  • This paper defends Stalnaker's theory of indicative conditionals. His theory consists of selection functions and pragmatic constraints. The selection function takes a certain possible world(W) and a proposition(A) to yield a possilble world that is similar to W and in which A is true. And the pragmatic constraints plays role to make selection functions apply just to indicative conditionals. According to Stalnaker, as indicative conditionals has strong truth-value, uncontested principle always holds but passage principle does not always hold. However, his theory can explain why passage principle sometimes holds by means of pragmatic constraints. Also, this paper argues that Stalnaker's theory is the most acceptable one among others, by replying to criticisms suggested by Adamsians and the problem raised by Gibbard and other criticisms.

  • In this paper, we investigate how generators' ramp-rate constraints may influence their equilibrium strategy formulation. In the market model proposed in this study, the generators' ramp-rate constraints are explicitly represented. In order to fully characterize the inter-temporal nature of the ramp-rate constraints, a dynamic game model is presented. The subgame perfect Nash equilibrium is adopted as the solution of the game and the backward induction procedure for the solution of the game is designed in this paper. The inter-temporal nature of the ramp-rate constraints results in the Markov property of the game, and we have found that the Markov property of the game significantly simplifies the subgame perfect Nash equilibrium characterization. Finally, a simple electricity market numerical illustration is presented for the successful application of the approach proposed.

  • This paper aims to investigate the acoustic characteristics of the vowels attested in Korean and French and to seek a way of understanding them from a phonological point of view. We first compare the two vowel systems by measuring the actual frequencies of the formants using CSL. It is shown that the first and second formants vary in wider range in French compared to Korean. In order to understand the two vowel systems from a phonological point of view, we apply the theory of Licensing Constraints, proposed and developed by Kaye (1994), and Charette and Kaye (1994). We propose the licensing constraints placed upon the vowels both in Korean and French. For Korean, we propose the licensing constraints such that both elements I and U must be heads. For French, we claim the following licensing constraints: U in a headed expression must be head, A cannot be head, and Nothing can only license an expression A in it.

  • In this paper, we discuss the relative positioning of Wh-related English prepositions in a Wh-interrogative construction within the Optimality Theory [1-2]. By employing the two key constraints such as *Prep-Str and Align which are developed for the positioning of Wh-related prepositions from Romance languages such as French and Italian [3] and for the positioning of Wh-related prepositions from the middle English prose from 1500 to 1900 [4-6], and by slightly modifying the constraint hierarchy of *Prep-STR >>Align into **PrepSTR <<>>Align, Choi argues that his new theory can properly explain the unique behaviors of English Whrelated prepositions being able to take two 'optional' operations such as pied-piping and stranding to find legitimate landing sites in a Wh-interrogative construction [7]. However, this new analysis again reveals the following critical problems: (1) Unlike the 'light' English Wh-related prepositions which can two optional operations for legitimate landing sites in a Wh-interrogative construction, 'heavy' Wh-related English prepositions are not allowed to have such two options: they take just one option of pied-piping only. Thus, (2) his argumentation based on the existing constraints and the modified constraint hierarchy is neither general enough nor proper to explain the issue of the relative positioning for all English Wh-related preposition cases. To include such exceptional syntactic property of the 'heavy' preposition cases within the Optimality Theory, we suggest a new constraint of *HPrep-STR ranked at the highest position of the constraint hierarchy to disallow a 'heavy' or multi-syllabic Wh-related English preposition to stay alone at the end of a sentence. The new final hierarchy of constraints we suggest to explain the exceptional positioning of 'heavy' Wh-related prepositions together with the other 'light' Wh-related prepositions in English Wh-interrogative construction will be as follows: *HPrep-STR>>Align<<>>*Prep-STR.

  • Production Improvement Method in TOC consists of five steps, but it is very difficult for most firms to implement it because it lacks the detailed methods at each step. This paper suggests some of detailed methods to implement the TOC. In the first step, computer simulation is used to identify the constraints in production lines. Subsequently, ASP, AUT, and CM calculation are defined for the second step, which are helpful to exploit the company's constraints. We also suggest the OEE method to effectively exploit the constraints of production lines in the factory. Finally the TOC/OEE procedure is suggested to optimize the investment in the fourth step. As an illustrative example, we introduce a case of a wafer manufacturer to adopt the suggested methods. The benefits of implementating the suggested methods are addressed in the framework of the balanced scorecard.

  • Multiperiod portfolio selection problem attracts more and more attentions because it is in accordance with the practical investment decision-making problem. However, the existing literature on this field is almost undertaken by regarding security returns as random variables in the framework of probability theory. Different from these works, we assume that security returns are uncertain variables which may be given by the experts, and take absolute deviation as a risk measure in the framework of uncertainty theory. In this paper, a new multiperiod mean absolute deviation uncertain portfolio selection models is presented by taking transaction costs, borrowing constraints and threshold constraints into account, which an optimal investment policy can be generated to help investors not only achieve an optimal return, but also have a good risk control. Threshold constraints limit the amount of capital to be invested in each stock and prevent very small investments in any stock. Based on uncertain theories, the model is converted to a dynamic optimization problem. Because of the transaction costs, the model is a dynamic optimization problem with path dependence. To solve the new model in general cases, the forward dynamic programming method is presented. In addition, a numerical example is also presented to illustrate the modeling idea and the effectiveness of the designed algorithm.

  • This paper focuses on the analysis of the Chinese transliterations of English place names in the Optimality Theory (OT) [1]. Three groups of monosyllabic, disyllabic and multisyllabic English place names are analyzed to represent the hierarchical ranking of both Markedness and Faithfulness constraints in terms of sound epenthesis, which is one of the most important repair strategies named the Preservation Principle [2] devised to "preserve" every source segment (or sound) of the target place names. By doing so, this paper tries to answer the question of why sound epenthesis takes place in transliterating words between languages. With the help of the established ranking of the relevant constraints, this paper explains the process of sound epenthesis formally.

  • This paper presents an optimization model with performance constraints for two kinds of graph elements layout problem. The layout problem is partitioned into finite subproblems by using graph theory and group theory, such that each subproblem overcomes its on-off nature about optimal variable. Furthermore each subproblem is relaxed and the continuity about optimal variable doesn't change. We construct a min-max problem which is locally equivalent to the relaxed subproblem and develop the first order necessary and sufficient conditions for the relaxed subproblem by virtue of the min-max problem and the theories of convex analysis and nonsmooth optimization. The global optimal solution can be obtained through the first order optimality conditions.

  • The problem of minimization of energy, consumed by the robot manipulator, is important, notably for larger manipulators, higher working speeds, and loads. Obviously, the stated problem requires the application of optimal control theory, which is being successfully applied for linear system and certain classes of nonlinear systems. However, the application of optimal control theory(in energy or time optimization) leads to substantial practical difficulties, so that significant simplifications are usually performed, either in model complexity or by neglecting the existing constraints. In this paper the problem of obtaining such an optimization method. which would take into account the complete system dynamics and all the constraints is considered. The only method found to be suitable for such a complex optimization should be based on dynamic programming.

  • Recently, many business and government organizations have benefitted by executing projects using TOC-CCPM(Theory of Constraints-Critical Chain Project Management). In parallel, Earned Value Management(EVM) metrics have also become popular. Many organizations like US government requires that all large projects measure and report project progress status using EVM. Thus, project management in business fields such as plant construction, IT development, ship building need to integrate TOC-CCPM and EVM in oder to keep and reduce the delivery date of projects for improvement of customer satisfaction and enlargement of business opportunity. This paper proposes the scheme and case of developing the Synchro-EVM system which TOC-CCPM and EVM are connected.
