A simple-structured thermal plasma generator for waste gas treatment has been studied. The thermal plasma technology applied to waste treatment has undoubtedly gained high importance owing to its outstanding properties such as flexibility, compact reactor, and clean treatment. Moreover, the thermal plasma generated by ac power has some additional advantages such as simple electrode system and easy maintenance. A prototype 200kW class plasma generator with specifications of 10-30m/sec gas velocity and 3000-5000K temperature on the center just outside of the nozzle has been designed and tested. Case studies on heat transfer, heat flow, velocity distribution, and temperature distribution using a commercial simulation package show lots of flexibility in design. The experimental results from theprototype generator show that the ac thermal plasma is easily controlled by working gas flow once it is ignited. A stabilization condition is discussed with the data from monitoring arc voltage drops with respect to gas flow rate during the test.
In this study, we attempt to produce a semi-elliptical riblet with a shark skin-like surface using wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM) and micro molding techniques. Our design for the production of the semi-elliptical mold includes an electrode, a winding roller, and a guide on the WEDM system. A replication mold with negative riblets is machined using WEDM, and a shark skin inspired surface with positive riblets is fabricated using a micro molding technique. For a comparison with the original shark skin, a shark skin replica is also produced using the micro molding technique directly from a shark skin template. Droplet contact angles on a flat surface, the shark skin replica, and the epoxy resin-based micro riblet shark skin-like surface are evaluated. The effect of a Teflon coating on the contact angles for the three different surfaces is also investigated. The results show the micro riblet with a shark skin-like surface has a similar contact angle as the shark skin replica, which means that the simplified riblet shark skin surface strongly influences the performance of wettability. This study confirms the effectiveness of using the WEDM method to prepare hydrophobic surfaces with diverse surface patterns.
A study on the corrosion inhibition of metals is important in many industrial applications (carbon steel, copper, aluminum, SUS 304, nickel). In this study, we investigated the C-V diagrams related to the surface corrosion of metals. It was observed through the SEM that the surface corrosion state of the various metals had the corrosion potential by the scan rate and the organic inhibitor containing an amine group. We determined to measure cyclic voltammetry using the three-electrode system. The measurement of oxidation and reduction ranged from -1350mV to 1650mV. The scan rate was 50, 100, 150, and 200mV/s. It turned out that the C-V characterization of SUS 304 was irreversible process caused by the oxidation current from the cyclic voltammogram. After adding organic inhibitors, the adsorption film was constituted, and the passive phenomena happened. As a result, it was revealed that the inhibition effect of metal corrosion depends on the molecular interaction, and the interaction has influence on the adsorption complex.
In this study, multilayered graphene was easily transferred to the target substrate in one step using thermal release tape. The transmittance of the transferred graphene according to the number of layers was measured using a spectrophotometer. The sheet resistance was measured using a four-point probe system. Graphene formed using this transfer method showed almost the same electrical and optical properties as that formed using the conventional poly (methyl methacrylate) transfer method. This method is suitable for the mass production of graphene because of the short process time and easy large-area transfer. In addition, multilayered graphene can be transferred on various substrates without wetting problem using the one-step dry transfer method. In this work, this easy transfer method was used for dielectric substrates such as glass, paper and polyethylene terephthalate, and a sheet resistance of ~240 ohm/sq was obtained with three-layer graphene. By fabricating organic solar cells, we verified the feasibility of using this method for optoelectronic devices.

Pyroprocessing at KAERI (Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute) consists of pretreatment, electroreduction, electrorefining and electrowinning. SFR (Sodium Fast Reactor) fuel is prepared from the electrowinning process which is composed of LCC (Liquid Cadmium Process) and Cd distillation et al. LCC is an electrochemical process to obtain actinides from spent fuel. In order to recover actinides inert anodes such as carbon material are used, where chlorine gas ($Cl_2$) evolves on the surface of the carbon material. And, stainless steel (SUS) crucible should be installed in large-scale electrowinning system. Therefore, the effect of chlorine on the SUS material needs to be studied. LiCl-KCl-$UCl_3$-$NdCl_3$-$CeCl_3$-$LaCl_3$-$YCl_3$ salt was contained in 2 kinds of electrolytic crucible having an inner diameter of 5cm, made of an insulated alumina and an SUS, respectively. And, three kinds of electrodes such as cathode, anode, reference were used for the electrochemical experiments. Both solid tungsten (W) and LCC were used as cathodes. Cd of 45 g as the cathode material was contained in alumina crucibles for the deposition experiments, where the crucible has an inner diameter of 3 cm. Glassy carbon rod with the diameter of 0.3 cm was employed as an anode, where shroud was not used for the anode. A pyrex tube containing LiCl-KCl-1mol% AgCl and silver (Ag) wire having a diameter of 0.1cm was used as a reference electrode. Electrodeposition experiments were conducted at $500^{\circ}C$ at the current densities of $50{\sim}100mA/cm^2$. In conclusion, Fe ions were produced in the salt during the electrodeposition by the reaction of chlorine evolved from the anode and Fe of the SUS crucible and thereby LCC system using SUS crucible showed very low current efficiencies compared with the system using the insulated alumina crucible. Anode shroud needs to be installed around the glassy carbon not to influence surrounding SUS material.
This study sought to develop clothing for a companion animal that can provide stable ECG measurements. A pattern for the smart clothing of a companion dog was manufactured using the replica method to select a location and method that best suited the stable measurement of ECG and improved the clothing's fitness. The smart clothing was developed as the following three types: strap type, top type, and combined top and vest type with a detachable wireless ECG monitor. The detection abilities of these were observed using the PQRST rate taken after ECG measurements while the three companion dogs were tested while resting and moving. The results revealed that apart from using an electrode, applying a gel pad is the most effective way to achieve stable ECG measurements, and the central chest region is more reliable than the left armpit for providing steady readings. The combined top and vest type showed the highest average ECG PQRST detection number, meaning that the ECG signal measurement was steady. These results may contribute to the measurement of ECG in smartwear for U-Healthcare to measure other biometric data of a companion dog.

In order to measure the segmental impedance of the body, a bioelectrical impedance measurement system (BIMS) using multi-frequency applying method and two-electrode method was implemented in this study. The BIMS was composed of constant current source, automatic gain control, and multi-frequency generation units. Three experiments were performed using the BIMS and a commercial impedance analyzer (CIA). First, in order to evaluate the performance of the BIMS, four RC circuits connected with a resistor and capacitor in serial and/or parallel were composed. Bioelectrical impedance (BI) was measured by applying multi-frequencies -5, 10, 50, 100, 150, 200, 300, 400, and 500 KHz - to each circuit. BI values measured by the BIMS were in good agreement with those obtained by the CIA for four RC circuits. Second, after measuring BI at each frequency by applying multi-frequency to the left and right forearm and the popliteal region of the body, BI values measured by the BIMS were compared to those acquired by the CIA. Third, when the distance between electrodes was changed to 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, and 15 cm, BI by the BIMS was also compared to BI from the CIA. In addition, BI of extracellular fluid (ECF) was measured at each frequency ranging from 10 to 500 KHz. BI of intracellular fluid (ICF) was calculated by subtracting BI of ECF measured at 500 kHZ from BI measured at seven frequencies ranging from 50 to 500 KHz. BI of ICF and ECF decreased as the frequency increased. BI of ICF sharply decreased at frequencies above 300 KHz.
