The Agricultural Policy/Environmental eXtender (APEX) models have been developed for assessing agricultural management efforts and their effects on soil and water at the field scale as well as more complex multi-subarea landscapes, whole farms, and watersheds. National Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Wanju, Korea, has modified a key component of APEX application, named APEX-Paddy for simulating water quality with considering appropriate paddy management practices, such as puddling and flood irrigation management. Calibration and validation are an anticipated step before any model application. Simple techniques are essential to assess whether or not a parameter should be adjusted for calibration. However, very few study has been done to evaluate the ability of APEX-Paddy to simulate the impact of multiple management scenarios on nutrients loss. In this study, the observation data from experimental fields at Iksan in South Kora was used in calibration and evaluation process during 2013-2015. The APEX auto- calibration tool (APEX-CUTE) was used for model calibration and sensitivity analysis. Four quantitative statistics, the coefficient of determination ($R^2$),Nash-Sutcliffe(NSE),percentbias(PBIAS)androotmeansquareerror(RMSE)were used in model evaluation. In this study, the hydrological process of the modified model, APEX-Paddy, is being calibrated and tested in predicting runoff discharge rate and nutrient yield. Field-scale calibration and validation processes are described with an emphasis on essential calibration parameters and direction regarding logical sequences of calibration steps. This study helps to understand the calibration and validation way is further provided for applications of APEX-Paddy at the field scales.
A study on water-based epoxy coated on mild steel using the electroplating method was conducted to optimize the process parameters for dry film thickness to achieve superior paint quality at optimal cost in an automotive plant. The regression model was used to adjust various parameters such as electrode voltage, bath temperature, processing time, non-volatile matter, and surface area to optimize the dry film thickness. The average dry film thickness computed using the model was in the range of 15 - 35 ㎛. The error in the computed dry film thickness with reference to the experimentally measured dry film thickness value was - 0.5809%, which was well within the acceptable limits of all paint shop standards. Our study showed that the dry film thickness on mild steel was more sensitive to electrode voltage and bath temperature than processing time. Further, the presence of non-volatile matter was found to have the maximum impact on dry film thickness.
The effect of selecting hydrologic item for calculating objective function on calibration of stream flow was evaluated by Hydrologic Simulation Porgram-Fortran (HSPF) linked with Model Independent Parameter Optimizer (PEST). Daily and monthly stream flow and flow duration were used to calculate objective function. Automated calibration focused on monthly stream was proper to analyze seasonal or yearly water budget but not proper to predict daily stream flow or percent chance flow exceeded. Calibration result focused on flow duration is proper to predict precent chance flow exceeded but not proper to analyze water budget or predict peak flow. These results indicate that hydrologic item calculated for objective function on calibration procedure could influence calibration results and watershed modeler should select carefully hydrologic item for the purpose of model application. Current, the criteria of stream flow of Korean TMDL is generated based on percent chance flow exceeded, so flow duration should be included to calculate objective function on calibration procedure for the estimation of criteria of stream flow using hydrologic model.
A mathematical model comprised with eight simultaneous quasi-linear partial differential equations was suggested to provide optimal chlorination strategy. Upstream weighted finite element method was employed to construct multidimensional numerical code. The code was verified against measured concentrations in three type of reactors. Boundary conditions and reaction rate were calibrated for the sixteen cases of experimental results to regenerate the measured values. Eight reaction rate coefficients were estimated from the modeling result. The reaction rate coefficients were expressed in terms of pH and temperature. Automatic optimal algorithm was invented to estimate the reaction rate coefficients by minimizing the sum of squares of the numerical errors and combined with the model. In order to minimize the concentration of chlorine and pollutants at the final usage sites, a real-time predictive control system is imperative which can predict the water quality variables from the chlorine disinfection process at the water purification plant to the customer by means of a model and operate the disinfection process according to the influent water quality. This model can be used to build such a system in water treatment plants.
The Keum river is one of the important river in Korea and has a drainage area of 9,873$\textrm{km}^2$. The Keum river is deepening pollution state due to development of the lower city and construction of a industrial complex. The water quality of the Keum river come to eutrophication state and belong to III grade of water quality standard. The concentration BOD in river is affected by the organic loading from a tributary and the algae biomass that largely happen to under eutrophication state. In the eutrophic water mass such as the Keum river, the autochthonous BOD was very important part for making a decision of water quality management, because it was accounted for majority of the total BOD. The purpose of this study was to survey the chatacteristics of water quality in summer and to estimate reaction coefficient. Also, we studied to correlationship between chlorophyll a and BOD(COD) for estimation of the autochthonous BOD. The correlationship between chlorophyll a and BOD(COD) were obtained through the culture experiment of phytoplankton in the laboratory. The results of this study may be summarized as follows ; The characteristics of water quality in summer were belong to III~IV grade of water quality standard as BOD and nutritive condition is very high. The BOD, ammonia nitrogen and phosphate loadings in Miho stream which inflowing untreated sewage from Chungju city was occupied with 64.07%, 26.36%, 46.08%, respectively. Maximum nutrient uptake (Vmax) was 0.4400$\mu$M/hr as substrate of ammonia nitrogen, 0.1652$\mu$M/hr as substrate of phosphate. Maximum specific growth rate ($\mu$max) was 1.2525$hr^{-1}$ as substrate of ammonia nitrogen, 1.5177$hr^{-1}$ as substrate of phosphate. The correlation coefficient between chlorophyll a and BOD by the culture experiment were found to be 0.911~0.935 and 0.942~0.947 in the case adding nutrient and no adding nutrient, respectively. The correlation coefficient between chlorophyll a and COD through the culture experiment were found to be 0.918~0.977 and 0.880~0.931 in the case adding nutrient and no adding nutrient, respectively. The autochthonous BOD(COD) was estimated to the relationship between BOD(COD) and chlorophyll a. The regression equation were found to be autochthonous BOD=(0.045~0.073)${\times}chlorophyll$ a and autochthonous $COD=(0.137~0.182){\times}chlorophyll$ a.
