Objectives : We retrospectively investigated the efficacy and tolerability of risperidone monotherapy in subjects with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In addition, we did mixed effect model analysis of the effects of risperidone in patients with ASDs naturalistically treated in a routine clinical setting to determine whether the clinical effects were maintained and the side effects were tolerable. Methods : This retrospective study assessed children and adolescents with ASD, who were on risperidone monotherapy from July 2010 to July 2011 at the Child and Adolescent ASD Clinic at Seoul National Hospital. Outcome measures included the Clinical Global Impression-Severity of Illness (CGI-S) and the CGI-Improvement (CGI-I) scales along with other clinical indices: dosage, target symptoms, and side effects. Results : The mean dose of risperidone in 47 children and adolescents with ASD (40 males, 7 females; age range 5-19 years) who were on risperidone monotherapy was $1.6{\pm}0.8mg/day$, and the mean duration of the treatment period was $20.2{\pm}17.3months$. Aggressive behavior, stereotypic behavior, irritability, and self-injurious behavior were the most frequent target symptoms of risperidone. The most common side effects were weight gain followed by somnolence and extrapyramidal symptoms. In a mixed effects model analysis of CGI-I scores, the mean CGI-I score at the 1 month follow-up was significantly different from the mean CGI-I score of the 3-month follow-up (p=.046), and the CGI-I scores were equally maintained over 3 to 48 months [F(6, 28.9)=4.393, p=.003]. Of the 47 patients, 33 patients (70.2%) were identified as the response group, showing an end point CGI-I rating of 3 or under and having continued risperidone treatment for at least 6 months. The baseline CGI-S score showed significant association with clinical response to risperidone (p=.005), the mean baseline CGI-S was higher in the response group compared to the non-response group. Conclusion : In this study, clinical improvement of risperidone stabilized around 3 months and was equally maintained up to 48 months with tolerable side effects, supporting maintenance of risperidone treatment in children and adolescents with ASDs.
This study develops and examines the validity of a Creativity Test for children from of 4 to 7. 47 items were constructed through the validity of the literature and expert's content validity. The results of this study consisted of 22 items with three factors. These factors are flow and independence, expansion of thinking, curiosity and openness. The tests scale was examined about item's response distribution, item's discrimination, and construct validity and internal consistency reliability, and it was adoptable. It can be concluded that the test tool developed in this study is suitable for measuring the creativity of Korean children from 4 to 7 years in a simple manner, and it measures relatively well the cognitive and affective characteristics of creativity. Creativity test tool for children from 4 to 7 years in this study will contribute to the active progress of research on creativity for young children and elementary school children.

Purpose: To determine the clinical significance of voriconazole therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) in the pediatric population. Methods: Twenty-eight patients with invasive fungal infections administered with voriconazole from July 2010 to June 2012 were investigated retrospectively. Fourteen received TDM, and 143 trough concentrations were analyzed. All 28 patients were assessed for adverse events and treatment response six weeks into treatment, and at the end. Results: Out of 143 samples, 53.1% were within therapeutic range (1.0-5.5 mg/L). Patients administered with the same loading (6 mg/kg/dose) and maintenance (4 mg/kg/dose) dosages prior to initial TDM showed highly variable drug levels. Adverse events occurred in 9 of 14 patients (64.3%) in both the TDM and non-TDM group. In the TDM group, voriconazole-related encephalopathy (n=2, 14.3%) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) or alanine aminotransferase (ALT) elevation (n=8, 57.1 %) occurred with serum levels in the toxic range (>5.5 mg/L), whereas blurred-vision (n=2, 14.3%) occurred within the therapeutic range (1.18 mg/L and 3.9 mg/L). The frequency of voriconazole discontinuation due to adverse events was lower in the TDM group (0.0% vs. 18.2%, P =0.481). Overall, 57.2% of the patients in the TDM group versus 14.3% in the non-TDM group showed clinical response after 6 weeks (P =0.055), whereas 21.4% in the TDM group versus 14.3% in the non-TDM group showed response at final outcome (P =0.664). In the TDM group, >67.0% of the serum levels were within therapeutic range for the first 6 weeks; however 45.5% were within therapeutic range for the entire duration. Conclusion: Routine TDM is recommended for optimizing the therapeutic effects of voriconazole.
