The rate constants for the nucleophilic addition of potassium cyanide to α,N-diphenylnitrone and its derivatives (p-OCH3, p-CH3, p-Cl, and p-NO2) were determined by ultraviolet spectrophotometer at 25℃, and the rate equations which can be applied over a wide pH range were obtained. On the basis of pH-rate profile, adduct analysis, general base catalysis and substituent effect, a plausible mechanism of this addition reaction was proposed: At high pH, the cyanide ion to carbon-nitrogen double bond was rate controlling, however, in acidic media, the reaction proceeded by the addition of hydrogen cyanide molecule to carbon-nitrogen double bond after protonation at oxygen of a,N-diphenylnitrone. In the range of neutral pH, these two reactions occured competitively.
The rate constants for the nucleophilic addition of thiophenol derivatives (p-OCH3, H, p-CH3, m-CH3, p-Br and p-NO2) to 4'-[N-(9-acridinyl)]-1'-(N-methanesulfonyl)-3'-methoxyquinonediimide (AMQD) were determined by ultraviolet spectrophotometer in water at 5 ℃, and rate equations which can be applied over a wide pH range were obtained. On the basis of pH-rate profile, Bronsted plot, adduct analysis, general base catalysis and substituent effect, a plausible mechanism of this addition reaction was proposed: Below pH 2.5, the reaction proceeded by the addition of thiophenol molecule to 6'-position of quinonoid after protonation at the acridinyl nitrogen. Above pH 6.2, the addition of sulfide anion to 6'-position of quinonoid was rate controlling. However, in the range of pH 3.0-6.0, these two reactions occured competively.
In this study, performance tests, a field evaluation, and a life cycle cost (LCC) analysis for high performance coating systems were conducted to prepare a plan to reduce the cost of maintenance coating and contribute to the service life extension of steel bridges by applying high performance coatings to steel bridges that will be constructed in the future. From the deterioration models based on the field evaluation for chlorinated rubber and urethane topcoat systems, which have been applied often, the mean service lives were derived as 20.8 and 26.6 years, respectively. For the other coating systems that have not been applied in practice, the coordination factors were differentially applied with evaluation items. The most durable coating system was predicted to be thermal spray coating (TSC) primer/epoxy intermediate coat/fluoride resin topcoat, with a predicted value as long as 42.2 years. The LCC analysis indicates that partial application of high performance coating, such as TSC and fluoride resin, to specific parts vulnerable to corrosion and ultraviolet ray (UV) is more advantageous than the use of general coating systems.
Purpose: Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) is rare autosomal recessive genetic disorder of DNA repair in which the ability to repair damage caused by ultraviolet light is deficient. We reported the first molecularly confirmed Korean patient of XP by targeted exome sequencing. The prevalence of XP included all subtype and carrier frequency of XP-A the using public data were estimated for the first time in South Korea. Materials and Methods: We described a 4-year-old Korean girl with clinical diagnosis of XP. We performed targeted exome sequencing in the patient for genetic confirmation considering disease genetic heterogeneity and for differential diagnosis. We verified a carrier frequency of c.390-1G>C in XPA gene known as mutational hot spot using Korean Reference Genome Data Base. We estimated the period prevalence of all subtypes of XP based on claims data of the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service in South Korea. Results: We identified homozygous splicing mutation of XPA (c.390-1G>C) in the patient. The carrier frequency of risk for XPA (c.390-1G>C) was relatively high 1.608 e-03 (allele count 2/1244). The prevalence of XP in South Korea was 0.3 per million people. Conclusion: We expect that c.390-1G>C is hot spot for the mutation of XPA and possible founder variant in South Korea. However, the prevalence in South Korea was extremely low compared with Western countries and Japan.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the transmittance differences of pressable ceramic core due to thickness within the visible light spectrum. Methods: 36 specimens were divided into 2 groups (0.6mm, 0.8mm) which have each 3 specimens. The size of specimens was 10mm high and 10mm wide. The transmittance of specimens are measured by spectrophotometer Model Cary 500 that can measure infrared-ray, visible wave and ultraviolet-ray. Results: The results shows that there was no significant difference between specimen's thickness(0.6mm, 0.8mm) and transmittance. Conclusion: The individual's color perception is personal and there are numerous factors that influence on it. In general, human eye can perceive the color of thing only within visible light spectrum but in this experiment through spectrophotometer there was no big difference between specimen's thickness(0.6mm, 0.8mm) and transmittance. To sum up, The most important factors were a layed porcelain structure and its thickness rather than core thickness in the porcelain crown. Also, When making all ceramic core with dead pulp (nervous treatment tooth) when used as a restorative esthetic think is more efficient to improve.