There has been continuous efforts to manage the water resources for the required water quality criterion at river channel in Korea. However, we could not obtain the partial improvement only for the point source pollutant such as, wastewater from urban and industrial site through the water quality management. Therefore, it is strongly needed that the Best Management Practice(BMP) throughout the river basin for water quality management including non-point source pollutant loads. This problem should be resolved by recognizing the non-point source pollutant loads from upstream river basin to the outlet depends on the land use and soil type characteristic of the river basin using the computer simulation by distributed parameter model based on the detailed investigation and the application of Geographic Information System(GIS). Used in this study, Annualized Agricultural Non-Point Source Pollution (AnnAGNPS) model is a tool suitable for long term evaluation of the effects of BMPs and can be used for un gauged watershed simulation of runoff and sediment yield. Now applications of model are in progress. So we just describe the limited result. However If well have done modeling and have investigated of propriety of model, well achieve our final goal of this study.

The purpose of this study is to estimate overall reliability and applicability of the watershed modeling for systematic management of point and non-point sources via water quality analysis and prediction of runoff discharge within watershed. Recently, runoff characteristics and pollutant characteristics have been changing in watershed by anomaly climate and urbanization. In this study, the effects of watershed scale were analyzed in runoff and water quality modeling using HSPF. In case of correlation coefficient, its range was from 0.936 to 0.984 in case A(divided - 2 small watersheds). On the other hand, its range was form 0.840 to 0.899 in case B(united - 1 watershed). In case of Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient, its range was from 0.718 to 0.966 in case A. On the other hand, its range was from 0.441 to 0.683 in case B. As a result, it was judged that case A was more accurate than case B. Therefore, runoff and water quality modeling in minimum watershed scale that was provided data for calibration and verification was judged to be favorable in accuracy. If optimal watershed dividing and parameter optimization using PEST in HSPF with more reliable measured data are carried out, more accurate runoff and water quality modeling will be performed.
Monitoring river microplastics is a challenging task since it is a time-consuming and high-cost process. The use of a physical model to have a better understanding of river microplastics' behaviors can complement the challenging monitoring process. However, there have been very limited studies on modeling river microplastics. In this study, therefore, we evaluated the applicability of one commonly used river water quality model, i.e., the Water Quality Analysis Simulation Program (WASP), in simulating the microplastic concentration in the river environment. We simulated the microplastic concentration in the Anyangcheon stream using the WASP's biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and suspended solid (SS) variables as possible surrogate variables for the microplastics. Simulation analyses indicate that the SS state variable performs better than the BOD state variable to mimic the observed concentrations of microplastics. This is because of the characteristics of each water quality parameter; the BOD variable, a biochemical indicator, is inappropriate for modeling the behaviors of microplastics, which have generally constant biochemical features. In contrast, the SS variable, which has similar physical behaviors, followed the observed patterns of the microplastic concentrations well. To build a more advanced and accurate model for simulating the microplastic concentration, comprehensive and long-term monitoring studies of the river microplastics under different environmental conditions are needed, and the unit of microplastic concentration should be carefully addressed before its modeling application.

Riverbank filtration is a natural process, using alluvial aquifers to remove contaminants and pathogens in river water for the production of drinking water. In Korea, most of the drinking water is supplied by surface water in-take. However, maintaining the quality of the drinking water becomes more and more difficult due to the increase of contamination. In riverbank filtration, the understanding of contaminant transport is an important task for the production of high quality drinking water and for the maintenance of facilities. In this paper, the transport behavior of hydrophobic organic contaminants is investigated when contaminants coexist with dissolved organic matter (DOM) and bacteria. In the developed model, the aquifer is thought of as a four phase system: two mobile colloidal phases, an aqueous phase, and a stationary solid matrix phase. The model equations are solved numerically for various situations. Results indicate that the presence of colloidal matters can enhance the mobility of contaminant significantly and that partitioning coefficients play an important role in the process.
Phosphorus cycle was studied in a deep stratified reservoir in summer monsoon area (Lake Soyang, Korea) by surveying phosphorus input from the watershed and the movement of phosphorus within the reservoir. And the spatial and temporal distribution of phosphorus was modeled with a 2-dimensional water quality model (CE-QUAL-W2), Phosphorus loading was calculated by measuring TP in the main inflowing river (the Soyang River) accounting for 90% of watershed discharge. TP of the Soyang River showed a large daily variation with the flow rate. High phosphorus loading occurred during a few episodic storm runoff laden with suspended sediments and phosphorus. Because storm runoff water on rainy days have lower temperature, it plunges into a depth of same temperature (usually below 20m depth), forming an intermediate turbidity layer with a thickness of 20 ${\sim}$ 30 m. Because of stable thermal stratification in summer the intermediate layer water of high phosphorus content was discharged from the dam through a mid-depth outlet without diffusing into epilimnion. The movement of runoff water within the reservoir, and the subsequent distribution of phosphorus were well simulated by the water quality model showing a good accuracy. The major parameter for the calibration of phosphorus cycle was a settling velocity of detritus, which was calibrated to be 0.75 m ${\cdot}$$day^{-1}$. It is concluded that the model can be a good simulator of limnological phenomena in reservoirs of summer monsoon area.
