Wind Tunnel Investigation of Fluctuating Pressure Inside Building (풍하중에 의한 건물내부 압력의 동적변화에 관한 연구)

  • The nature of fluctuating air pressure inside building was studied by testing a building model in a wind tunnel. The model has a single room and a window opening. Various opening conditions were tested in both laminar uniform wind and turbulent boundary-layer wind. The RMS and the spectra of the fluctuating internal pressure were measured. The test results support a recent theory which predicts the behavior of internal pressure under high wind based on aerodynamic analysis.

Simulations of Pollutant Dispersion over Rectangular Building (사각 건물 주위의 오염물 확산에 대한 수치해석적 연구)

  • Wind flow perturbations, recirculations and turbulence generated by buildings often dominate air pollutant distributions around buildings. This paper describes dispersion of contaminants in the vicinity of a building by solving the concentration equation based on previously simulated wind flow field. Turbulence closure is achieved by using the standard k-ε two-equation model. The paper shows application of the CIP method for solving a species concentration equation of contaminant gas around a rectangular building for two different sources under conditions of neutral atmospheric stratification. Results have been compared to the experimental data and the previous numerical results by hybrid scheme. The computational results of concentration profiles by the CIP method agree well with experimental data.

  • In recent years, rainscreen walls based on the pressure equalization principle are often used in building construction. To improve the understanding of the influence of several design parameters on the pressure equalization performance of such wall systems, a theoretical consideration of the problem may be more appropriate. On this basis, this paper presents two theoretical models, one based on mass balance and the other based on the Helmholtz resonator theory, for the prediction of cavity pressure in rigid rainscreen walls. New measures to assess the degree of pressure equalization of rainscreen walls are also suggested. The results show that the model based on mass balance is sufficiently accurate and efficient in predicting the cavity pressure variations. Further, the performance of the proposed model is evaluated utilizing the data obtained from full-scale tests and the results are discussed in detail.

  • Growing concern and technical improvement in the housing industry has promoted continuous customization to be the most significant parameter for ecological and social sustainability of housing. The basic principle of Open Building is based on the concept of sustainability, but the theoretical relationship of the open housing system in terms of environmental architecture has not been examined profoundly yet. In order to generate an overall approach toward sustainable housing, a further alignment between Open Building and sustainability should be established. Therefore, this study aims at the establishment of the theoretical relationship between Open Housing system and environmental architecture, and the examination of Open Housing system in terms of sustainability for the suggestion of the future development in housing environment.

  • In a construction project in which cooperation among project members gets its importance, trust among construction site members should be foundation to enhance team spirit and achievement. This study analyzes the trust network among staff by using social network analysis (SNA) theory for organizations in apartment complex construction sites in Korea. The analysis illustrates higher level of trust for those positioning in the higher positions in hierarchy and having greater experiences. It might be attributable to own features of construction works where skills are acquired by site experience.

  • It is widely recommended that teachers should actively mediate students' engagement with tools such as manipulative materials. This paper is to help to parse classroom life so that both social and psychological aspects are accounted for and coordinated. Building on the theory of affordances from ecological psychology and the activity theory from sociocultural perspectives, the main strategy of this paper is to view manipulative materials as simultaneously participating in social and psychological activity systems. Within these activity systems it is charted how both mathematical affordances related to the structure of mathematical concepts and ecological affordances related to socially situated classroom practices need to be considered by teachers in effective mediation of mathematical manipulatives. This paper has three major sections. The first section develops a theoretical extension of Gibson's theory of affordances from natural to social environments. The second section introduces mathematical and ecological affordances using empirical data from a grade two elementary school classroom. The third section illustrates the need of coordinating the two affordances as embedded in different activity systems.

  • Problems solved by the TRIZ method have been developed and applied in many fields ranging from management as well as engineering. Most of the problems occurring in the construction site should be applied immediately. To solve the problem of building engineering, formulation of the problem solving process using the TRIZ method is needed. This study classified and analyzed the problem solving process of architectural engineering technology in accordance with the procedures of TRIZ, and showed the case of solving problem in the field and the availability of TRIZ theory in architectural engineering. This paper shows that the TRIZ theory can be used as a tool for creative problem solving and cost reduction in architectural engineering.
