  • We propose a correction method of nonlinear frequency sweep in an FMCW(Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave) laser range finder. FMCW laser range finder requires linear frequency sweep for high resolution, and nonlinear frequency sweep makes the system performance degrade. In general, VCO(Voltage Controlled Oscillator) which is a component used for frequency modulation in FMCW method has nonlinear property. To correct the nonlinear frequency sweep, we utilize an auxiliary delay structure for generating trigger signal of ADC(Analog to Digital Converter). Because the trigger signal has same rate of change with the beat signal, the nonlinearity of the beat signal can be corrected. the experimental results show that the proposed method effectively eliminates the nonlinear frequency sweep problem and enhances the system performance.

  • In this paper, a novel UWB(Ultra Wide-band) antenna with suppressed band of IEEE 802.11a($5.15{\sim}5.825\;GHz$) WLAN was designed and fabricated by using SRR(Split Ring Resonator) with band rejection property. MWS(Micro-wave Studio) of CST company was utilized in the design stage. The antenna was fabricated on a substrate, Rogers 4003, with the thickness of 0.8 mm and relative permittivity of 3.38. The measured result shows that the proposed antenna has a good return loss below -10 dB and group delay below 1nsec over UWB communication band($3.1{\sim}10.6\;GHz$) except WLAN band. It also shows the omni-directional radiation pattern.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of tsunami which occurred in coastal area of the East Sea in Korea, the function of coastal forest for the reduction of tsunami's speed and energy, and the non-structural measures through the research data of tsunami in Japan. The results showed that tsunami which occurred in the East Sea in 1983 and 1993 reached coastal area of Korea one hour and fifty minutes later from Japan, and caused a loss of lives and property and flooding damage. If 60 m width of coastal forest was formed, the speed was decreased by 30%, the energy by 10%. Therefore, the width of coastal forest must be at least 60 m, of which the stand structure is the multiple-layered forest of mixed-forest, and the wave preventing measures have to be constructed together. In addition, non-structural measures as tsunami warning and survival strategies must be prepared.

  • EMAT has been applied in various fields for flaw detection and material characterization because it has noncontact property in wave generation and a good mode selectivity. Unfortunately, however, EMAT shows low signal to noise ratio relative to commercial contact transducer because of low energy conversion efficiency. If the phase matching through the control of time delay between each coil consisting of the array EMAT is accomplished, it is expected that it will be a solution for the improvement of low signal to noise ratio. In this experiment, the phased array EMATs which consists of 3 or 4 meander coils and one big magnet were fabricated for surface and vertical shear wave generation. Effect of phased delay control on signal directivity and amplitude enhancement was verified. A slit with the depth of 0.5 mm and a side-drill hole of 0.5 mm diameter were clearly detected by fabricated phased array EMATs, respectively.

  • An improved method of moments using a hybrid Galerkin-interpolation technique for numerical analysis of electromagnetic wave scattering in the 3-dimensional space is presented in this paper. Basically, the EFIE(electric field integral equation) and RWG(Rao-Wilton-Glisson) basis function are used to compute a property of electromagnetic wave scattering. We propose a hybrid technique combining the existing Galerkin's method with the interpolation method to improve the efficiency of the numerical computation. Then, an index of relative distance of each cells was defined to distinguish the relatively far elements, which interpolation method can be applied. To verify the performance of the proposed technique, the analytical Mie-series solution was used to compute the theoretical RCS of a conducting sphere for the purpose of comparison. We also applied this hybrid technique to various scatterers such as trihedral/omni-directional corner-reflectors to analyze the radar backscattering properties.

