  • Time-dependent period and energy of free vibration of a string, whose length varies with time at a constant rate, are investigated by a traveling wave method. When the string length is increased, the vibration period increase, but the free vibration energy decrease with time. However, when the string undergoes retraction, the vibration energy increases with time. String tension together with non-zero instantaneous velocity at the moving boundary results in energy variation. Analytical solutions by the traveling wave method are compared with previous results using the perturbation method and Kotera's approach.

  • An active vibration control technique of a time-varying cantilever beam is proposed in this study. A simple in-house coil sensor instead of expensive commercial sensors was used to measure the vibrational displacement of the beam. Active band pass filters and artificial neutral net works detect the frequencies, amplitudes, and phases of the main vibration mode. The time constants of the low pass filter representing the positive position feedback controller are updated in real-time, which generates the control voltage input to actuate the piezoelectric actuator and suppress the vibration. An experiment was successfully performed to verify the algorithm for a cantilever beam, which fundamental natural frequency arbitrarily varies between 9 Hz ~ 18 Hz. The present active vibration suppression technique can be applied to variety of structures which undergoes large variation of dynamic characteristics while operating.

  • Hospitalized patients' perceptions of the quality of hospital foodservice and their importance were surveyed through questionnaires by 820(men 435, women 385) hospitalized patients in Seoul. The results are as follows: Most respondents agreed with the following foodservice characteristics that meals arrived exactly the same time every day(74.6%), cleanliness of dishes(64.9%), employees leave food within reach(60.2%), and employees who bring meals are cheerful(58.7%). Only 34.2% of respondents agreed to variety of menu; 12.9% of respondents viewed these foodservice characteristics as important in selecting a hospital; cleanliness of dishes(66.4%), variety of menu(55.0%), and varying food item combination(45.9%) were considered important by respondents; appetite, mood, and atmosphere of ward were positively correlated(p<0.001) with rating of the foodservice characteristics, but length of hospitalization was negatively correlated(p<0.001) with them; familiarity with cooking method, varying food item combination, cleanliness of the dishes, and foodservice employees' pleasant greeting were positively correlated(p<0.001) with rating of the taste, nutrition, and fresshness of the food characteristics.

  • The study on the vibration characteristics of annular sector plates is important for structural engineers. In this study the vibration modes and their natural frequencies of annular sector plates clamped along the inner circumferential edge are obtained by the time average holographic interferometer according to the varying sector angle. The experimental results agree well with those obtained by the numerical analysis. The vibration characteristics of annular sector plates shows great dependence on the sector angle. The radial nodal lines converge to the center of annular sector plate.

  • In this paper, the eigenstructure of a class of linear time varying systems, termed as linear quasi-time invariant(LQTI) systems, is investigated. A system composed of dynamic devices such as linear time varying capacitors and resistors can be an example of the class. To effectively describe and analyze the LQTI systems, a generalized differential operator G is introduced. Then the dynamic systems described by the operator G are studied in terms of eigenvalue, frequency characteristics, stability and an extended convolution. Some basic attributes of the operator G are compared with those of the differential operator D. Also the corresponding generalized Laplace transform pair is defined and relevant properties are derived for frequency domain analysis of the systems under consideration. As an application example, a LQTI circuit is examined by using the concept of eigenstructure of LQTI system. The LQTI filter processes the sinusoidal signals modulated by some functions.

  • Collection and storing of multiple time series data in real time requires large memory space. To solve this problem, the usage of varying sample size is proposed in the compression scheme using discrete cosine transform technique. Time series data set has characteristics such that a higher compression ratio can be achieved with smaller amount of value changes and lower frequency of the value changes. The coefficient of variation and the variability of the differences between adjacent data elements (VDAD) are presumed to be very good measures to represent the characteristics of the time series data and used as key parameters to determine the varying sample size. Test results showed that both VDAD-based and the coefficient of variation-based scheme generate excellent compression ratios. However, the former scheme uses much simpler sample size decision mechanism and results in better compression performance than the latter scheme.

  • Recently, the use of smartphones for structural health monitoring in civil engineering has drawn increasing attention due to their rapid development and popularization. In this study, the structural responses and dynamic characteristics of a 421-m-tall skyscraper during the landfall of Typhoon Muifa are monitored using an iPhone 13. The measured building acceleration responses are first corrected by the resampling technique since the sampling rate of smartphone-based measurement is unstable. Then, based on the corrected building acceleration, the wind-induced responses (i.e., along-wind and across-wind responses) are investigated and the serviceability performance of the skyscraper is assessed. Next, the amplitude-dependency and time-varying structural dynamic characteristics of the monitored supertall building during Typhoon Muifa are investigated by employing the random decrement technique and Bayesian spectral density approach. Moreover, the estimated results during Muifa are further compared with those of previous studies on the monitored building to discuss its long-term time-varying structural dynamic characteristics. The paper aims to demonstrate the applicability and effectiveness of smartphones for structural health monitoring of high-rise buildings.

  • In this paper, propagation characteristics are analyzed under the Korean propagation condition based on the measurements for Ka-band beacon signal of COMET satellite which moves in non-geostationary orbit. Radio propagation characteristics varying as time, range, and elevation angle are presented also. As results, it is concluded that free space loss is a major parameter to the radio propagation characteristics varying as a range in clear sky. In addition, the effect of elevation angle is negligible because COMETS is observed above 40 degree.

  • This paper is focused on the analysis of the noise and vibration measured near the wheelset of the high-speed trains using a time-varying frequency transform as a preliminary research of running monitoring. Due to the non-stationary characteristics, it is necessary to examine noise and vibration of the train with time-varying frequency transforms. In this paper, the short-time Fourier transform method is utilized - the stored data is localized by modulating with a window function, and Fourier transform is taken to each localized data. For the examination, the non-stationary noise and vibration of the high-speed train's wheelset are measured by using some microphones and accelerometers, and those signals are stored in a on-board data acquisition system. The non-stationary random signal analyses with the short-time Fourier transform are performed, and the result are classified as follows; auto-spectral density, cross-spectral density, frequency response, and coherence functions. From those functions, it is possible to observe the frequency characteristics of sleepers, switchers, tunnels, and steel bridges. Also, some distinct peaks, which are not dependent upon the train's speed, are identified from the results.

  • This paper proposes an improved signal processing strategy for accurate feedwater flowrate estimation in nuclear power plants. It is generally known that ∼2% thermal power errors occur due to fouling Phenomena in feedwater flowmeters. In the strategy Proposed, the noises included in feedwater flowrate signal are classified into rapidly varying noises and gradually varying noises according to the characteristics in a frequency domain. The estimation precision is enhanced by introducing a low pass filter with the wavelet analysis against rapidly varying noises, and an autoassociative neural network which takes charge of the correction of only gradually varying noises. The modified multivariate stratification sampling using the concept of time stratification and MAXIMIN criteria is developed to overcome the shortcoming of a general random sampling. In addition the multi-stage robust training method is developed to increase the quality and reliability of training signals. Some validations using the simulated data from a micro-simulator were carried out. In the validation tests, the proposed methodology removed both rapidly varying noises and gradually varying noises respectively in each de-noising step, and 5.54% root mean square errors of initial noisy signals were decreased to 0.674% after de-noising. These results indicate that it is possible to estimate the reactor thermal power more elaborately by adopting this strategy.
