  • This paper investigates asimply supported orthotropic rectangular laminate with viscous interfaces subjected to bending. Additional mathematical difficulty is involved due to the presence of viscous interfaces because the behavior of the laminate depends on time. A step-by-step state-space approach is suggested, which is directly based on the threedimensional theory of elasticity. In particular, Taylor's expansion theorem is employed to model the variations of field variables with time. The proposed method is suitable for analyzing laminated plate of arbitrary thickness. Numerical calculations are performed and it is shown that the viscous interfaces have a significant fluence on the response.

  • This paper presents an experimental study on the effectiveness of viscous-damping walls in controlling the wind-induced vibrations of a building model. A simple four-story building model, square in plan, was constructed for wind tunnel study. In this paper the description of the model, its instrumentation, and the experimental set-up and methodology are reported. The effectiveness of viscous-damping walls in reducing vibrations was investigated for different fluid levels in the walls, and at varying wind speeds and attack angles. The results show that viscous-damping walls are highly effective in most cases.

  • This study evaluates the performance of a coil spring-viscous damper system for the vibration and seismic isolation of an Emergency Diesel Generator (EDG) by measuring its operational vibration and seismic responses. The vibration performance of a coil spring-viscous damper system was evaluated by the vibration measurements for an identical EDG set with different base systems - one with an anchor bolt system and the other with a coil spring-viscous damper system. The seismic performance of the coil spring-viscous damper system was evaluated by seismic tests with a scaled model of a base-isolated EDG on a shaking table. The effects of EDG base isolation on the fragility curve and core damage frequency in a nuclear power plant were also investigated through a case study.

  • A problem on the sloshing flow of highly-viscous fluid in a rectangular box was revisited by both of theoretical approach and experimental visualization method. Based on the theoretical prediction that a linear shape of free surface is prevailing in bulk zone, it has been studied an analogy between a near wall coating flow in sloshing problem and dip coating flow in Landau-Levich problem. Phenomenological observation confirms that, in the case of highly-viscous fluid, I.e., Re ≪ 1, viscous dominant near-wall flow in sloshing problem is identical to dip coating flow generated by drag-out of the plate being in both motion of vertical translation and horizontal rotation.

  • The effectiveness of fluid viscous dampers (FVDs) on dynamic response mitigation of coupled two adjacent structures was investigated, considering soil-structure interaction (SSI) effects under earthquake excitation. A numerical procedure was employed to evaluate system response. The finite elements were used for the numerical treatment of the adjacent buildings and soil region. Viscous boundary conditions were used as special non-reflecting boundaries on the edges of finite soil region. According to the results, the FVDs were found to be very effective for dynamic response mitigation of the adjacent buildings, even if considering the soil medium. The results showed that the most affecting parameter on the system response was found to be soil type. It was also concluded that when adjacent structures coupled by FVDs, the maximum values of the roof displacements, the base shear forces, and the base bending moments could decrease up to around 50%. Changing in lateral stiffness of the one building has minor effects on the effectiveness of viscous dampers.

  • The author has presented a new approach to design hydrofoil section shapes in consideration of viscous for marine propeller blades. In suction sides of propeller blades, the pressure distribution on hydrofoil sections in non-cavitating flow should be examined before the study of cavitation characteristics. Generally, the calculation results for hydrofoil conformal mapping method by which neglect viscous effects do not agree with experimental ones. Moreover, another papers reported that laminar separation bubble and transition played an important role on the cavitation inception. From these considerations, it is very important to study the viscous effects of the hydrofoil sections, especially the mechanism separation bubble and the apparent thickness of hydrofoil section. Therefore, the new design method of hydrofoil sections in consideration of viscous effects in comparison to the airfoil section should be studied. In designing the new hydrofoil section shapes, based on Eppler theory, the author tried to give the peak negative pressure in leading edge region for NACA airfoil in consideration of viscous effects without turbulent boundary layer separation as much as possible. The design method was verified from the fact that the boundary characteristics was improved and the lifts of new hydrofoils were slightly in creased in comparison to these of NACA 16-012 symmetrical, NACA 4412 non-symmetrical airfoils.

  • In this paper, the author investigate viscous effects on the characteristics of TP620 hydrofoil. The pressure distribution on the foil section in non-cavitating flow should be considered its characteristics of displacement thickness due to viscous effects. Theoretical potential theory, which neglects viscous effects do not agree with this analysis, especially at leading edge region of the foil. And, the efficiency of TP620 hydrofoil considering viscous effects is a little lower than that of the foil, which neglected viscous effects.

  • The dynamic performance of the wave energy converter (WEC) rotor with different geometric parameters such as depth of submergence and beak angle has been assessed by considering the linear potential flow theory using WAMIT solver and along with the computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The effect of viscous damping is incorporated by conducting numerical free decay test using CFD. The hydrodynamic coefficients obtained from the WAMIT, viscous damping from the CFD and estimated PTO damping are used to solve the equation of motion to obtain the final pitch response, mean optimal power and capture width. The viscous damping is almost 0.9 to 4.6 times when compared to the actual damping. It is observed that by neglecting the viscous damping the pitch response and power are overestimated when compared to the without viscous damping. The performance of the pitch WEC rotor in the Jeju western coast at the Chagwido is analyzed using Joint North Sea Wave Project (JONSWAP) spectrum and square-root of average extracted power is obtained. The performance of WEC rotor with depth of submergence 2.8 m and beak angle $60^{\circ}$ found to be good compared to the other rotors.

  • This paper proposes the method of exactly identifying both viscous and friction damping from free vibration response to SDOF structure. Both displacement and acceleration free vibration responses to SDOF system, in which both viscous and friction damping are considered as its damping mechanism, are discussed to verify the proposed method. The relationship for identifying both viscous and friction damping is derived from two consecutive amplitudes of displacement or acceleration peak response. The proposed method is verified through the numerical simulation for an assumed SDOF system consisting of mass, both viscous and friction damping and spring components.

  • Jangkimchi is a kind of Kimchi which is made with soy-sauce instead of salt. Occasionally, when sugar is added to Jangkimchi for condiment, the kimchi juice becomes viscous. In this study. the nature of the viscous material and the condition for producing viscous property in Kimchi juice were investigated. HPLC analysis showed that the viscous material in Jangkimchi is polysaccharide composed of glucose. Sucrose was more effective in forming viscous juice than glucose and the viscosity increased with the addition of sucrose up to 10%. Soy-sauce also played a role in increasing the viscosity of Kimchi juice compared with salt. Aerobic fermentation condition was found to be another factor to make the juice viscous. The population of Leuconostoc mesenteroides, well-known producer of viscous dextran was not different in the Kimchi juice prepared with the addition of sucrose from that without sucrose, which implys that the Jangkimchi preparation methods such as addition of sucrose and soy-sauce would do some effects on the production of viscous material in Jangkimchi.
