SoC Implementation of Fingerprint Feature Extraction System with Ridge Following (융선추적을 이용한 지문 특징점 추출기의 SoC 구현)

  • This paper presents an System-on-Chip(SoC) implementation of fingerprint feature extraction system. Typical fingerprint feature extraction systems employ binarization and thinning processes which cause many extraction errors for low qualify fingerprint images and degrade the accuracy of the entire fingerprint recognition system. To solve these problems, an algorithm directly following ridgelines without the binarization and thinning process has been proposed. However, the computational requirement of the algorithm makes it hard to implement it on SoCs by using software only. This paper presents an implementation of the ridge-following algorithm onto SoCs. The algorithm has been modified to increase the efficiency of hardwares. Each function block of the algorithm has been implemented in hardware or in software by considering its computational complexity, cost and utilization of the hardware, and efficiency of the entire system. The fingerprint feature extraction system has been developed as an IP for SoCs, hence it can be used on many kinds of SoCs for smart cards.

  • To process the dynamic images in real time, there could be many constraints on the hardware. Kalman Filter has been used to estimate motion information and use the information in predicting the appearance of targets in succeeding frames. This paper suggests algorithm about lane recognition using Kalman Filter which is one of operations research technique.

  • In the recognitionsystem of car license plate, it is very important to extract the character from the license plate and recognize the extrated character. In this paper, I use the adaptive algorithm to recognize the charactor of licensse plate image. The adaptive algorithm is compounded of thinning algorithm template matching,algarthm, vector algorithm and so on. The adaptive algorithm was used to recognize the character from license image. In the result of expenment, character recognition is about up to 90% with the adaptive algorithm for the character region.

  • The thinning process which is commonly used in extracting skeletons from handwritten Hangul characters has a problem of distorting the original pattern shapes. This paper proposes a method of skeleton extraction using a shape decomposition algorithm. We decompose the character pattern into a set of near convex parts using a shape decomposition algorithm. From the shape-decomposed pattern, we detect the joint parts and extract the skeletons from the parts incident to the joint parts. Then the skeletons not incident to the joint parts are extracted. Finally, the process of skeleton extension is performed to ensure the connectivity. We setup five criteria for the comparison of quality of skeletons extracted by our method and the thinning based method. The comparison shows the superiority of our method in terms of several criteria.

  • In this paper, we proposed an algorithm for personal identification of dorsal surface pattern of hand vein pattern using graph theory. Using dense ranee data images of the hand vein pattern, we used matching algorithm within the frame work of graph theory for the determination of the desired correspondence. Through preprocessing, the captured images are more sharp, clear and thinning. After thinning, the images are normalized and make graph with node and edge set. This normalized graph can make adjacent matrix. Each adjacent matrix from individual vein pattern are different. From examining the performance of individual vein patterns, we can approach performances well kind biometric technique.

  • In this paper, we propose a vision algorithm for the inspection of very small RF-chip inductor which is used in mobile-communication terminal. The proposed method divides coil part from the inductor body by local adaptive thresholding and integral projection method. After dividing work, the coil components are extracted by thinning and labelling techniques. The test items are the number of turns, the intervals in coil, and the measure of uniformity between the extracted lines. If the values of these are more than the specific value a tested product is decided bad one. In the simulation, the proposed method has a good performance.

  • Automatic fingerprint identification is a process of direction extraction, binarization, thinning, minutiae extraction of fingerprint identification. In this process, binarization after direction extraction affects a process of thinning and minutiae extraction. The fasle binarization is increased the false minutiae extraction rate. In this paper, we proposed more exact minutiae extraction algorithm with more enhanced binarization method, compared with traditional binarization process. We could have more enhanced results by using the direction and the half distance between ridges as the threshold of binarization process. In an experiment, Fingerprint images from NIST DBI are tested and the result shows that the proposed binarization algorithm increases minutiae extraction.

  • This paper presents a method to convert 3D CAD model to an appropriate analysis model using wrap-around, smooth-out and thinning operators that have been originally developed to realize the multi-resolution modeling. Wrap-around and smooth-out operators are used to simplify 3D model, and thinning operator is to reduce the dimension of a target object with simultaneously decomposing the simplified 3D model to 1D or 2D shapes. By using the simplification and dimension-reduction operations in an appropriate way, the user can generate an analysis model that matches specific applications. The advantage of this method is that the user can create optimized analysis models of various simplification levels by selecting appropriate number of detailed features and removing them.

A Hardware Architecture for Retaining the Connectivity in Gray - Scale Image (그레이 레벨 연결성 복원 하드웨어 구조)

  • In this paper, we have proposed the hardware architecture which implements the algorithm for retaining the connectivity which prevents disconnecting in the gray-scale image thinning To perform the image thinning in a real time which find a skeleton in image, it is necessary to examine the connectivity of the skeleton in a real time. The proposed architecture finds the connectivity number in the 4-clock period. The architecture is consists of three blocks, PS(Parallel to Serial) Converter and State Generator and Ridge Checker. The PS Converter changes the 3$\times$3 gray level image to four sets of image pixels. The State Generator examine the connectivity of the central pixel by searching the data from the PS Converter. the 3$\times$3 gray level image determines. The Ridge Checker determines whether the central pixel is on the skeleton or not The proposed architecture finds the connectivity of the central pixel in a 3$\times$3 gray level image in the 4-clocks. The total circuits are verified by the design tools and operate correctly.

  • In this study, we performed algorithm development of automatic symptom degree for patient with hallux valgus one of the representative foot disease of morden. And this study proposes an efficient automated technique that is different from the original analog diagnosis for treatment and surgery of hallux valgus using digital image process. And we used X-Ray images of both a normal and a patient with hallux valgus in the procedure. First, we marked the standard angle on the X-Ray image of normal through Overlap & Add technique. Then we created a standard image through thinning filter and roberts filter(edge detection algorithm). Second, we used sobel filter of edge detection algorithm on the X-Ray image of patient. Moreover, we went another overlap & add technique procedure with both normal and patient image that we made. With the output, we projected the display detection image onto the screen. Finally, with the display detection image, we could measure and project the diagnosis angle of hallux valgus. And this confirms that this method is much more practical and applicable for another orthopedics disease than the prior one.
