Evaluation of Flow Experience by using Psychophysiological Visual Feedbacks

  • Objective: The present study aims to evaluate the visual reactions of users when they are playing games of different flow levels, and to explore the visual variables that can sensitively reflect the different flow levels. Background: The flow is defined as a psychological state where interface users feel their actions in a virtual setting identical to those in real environment. To measure the flow states of users, the questionnaire-based FSS(Flow State Scale) has mostly been used. However, this method is a qualitative test that has limits in terms of the accuracy of users' flow experiences. Therefore, more accurate methods to measure users' flow experiences are required. Method: Ten subjects participated in the experiment, where the independent variables were three games with different flow levels(puzzle games, dot drawing and coloring) and the time frame(the first and last 10 seconds in game playing), whereas the dependent variables included the pupil size and the frequency and duration of eye blinking. This study was a within-subject design. Each participant performed three types of games with different flow levels 3 times for each for 10 minutes, and their visual reactions to each game were measured. Results: The higher the flow cause the bigger pupil size(p<0.01) and the lower eye blinking frequency(p<0.1), indicating that different types of games lead to different flow levels. The pupil size during the last 10 seconds when the flow level was higher was bigger by 2.1% compared with that during the first 10 seconds in game playing(p<0.1), and the eye blinking frequency decreased by 12%(p<0.01). Conclusion: It was found out that the pupil size and the frequency and duration of eye blinking were psychophysiological indices for evaluating users' flow experiences, which could quantify the flow states users go through. The psychophysiological variables capable of measuring diverse aspects of the flow need diversifying to be applicable to precise measurement of the flow. Application: These studies are warranted for both quantitative analysis of flow levels and qualitative improvement of cyber leisure in line with development of healthy games.

  • We can anticipate that animations will form one of the axes and lead popular culture in our future visual age. Recently, research has been actively conducted, but it mainly focuses on their value in culture industry or technologies and methods of producing animations. Of course, research that deals with animation characters has constantly come out. This study focuses on the 'formative elements' of 3D animation characters and attempts differentiation from other research by inducing new logic theoretically. Being freed from the research on characters that has been merely focused on theoretical grounds, this study intends to figure out how audience that is consumers who actually get to watch and feel animations recognizes them and find out related problems and also solutions for them. In particular, this study intends to examine the formative characteristics of 3D animation characters with the characters appearing in , one of the animations that have achieved artistic value as well as commercial success. And for that, the study conducted not only literature review but various surveys and Delphi method as well. Also, the researcher devised an analysis frame to evaluate the formative elements through in-depth discussion with experts. And with this, the study created the forms such as the Elements of Form, Formation Methods of Form and Visual Recognition Elements of Form, examined how audience recognized 3D characters. The process of recognizing an image is influenced by socio-cultural environment or sex, age, and the level of knowledge differently. This was meant to investigate current visual culture and the public's perspective through characters in that represent the visual mode.

Analysis of Spatial Resolution Characteristics for DMC/UlatraCamXp/ADS80 Digital Aerial Image Based on Visual Method (시각적 기법에 의한 DMC/UlatraCamXp/ADS80 디지털 항공영상의 공간해상도 특성 분석)

  • Digital aerial images have been commonly used in a large scale map production owing to their excellent geometry, and high spatial and radiometric resolution in recent years. However, a quality verification process for acquired images should be preceded in order to secure the high precision and reliability of produced results. Several experimental studies to verify digital imaging systems have been vigorously researched by constructing permanent test field in abroad. On the other hand, it is urgently necessary to suggest a practical scheme for an image quality verification, because this related study and experiment are still in its early stage at home. Hence, this study aims to present an easy method to measure the spatial resolution of the image in a visual way using a portable Siemens star. The images used in the study were obtained with three different cameras, two frame array sensors of DMC, UltraCamXp and a linear array sensor of ADS80. The Siemens star target appeared in every image is extracted and then the spatial resolution of image is compared with theoretical GSD(Ground Sample Distance) by a visual method. In addition, the change of spatial resolution depending on the location of the Siemens star from image center and flight direction and cross-flight direction is also compared and analyzed. As study results, while the theoretical GSDs of images taken with each camera are about 6~9cm, the visual resolutions are 1.2~1.3 times as great as the theoretical ones.

