This study investigated the efficacy of macelignan and hot water with Chinese traditional herb (CTH) extract on altering severe diabetic conditions in C57BL/KsJ-db/db mice. Previously, the anti-diabetic effects of macelignan were partly reported as a PPAR $\alpha/\gamma$-dual agonist. Here, we futher studied whether a combination of macelignan and CTH had more beneficial effects or not. The macelignan and CTH compound significantly decreased fasting blood glucose and HbA1c compared to macelignan-treated mice, and also significantly improved postprandial glucose, insulin sensitivity, and plasma lipid profiles (FFA, and TG). On the other hand, insulin levels were not significantly changed compared to the diabetic control group. There were no significant changes in the concentrations of total cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol, but there were changes in HTR and AI. These results suggest that the macelignan and CTH compound ameliorates hyperglycemia and efficiently improves postprandial glucose, insulin sensitivity, and hyperlipidemia compared with macelignan in db/db mice. Moreover, the macelignan and CTH compound seems to be more potent in affecting diabetic complications than macelignan.
This study investigated the effects of freeze-dried sweet pumpkin powder on the baking of bread. Freeze-dried sweet pumpkin powder (0, 3, 6, 9, or 12%) was supplemented during the baking process and the bread volume, weight, specific volume, baking loss rate, texture, and sensory characteristics were measured. The results were following. Freeze-dried sweet pumpkin contained 4.88% water, 4.40% protein, and 4.02% ash. The L-values (brightness) of the bread were significantly lower as increasing amounts of sweet pumpkin powder were added (p<0.001). However, higher values for the a-value (redness) and b-value (yellowness) were observed (p<0.01 for both values). The volume and baking loss rate decreased when the sweet pumpkin powder was added. In contrast, the weight significantly increased as sweet pumpkin powder was added (p<0.01) and the intensity of dark brown color increased. The outer side of the bread was balanced overall, but the outer skin of the bread appeared darker as the amount of sweet pumpkin powder increased. The overall acceptability, hardness (p<0.001), elasticity (p<0.01), cohesiveness (p<0.01), gumminess (p<0.01), and brittleness (p<0.001) increased as sweet pumpkin powder increased as well. However, when sweet pumpkin powder was added at 12%, the overall acceptability value was fairly low. Sensory parameters, such as taste (p<0.001), color (p<0.001), and flavor (p<0.05) were observed when sweet pumpkin powder was used at 3% and these results were lower than the control. Overall acceptability (p<0.001) was best when sweet pumpkin powder was used at 9% and the texture was best when sweet pumpkin powder was used at 6%.
This study was undertaken to investigate the influence of prostaglandin $E_1(PGE_1)$ upon the activity of carbonic anhydrase and upon the inhibitory action of acetazolamide on carbonic anhydrase. The heparinized blood was sampled by cardiac puncture from Sprague-Dawley strain rats under ether anesthesia and was hemolysed by adding distilled water 1,000 times the amount of the blood. The activity of carbonic anhydrase of 0.1 ml of the hemolysate was measured by Maren's simplified micro-method. In the first experiment, the 7 rats were used, and the activity was measured by adding 0.1 ml of various concentrations of $PGE_1$(0.5, 1.25, 2.5, 5.0, 10 and $20\;{\mu}g/ml$). In the second experiment, the 6 rats were used and the activity was measured by adding 0.1 ml of $PGE_1(5\;{\mu}g/ml)$ and 0.1 ml of acetazolamide$(6{\times}10^{-7}M/l)$ respectively or simultaneously. Obtained results were as follows: 1) The activity of carbonic anhydrase was significantly inhibited by $PGE_1$ at doses of $0.5{\sim}10\;{\mu}g/ml$, maximally at a dose of $2.5\;{\mu}g/ml$, but inhibition was no more observed at a dose of $20\;{\mu}g/ml$. 2) The activity of the acetazolamide group was significantly less than that of the control group. 3) The activity of the $PGE_1+acetazolamide$ group was significantly less than those of the $PGE_1$ group and the acetazolamide group. It is inferred from the above results that the $PGE_1$ inhibits the activity of carbonic anhydrase dose-dependently and strengthens the inhibitory effect of acetazolamide on carbonic anhydrase.
