A new family of structure-dependent integration methods is developed to enhance with desired numerical damping. This family method preserves the most important advantage of the structure-dependent integration method, which can integrate unconditional stability and explicit formulation together, and thus it is very computationally efficient. In addition, its numerical damping can be continuously controlled with a parameter. Consequently, it is best suited to solving an inertia-type problem, where the unimportant high frequency responses can be suppressed or even eliminated by the favorable numerical damping while the low frequency modes can be very accurately integrated.

In contrast to the well-developed convex splitting schemes for gradient flows of two-component system, there were few efforts on applying the convex splitting idea to gradient flows of multi-component system, such as the vector-valued Cahn-Hilliard (vCH) equation. In the case of the vCH equation, one need to consider not only the convex splitting idea but also a specific method to manage the partition of unity constraint to design an unconditionally energy stable scheme. In this paper, we propose a constrained Convex Splitting (cCS) scheme for the vCH equation, which is based on a convex splitting of the energy functional for the vCH equation under the constraint. We show analytically that the cCS scheme is mass conserving and unconditionally uniquely solvable. And it satisfies the constraint at the next time level for any time step thus is unconditionally energy stable. Numerical experiments are presented demonstrating the accuracy, energy stability, and efficiency of the proposed cCS scheme.
In this paper, the Gauge-Uzawa methods for the Darcy-Brinkman equations driven by temperature and salt concentration (DBTC) are proposed. The first order backward difference formula is adopted to approximate the time derivative term, and the linear term is treated implicitly, the nonlinear terms are treated semi-implicit. In each time step, the coupling elliptic problems of velocity, temperature and salt concentration are solved, and then the pressure is solved. The unconditional stability and error estimations of the first order semi-discrete scheme are derived, at the same time, the unconditional stability of the first order fully discrete scheme is obtained. Some numerical experiments verify the theoretical prediction and show the effectiveness of the proposed methods.
The recent spread of scaled telemanipulation into microsurgery and the nano-world increasingly requires the identification of the possible operation region as a main system specification. A teleoperation system is a complex cascaded system since the human operator, master, slave, and communication are involved bilaterally. Hence, a small time delay inside a master and slave system can be critical to the overall system stability even without communication time delay. In this paper we derive an upper bound of the scaling product of position and force by using Llewellyns unconditional stability. This bound can be used for checking the validity of the designed bilateral controller. Time delay from the sample and hold of computer control and its effects on stability of scaled teleoperation are modeled and simulated based on the transfer function of the teleoperation system. The feasible operation region in terms of position and force scaling decreases sharply as the sampling rate decreases and time delays inside the master and slave increase.
We present a finite difference method for solving the Ohta-Kawasaki model, representing a model of mesoscopic phase separation for the block copolymer. The numerical methods for solving the Ohta-Kawasaki model need to inherit the mass conservation and energy dissipation properties. We prove these characteristic properties and solvability and unconditionally gradient stability of the scheme by using Hessian matrices of a discrete functional. We present numerical results that validate the mass conservation, and energy dissipation, and unconditional stability of the method.
We present an analysis of microstrip coupled lines (MCLs) used to improve the stability of a 60 GHz narrowband amplifier. The circuit has a 4-stage structure implementing MCLs instead of metal-insulator-metal (MIM) capacitors for the unconditional stability of the amplifier and yield enhancement. The stability parameter, U, is used to compare the stability of MCLs with that of MIM capacitors. Experimental results show that MCLs are more stable than MIM capacitors with the same capacitances as MCLs because the parasitic parallel resistances of MCLs are lower than those of MIM capacitors. Moreover, the bandwidth of an amplifier using MCLs is narrower than one using MIM capacitors because the parasitic series inductances of MCLs are higher than those of MIM capacitors.
A novel family of controllable, dissipative structure-dependent integration methods is derived from an eigen-based theory, where the concept of the eigenmode can give a solid theoretical basis for the feasibility of this type of integration methods. In fact, the concepts of eigen-decomposition and modal superposition are involved in solving a multiple degree of freedom system. The total solution of a coupled equation of motion consists of each modal solution of the uncoupled equation of motion. Hence, an eigen-dependent integration method is proposed to solve each modal equation of motion and an approximate solution can be yielded via modal superposition with only the first few modes of interest for inertial problems. All the eigen-dependent integration methods combine to form a structure-dependent integration method. Some key assumptions and new techniques are combined to successfully develop this family of integration methods. In addition, this family of integration methods can be either explicitly or implicitly implemented. Except for stability property, both explicit and implicit implementations have almost the same numerical properties. An explicit implementation is more computationally efficient than for an implicit implementation since it can combine unconditional stability and explicit formulation simultaneously. As a result, an explicit implementation is preferred over an implicit implementation. This family of integration methods can have the same numerical properties as those of the WBZ-α method for linear elastic systems. Besides, its stability and accuracy performance for solving nonlinear systems is also almost the same as those of the WBZ-α method. It is evident from numerical experiments that an explicit implementation of this family of integration methods can save many computational efforts when compared to conventional implicit methods, such as the WBZ-α method.

Stability and accuracy for the trapezoidal rule of the Newmark time integration method are analyzed when variable time step sizes are adopted. A new analytic approach to stability and accuracy analysis is also proposed for time integration methods with variable time step sizes. The trapezoidal rule with variable time step sizes has the "actual" unconditional stability which is the same as that of the method with constant time step sizes. However, the method with variable time step sizes is first-order accurate while the method with constant time step sizes is second-order accurate. accurate.
In this paper, we analyze the efficiency of a domain decomposition method for the two-dimensional telegraph equations. We formulate the theoretical spectral radius of the iteration matrix generated by the domain decomposition method, because the rate of convergence of an iterative algorithm depends on the spectral radius of the iteration matrix. The theoretical spectral radius is confirmed by the experimental one using MATLAB. Speedup and operation ratio of the domain decomposition method are also compared as the two measurements of the efficiency of the method. Numerical results support the high efficiency of the domain decomposition method.

Direct velocity feedback (DVFB) control is known that it offers an unconditional stability with very high performance when the control strategy is applied at a point collocated sensor and actuator pair, because the sensor-actuator pair has strictly positive real (SPR) property. In this paper, two types of collocated sensor-actuator pairs are considered for practical active vibration control of a structure. They are a point collocated sensor-actuator pair and a point sensor-distributed actuator pair. Both pairs with DVFB sho robust stability and performance. It is noted that the collocated point sensor-actuator ultimately acts as a 'skyhook' damper, but the point sensor-distributed actuator pair with DVFB acts as a 'skyhook' rotational dmaper pair.ational dmaper pair.
