  • A major problem of nuclear energy is the production of radioactive wastes. Needs for more environmentally favorable method to decontaminate radioactive contaminants make the use of liquid/Supercritical $CO_2$ as a solvent medium. In removing radioactive metallic contaminants under $CO_2$ solvent, two methods - use of chelating ligands and that of water in $CO_2$ emulsion - are possible. In the chelating ligand method, a combination of ligands that can make synergistic effects seems important. We discuss about the properties of microemulsion formed by F-AOT. By adding acid in water core, decontamination of metallic parts, soils were possible.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the extraction of chromium(Vl) ion in waste water through the liquid surfactant membrane with open-type Perforated Reciprocating-Plate Column. Extraction experiments were conducted to measure the effect of flow characteristics of continuous and dispersed phase and stroke velocity, sodium hydroxide concentraction in internal aqueous phase, sulfuric acid concentraction in outer phase, and residence time distribution and measured extraction velocity. The result of experiments showed that extraction velocity of chromium ion was maximum when stroke velocity was 180 1/min and dispersion phase velocity was 30m11min, continuous phase velocity was 20m1/min. Extraction velocity of chromium ion increased with increasing difference of hydrogen ion concentraction of dispersion and continuous phase and column stage decreased.

  • Large amounts of liquid radioactive waste or radioactive contaminated water could be produced during the treatment of radiation accidents or during the dismantling and decontamination process of nuclear power plants. Since most of the decontamination agents to date are difficult to recover after adsorption of radioactive isotopes, their use in open environments such as rivers, reservoirs, or oceans is limited. In this study, as a radioactive decontamination agent that can overcome the current limitations when used in an open environment, a paramagnetic core inorganic composite (PMCIC) decomposite agent with high selectivity to cesium ions was developed. PMCore was prepared by synthesizing paramagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles, and inorganic crystals such as metal-ferrocyanide were conjugated to the surface so that PMCore could be selective to cesium ions. The developed PMCIC could be easily recovered from the water by magnetism and could adsorb up to 94 μM of Cs atoms per 1 g of PMCIC.

  • This study examined the characteristics of the waste catalyst used in the petroleum refinery operations. The total pore volume, specific surface area, and average pore size of the spent catalyst used in the petroleum refinery operations were 3.96cc/g, 13.81m2/g, and 1.15A, respectively. The weight loss observed in the range from $25^{\circ}C-700^{\circ}C$ for the spent catalysts using TG and DTA was approximately 23 wt. %. EDS analysis of the waste catalyst sample showed that the five major components were vanadium, nickel, manganese, iron, and copper. The extraction system is attractive for liquid-liquid extraction. In this study, Cynex 272 was used to extract vanadium from waste catalyst. The electrochemical characteristics of the extracted vanadium solution were measured by cyclic voltammetry (CV). As a result, an oxidation / reduction peak appeared, indicating the potential of an electrolytic solution.

  • For the probiotic feed production from residual food waste, aerobic liquid fermentation was conducted by thermophilic bacteria. 11 Strains of bacteria were isolated from several soil sources and residual food waste. Screening was carried by shaking incubator for the separation of thermophilic strain at $55^{\circ}C$. The isolated strains were tested for enzyme activities such as ${\alpha}$-amylase and protease. 6 Bacterial strains were chosen and were adapted by repeated fermentation processes in food waste substrate. The viable cell count of them at final fermentation stages were shown as $3-7{\times}10^9/ml$ in 2L-jar fermenter. Among them B3, B6 showed higher enzyme activity. By the mixed fermentation of B3, B6 and Bacillus stearothermophilus, the highest viable cell count reached to $1.4{\times}10^{10}/ml$ in 8 hours.

  • Solid and liquid phase peroxidases were extracted from Chinese cabbage roots by using commercial juicer in order to use peroxidases from agricultural waste for industrial applications. Since peroxidases are distributed into 66% in liquid (juice) and 34% in solid phase (pulp), enzymes from both phases were applied to investigate the enzymatic removal of phenol from waste water. After contacting 150 ppm Phenol solution with liquid phase enzyme (1,800 unit/$\ell$) for 3 hours in a batch stirred reactor, 96% of phenol could be removed through polymerization and precipitation. Also, phenol could be removed from initial 120ppm to 5ppm by applying solid phase enzyme in an air lift reactor ($600 unit/\ell$). Almost equivalent efficiencies of phenol removal were observed between two systems, even though only one third of the enzymes in batch stirred reactor was applied in airlift reactor. The possible reason for this phenomenon is because peroxidases exist as immobilized forms in solid phase.

  • This study provides an assessment on a proposed method for separation of cesium, strontium, and barium using electrochemical reduction at a liquid bismuth cathode in LiCl-KCl eutectic salt, investigated via cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (SEM-EDS). CV studies were performed at temperatures of 723-823 K and concentrations of the target species up to 4.0wt%. Redox reactions occurring during potential sweeps were observed. Concentration of BaCl2 in the salt did not seem to influence the diffusivity in the studied concentration range up to 4.0wt%. The presence of strontium in the system affected the redox reaction of lithium; however, there were no distinguishable redox peaks that could be measured. Impedance spectra obtained from EIS methods were used to calculate the exchange current densities of the electroactive active redox couple at the bismuth cathode. Results show the rate-controlling step in deposition to be the mass transport of Cs+ ions from the bulk salt to the cathode surface layer. Results from SEM-EDS suggest that Cs-Bi and Sr-Bi intermetallics from LiCl-KCl salt are not thermodynamically favorable.

  • In this study, candidate technologies for lithium recovery from the process waste liquid generated in the waste battery recycling process were reviewed, and technologies applicable to the process from the commercialization point of view were reviewed from a qualitative point of view. The evaporation method is difficult to apply because it requires a large-scale land and shows a low recovery rate due to the loss of Li during the concentration process. In the case of precipitation, a commercially available technology shows a high recovery rate due to the high Li/Na selectivity of phosphoric acid, but there are disadvantages in that the process is complicated due to the use of expensive phosphoric acid, requiring a recovery step, and continuous operation is impossible because solids are handled in the Li concentration process. In the case of solvent extraction, if we find an inexpensive extractant with high Li/Na selectivity, continuous operation is possible with the method used in extraction of other metals in the previous step, and when Li is concentrated, continuous operation is possible because it is in a liquid state. If it shows a similar recovery rate compared to precipitation technology, commercialization will be the most likely.