  • This paper investigates effects of rubber inclusion on the strength and physical characteristics of rubber.added composite geomaterial (CGM) in which dredged soils, crumb rubber, and bottom ash are reused for recycling. Several series of test specimens were prepared at 5 different percentages of rubber content (i.e. 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% by weight of the dry dredged soil) and three different percentages of bottom ash content (i.e. 0%, 50% and 100% by weight of the dry dredged soil). The mixed soil specimens were subjected to unconfined compression test and elastic wave test to investigate their unconfined compressive strengths and small strain properties. The values of bulk unit weight of the CGM with bottom ash content of 0% and 100% decrease from 14kN/$m^3$ to 11kN/$m^3$ and 15kN/$m^3$ to 12kN/$m^3$, respectively, as rubber content increases, because the rubber had a specific gravity of 1.13. The test results indicated that the rubber content and bottom ash content were found to influence the strength and stress-strain behavior of CGM. Overall, the unconfined compressive strength, and shear modulus were found to decrease with increasing rubber content. Among the samples tested in this study, those with a lower rubber content exhibited sand-like behavior and a higher shear modulus. Samples with a higher rubber content exhibited rubber-like behavior and a lower shear modulus. The CGM with 100% bottom ash could be used as alternative backfill material better than CGM with 0% bottom ash. The results of elastic wave tests indicate that the higher rubber content, the lower shear modulus (G).

  • Ship damage caused by maritime casualties leads to marine pollution and loss of life and property. To prevent serious damage from maritime casualties, several types of safety regulations are applied in ship design. Damage stability regulation is one of the most important safety issues. Designs of ships for long international voyages must comply with these regulations. Current regulations, however, do not consider the characteristics of the operating route of each ship and reflect only ship size and type of cargo. In this paper, a damage safety assessment was undertaken for a ship carrying radioactive waste in actual wave conditions. Damage cases for safety assessment were constructed on the basis of safety regulations and related research results. Hull form, internal arrangement, loading condition and damage condition were modeled for damage safety simulation. The safety simulation was performed and analyzed for 10 damage cases with various wave heights, frequency and angle of attack on an operating route. Based on evaluation results, a design alternative was generated, and it was also simulated. These results confirmed that damage safety analysis is highly important in the design stage in consideration of the operating route characteristics by simulation. Thus a ship designer can improve safety from damage in this manner.

  • Seismic refraction and electrical resistivity surveys were conducted in Bangeosan Maaebul site located in Haman, Kyungnam, in order to present geophysical safety analysis method for masonry cultural properties. Seismic refraction exploration revealed that the ground was composed of three layers in term of seismic wave velocity; the upper, medium, and lower layers. The low velocity ranging from 308 to 366 m/sec in upper layer suggests weathered soil, the intermediate velocity from 1906 to 2090 m/sec in the medium layer indicates weathered rocks, and the high velocity from 5061 to 5650 m/sec in the lower layer implies extremely hard rocks. Our seismic result suggests that the upper and medium layer around the Maaebul should be reinforced to support the construct. The result of electric resistivity survey shows that there exists a low resistivity zone, ranging from 131 to 226 Ohm-m, at the right side of the Maaebul with the direction of NE-NNE. This area is the weakness zone as it plays role of the underground water passage in rainy season.

  • Targeted introduction of explosion-resisting and energy-absorbing materials and optimization of explosion-resisting composite structural styles in underground engineering are the most important measures for modern engineering protection. They could also improve the survivability of underground engineering in wartime. In order to test explosion-resisting and energy-absorbing effects of high-performance equal-sized-aggregate (HPESA) concrete, the explosive loading tests were conducted on HPESA concrete composite plates by field simple explosion craters. Time-history curves of the explosion pressure at the interfaces were obtained under six conditions with different explosion ranges and different thicknesses of the HPESA concrete plate. Test results show that under the same explosion range, composite plate structures with different thicknesses of the HPESA concrete plate differ significantly in terms of the wave-absorbing ability. Under the three thicknesses in the tests, the wave-absorbing ability is enhanced with the growing thickness and the maximum pressure attenuation index reaches 83.4%. The energy attenuation coefficient of the HPESA concrete plate under different conditions was regressively fitted. The natural logarithm relations between the interlayer plate thickness and the energy attenuation coefficient under the two explosion ranges were attained.
