The research was conducted to measure the effect of temperature on respiratory and quality characteristics of 'Tsugaru' apple(Malus domestica Borkh) during storage at 4$^{\circ}$C, 10$^{\circ}$C and 20$^{\circ}$C. Respiration rate of the apple just after harvest was 7.57 mL CO$_2$/kg/h at 20$^{\circ}$C. It was decreased rapidly and was 2.86 mL CO$_2$/kg/h after storage for 45 days at 20$^{\circ}$C. The apples showed the highest ethylene production rate at 10$^{\circ}$C and 20$^{\circ}$C after 14 days, and at 4$^{\circ}$C after 28 days during storage. Weight of the apple was reduced by 2.9% after 120 days at 4$^{\circ}$C and by 6.1% after 45 days at 20$^{\circ}$C. Color difference of peel and pH increased with the temperatures but titratable acidity and flesh firmness showed the reverse trends during storage. According to the subjective quality test, it could be suggested that the shelf-life of the apple is 86 days at 4$^{\circ}$C, 65 days at 10$^{\circ}$C and 37 days at 20$^{\circ}$C, respectively.
We examined the diffusion of contaminants released from the southern coast around Fukushima, Japan, during the passage of typhoons using a three-dimensional numerical model (POM) to track diffusing radioactivity (RA) released from the nuclear power plant at Fukushima following the accident caused by the giant tsunami event in March 2011. Radioactive contaminants released during the passage of typhoons may have significantly affected not only Japanese but also Korean coastal waters. The model domain covered most of the northwestern Pacific including marginal seas such as the East/Japan Sea and the Yellow Sea. Several numerical experiments were conducted case studies focusing on the westward diffusion from the southern coast of Japan of contaminants derived from the source site (Fukushima) according to various attributes of the typhoons, such as intensity, track, etc. The model produced the following results 1) significant amounts of contaminants were transported in a westward direction by easterly winds favorable for generating a coastal air stream along the southern Japanese coast, 2) the contaminants reached as far as Osaka Bay with the passage of typhoons, forced by a 5-day positive sinusoidal form with a (right-) northward track east of Fukushima, and 3) the range of contamination was significant, extending to the interior of the East/Japan Sea around the Tsugaru Strait. The model suggests that contaminants and/or radioactivity released from Fukushima with the passage of typhoons can affect Korean waters including the northeastern East/Japan Sea around the Tsugaru Strait, especially when the typhoon tracks are favorable for generating a westward coastal air stream along the southern Japanese coast.
This study was conducted to determine the influence of postharvest dipping treatment with aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG) on ethylene production and composition of non-cellulosic neutral sugars in cell walls of 'Tsugaru' apple fruits during storage. Fruits were harvested on August 20, soaked in AVG 50 and 75 $mg L^{-1}$ solution for 5 minutes, and stored in cold storage chamber at $0{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ for 60 days. Fruit quality factor, ethylene productions, and cell wall component changes were investigated at 20 days interval. As a result, the fruit firmness and acid content were much higher in AVG treated fruits than those of untreated one during 60 days of cold storage. Ethylene production of AVG treated fruits was reduced to the level of 1/10 compared with untreated one. As to the change of non-cellulosic neutral sugars in the cell walls of 'Tsu- garu' fruits, the major sugar was arabinose and galactose in water, CDTA and $Na_2CO_3$ soluble fractions. The content of arabinose and galactose in untreated fruits increased as the softening of fruits was in progress, but the fruits treated with AVG showed a little change during storage, so it is predicted that these two cell wall compositional sugars were not solubilized by the treatment of AVG. Accordingly, the marketability of 'Tsu- garu' fruits could remarkably increase when soaking the fruits in AVG solution after harvest.
The effect of air vent holes, stacking methods of boxes and clearance between boxes on static pressure drop, were measured to design of pressure cooling system. Static pressure drops in air vent hole of carton box were measured for different hole opening ratio from 1% to 5%. Static pressure drop was expressed as a function of superficial velocity as second-degree polynomial. At given static pressure in plenum chamber, static pressure drop in boxes was shown as second-degree polynomial of the number of carton box in series stacking method, as first-degree polynomial in height and parallel stacking method. In pressure cooling of 24 boxes of Tsugaru apple, air flow rates through clearance between the boxes were shown 1.27 and 1.65 times than those of through the inside of boxes at the plenum pressure of 10mmAq and 20mmAq, respectively.
The antioxidative activity and the polyphenolic composition were examined in four different cultivars of apple (Malus domestica), 'Fuji', 'Tsugaru', 'Hongro' and 'Kogetsu', and their parts (peel, core, pulp and juice). The total phenolics, flavonoids and anthocyanins differed among the tested cultivars and parts. Peel parts had the highest total phenolics and anthocyanin content. Contributions of those phenolics to total antioxidative activity were determined using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2'-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) radical scavenging assays, and the linoleic acid oxidation assay. Concentration of phenolics contributes significantly to the total antioxidative activity of apples. Clearly, apple peels, especially from Hongros and Kogetsus, possess high levels of phenolic compounds and antioxidants. Therefore, apple peels may potentially function as a value-added ingredient.
A simple analytic model for estimating the volume transport of the Tsushima Current is considered by assuming that the transports through the connecting channels, the Korea and Tsugaru Straits, are geostrophically controled. The model gives a much simpler form of solution than that by Minato and Kimura (1980). It depends no longer on the geometry of the marginal sea and on the thickness of western boundary layer relative to the dimension of the ocean, but considers the geometry of the connecting channels ignored by Nof (1993). The external parameters turn out to be the oceanic meridional sea level difference between the two channels, the depth of the channels and the meridional position of the marginal sea. For typical value of the depth ratio of the channels to the ocean, the model gives an estimate of the Tsushima Current transport of acceptable magnitude.

An ichthyofauna analysis of the East Sea using quantitative investigation procedures for latitudinal variations of the species richness and clustering of the species list is presented to illustrate the application of the adopted geographical scaling (less than 1:10,000,000) which provides a principal opportunity for common benthic and pelagic biogeographical zonation. The distribution of both pelagic and benthic marine fish biota at a scale of biosphere (or its major sections) was highly influenced by spatial nonuniformity of hydrological structure associated with the various water circulations and frontal zones. Following zoogeographical zonations were established for the East Sea: Osaka, East Korea, Primorye, North Primorye, Northern East Sea, Uetsu, Tsugaru, Soya and West Sakhalin.
