  • Overall experiments were planned by central composite design, and results were analyzed by response surface methodology (RSM) to determine effects of three independent variables, temperature ($X_{1}$), extraction time ($X_{3}$), and pressure ($X_{3}$), on yield of sesame oil extract (Y). Regression equation model optimized by response surface analysis was: Y (sesame oil) = $-3.89+0.07X_{1}+0.03X_{2}+0.0006X_{3}-0.0007X_{1}^{2}-0.0002X_{2}X_{1}-0.00008X_{2}^{2}+0.000004X_{3}X_{1}+0.0000009X_{3}X_{2}-0.00000009X_{3}^{2}$. According to RSM analysis, optimum extracting conditions of temperature, time, and pressure were $45.89^{\circ}C$, 131.89 min, and 34228.41 kPa, respectively, and statistical maximum yield of sesame oil was 96.27%. Fatty acid composition of sesame oil showed sesame oil extracted by Supereritical Fluid $CO_{2}$ contained lower levels of palmitic, stcaric, and oleic acids and higher levels or palmitoleic and linoleic acids than commercial sesame oil. Commercial and extracted sesame oils were analyzed by electronic nose composed of 12 different metal oxide sensors. Obtained data were interpreted by statistical method of MANOVA. Sensitivities of sensors from electronic nose were analysed by principal component analysis. Proportion of first principal component was 99.92%. All sesame oils showed different odors (p < 0.05).

  • Since late of 2000, KIER has developed a novel pyrolysis process for production of fuel oils from polymer wastes. It could have been possible due to large-scale funding of the Resource Recycling R&D Center. The target was to develop an uncatalyzed, continuous and automatic process producing oils that can be used as a fuel for small-scale industrial boilers. The process development has proceeded in three stages bench-scale unit, pilot plant and demonstration plant. As a result, the demonstration plant having capacity of 3,000 tons/year has been constructed and is currently under test operation for optimization of operation conditions. The process consisted of four parts ; feeding system, cracking reactor, refining system and others. Raw materials were pretreated via shredding and classifying to remove minerals, water, etc. There were 3 kind of products, oils(80%), gas(15%), carbonic residue(5%). The main products i.e. oils were gasoline and diesel. The calorific value of gas has been found to be about 18,000kcal/$m^3$ which is similar to petroleum gas and shows that it could be used as a process fuel. Key technologies adopted in the process are 1) Recirculation of feed for rapid melting and enhancement of fluidity for automatic control of system, 2) Tubular reactor specially-designed for heavy heat flux and prevention of coking, 3)Recirculation of heavy fraction for prevention of wax formation, and 4) continuous removal & re-reaction of sludge for high yield of main product (oil) and minimization of residue. The advantages of the process are full automation, continuous operation, no requirement of catalyst, minimization of coking and sludge problems, maximizing the product(fuel oil) yield and purity, low initial investment and operation costs and environment- friendly process. In this presentation, background of pyrolysis technology development, the details of KIER pyrolysis process flow, key technologies and the performances of the process will be discussed in detail.

  • Organosolv ethanolamine pulping for oil palm empty fruit bunches(EFB) were evaluated in this study. The screen yield by the ethanolamine pulping were higher than that by the soda pulping at the same operation conditions. The higher concentration of ethanolamine solvent resulted in the higher yield and the lower contents of residual lignin. The EFB pulp fibers were the narrower in fiber width but the higher in coarseness than those of the hardwood pulp fiber, while the fiber length of the EFB pulp fiber were similar to that of the hardwood fiber. The intrinsic zero span tensile testing showed the EFB pulp fiber by the 80% ethanolamine pulping were the stronger than the fiber by the soda pulping. The results of this study supported that the ethanolamine pulping could be used as an alternative pulping method for the EFB.