Availability of nutrients is known to influence marine primary production; and it is of general interest to see how nutrient limitation mediates phytoplankton responses to solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR, 280-400 nm). The red tide diatom Skeletonema costatum was cultured under nitrate (N)-limited and N-replete conditions and exposed to different solar irradiation treatments with or without UV-A (315-400 nm) and UV-B (280-315 nm) radiation. Its photochemical quantum yield decreased by 13.6% in N-limited cells as compared to that in N-replete ones under photosynthetically active radiation (PAR)-alone treatment, and the presence of UV-A or UV-B decreased the yield further by 2.8 and 3.1%, respectively. The non-photochemical quenching (NPQ), when the cells were exposed to stressful light condition, was higher in N-limited than in N-replete grown cells by 180% under PAR alone, by 204% under PAR + UV-A and by 76% under PAR + UV-A + UV-B treatments. Our results indicate that the N limitation exacerbates the UVR effects on the S. costatum photosynthetic performance and stimulate its NPQ.
Objectives: Unprotected leisure time exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun or artificial tanning beds is the most important environmental risk factor for melanoma, a malignant skin cancer with increasing incidences over the past decades. The aim of the present study was to assess the impact of skin health information provided by several sources and different publishing issues on knowledge, risk perception, and sun protective behavior of sunbathers. Methods: A cross-sectional questionnaire survey was conducted among Austrian residents (n=563) spending leisure time outdoors in August 2010. Results: Print media, television, and family were perceived as the most relevant sources of information on skin health, whereas the source physician was only ranked as fourth important source. Compared to other sources, information provided by doctors positively influenced participants' knowledge on skin risk and sun protective behavior resulting in higher scores in the knowledge test (p=0.009), higher risk perception (p<0.001), and more sun protection (p<0.001). Regarding gender differences, internet was more often used by males as health information source, whereas females were more familiar with printed information material in general. Conclusions: The results of this survey put emphasis on the demand for information provided by medical professionals in order to attain effective, long-lasting promotion of photoprotective habits.

PEP-1 peptide has been used for transduction of native protein into mammalian cells. This work describes the findings that the fusion of PEP-1 to target proteins led to protein truncation likely in a non-protein-specific manner. Approximately 75% of PEP-1-MsrA fusion protein was truncated in the N-terminal region of MsrA between Lys-27 and Val-28 during expression in Escherichia coli and purification. This large protein truncation was also observed in another PEP-1 fused protein, PEP-1-MsrB2, in the N-terminal region of MsrB2. The full-length PEP-1-MsrA protein was rapidly transduced into keratinocyte cells within 15 min. The transduced PEP-1-MsrA was functionally active and could protect skin cells against oxidative stress- and ultraviolet radiation-induced cell death. Collectively, our data demonstrated the protective roles of MsrA in skin cells and, moreover, may raise a concern of protein truncation caused by fusion of PEP-1 about the general use of this peptide for protein transduction.
The Kinetics of the addition of benzalacetophenone derivatives was investigated by ultraviolet spectrophotometery in 5% dioxane $H_2O$ at $50^{\circ}C$. A rate equation was obtained in wide range of pH. The substituent effects on benzalacetophenone derivatives were studied, and addition were facilitated by electron attracting groups. The final product was benzalacetophenone-${\beta}$-thioglycolic acid synthesized by the addition of thioglycolic acid to benzalacetophenone. On the base of the rate equation, substituent effect, general base effect and final product, the plausible addition mechanism was proposed: Below pH 9.0, only neutral thioglycolic acid molecule was added to the carbon-carbon double bond, and in the range of pH $9.0{\sim}11.0$, neutral thioglycolic acid molecule and thioglycolic acid anion competitively attacted the double bond. By contrast, above pH 11.0, the reaction was dependent upon only the addition of thioglycolic acid anion.
