The effect of cutting off fibers on transient load in a polymeric matrix composite lamina was studied in this paper. The behavior of fibers was considered to be linear elastic and the matrix behavior was considered to be linear viscoelastic. To model the viscoelastic behavior of matrix, a three parameter solid model was employed. To conduct this research, finite difference method was used. The governing equations were obtained using Shear-lag theory and were solved using boundary and initial conditions before and after the development of break. Using finite difference method, the governing integro-differential equations were developed and normal stress in the fibers is obtained. Particular attention is paid the dynamic overshoot resulting when the fibers are suddenly broken. Results show that considering viscoelastic properties of matrix causes a decrease in dynamic load concentration factor and an increase in static load concentration factor. Also with increases the number of broken fibers, trend of increasing load concentration factor decreases gradually. Furthermore, the overshoot of load in fibers adjacent to the break in a polymeric matrix with high transient time is lower than a matrix with lower transient time, but the load concentration factor in the matrix with high transient time is lower.

In this paper, an efficient dynamic analysis method of a building structure with viscoelastic dampers is proposed. Viscoelastic dampers are used for the purpose of controlling vibration of buildings. The matrix condensation technlque based on the rigid diaphragm assumption is not readily applicable for building structures with viscoelastic dampers. An improved procedure for damping matrix condensation is employed in the proposed method to increase the efficiency of analysis. Efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method are verified through analysis of an example structure.
Polymer matrix composites are widely used in many engineering applications as they can be customized to meet a desired performance while not only maintaining low cost but also reducing weight. Polymers can experience viscoelastic-viscoplastic response when subjected to external loadings. Various reinforcements and fillers are added to polymers which bring out more complexity in analyzing the timedependent response. This study formulates an integrated micromechanical model and finite element (FE) analysis for predicting effective viscoelastic-viscoplastic response of polymer based hybrid composites. The studied hybrid system consists of unidirectional short-fiber reinforcements and a matrix system which is composed of solid spherical particle fillers dispersed in a homogeneous polymer constituent. The goal is to predict effective performance of hybrid systems having different compositions and properties of the fiber, particle, and matrix constituents. A combined Schapery's viscoelastic integral model and Valanis's endochronic viscoplastic model is used for the polymer constituent. The particle and fiber constituents are assumed linear elastic. A previously developed micromechanical model of particle reinforced composite is first used to obtain effective mechanical properties of the matrix systems. The effective properties of the matrix are then integrated to a unit-cell model of short-fiber reinforced composites, which is generated using the FE. The effective properties of the matrix are implemented using a user material subroutine in the FE framework. Limited experimental data and analytical solutions available in the literatures are used for comparisons.
This paper concerns the singular thermal stresses at the interface corner between the elastic fiber and the viscoelastic matrix of a two-dimensional unidirectional laminate model induced during cooling from cure temperature down to room temperature. Time-domain boundary element method is employed to investigate the nature of residual thermal stresses at the interface. Numerical results show that very large stress gradients are present at the interface corner and such stress singularity might lead to local yielding or fiber-matrix debonding.
Interfacial stress singularity in a unidirectional two-dimensional laminate model consisting of an elastic fiber and a viscoelastic matrix has been investigated using the time-domain boundary element method. First, the interfacial singular stresses between the fiber and the matrix of a unidirectional laminate subjected to a uniform transverse tensile strain have been investigated near the free surface, but without any defect or any edge crack. Such a stress singularity might lead to fiber-matrix debonding or interfacial edge cracks. Then, the overall stress intensity factor for the case of a small interfacial edge crack of length a has been computed.
In this work, the effect of glycidyl methacrylate grafted multi-walled carbon nanotubes (GMA-MWCNTs) on the viscoelastic behaviors of polypropylene (PP) based nanocomposites was studied. The GMA-MWCNTs/PP was prepared using a bravender at $200^{\circ}C$ by melt mixing as a function of GMA-MWCNT content. The viscoelastic behaviors of GMA-MWCNTs/PP nanocomposites were measured by a rheometer. It was found that the GMA-MWCNTs were homogeneously dispersed in the PP matrix. The GMA-MWCNTs/PP nanocomposites showed higher storage modulus, loss modulus, and shear viscosity compared to pure PP nanocomposites and the maximum value was shown at 2.0 wt% GMA-MWCNTs loading. These results were probably attributed to the strong interfacial interaction between the GMA-MWCNT and the PP matrix.

