  • Objectives: The objective of this study is to analyze clinical reports of treatment of menopausal depression in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Methods: This study included randomized controlled trials (RCT) in treating menopausal depression. Literature studies of Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure Database(CNKI) were performed. Clinical reports on menopausal depression treatment were searched using the following key words in the CNKI: 'menopausal depression' and 'postmenopausal depression'. Results and Conclusions: A total of 24 RCT articles on menopausal depression were selected. The most widely used diagnostic tool for menopausal depression was CCMD-3. Effective rate and HAMD were the most commonly used assessment tools. Bosinhaeultang-gagam (Bushenjieyu-tang jiajian) and Gami-gammaegdaejotang(Jiawei ganmaidazao-tang) were used much more than other prescriptions, while Bupleuri Radix was the most used single medicine herb. Additionally, the Chinese medicine treatment group showed less adverse reactions than the control group. As a result, we could know frequently used herbal prescription and single medicinal herbs and this can be helpful in developing more advanced studies in future.

  • Herbal medicinal interaction on the purgative action of Chungpesagan-tang, which is one of the traditional Korean medical prescriptions that has been most frequently used for stroke was investigated. Chungpesagan-tang had more potent purgative activity than Rhei Rhizoma alone. When each Chungpesagan-tang composing herbal medicine with Rhei Rhizoma was extracted with water, water extract of Raphani Semen with Rhei Rhizoma had the most potent purgative activity. However, Raphani Semen had not purgative activity. When Rhei Rhizoma with Raphani Semen was extracted, sennoside A content in the water extract was increased. The transformation of sennoside A of Rhei Rhizoma to rheinanthrone by human intestinal microflora was weakly induced by Raphani Semen. These results suggest that the purgative action of Chungpesagan-tang could be controlled by the addition and subtraction of Chungpesagan-tang-composing herbal medicines.

  • As social interest in acne treatment has grown, various external preparations have been developed and studied. So, we investigated the external prescription which can treat acne in medical classics, then reviewed and divided it by dynasty. The data for analysis of Herbal formula was taken from 'medicine Dictionary of traditional Chinese medicine prescriptions(中醫方劑大辭典)'. 31 external medicines were searched, 3 were before song(宋) dynasty, 11 were Song(宋) dynasty, 11 were Yuan(元) dynasty, 7 were Ming(明) dynasty and 7 were Qing(淸) dynasty. The recipe and usage were only making them pill(丸) and paste(膏) using grinded medicinal herbs, then rubbing to face. As the age developed, unique manufacturing process(i.e fermentation method), and usage(i.e time-based usage, herbal medicine extracts for wash) were proposed. The external application with oriental medicine for acne used with Angelicae Gahuricae Radix(n=12), Bletillae Rhizoma(n=8), Syzygii Flos, Saposhnikoviae Radix(n=7) and so on. In particular, Bletillae Rhizoma was searched with high frequency in this study, but it was not included or studied in patent composition. The results of this study will provide basic data for future experiments and clinical studies.

  • The $S{\bar{u}}tra$ of Great Dhāraṇī of the Uṣṇīṣa-cittā is one of the most widely published scriptures of Esoteric Buddhism during the Goryeo and Joseon dynasty. The sutra is often referred to as a Buddhist medical scripture whose recitation is believed to allay diseases such as difficult birth, chest pain, and infectious and incurable diseases. It utilizes two major methods for healing: reciting and copying the sutra or copying the dharani and talisman which appear at the end of the text with fine cinnabar and ingesting them with aromatic water. In order to understand the medical and historical value of this sutra, this study examines the historical background of its establishment in early China and its migration to Korea in the Goryeo period. This study also investigates the identity and value of the scripture in Buddhist medical history. The oldest known printed texts of the sutra in Korea are dated to the late 11th century. Because of the material benefits of the text, the tradition of printing and distributing the sutra was very popular between the 13th and 19th centuries. Therefore, examples of the sutra having been used for medicinal purposes during rites are found in historical records. Finally, the study tries to identify the relationship between the treatment methods of the Sutra and those of Korean traditional medicine focusing on several Korean traditional medical texts such as the Hyangyak-Jibseongbang (Compilation of Native Korean Prescriptions), the Donguibogam, and the Euibang-Hapbu.

  • Objectives The network pharmacological study on herbal remedies in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is actively being carried out based on the TCM databases such as TCMID and TCMSP. It is necessary to select Sasang Constitution-specific (SC-s) herbs from these databases in order to study the prescriptions in Sasang Constitutional Medicine. Methods SC-s herbs and their processing types listed in "Dongyisusebowon Sinchukbon" were searched from TCMID and TCMSP. Results and Conclusions 1. There were total 144 herbs (Soeum 47, Soyang 37, Taeeum 44, Taeyang 16 specific herbs) listed in "Dongyisusebowon Sinchukbon". 2. There were total 130 herbs (Soeum 43, Soyang 37, Taeeum 42, Taeyang 8 specific herbs) searched from TCMID, and total 92 herbs (Soeum 31, Soyang 30, Taeeum 27, Taeyang 4 specific herbs) from TCMID. 3. In some cases, the name given in "Dongyisusebowon Sinchukbon" was different from that in TCMID and TCMSP. It was needed to be careful during the searching process. 4. Although the processing form of some herbs could be searched, there was a significant reduction in the herbal compound information compared to the raw form. It is necessary to reconsider whether or not to use the processing form. 5. Herbal scientific names given in TCMID and TCMSP or used in China and Korea were different each other in some cases. Additional screening process among such herbs would be required based on the efficacy of herbs used in clinical field.