  • An ethanol-producing yeast strain, CHFY0201, was isolated from soil in South Korea using an enrichment technique in a yeast peptone dextrose medium supplemented with 5% (w/v) ethanol at $30^{\circ}C$. The phenotypic and physiological characteristics, as well as molecular phylogenetic analysis based on the D1/D2 domains of the large subunit (26S) rDNA gene and the internally transcribed spacer (ITS) 1+2 regions, suggested that the CHFY0201 was a novel strain of Schizosaccharomyces pombe. During shaking flask cultivation, the highest ethanol productivity and theoretical yield of S. pombe CHFY0201 in YPD media containing 9.5% total sugars were $0.59{\pm}0.01$ g/l/h and $88.4{\pm}0.91%$, respectively. Simultaneous saccharification and fermentation for ethanol production was carried out using liquefied cassava (Manihot esculenta) powder in a 5-l lab-scale jar fermenter at $32^{\circ}C$ for 66 h with an agitation speed of 120 rpm. Under these conditions, S. pombe CHFY0201 yielded a final ethanol concentration of $72.1{\pm}0.27$ g/l and a theoretical yield of $82.7{\pm}1.52%$ at a maximum ethanol productivity of $1.16{\pm}0.07$ g/l/h. These results suggest that S. pombe CHFY0201 is a potential producer for industrial bioethanol production.

  • Thirty species of wild yeasts were ioslated and identified from two hundred strains collected from flowers by enrichment techniques using steptomycin. Among them, twnety three species could assimilate methanol and three species, Candida incommunis, cryptococcus aerius and Hansenula ciferrii which showed good biomass yield were selected. These three species assimilated methanol as carbon and energy source without mixture of vitamin and yeast extract. The species grown on methanol media were confirmed to have all essential amino acids in their cellular constituents. The content of total amino acids are as followings ; Candida incommunis : 42.5%, Hansenula ciferrii : 39.9%. Of the essential amino acids lysine and threonine which are usually lacking in grain protein were as much as flour's. The experiments on the growth conditions for the higher biomass yield showed the result that the optimum concentration of methanol ans temeprature wre defined as 1.3% and $30^{\circ}C$ in each species.

  • In this paper, we propose the Crop Classification Management System (CCMS) that detects changes in growth environment to improve crop production rate. The CCMS consists of two modules. First, the Crop Classification Module (CCM) classifies crops through CNN. Second, the Farm Anomaly Detection Module (FADM) detects abnormal crops by comparing accumulated data of farms. The CCM recognizes crops currently grown on farms and sends them to the FADM, and the FADM picks up the weather data from the past to the present day of the farm growing the crops and applies them to the Nelson rules. The FADM uses the Nelson rules to find out weather data that has occurred and adjust farm conditions through IoT devices. The performance analysis of CCMS showed that the CCM had a crop classification accuracy of about 90%, and the FADM improved the estimated yield by up to about 30%. In other words, managing farms through the CCMS can help increase the yield of smart farms.

  • Background: The use of herbal preparations as remedies for various medical conditions has continuously increased in Korea Large proportions of Korean patients use herbal medicinal products, folk remedies, and food supplements. However, studies on the safety of herbal products arc conducted on a less than sufficient basis even in the countries like Korea where herbal medicine is being used extensively. Some of the reports on the safety of herbs were done by the doctors of western medicine but lack of knowledge and misclassification led to misunderstandings. Objecitves: This study aims to review the recent evidences on hepatotoxic events associated with the use of herbal medicinal products, folk remedy, and food supplements. In the process, this review will grasp trends in this field of studies and will direct further researches into the right direction. Methods: Systematic literature searches were performed on MedRic and MEDLIS in Korea. Screening and selection of the articles and the extraction of data were performed independently by two of authors. There were no restrictions regarding the published date. In order to avoid bias, the articles written by medical doctors, not by oriental doctors were selected. 43 journals were chosen for the review. Results: Analyzing the number of journals, studies on the drug-induced liver injury were increased after the year 2000. The proportion of herbal and folk remedy associated hepatotoxic injuries in all drug-induced liver injury was $21.0\%-30.0\%$. But criterion for herbal medicine is rather vague and limited objective data hindered objectiveness. Few of single medicinal herbs and combination preparations were associated with hepatotoxic injuries. But because of lack of objectivity, further researches must be conducted to yield more concrete results. Conclusions: yield more concrete results. Incidence figures are largely unknown, and in most cases a causal attribution is not established. The challenge for the future is to systematically research this area, educate all parties involved, and minimize patient risks.