A new finite element formulation based on the relaxation type hereditary integral is presented for a time-domain analysis of isotropic, linear viscoelastic problems. The semi-discrete variational approximation and elastic-viscoelastic correspondence principle are used in the theoretical development of the proposed method. In a time-stepping procedure of final, linear algebraic system equations, only a small additional computation for past history is required since the equivalent stiffness matrix is constant. The viscoelasticity matrices are derived and the stress computation algorithm is given in matrix form. The effect of time increment and Gauss point numbers on the numerical accuracy is examined. Two dimensional numerical examples of plane strain and plane stress are solved and compared with the analytical solutions to demonstrate the versatility and accuracy of the present method.
The linear viscoelastic behavior of acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) polymers with different rubber content has been investigated in the frame of a linear viscoelastic model, which takes into account the inter-connectivity of the dispersed rubber particles. The model developed in our previous work has been shown to properly predict the low frequency plateau for the storage modulus, which is generally observed in polymer blends containing core-shell-type impact modifiers. In the present study, further experiments have been carried out on ABS polymers with different rubber content to verify the validity of our linear viscoelastic model. It has been found that our model describes quite properly the rheological behavior of ABS polymers with different rubber content, especially at low frequencies. The experimental data confirm that our model describes the rheological properties of rubber-modified thermoplastic polymers with strong adhesion at the particle/matrix interface more accurately than the Palierne model.

With growing interests in using bacterial biopolymers in geotechnical practices, identifying mechanical properties of soft gel-like biopolymers is important in predicting their efficacy in soil modification and treatment. As one of the promising candidates, dextran was found to be produced by Leuconostoc mesenteroides. The model bacteria utilize sucrose as working material and synthesize both soluble and insoluble dextran which forms a complex and inhomogeneous polymer network. However, the traditional rheometer has a limitation to capture in situ properties of inherently porous and inhomogeneous biopolymers. Therefore, we used the particle tracking microrheology to characterize the material properties of the dextran polymer. TEM images revealed a range of pore size mostly less than $20{\mu}m$, showing large pores > $2{\mu}m$ and small pores within the solid matrix whose sizes are less than $1{\mu}m$. Microrheology data showed two distinct regimes in the bacterial dextran, purely viscous pore region of soluble dextran and viscoelastic region of the solid part of insoluble dextran matrix. Diffusive beads represented the soluble dextran dissolved in an aqueous phase, of which viscosity was three times higher than the growth medium viscosity. The local properties of the insoluble dextran were extracted from the results of the minimally moving beads embedded in the dextran matrix or trapped in small pores. At high frequency (${\omega}>0.2Hz$), the insoluble dextran showed the elastic behavior with the storage modulus of ~0.1 Pa. As frequency decreased, the insoluble dextran matrix exhibited the viscoelastic behavior with the decreasing storage modulus in the range of ${\sim}0.1-10^{-3}Pa$ and the increasing loss modulus in the range of ${\sim}10^{-4}-1\;Pa$. The obtained results provide a compilation of frequency-dependent rheological or viscoelastic properties of soft gel-like porous biopolymers at the particular conditions where soil bacteria produce bacterial biopolymers in subsurface.
In this paper, a thermo-viscoelastic problem in an infinite isotropic medium in two dimensions in the presence of a point heat source is considered. The fundamental equations of the problems of generalized thermoelasticity including heat sources in a thermo-viscoelastic media have been derived in the form of a vector matrix differential equation in the Laplace-Fourier transform domain for a two dimensional problem. These equations have been solved by the eigenvalue approach. The results have been compared to those available in the existing literature. The graphs have been drawn for different cases.
