  • To investigate temporal and spatial variations of hydrodynamics and environmental conditions in Gyeonggi Bay, including Han River estuary, numerical experiments were performed using 3-dimensional fine grid numerical ocean model. The model successfully reproduced the physical phenomena already known in Gyeonggi Bay where tide and fresh water discharge are dominant forcings. The calculated harmonic constants of tide and tidal current agreed well with those of observations at nine tide stations and two tidal current stations. Tidal asymmetries along the Yeomha Waterway, mainly caused by non-linear effect, were well reproduced and agreed well with observations. Time series of salinity at four stations(A, B, C and D) and horizontal distributions of monthly averaged salinity show that Gyodong and Seokmo Waterways play an important role in fresh water discharge into the Gyeonggi Bay rather than Yeomha Waterway.

  • A two-dimensional numerical tidal model with $1/3^\circ$ resolution has been established to investigate the distribution of semidiurnal constituents$(M_2,\;S_2,\;K_2,\;N_2)$ and diurnal constituents$(K_1,\;O_1,\;P_1,\;Q_1)$ of the global ocean. The $1/3^\circ$ numerical model has been applied to the computation of detailed tidal distributions in the marginal seas and the shelf seas. Tidal characteristics in shallow areas could be hardly resolved with the existing global chart due to the low resolution. Computed tidal charts obtained by $1/3^\circ$ numerical model have been compared with the existing global charts and the altimetry-derived tidal charts. Computed harmonic constants have also been com-pared with the pelagic tidal observations. The results obtained with fine-grid numerical model can be used to determine the time-independent sea surface topography by removing the tidal components from the altimetry-derived sea surface height.

  • To arrange effectively artificial reefs for marine afforestation, tidal currents were analyzed by numerical experiments. The numerical experiments were carried out by EFDC(Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code), and water column was vertically divided 5 layers. Tidal current patterns showed to be affected by main current at outside of study area, and circle currents of two were observed from analysis of residual currents. The calculated harmonic constants of tide and tidal current agreed well with those of observations at two stations for tide and two stations for tidal current. The model successfully reproduced the tidal current around the Geomoondo marine afforestation. It suggest that artificial reefs for marine afforestation should be installed belt zone at study area.

  • In coastal region, tidal harmonic constants of semi-diurnal tides and nonlinear tides were collected. The observed tide data of KHOA were analyzed by a tide harmonic analysis method. In the southwestern coasts and Han river estuary, nonlinear tides are clearly generated. The generation of tide non-linearity and tide asymmetry is closely related with tide form factor in Korean coastal zone. Tide non-linearity and asymmetry in Mokpo harbour have increased by a series of coastal development projects. The increase has caused rise of high water level and drop of low water level, and increase of tidal range. In Kunsan Outport, tidal range has been declined due to inter-annual change of nonlinear tides after completion of Samangeum sea-dyke.

  • Analyzing the tide data taken at Kunsan inner and Outer ports, non-tidal and mean sea level and harmonic constants of major constituents are investigated to examine the effects of the dyke gate operation on the sea level change in Keum River estuary. Non-tidal and annual mean sea levels decrease at Kunsan Inner and Outer ports after the dyke gate operation, especially showing an abrupt drop of non-tidal sea level at Kunsan Inner port. This non-tidal sea level drop results in the mean sea level gradient change between the inner and outer port, which can be mainly explained in terms of the decrease of river discharge from the dyke. Amplitudes of the $M_2$ and $S_2$ tides at the Inner port increase after the dyke gate operation, showing an abrupt jump, and phases of both tides slightly decrease. Amplitude and phase of the $K_1$ and $O_1$ tides show slight changes after the dyke gate operation. This significant change of semi diurnal tide amplitude is believed as a result of superposition of incident tidal wave and reflected tidal wave from the dyke.

  • Two-dimensional numerical models with 1$^{\circ}$ and 1/3$^{\circ}$ resolution have been established to investigate the Ma distribution of global ocean tides. Especially, a 1/3$^{\circ}$ numerical model in this study has the most fine resolution among the existing global tidal model and it has been applied to the computation of detailed tidal distributions in the marginal seas and the shelf seas. Tidal characteristics in shallow areas could be hardly interpreted with the existing global chart due to the low resolution. The Ma tidal charts obtaind by 1$^{\circ}$ and 1/3$^{\circ}$ numerical model have been compared with the existing global maps and the altimetry-derived tidal charts. Also, the computed harmonic constants have been compared with the pelagic observations. The results obtained by 1/3$^{\circ}$ numerical model show better agreement with the existing global charts and the observed data than those obtained by 1$^{\circ}$ model. The possibility has been presented that the results obtained by 1/3$^{\circ}$ model can provide the open boundary conditions of the regional tidal numerical model.

  • In order to examine the characteristics of tidal wave from the estuary to upsteam of tidal river, tidal asymmetry was identified based on analysis of the harmonic constants of M2 and M4 tidal constituents in the domestic western coastal regions. As shallow water tide is greatly developed in the estuary, flood dominance in Han River and Keum River, and ebb dominance in Youngsan River are developed. These tidal asymmetries can be reconfirmed by analyzing the tidal current data. Unlike having reciprocating tidal current patterns in Keum and Youngsan estuaries, rotaing tidal current pattern is shown in the Han River estuary due to the complex topography and waterways around Ganghwa Island area. However, when residual current is removed, flood dominance is shown in consistency with the tide data. The tidal asymmetry in the estuary tends to intensify with the growth in shallow water tide as the tidal wave propagates to upstream of tidal river. Energy dissipation, in shallow Han River and Keum River classified as SD estuaries, is very large regarding bottom friction characteristics. On the other hand, the deep Youngsan River, classified as a WD estuary, shows less energy dissipation.

  • In this study we try to identify the three-dimensional mixing characteristics of Seomjin River discharges in Seomjin River Estuary and Gwangyang Bay using a seasonal field observation (CTD) during spring tide and a three-dimensional numerical model with EFDC (Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code). The tidal elevation conditions of the four main tidal harmonic constituents on the open boundary and river discharges and thermal effluents at the specific boundary are considered. The calculated harmonic constants of tide and tidal current agreed well with those of observations at two stations for tide and two stations for tidal current. The model successfully reproduced well known the estuarine circulation in Seomjin River Estuary where tide and river discharges are dominant forcings. In the winter mean discharges case, tidal currents move Seomjin River discharges in Seomjin River mouth and in the summer mean discharges case, river flows move Seomjin River discharges near ae Seomjin River Estuary. A three-dimensional mixing characteristics of Seomjin River Estuary show well a three-dimensional estuarine circulation and thermal effluents effect to the seasonal variation of river discharges.

  • This study represents results of analysis of sea level record at Mokpo for the years 1956~1982. The results are believed to be the first detailed analysis for the Port of Mokpo. The tidal constants are obtained from separate yearly extended harmonic analysis. The variability of these yearly analysis gives estimates of effects on astronomical tide due to Youngsan Barrier. Multiple statistics of sea level record for the years 1965~1980 and 1981~1982 are presented separately to evaluate the distribution of sea level frequency due to the construction of Barrier. Some of preliminary results are presented and indication of further studies are discussed.