Purpose: The goal of this study was to analyze the degree of stress and methods of coping with stress in mothers of cerebral palsied children and to provide a basic resource for the development of policies to improve the mental health of mothers with cerebral palsied children. Methods: 85 mothers with cerebral palsied children and 77 mothers of normal children completed a self-administered questionnaire that evaluated the degree of stress and methods of coping with stress. Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ score was used to determine the internal consistency of the acquired data and the discriminated validity was estimated by Pearson's correlation coefficient. Independent t-tests were conducted to compare the degree of stress and method of coping with stress between mothers of cerebral palsied children and mothers of normal children and one-way ANOVA was performed to analyze the effect of generalized characteristics on stress in mothers of cerebral palsied children. Results: The degree of stress in terms of anxiety response and roles as mother for mothers with cerebral palsied children was higher than mothers with normal children. However, there was no significant difference between two group in regards to the methods of coping with stress during a stressful episode. The degree of stress for mothers with cerebral palsied children was greater when the child was younger. Conclusion: Mothers of cerebral palsied children had higher stress than that of mothers with normal children and felt more stress when their child was younger. Therefore, these results suggest that health-based policies should be developed to improve the mental health of mothers with cerebral palsied children.
The purpose of this study is to develop and validate a maternal happiness scale which can be used for mothers who take care of young children, school-aged children, and adolescents. First, the maternal happiness scale was developed based on literature review and the consent of experts. Finally it was consisted of 56 items from 18 elements of happiness through checking the contents validity with professionals. Second, final respondents for the survey were 1300 mothers who had children with and without disabilities in Seoul, Busan, Gyeonggi, and Kyungnam. Third, the 8 factors including the 53 items were extracted through the mothers' appraisal of the items and the review of the adequacy for the factor analysis. The 8 factors were consisted with 'Family relations with family', 'Laid-back life and self-esteem', 'Physical and mental health', 'Independency and development', 'Spirituality', 'Interpersonal relations', 'Appearance', 'Sociocultual environment'. Fourth, the maternal happiness scale demonstrated appropriate levels of construct validity, item internal consistency, distribution of item response, and item discrimination. The results of this study enhance our understanding of the core factors of maternal happiness. In addition, the findings have implications for supporting mothers who take care of young children, school-aged children, and adolescents.
Clinical and epidemiologic data point to a causal interrelationship between nutritional deficiency and infectious illness. Both are major contributors to childhood morbidity and mortality, particulary in underprivileged population groups. Protein-calorie malnutrition depress a variety of immune funtions. Delayed hypersensitivity and number of T-lymphocytes are consistently reduced. The interrelationship between nutritional status and immune response was studied in 80 children aged under 6 years. According to the anthropometric assessment based on weight for height for age, 36 children were classified as normal, 22 as morderate malnutrition, and 22 as severe malnutrition. The following determinations were made : hemeglobin, hematocrit, serum albumin, immunoglobulin G, complement 3, and WBC levels. Results indicate that levels of Hb, Hct, serum albumin, and C3 concentration were decreased in moderate and severe malnutrition children. However, levels of IgG and WBC were not affected by the nutritional status. It is suggested that nutritional status has more profound effects on complement system than humoral immunity.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the research trend of robot education for young children and elementary students as a basic study for the development of hands-on robot program for young children. Trends by year, research contents, and effectiveness of 155 dissertations and journal papers from 2006 to May 2016 related to robot education for young children and elementary students were analyzed. The results were as follows. In the research subject, research was conducted in the order of integrated education, attitudes and awareness research, and response research for young children and programming education, design development research, and integrated education for elementary students. In the research method, observational research and development research were the most common in young children and elementary students, respectively. In the effectiveness validation, research on social and emotional interaction and research on creativity were the most common in young children and elementary students, respectively. Based on the results of this study, the analysis provided basic data for the development of programs for young children's hands-on robot activities and suggested the direction and implications of robot education in connection with SW education of young children and elementary students.
Objectives Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder(ADHD) is a type of psychiatric disorder characterized with the primary symptoms of inattention and/or impulsivity and hyperactivity. The purpose of this study is to examine ADHD children who were treated with neurofeedback therapy. Methods We analyzed clinical report of 3 ADHD children who treated with neurofeedback therapy from January 2006 to June 2006. Results 1. All 3 children were diagnosed with predominantly inattention type of ADHD. 2. After treatment, cognitive strength, response, concentration, workload, left / right brain activity score were all different from each children. 3. After treatment, left and right brain activities were balanced. 4. After treatment, learning ability level was increased. 5. After treatment, the childrenwere in a better state referred to conner's scale and H.S.Q. score. Conclusions Further studies will be needed to get more clinical cases about the benefits of neurofeedback therapy with herbal medicine and acupuncture treatment.

The Korean Society of Pediatric Infectious Diseases and the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued the guidelines about coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) for children and adolescents. Case definitions and management of COVID-19 in neonates, infants, children and adolescents are presented in this guideline. In addition, guidelines for caregiver management are also provided. In this review, we introduce the contents of the current guidelines for COVID-19 in children and adolescents in Korea.
