  • Researches on laboratory work show that students often achieve little meaningful learning through laboratory work. One reason for this failure is that students often do not know the different types of laboratory work and the 'purposes' of them. Therefore, this study investigated middle school student' ideas about the purposes of laboratory work. To seventh grade students(n=147) of middle school in Seoul, Korea, we asked (Question 1) "Why do scientists do laboratory work?" and (Question 2) "Why do you do laboratory work in science classes?" It was required a short essay including the reasons and examples of them. From the results, it was found that 56.8% of the students had ideas that scientists do laboratory work for discovering new facts or inventing something, and 82.9% of the students responded that they do laboratory work for understanding and memorizing the contents of science textbook. In addition, the differences according to gender and to school achievement level, and the relationship between the ideas about scientists' laboratory work and about school science laboratory work were examined. The results showed that boys responded 'social usefulness' more frequently than girl, while girls mentioned 'personal pleasure' more frequently than boys in relation to the purposes of scientists' laboratory work(p<.05). According to the achievement level, it was founded that 'middle' level students replied 'to remember' more frequently than high and low levels in relation to school science laboratory work. Finally, students who had ideas that scientists do laboratory work for verifying a theory had the similar ideas about school science laboratory work. In conclusion, students are lack of diverse and proper views about laboratory work. It is recommended that teacher need to make clear the purpose of laboratory work and help students to understand of it.

  • Human anatomy courses are one of the most fundamental subjects taught to students in any health-related science field. To improve the quality and to enlarge the scope of human anatomy courses, 130 students (Biomedical Laboratory Science, Physical Therapy, and Occupational Therapy) were given a questionnaire survey. The students were asked question regarding their anatomy course and cadaver dissection class. Specific questions regarding knowledge acquisition before and after the course was queried, in addition to their views on the necessity of cadaver dissection. The survey results indicated that students of all three departments were satisfied with the anatomy course, with no statistical difference in the students' sex or department affiliation. Although there was no difference between the three majors with respect to understanding the course materials, Biomedical Laboratory Science students showed higher satisfaction in this course (p<0.05). Most students, regardless of sex and high school education, stated that cadaver dissection is an important part of the anatomy course. In conclusion, anatomy courses should implement cadaver dissection and actual practice rather than textbook-related studies alone.

  • The purpose of this study is to try to structuralize the perception of the mothers of science-gifted elementary students using the concept mapping approach. The mothers who participated in this research had children who were 5th and 6th graders selected as science-gifted by a regional education office, a science high school and two national universities in a city. One of the authors interviewed 26 mothers, and extracted 50 general statements of their perceptions about the career path of their children. Ten mothers who participated in interviews sorted a shuffled pack of statement cards. The categorization of the statements into the dissimilarity matrix was carried out by SPSS multidimensional scaling analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis to generate a conceptual diagram. After that 140 mothers rated each statement using a Likert-type response scale from one to five. The result showed six clusters of parental views such as were 'Burden of private education, grades and going to the next grade,' 'Thinking about career guidance in gifted education and school,' 'Parental roles in child career education,' 'Difficulties in career guidance at home,' 'Demand for strengthening the parental capacity for career guidance,' and 'Demand for social support.' 'Demand for social support' obtained the highest sympathy from mothers of elementary science gifted.

  • Prospective high school students and science teachers' perceptions of 'advanced material', which was first introduced in the science textbooks of the 2009 revised curriculum, were surveyed. One thousand four hundred and ninety nine students and 123 teachers from Seoul, Incheon, and the Kyeonggi areas participated in this survey. The results are as follows. First, the attitude of students and teachers towards 'advanced material' was positive, but their interests in 'advanced material' was low. Also, some teachers mentioned that 'advanced material' was one of the difficult subjects to teach. Second, the perception of 'advanced material' was relatively low for both students and teachers. Both of them had heard of 'advanced material' through various routes, however not many of them thought that they knew what 'advanced material' was exactly. Also there were some teachers who didn't understand the detailed information of 'advanced material'. Third, both students and teachers agreed that 'advanced material' was worthwhile to learn and teach. However, each party had their own desire of 'what to learn', 'what to teach', 'how to learn' and 'how to teach'. Based on the results, some suggestions were made for effective teaching of this new subject.

  • There are conflicting views for the polymerization process of human UDP-glucose dehydrogenase (UGDH) and no clear evidence has been reported yet. Based on crystal coordinates for Streptococcus pyogenes UGDH, we made double mutant A222Q/S233G. The double mutagenesis had no effects on expression, stability, and secondary structure. Interestingly, A222Q/S233G was a dimeric form and showed an UGDH activity, although it showed increased $K_m$ values for substrates. These results suggest that Ala222 and Ser233 play an important role in maintaining the hexameric structure and the reduced binding affinities for substrates are attributable to its altered subunit communication although quaternary structure may not be critical for catalysis.

  • A three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction is an important research area in computer vision. The ability to detect and match features across multiple views of a scene is a critical initial step. The tracking matrix W obtained from a 3D reconstruction can be applied to structure from motion (SFM) algorithms for 3D modeling. We often fail to generate an acceptable number of features when processing face or medical images because such images typically contain large homogeneous regions with minimal variation in intensity. In this study, we seek to locate sufficient matching points not only in general images but also in face and medical images, where it is difficult to determine the feature points. The algorithm is implemented on an adaptive threshold value, a scale invariant feature transform (SIFT), affine SIFT, speeded up robust features (SURF), and affine SURF. By applying the algorithm to face and general images and studying the geometric errors, we can achieve quasi-dense matching points that satisfy well-functioning geometric constraints. We also demonstrate a 3D reconstruction with a respectable performance by applying a column space fitting algorithm, which is an SFM algorithm.

  • Recently, a number of researches actively focus on the contents and sensitivity of information distributed through SNS as smartphones and SNS gained its popularity. In this paper, we collected online news data about SW education, extracted words after morphological analysis, and analyzed emotions of collected news data by calculating sentimental score of each news datum. Also, the accuracy of the calculated sentimental score was examined. As a result, the number of news related to 'SW education' in the collection period was about 189 per month, and the average of sentimental score was 0.7, which signifies the news related to 'SW education' was emotionally positive. We were positive about the importance of SW education and the policy implementation, but there were negative views on the specific method for the realization. That is, a lack of SW education environment and its education method, a problem related to improvement of SW developers and improvement of their labor conditions, and increase of private education in coding were the factors for the negative viewers.
