A Fine-grained Localization Scheme Using A Mobile Beacon Node for Wireless Sensor Networks

  • In this paper, we present a fine-grained localization algorithm for wireless sensor networks using a mobile beacon node. The algorithm is based on distance measurement using RSSI. The beacon node is equipped with a GPS sender and RF (radio frequency) transmitter. Each stationary sensor node is equipped with a RF. The beacon node periodically broadcasts its location information, and stationary sensor nodes perceive their positions as beacon points. A sensor node's location is computed by measuring the distance to the beacon point using RSSI. Our proposed localization scheme is evaluated using OPNET 8.1 and compared with Ssu's and Yu's localization schemes. The results show that our localization scheme outperforms the other two schemes in terms of energy efficiency (overhead) and accuracy.

  • For improved localization around the indoor/outdoor transit area of buildings, this paper proposes an efficient algorithm combining the measurements from the WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) and the GPS (Global Positioning System) for. The proposed hybrid localization algorithm considers both multipath errors and NLOS (Non-Line-of-Sight) errors, which occur in most wireless localization systems. To detect and isolate multipath errors occurring in GPS measurements, the propose algorithm utilizes conventional multipath test statistics. To convert WLAN signal strength measurements to range estimates in the presence of NLOS errors, a simple and effective calibration algorithm is designed to compute conversion parameters. By selecting and combining the reliable GPS and WLAN measurements, the proposed hybrid localization algorithm provides more accurate location estimates. An experiment result demonstrates the performance of the proposed algorithm.

  • This article presents a field evaluation of an IP-based architecture for heterogeneous environments that has been developed under the aegis of the Moby Dick project, covering UMTS-like (universal mobile telecommunications system) TD-CDMA (time division-code division multiple access) wireless access technology, wireless and wired LANs. The architecture treats all transmission capabilities as basic physical and data-link layers, and replaces all higher-level tasks by IP-based strategies. The Moby Dick architecture incorporates mobile IPv6, fast handovers, AAA-control (authentication, authorisation, accounting), charging and quality of service (QoS) in an integrated framework. The architecture further allows for optimised control on the radio link layer resources. It has been implemented and tested by expert users, and evaluated by real users on field trials with multiple services available.

Rate Adaptation with Q-Learning in CSMA/CA Wireless Networks

  • In this study, we propose a reinforcement learning agent to control the data transmission rates of nodes in carrier sensing multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA)-based wireless networks. We design a reinforcement learning (RL) agent, based on Q-learning. The agent learns the environment using the timeout events of packets, which are locally available in data sending nodes. The agent selects actions to control the data transmission rates of nodes that adjust the modulation and coding scheme (MCS) levels of the data packets to utilize the available bandwidth in dynamically changing channel conditions effectively. We use the ns3-gym framework to simulate RL and investigate the effects of the parameters of Q-learning on the performance of the RL agent. The simulation results indicate that the proposed RL agent adequately adjusts the MCS levels according to the changes in the network, and achieves a high throughput comparable to those of the existing data transmission rate adaptation schemes such as Minstrel.

  • In this paper, conventional STM(Synchronous Transfer Mode) supports another traffics by using idle channels. Proposed mobile terminals are distributed independently at the BSA(Basic Service Area). So, MAC(Medium Access Control) specified on the wireless ATM networks, which is managing statistics multiplewing functions, idle channel's ultilization is maximized and multimedia service characteristic for conventional wired networks based fixed assignment scheme(connection-oriented) and random assignment scheme(connection-oriented) improving on dynamic reservation based MAC protocol.

  • 본 논문에서는 802.11을 기반으로 한 무선 링크에서 인터넷 상의 대표적인 전송계층 프로토콜인 TCP(Transmission Control Protocol)와 HDP(User Datagram Protocol)의 성능을 비교한다. 또한 이들 프로토콜이 무선 환경에서 보이는 문제점을 지적하고 원인을 분석한다. 무선 네트워크의 용량은 유선 네트워크와 다르며, 따라서 유선 네트워크 용량을 기반으로 설계된 TCP는 불안정하게 작동한다. 본 논문에서는 주목할만한 전송 프로토콜의 병목현상을 나타내는 원인으로 MAC(Medium Access Control)에 의해 채널을 잡기 위한 경쟁이 심각함과 전송 계층 프로토콜의 네트워크 용량 예측이 올바르지 않음을 지적하고, TCP와 HDP를 비교하여 무선 망에서도 네트워크 상황에 적응하는 기법이 중요함을 확인한다.

Rate Control for OFDM-based Wireless Networks (OFDM 기반 무선 네트워크의 전송률 제어 기법)

  • A protocol is proposed to control the rate of each subcarrier in OFDM-based wireless network systems. The proposed protocol adds an OFDM symbol in CTS frame defined in IEEE 802.11 standard. A receiver determines the rate of its subcarrier after it receives the RTS frame. The determined rate is added to OFDM symbol in CTS frame. In order to synchronize the rate information between the sender and the receiver, error recovery process is proposed. The performance improvement of the proposed method is shown by numerical results.

  • Traditionally SCADA is connected only in a limited private network. With new technology and facilities, there are also demands of connecting SCADA though the internet. The internet SCADA facility has brought a lot of advantages in terms of control, data viewing and generation. Aside from connecting SCADA to the internet, there are also operators who want to connect their system wirelessly. This can save budget for communication lines. Along with the advantages it brings, are security issues regarding wireless internet SCADA. In this paper, we discuss internet SCADA, its connection through wireless communication and the security issues surrounding it. To answer the security issues, a symmetric-key encryption for internet SCADA is proposed.

  • IEEE 802.15.4 specification which defines low-rate wireless personal area network(LR-WPAN) has application to home or building automation, remote control and sensing, intelligent management, environmental monitoring, and so on. Recently, it has been considered as an alternative technology to provide multimedia services such as automation via voice recognition, wireless headset and wireless camera for surveillance. In order to evaluate capability of voice traffic on the IEEE 802.15.4 LR-WPAN, we supposed two scenarios, voice traffic only and coexistence of voice and sensing traffic. For both cases we examined delay and packet loss rate in case of with and without acknowledgement, and various beacon period varying with beacon and superframe order values. In LR-WPAN with voice devices only, total 5 voice devices could be applicable and in the other case, i.e., coexisted cases of voice and sensor devices, a voice device was able to coexist with about 60 sensor devices.