Damage assessment from curvature mode shape using unified particle swarm optimization

  • A two-step procedure to detect and quantify damages in structures from changes in curvature mode shapes is presented here. In the first step the maximum difference in curvature mode shapes of the undamaged and damaged structure are used for visual identification of the damaged internal-substructure. In the next step, the identified substructures are searched using unified particle swarm optimization technique for exact identification of damage location and amount. Efficiency of the developed procedure is demonstrated using beam like structures. This methodology may be extended for identifying damages in general frame structures.

  • In this paper, for natural facial synthesis, lip-synch algorithm based on key-frame method using RBF(radial bases function) is presented. For lips synthesizing, we make viseme range parameters from phoneme and its duration information that come out from the text-to-speech(TTS) system. And we extract viseme information from Av DB that coincides in each phoneme. We apply dominance function to reflect coarticulation phenomenon, and apply bilinear interpolation to reduce calculation time. At the next time lip-synch is performed by playing the synthesized images obtained by interpolation between each phonemes and the speech sound of TTS.

  • Frank Lloyd Wright and Mies van der Rohe are two of the most influential architects in modern architecture. In spite of the different values in their architectural lives, the design of high-rise building had been a continuous matter of primary concern for them. The purpose of this study is to compare the architectural characteristics of the two master architects in terms of building form, structure, function, and envelop skin. glass. Both of them shared with the principle of organic architecture even in the design of high-rise buildings. However, the specific approaches to realize it in high-rise buildings are significantly different. Although they emphasized the integration of building form and structure, Wright regarded the reinforced concrete structure as an organic form-giver, while Mies introduced the steel skeleton structure only as an efficient and flexible building frame. As primary finishing materials for high-rise buildings, glass was used for functional purpose by Wright, but for visual purpose by Mies.

  • Space is comprised by the movements of human beings, and draws a complex locus within it. That form seems to be complex of movement around in all directions of space axis, and be ever-changing process as time goes by. Although Human are able to move uninhibitedly, the movements are restricted to a narrow sphere during locomotion. However, the pattern of these movements delineates a certain frame within the space, and provides not only visual effects but also relevance tomovement itself. Also, critically dividing and organizing this sphere is what is realized into this tangible indoor space. This study recognized importance of human being as a core of making indoor space and brought out experimental approach on relationship human with space, and visually perceptual standpoint. And this presented the recent possibility of action and attitude though sight and walking by arranging space on the basis of modern artists' perception of human body.

  • Characteristics of the present world market include demanding and sophisticated customers, requirement of high quality and innovative products, greater product diversity, increasing labour and products costs, availability of diverse alternatives to the customers and smaller batch sizes to satisfy a variety of customer profiles. To fulfil these characteristics, manufacturing companies need to be flexible adaptable, proactive and able to produce variety of products in short time at low cost. The aim of the study is to develop a computer-aided design system for water-gate on AutoCAD R2000 system. The developed system has been written in AutoCAD and VisualLISP with a personal computer, and is composed four modules which are the gate-lifter input module, guide-frame input module, and upgrade module. Based on knowledge-based rules, the system is designed by considering several factors, such as width and height of a water-gate, material, object of product and maximum depth of water.

  • In this paper, we propose a video retrieval system to search logical structure and semantic contents of video data efficiently. The proposed system employs a layered modelling method that orBanifes video data in raw data layer, content layer and key frame layer. The layered modelling of the proposed system represents logical structures and semantic contents of video data in content layer. Also, the proposed system supports various types of searches such as text search, visual feature based similarity search, spatio-temporal relationship based similarity search and semantic contents search.

  • This paper presents a visualization application using 3D-graphics for effective maintenance of power equipments. The maintenance algorithm implemented in the application is based on Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM) and Reliability-Centered Maintenance (RCM). The main frame of the developed application was made up based on visual C++ (MFC). In order to develop the interactive 3D application, the WorldToolKit library based on Open GL was used. The developed application can help the power system operators to intuitively recognize the present state and maintenance information of the equipments.
