test I&II (CCTT) and Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST). Results : Patients receiving NF training showed significant improvement in visual commission error and standard deviation of auditory response time on CPT ; and total errors on WCST. But there was no significant improvement in the Stroop test and CCTT. Conclusion : SCP training using NF improves the self-regulatory capacities and impulsivity in ADHD patient, especially impulsivity in visual stimulation tasks. This study showed evidence of clinical efficacy of NF on executive function in ADHD.
Purpose: The present study is a descriptive research on the content of sex education conducted at home by the mothers of young children who are attending five kindergartens located in Busan, Korea. This study aims to provide basic materials for systematic sex education at home and in the school. Method: Based on the literature review and prior researches, the writer made a questionnaire consisting of 30 items regarding necessities, contents and difficulties of sex education. The 307 questionnaires were collected out of 480 which were distributed by the kindergarten teachers. Data was analysed with frequency and percentage using the SPSS Win 10.0 Program. The main subjects of the study were mothers in their thirties, who understood the necessity of sex education. However, they were lack of enough sexual knowledge in accordance with the transforming sexual culture and lack of suitable materials. They did not plan to educate their children according to their developmental stages, but just taught them verbally rather than using common materials for the situation. Result Regarding the origin of life that children often asks, mothers did not give a scientific and correct response to satisfy their curiosity about sex, saying that a baby was created after marrying a loved one. While more mothers than the prior research responded correctly to the queries of the path of delivery, some mothers did not. It may cause some children to suppress the questions, which may result a distorted sexual knowledge. That is because mothers understood that sex education was to deliver sexual knowledge, but not realized that sex education was a human education carried out throughout life. Mothers fell short of sexual knowledge, capability, and confidence, comparing with swift social changes and children's capacity. As a result, it is necessary to inspire sexual awareness into mothers and educate them through training. It is also needed to secure a training program similar to a teacher training program. Conclusion: It is essential to develop and to provide evaluation tools as well as proper materials in accordance with the children's developmental stage, so that organic management system among home, education institute and society must lead sex education Further, it is necessary to provide teaching methods and materials to mothers regularly, so that the school and home may conduct sex education together to cope with difficulties.
Purpose: This study aims to examine perceived safety management in teachers working for young children with disabilities, to grasp the state and problems of safety management and first-aid education at daycare center for young children with disabilities, and to provide basic materials to develop programs for safety management and first-aid education. Results: 1. For the perception items of accident possibility in daycare centers, career with more than 10 years had higher response in 'very high' and 'moderately high' than 'moderately or very low' and statistically significant difference was found(p < .05). 2. For the perception items of accident prevention in daycare centers, no teaches with at least college education thought that 'it was not possible to prevent' and most of them thought that 'it was totally possible to prevent' and statistically significant difference was found(p < .05). 3. For the performance level of safety management and first-aid items, forty and over(4.73) showed higher than age of 20-29(4.32) and 30-39 of age(4.26) and statistically significant difference was found(p < .05). 4. For the knowledge level of safety management and first aid items, the highest religion was found as Christian(16.96), followed by Catholic(15.33), Buddhism(14.91), and no religion(15.81) and statistically significant difference was found(p < .05). 5. For the items of confidence in safety management and first aid, performance level, and knowledge level, teachers who competed safety management and first-aid education( 4,48) had higher performance score than those who did not (4.17) and statistically significant difference was found(p < .05). 6. For the items of confidence in safety management and first aid, performance level, and knowledge level, teachers who competed first-aid education(2.77) had higher confidence than those who did not(2.35) and statistically significant difference was found(p < .05). Conclusion: The results suggest that safety management and first-aid education in teachers working for daycare center for young children with disabilities was closely correlated with knowledge and performance levels. Thus, it is necessary to provide continuous safety management and first-aid education for teachers working for day care center for young children with disabilities through regular in-service training. Also further research should be conducted with all subjects and various regions who contact with young children with disabilities.
Recent studies on pediatric inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have revealed that early-onset IBD has distinct phenotypic differences compared with adult-onset IBD. In particular, very early-onset IBD (VEO-IBD) differs in many aspects, including the disease type, location of the lesions, disease behavior, and genetically attributable risks. Several genetic defects that disturb intestinal epithelial barrier function or affect immune function have been noted in these patients from the young age groups. In incidence of pediatric IBD in Korea has been increasing since the early 2000s. Neonatal or infantile-onset IBD develops in less than 1% of pediatric patients. Children with "neonatal IBD" or "infantile-onset IBD" have higher rates of affected first-degree relatives, severe disease course, and a high rate of resistance to immunosuppressive treatment. The suspicion of a monogenic cause of VEO-IBD was first confirmed by the discovery of mutations in the genes encoding the interleukin 10 (IL-10) receptors that cause impaired IL-10 signaling. Patients with such mutations typically presented with perianal fistulae, shows a poor response to medical management, and require early surgical interventions in the first year of life. To date, 60 monogenic defects have been identified in children with IBD-like phenotypes. The majority of monogenic defects presents before 6 years of age, and many present before 1 year of age. Next generation sequencing could become an important diagnostic tool in children with suspected genetic defects especially in children with VEO-IBD with severe disease phenotypes. VEO-IBD is a phenotypically and genetically distinct disease entity from adult-onset or older pediatric IBD.
