  • When an integral pressurized water reactor is operated under low power conditions, once-through steam generator group operation strategy is applied. However, group operation strategy will cause nonuniform coolant flow distribution at the core inlet and lower plenum. To help coolant flow mix more uniformly, a flow mixing chamber (FMC) has been designed. In this paper, computational fluid dynamics methods have been used to investigate the coolant distribution by the effect of FMC. Velocity and temperature characteristics under different low power conditions and optimized FMC configuration have been analyzed. The results illustrate that the FMC can help improve the nonuniform coolant temperature distribution at the core inlet effectively; at the same time, the FMC will induce more resistance in the downcomer and lower plenum.

  • The characteristics of groundwater movement under the heavy rainfall at Nan-ji waste landfill site are studied using HELP(Hydraulic Evaluation of Landfill Performance) program, which calculates the daily leachate in the Nan-ji waste landfill site. In this study, instead of the average recharge value, which is used in the past study, the real reacharge value is used to calculate the daily leachater. It is found about 70 times greater than thor average recharge value under the condition of heavy rainfall in the rainy season. The flow characteristics of groundwater for water level fluctuation is simulated using the ground water flow model MODFLOW(A Modular 3-D Finite Different Groundwater Flow Model) program, and the slurry layer is newly added. The result of the study is different from that of the ordinary simulation, which shows much higher ground water level than from the ordinary simulation.

  • Peak load rate(i.e., maximum daily flow/average daily flow) has not been considered for industrial water demand planning in Korea to date, while area unit method based on average daily flow has been applied to decide capacity of industrial water treatment plants(WTPs). Designers of industrial WTPs has assumed that peak load would not exist if operation rate of factories in industrial sites were close to 100%. However, peak load rates were calculated as 1.10~2.53 based on daily water flow from 2009 to 2014 for 9 industrial WTPs which have been operated more than 9 years(9-38 years). Furthermore, average operation rates of 9 industrial WTPs was less than 70% which means current area unit method has tendency to overestimate water demand. Therefore, it is not reasonable to consider peak load for the calculation of water demand under current area unit method application to prevent overestimation. However, for the precise future industrial water demand calculation more precise data gathering for average daily flow and consideration of peak load rate are recommended.

  • To evaluate the change of the groundwater flow and the water table response resulting from urbanization, two cases of the transient three-dimensional numerical simulations were performed. Variations of the groundwater flow system caused by withdrawals were analyzed. Two cases of infiltration rates were applied in this study to verify the water table changes. One is the rate under the circumstance during 1994 and the other is the revised rate. The numerical results from this study indicated that groundwater flow was influenced by human impacts. Groundwater flow has been concentrated to Taegu Textile Complex area where had large amount of pumping. Water table so far decreased -2.76m a year due to withdrawals. Water tables of many points were increased more than 30cm when the surface was reformed by infiltrating the rainfall. It was appeared that the improvement of surface to recharge the precipitation was very important to preserve and manage for the groundwater.

  • The physical benchmark problem on the direct-contact condensation under the horizontal occurrent stratified flow was analyzed using the RELAP5/MOD2 and /MOD3 one-dimensional model. Analysis was peformed for the Northwestern experiments, which involved condensing steam/water flow in a rectangular channel. The study showed that the RELAP5 interfacial heat transfer model, under the horizontal stratified flow regime, predicted the condensation rate well though the interfacial heat transfer area was underpredicted. However, some discrepancies in water layer thickness and local heat transfer coefficient with experimental results were found especially when there is a wavy interface, and those were satisfied only within the range.

  • The experiment of thermal performance about cross flow type cooling tower was conducted in this study. Generally the ambient air condition can affect the thermal performance of cooling tower to improve or not. However it is hard to control the cooling water temperature that we want under bad air condition or during rainy season. In this paper, the effect of variables, which the ambient air have. especially wet-bulb temperature, are experimentally investigated for controlling the cooling water temperature more successfully. The result is that there is appropriate air flow rate in respective air condition to preserve the cooling performance in the cooling tower and the maximum air flow rate can't overcome the approach under bad air condition.

  • This study aims at investigating the in situ applying grass concrete system in river environments which widely used nowadays and reviewing the effect and flow resistance for grass concrete structure through the physical experiments by hydraulic model test and developing application method in river bed which has rigid flood resistance. Grass concrete structure has been independently tested under high velocity flow under the super critical condition, as well as sud critical flow measuring velocity and water surface elevation along the cross section. This results shows grass concrete system is also suited to use in aggressive river environments such as repairing a flood damaged embankment that had placed at risk the adjacent drainage channel with vegetation.

  • The operating temperature of Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) usually has to be limited under $100^{\circ}C$ to maintain the proper ionic conductivity. Therefore, the only product from reaction, water, is in the liquid phase. Two-phase flow makes the flow phenomenon in the channel difficult to understand and predict. Water blocking in the PEMFC channel or the pore of Gas Diffusion Layer (GDL), called flooding, is known as the main effect of PEMFC degradation. To analyze two-phase flow, the PEMFC with transparent acrylic plate was used. Two-phase flow patterns were observed by varying the current density. When the PEMFC is mounted horizontally, water in the cathode is mainly transported on the interface between the channel and GDL.