Adsorption of metal elements onto illite and halloysite was investigated at $25^{\circ}C$ using pollutant water collected from the gold-bearing metal mine. Incipient solution of pH 3.19 was reacted with clay minerals as a function of time: 10 minute, 30 minute, 1 hour, 12 hour, 24 hour, 1 day, 2 day, 1 week, and 2 week. Twenty-seven cations and six anions from solutions were analyzed by AAs (atomic absorption spectrometer), ICP(induced-coupled plasma), and IC (ion chromatography). Speciation and saturation index of solutions were calculated by WATEQ4F and MINTEQA2 codes, indicating that most of metal ions exist as free ions and that there is little difference in chemical species and relative abundances between initial solution and reacted solutions. The adsorption results showed that the adsorption extent of elements varies depending on mineral types and reaction time. As for illite, adsorption after 1 hour-reaction occurs in the order of As>Pb>Ge>Li>Co, Pb, Cr, Ba>Cs for trace elements and Fe>K>Na>Mn>Al>Ca>Si for major elements, respectively. As for halloysite, adsorption after 1 hour-reaction occurs in the order of Cu>Pb>Li>Ge>Cr>Zn>As>Ba>Ti>Cd>Co for trace elements and Fe>K>Mn>Ca>Al>Na>Si for major elements, respectively. After 2 week-reaction, the adsorption occurs in the order of Cu>As>Zn>Li>Ge>Co>Ti>Ba>Ni>Pb>Cr>Cd>Se for trace elements and Fe>K>Mn>Al, Mg>Ca>Na, Si for major elements, respectively. No significant adsorption as well as selectivity was found for anions. Although halloysite has a 1:1 layer structure, its capacity of adsorption is greater than that of illite with 2:1 structure, probably due to its peculiar mineralogical characteristics. According to FTIR (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy) results, there was no shift in the OH-stretching bond for illite, but the ν1 bond at 3695 cm-1 for halloysite was found to be stronger. In the viewpoint of adsorption, illite is characterized by an inner-sphere complex, whereas halloysite by an outer-sphere complex, respectively. Initial ion activity and dissociation constant of metal elements are regarded as the main factors that control the adsorption behaviors in a natural system containing multicomponents at the acidic condition.
The effects of variation in composition of the medium on the conversion of Gluconacetobacter hanseii PJK cells producing cellulose ($Cel^+$) to non-cellulose producing ($Cel^-$) mutants and the production of bacterial cellulose (BC) in an agitated culture were investigated. The impeller speed greater than 500 rpm was required to decrease the population of $Cel^-$ mutants to minimum in a basal medium containing $1.5\%$ ethanol because the optimum impeller speed to minimize the population of $Cel^-$ mutants increased with the concentration of ethanol added to a basal medium. Ethanol fed-batch culture could not increase the BC production in an agitated culture unlike that of a shaking culture. The amount of BC produced in a basal medium containing $1\%$ ethanol was $39\%$ more than that of the same medium with $0.27\%\;Na_{2}HPO_4$. Increase in the concentration of acetic acid in a basal medium decreased the BC production. The pH control of the culture broth increased the cell mass in the batch culture and improved the production yield of water-soluble polysaccharide (WSPS), but did not affect the production of BC.
Today, the importance of environmental education is a matter we are all concerned about. The environment surrounding us, such as the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the soil plants grow in, is critical for our survival. Currently there is a lot of interest in environmental education at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. This is a result of the deep recognition of the importance of the environment. However the environmental education being conducted in schools is not yet at a satisfactory level. The practical issues, including an entrance exam-oriented atmosphere, student' and parents' lack of understanding, and teachers' lack of expertise in environmental education, interfere with the stability of environmental curriculum in the schools. Accordingly, we need to devise an alternative environmental curriculum due to the fact that it hasn't been included as a regular subject in the curriculum of many national schools. This study, carried out from April to December 2009, was an examination of the effect of volunteer work at the place of ecology experience on the environmental sensitivity & state-trait anxiety of the 61 Gifted Students. The students were divided into two groups. The test group consisted of 30 gifted students who did volunteer work at the place of ecology experience run by Ulsan Science High School, in Ulsan Metropolitan City. The control group consisted of the rest of the students. The following are the study results: First, the volunteer work at the place of ecology experience was influential in increasing the environmental sensitivity of the gifted students. Second, the volunteer work at the place of ecology experience was influential in decreasing the state anxiety of in gifted students. Third, the volunteer work at the place of ecology experience was influential in decreasing the trait anxiety of in gifted students. Fourth, the volunteer work at the place of ecology experience positively influenced not only the gifted students' view of environmental education, but also their overall character.
