  • For the bio-fuel conversion of algae, several processes are needed including cultivating, agglomeration, extracting and conversion to the bio-fuel. The production cost for each process makes the total production cost of algae bio-fuel conversion. The production cost of algae bio-fuel has still higher than that of the other commercial bio-fuel. The reduction of production cost for each process enables the competitive price as a bio-fuel. It is difficult to separate the algae from water because of the similar magnitude of density each other. The agglomeration and extracting of algae using ultrasonic wave is rare effect of environmental hazard and also it is appropriate technology for the next generation energy resources. The present research is investigated for the elucidation of algae behavior in the water with the ultrasonics wave. For this purpose, the unsteady computational fluid dynamic analysis has been conducted in the ultrasonic pressure field. The velocity, pressure and algae concentration changes with time have been analysed to clarify the mechanism of algae separation by ultrasonic wave.

  • Impact Echo method has been successful in detecting a variety of defects in concrete structure. This study has the objectives to show important aspects of applying the Discrete Wavelet Transform(DWT) to signal processing of Modified Impact Echo(ModIE) Measurement systems and to the understanding of the seismic wave propagation. The data of ModIE were processed by DWT and compared with the results of conventional ModIE Analysis. Although it is inconsistent in the evaluated thickness of concrete lining, the DWT provides the features of separation, synthesis and de-noising in the original signal. The application of technique by wavelet was explained numerically with ABAQUS and performed experimentally with a real scale model in this work. Further works on the possible ways for creating new mother wavelet are specially needed for the enhancement of seismic signal analysis.

  • The V2F turbulence model, which has shown very good performance in several test cases at low speeds, has been applied to supersonic ramp flow with 20. corner angle at the free stream Mach number of 2.79. The flow is known to manifest strong shock wave/turbulent boundary layer interactions. As a comparative study, low-Reynolds k-ε models are also considered. While the V2F model predicts wall-pressure distribution well, it relatively predicts larger separation bubble and higher skin-friction after the reattachment than the experimental data. Although the ellpticity of f equation is the characteristics of incompressible flows, the converged solutions are acquired in the compressible flow with shock waves. The effect of the realizability constraints used in the model is also examined. In contrast to the result of impinging jet flows, the realizability bounds proposed by Durbin deterioate the overall solutions of the supersonic ramp flow.

  • Purpose of the present study is to develop a computational design program for shape optimization, combining the numerical optimization technique with the flow analysis code. The present methodology is then validated in three cases of aerodynamic shape optimization. In the numerical optimization, a feasible direction optimization algorithm and shape functions are considered. In the flow analysis, the Navier-Stokes equations are discretized by a cell-centered finite volume method, and Roe's flux difference splitting TVD scheme and ADI method are used. The developed design code is applied to a transonic channel flow over a bump, and an external flow over a NACA0012 airfoil to minimize the wave drag induced by shock waves. Also a separated subsonic flow over a NACA0024 airfoil is considered to determine a maximum allowable thickness of the airfoil without separation.

  • The sensor configuration of the magnetostrictive guided wave system can be described as a single continuous transducing element which makes it difficult to separate the individual modes from the reflected signal. In this work we develop the mode decomposition technique employing chirplet transform, which is able to separate the individual modes from dispersive and multimodal waveform measured with the magnetostrictive sensor, and to estimate the time-frequency centers and individual energies of the reflection, which would be used to locate and characterize defects. The reflection coefficients are calculated using the modal energies of the separated mode. Results from experimental results on a carbon steel pipe are presented, which show that the accurate and quantitative defect characterization could become enabled using the proposed technique.

  • The implementation of chirplet transform to locate axially aligned defects in pipes has been investigated. The results are obtained from experiments performed on a carbon steel pipe using magnetostrictive sensors. Chirplet transform is applied to the reflected signal to separate the individual modes from dispersive and multimodal waveform. The separated modes are used to calculate reflection coefficients which would be used to characterize defects. It is found that the reflection from a defect consists of the wave pulses with gradually decaying amplitudes. Also the results show that the reflection coefficient initially increases with the crack length but finally reaches an oscillating regime.

  • The effects of nonequilibrium condensation on the shock boundary layer interaction over a transonic bump model were investigated experimentally and numerically. An experiment was conducted using a supersonic indraft wind tunnel. A droplet growth equation was incorporated into two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation systems. Computations were carried out using a third-order MUSCL type TVD finite-difference scheme with a second-order fractional time step. Computation compared with the experimental results. Nonequilibirum condensation suppressed the boundary layer separation and the pressure fluctuations due to the shock boundary layer interaction. Especially the nonequilbrium condensation was helpful to suppress the high frequency components of the pressure fluctuations.

  • With the convention CW Doppler velocity meter, bi-directional velocities cannot be separated. The new CW Doppler system usee quadrature detection and phase rotation to Produce simultaneous independent audio and velocity signals for forward and reverse blood flow direction, is fabricated. Specially, this system shows that phase rotation method for flow direction separation provides easy and satisfactory feature. From in vivo blood flow measurement, can easily differentiate typical artery flow from vein flow. and measure both velocity characteristics qualitatively.

  • A high-Power continuous-wave (CW) ten-vane double-strapped magnetron oscillator has been investigated using three-dimensional (3D) particle-in-cell (PIC) numerical simulation code, MAGIC3D. The resonant modes and their resonant frequencies of the ten-vane strapped magnetron resonator were obtained to show a large mode separation near the ${\pi}$-mode. An electron cloud formed in an anode-cathode gap, called an interaction space was confined well enough to result in no leakage current. Five spokes were clearly observed in the electron cloud, which definitely ensured the ${\pi}$-mode oscillation in the ten-vane magnetron. Numerical simulations predicted that the saturated microwave output power measured at the coaxial output port was 5.41 kW at the microwave frequency of 893 MHz, corresponding to a power conversion efficiency of 72.6% when the external axial magnetic field was 1150 gauss and the electron beam voltage and current were 6 kV and 1.25 A, respectively.
