The instability analysis of submerged gas flow into liquid is studied, which assumes gas and liquid as viscous and irrotational. At low mass flow rate of gas, injected gas plume is collection of bubbles, and increase of gas flow rate makes plume as a jet. It is well known that the transition from bubbling to jetting occurs in the transonic region. But previous works neglect viscous effect of gas flow into liquid. This paper concerns about an application of viscous potential flow theory in cylindrical gas flow into liquid. The growth rate versus wave number and mach number is compared with various condition including inviscid and viscous flow.
In this article, one of the procedures to design viscous dampers proposed in literature is applied to 3D asymmetric-plan buildings, considering different distributions for the damping coefficients, which are assumed to be proportional to specific structural or response parameters. The main purpose was to investigate the effectiveness of different vertical and in-plan distributions of the damping coefficients of nonlinear viscous dampers for the seismic retrofit of existing buildings. For comparison purposes, all the distributions were applied utilizing both a simplified and an extended method for the 3D structures, where the simplified method takes into account only the translation in the seismic direction, and the extended method considers the translations along the two orthogonal directions together with the floor rotations. The proposed distributions were then applied to a typical case study involving an asymmetric-plan six-storey RC building. The effectiveness of the different distributions was examined through time-history analyses, assuming nonlinear behaviour for both the viscous dampers and the structural elements. The results of the nonlinear dynamic analyses were examined in terms of maximum and residual inter-storey drifts, peak floor accelerations and maximum damper forces.

A floating Oscillating Water Column (OWC) wave energy converter, a Backward Bent Duct Buoy (BBDB), was simulated using a state-of-the-art, two-dimensional, fully-nonlinear Numerical Wave Tank (NWT) technique. The hydrodynamic performance of the floating OWC device was evaluated in the time domain. The acceleration potential method, with a full-updated kernel matrix calculation associated with a mode decomposition scheme, was implemented to obtain accurate estimates of the hydrodynamic force and displacement of a freely floating BBDB. The developed NWT was based on the potential theory and the boundary element method with constant panels on the boundaries. The mixed Eulerian-Lagrangian (MEL) approach was employed to capture the nonlinear free surfaces inside the chamber that interacted with a pneumatic pressure, induced by the time-varying airflow velocity at the air duct. A special viscous damping was applied to the chamber free surface to represent the viscous energy loss due to the BBDB's shape and motions. The viscous damping coefficient was properly selected using a comparison of the experimental data. The calculated surface elevation, inside and outside the chamber, with a tuned viscous damping correlated reasonably well with the experimental data for various incident wave conditions. The conservation of the total wave energy in the computational domain was confirmed over the entire range of wave frequencies.

Silicate glasses with varying SiO2 and Na2O contents were prepared and their viscous flow property at the elevated temperature was studied. When the glass powders were packed and sintered at 550℃ to examine their feasibility as a low sintering temperature glass frit, contrary to expectations, glasses with lower SiO2 content than 60 mol% showed no vitrification after sintering. High temperature microscopy revealed the viscous flow change of the silicate glasses with varying temperature and duration time and also indicated that the viscous flow was limited at low SiO2 content. X-ray diffraction (XRD) on the sintered samples and Raman spectroscopy were carried out to shed light on the compositional dependency of viscous flow of silicate glasses.
Navier-Stokes simulation of the flow in a micro viscous pump is carried out. The micro viscous pump consists of a rotating circular rotor placed in a two dimensional channel. All simulation is carried out by using a finite volume approach, at the Reynolds number of 0.5, to study the performance of the micro viscous pump. Length of channel of the pump is varied to simulate the effects of the pumping load. Numerical solutions show that the net flow of the pump is realized by two counter rotating vortices formed on both sides of the rotor. The volume flow rate of the pump is decreased as length of the channel is increased, while the static pressure difference across the rotor is increased. The static pressure difference across the rotor is observed to be inversely proportional to the volume flow rate as inertia effects are negligibly small. The efficiency of the pump is found to reach a maximum when two counter rotating vortices on both sides of the rotor becomes to merge forming an outer enveloping vortex.

In this paper, roll damping coefficients for a non-conventional cross section, which is herein named as 'step' model, are investigated numerically and experimentally. Experiments are extensively carried out to estimate the roll damping coefficients. Numerical estimations are also made with the help of numerical codes. For convenience, the roll damping is divided into wave-making component and viscous component. The wave-making component is determined using a potential code and the viscous component using a viscous flow code, in which the fluid domain is taken as unbounded. In order to validate the present approach, a typical cross section with bilge is considered and our results are compared with published data. The comparison shows a good agreement qualitatively. For the step model, numerical results are compared well with experimental data besides some quantitative discrepancies at a certain range of frequency. It is thought that the discrepancy might be caused by the ignorance of the free surface in viscous computations. It is found in the case of the step model that not only the viscous component but also the wave component increases considerably compared to the section with bilge.
Generally, A Dynamic Absorber by using Active viscous Damping is highlighted for effective suspension system, such as improved ride comfort and handling in the market. Lately, this system based on the Sky-Hook damper theory is introduced by the name of "Active Dynamic Absorber" to us. This system has an excellent performance in contrast to Passive. An elastic-plastic-viscous constitutive model was proposed based on a simple formulation scheme. The anisotropic modified Cam-Clay model was extended for the general stress space for the plastic simulation. The generalized viscous theory was simplified and used for the viscous constitutive part. A damage law was incoporated into the proposed constitutive model. The mathematical formulation and development of the model were performed from the point of view that fewer parameters be better employed. The creep behaviors with or without creep rupture were predicted using the developed model for cohesive soils. The model predictions were favorably compared with the experimental results including the undrained creep rupture, which is an important observed phenomenon for cohesive soils. Despite the simplicity of the constitutive model, it performs well as long as the time to failure ratio of the creep rupture tests is within the same order of magnitude.

Nowadays, the viscous damper using high viscosity oil was much to be used for engine shafting system to reduce the excessive additional stress by torsional vibration. In general, it was assumed that the viscous damper could be modelled having only damping coefficient, that is to say, whose stiffness be ignored. But it is found that there exists a jump phenomenon, as a kind of non-linear vibration, in the actual engine shafting system with a damper of high viscosity. Therefore the damper ring and the casing are modelled as two mass elastic system with a complex viscosity. Also, to analyze a non-linear phenomenon, it is assumed that the viscous damper has a linear stiffness coefficient in proportion to the angular amplitude and a non-linear stiffness coefficient in proportion to cube of the angular amplitude. For the analysis, Quasi-Newton method with BFGS(Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno) formula is used. Both calculated and measured values are provided in this paper which confirm the possibility of applying non-linear theory to engine shafting system with viscous damper.

The torsional vibration of the propulsion shafting system equipped with viscous damper is investigated. The equivalent system is modeled by a two mass softening system with Duffing's oscillator and the vibratory motion is described by non-linear differential equations of second order. The damper casing is fixed at the front-end of crankshaft and the damper's inertia ring floats in viscous silicon fluid inside of the camper casing. The excitation frenquency is proportional to the rotational speed of engine. The steady state response of the equivalent system is analyzed by the computer and for this analyzing, the harmonic balance method is adopted as a non-linear vibration analysis technique. Frequency response curves are obtained for 1st order resonance only. Jump phenomena are explained. The discriminant for the solutions of the steady state response is derived. Both theoretical and measured results of the propulsion shafting system are compared with and evaluated. As a result of comparisions with both data, it was confirmed that Duffing's oscillator can be used in the modeling of the propulsion shafting system attached with viscous damper with non-linear stiffness.