This study was designed to identify how the incidence and severity of premenstrual. syndrome (PMS) correlate with the nutrient intakes and exercise habit of women. The subjects of this study were 299 women residing in Busan metropolitan city. Each subject was asked to complete a menstrual discomfort questionnaire (MDQ) for PMS and nutrient intakes. PMS symptom scores of women in their twenties ranked in order of severity were: behavioral change (2.45), followed by pain (2.36) and water retention (2.28), negative effects (2.20), autonomic reaction (1.91), arousal (1.87), decreased concentration (1.76) and decreased control (1.74). For Women in their thirties, the symptom of pain was the most dominant (2.93) followed by autonomic reaction (2.69) and behavioral change (2.54), and for those in their forties, negative effect (3.06) was highest, followed by pain (2.97) and autonomic reaction (2.86). The overall symptoms of PMS significantly increased with age (20': 2.07 points, 30': 2.34 points, 40': 2.47 points). There was no correlation of the BMI of the subjects with the symptoms of PMS, but there was a significant negative correlation between the symptoms of PMS and exercise frequency for women in their thirties and forties. Subjects in their twenties exhibited a significant negative correlation for PMS symptoms with the intake of carbohydrate (p < 0.05), calcium (p < 0.05) and vitamin E (p < 0.05). For subjects in their thirties, PMS symptoms were negatively correlated with the intake of calcium (p < 0.05) and vitamin C (p < 0.05); and in women in their forties, calcium (p < 0.01) and carbohydrate (p < 0.05) intakes were negatively correlated with PMS symptoms. This suggests that PMS represents the clinical manifestation of a nutrient deficiency state, especially calcium. Therefore, we concluded that nutrient supplementation and exercise management are likely to be of benefit in relieving PMS symptoms.

The radical scavenging activity of ethanol, acetone and distilled water extracts of broccoli including leaf, flower, flower plus stem, stem, peel and positive control vitamin C, respectively, were investigated. Each sample under assay condition exhibited free radical scavenging activity (FRSA) toward DPPH radical. Among five samples, S (stem) extracts, F (flower) extracts and L (leaf) extracts of broccoli showed the FRSA in the dot-blot assay. Strong FRSA potential of the ethanol extracts of broccoli revealed at pH $2\~6$ of acid regions and at $60\~80^{\circ}C$. The extracts of green tea and Artermisia were found to have effect against Staphylococcus aureus. Whereas, only the aqueous extracts of broccoli F and FS (flower-stem) of the five extracts marked strong antibacterial activity against Bacillus amyloliquefaciens in high temperature.

This study was done to investigate effects of ${\gamma}$ irradiated beef feeding on the formation of gluta thione S transferase placental form positive(GST P+) foci, lipid peroxidation, cytochrome P450 system and microsomal glucose 6 phosphate activity in diethylnitrosamine(DEN) initiated rat hepatocarci nogenesis. Weaning Sprague Dawley male rats were fed the diet containing ${\gamma}$ irradiatied ground beef at the dose of 0, 3, 5kGy as a 20% of protein source for 8 weeks. One week after feeding, rats were intraperitoneally injected twice with a dose of DEN(50mg/kg BW). As a promoter, 0.05% phenobarbital was fed in drinking water from one week after DEN treatment until the end of experiment. At the end of 8th week, rats were sacrificed and hepatic GST P+ foci, microsomal malondialdehyde(MDA) and conjugated diene contents were determined. In addition, cytochrome P450 content and the activities of NADPH cytochrome P450 reductase and glucose 6 phosphatase were also measured. There was no significant effect by gamma irradiation on microsomal MDA content, conjugated diene, cytochrome P450 content and activities of NADPH cytochrome P450 reductase and glucose 6 phosphatase. However with DEN treatment, microsomal MDA content and conjugated diene contents were significantly changed. Cytochrome P450 content was also significantly increased while microsomal glucose 6 phophatase activity was significantly decreased with DEN treatment. However activity of NADPH cytochrome P450 reductase was not affected. An interesting finding in this study was that the number and area of hepatic GST P+ foci of the rats fed gamma irradiated beef were significantly(p<0.05) lower than those of the control. Such a lowering effect on GST P+ foci formation was highest at the dose of 3kGy than others. Overall results suggest that the consumption of low dose of gamma irradiated beef does not affect the formation of lipid peroxide, cytochrome P450 system and membrane stability.

There is no specific code and/or standard described in the specifications to check verticality for Pre-tensioned Spun High Strength Concrete pile installation process. The most commonly used method for the vertical PHC pile installation is a naked-eye measurement or water level measurement conducted by assistant crew in the construction sites. The main objective of the research is to develop the automated vertical controllable prototype equipment for PHC piles in order to achieve uniform construction qualify as well as improving safety and productivity. The paper explains the literature review on PHC pile and pile installation process, development of prototype, field test of the prototype and its performance evaluation in terms of quality and safety as well as productivity. The results of the research will lead the further researches on the automated pile installation system.
