  • In the study, investigation of fiber- reinforced composite materials that can be an alternative to conventional steel was performed by finite element analysis with the help of software. Steel and composite materials have been studied on a four axle truck chassis model. Three-dimensional finite element model was created with software, and then analyzes were performed. The analyses were performed for static and dynamic/fatigue cases. Fatigue cases are formed with the help of design spectra model and fatigue analyses were performed as static analyses with this design spectra. First, analyses were performed for steel and after that optimization analyses were made for the AS4-PEEK carbon fiber composite and Eglass-Epoxy fiber composite materials. Optimization of composite material analyzes include determining the total laminate thickness, thickness of each ply, orientation of each ply and ply stacking sequence. Analyzes were made according to macro mechanical properties of composite, micromechanics case has not been considered. Improvements in weight reduction up to %50 provided at the end of the composite optimization analyzes with satisfying stiffness performance of chassis. Fatigue strength of the composite structure depends on various factors such as, fiber orientation, ply thickness, ply stack sequence, fiber ductility, ductility of the matrix, loading angle. Therefore, the accuracy of theoretical calculations and analyzes should be correlated by testing.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the behavior of a reinforced earth wall by modeling the properties of the interface between soil and reinforced elements as well as the non-linear stress-strain characteristics of soil. The effect of lateral earth pressures induced during construction is also included in the analyses. The interface element used to evaluate the relative movement of the interface between soil/reinforcement and soil/wall- facing has a zero thickness and essentially consists of normal and shear springs. The behavior of soil element is calculated based on the hyperbolic model. The computer program SSCOMPPC which includes the interface element, hyperbolic model and bi-linear model is applied in this study. From the analyses, it is showed that the locus of maximum tension were closed to the hi-linear failure line of theoretical analyses. The lateral displacement of SSCOMPPC is larger than that of the FLAC which adopts the elastic model. This means the analysis which is adopted the hyperbolic model and interface element induced more larger displacement.

  • The present paper shows a new non-tensorial approach to derive basic equations for various structural analyses. It can be used directly in numerical computation procedures. The aim of the paper is, however, to show that the approach serves as an excellent tool for analytical purposes also, working as a link between analytical and numerical techniques. The paper gives a method to derive, at first, expressions for strains in general beam and shell analyses, and secondly, the governing equilibrium equations. The approach is based on the utilization of local fixed Cartesian coordinate systems. Applying these, all the definitions required are the simple basic ones, well-known from the analyses in common global coordinates. In addition, the familiar principle of virtual work has been adopted. The method will be, apparently, most powerful in teaching the theories of curved beam and shell structures for students not familiar with tensor analysis. The final results obtained have no novelty value in themselves, but the procedure developed opens through its systematic and graphic progress a new standpoint to theoretical considerations.

  • This paper presents numerical and theoretical investigations on the strain rate in steel-concrete composite (SC) panels under low-velocity impact of a hemispherical rigid body. Finite element analyses were performed on five specimens with different loading rates. The impact energy was kept constant to eliminate its influence by simultaneously altering the velocity and mass of the projectile. Results show that the strain rate in most parts of the specimens was low and its influence on bearing capacity and energy dissipation was limited in an average sense of space and time. Therefore, the strain rate effect can be ignored for the analyses of global deformation. However, the strain rate effect should be considered in local contact problems. Equations of the local strain and strain rate were theoretically derived.

  • Redundant actuated parallel kinematic machines (PKMs) have been widely researched to increase stiffness of PKMs. This paper presents theoretical analyses on the stiffness of non-redundant and redundant actuated PKM. Stiffness of each mechanism is defined by summation of actuator and structural stiffness; the actuator stiffness is determined from displacements of actuators, and the structural stiffness is determined from deformations of links by external forces. Calculated actuator and structural stiffness of non-redundant PKM show same distribution in entire workspace. On the contrary, the actuator and the structural stiffness of a redundant PKM has very different distribution in the workspace; so, we conclude the structural stiffness of redundant PKM should be considered to design the redundant PKM. The results can be used to design and analyze non-redundant and redundant PKMs.

  • In this paper, it was presented an investigation on the load-settlement and vertical stress analysis of the ring footings on the loose sand bed by conducting both laboratory model tests and numerical analyses. A total of twenty tests were conducted in geotechnical laboratory and numerical analyses of the test models were carried out using the finite element package Plaxis 3D to find the ultimate capacities of the ring footings. Moreover, the results obtained from both foregoing methods were compared with theoretical results given in the literature. The effects of the ring width on bearing capacity of the footings and vertical stresses along the depth were investigated. Consequently, the experimental observations are in a very good agreement with the numerical and theoretical results. The variation in the bearing capacity is little when $r_i/R_o$ <0.3. That means, when the ring width ratio, $r_i/R_o$, is equal to 0.3, this option can provide more economic solutions in the applications of the ring footings. Since, this corresponds to less concrete consumption in the ring footing design.

  • The purpose of this paper is to analyze the buckling characteristics of rigidly-jointed single-layer latticed domes with square network by using the experimental and the theoretical techniques in order to develop a reasonable method of theoretical analysis for these domes. Two methods of theoretical analysis are applied; one is based on the Yamada's method of shell analogy and the other is based on the frame analysis method using the finite element method. The effects of the nonuniformity of rigidity-distribution in the circumferential direction and the rigidity of the covering material on both the prebuckling and the buckling characteristics are examined. The results indicate that these effects should be considered reasonably in the theoretical analyses.

  • This paper presents a detailed theoretical study of the sleeved compression members based on a mechanical model. In the mechanical model, the core protrusion above sleeve and the contact force between the core and sleeve are specially taken into account. Via the theoretical analyses, load-displacement relationships of the sleeved compression members are obtained and verified by the experimental results. On the basis of the core moment distribution changing with the increase of the applied axial load, failure mechanism of the sleeved compression members is assumed and proved to be consistent with the experimental results in terms of the failure modes and the ultimate bearing capacities. A parametric study is conducted to quantify how essential factors including the core protrusion length above sleeve, stiffness ratio of the core to sleeve, core slenderness ratio and gap between the core and sleeve affect the mechanical behaviors of the sleeved compression members, and it is concluded that the constrained effect of the sleeve is overestimated neglecting the core protrusion; the improvement of ultimate bearing capacity for the sleeved compression member is considered to be decreasing with the decrease of the core slenderness ratio and for the sleeved compression member with core of small slenderness ratio, small gap and small stiffness ratio are preferred to obtain larger ultimate bearing capacity and stiffness.

  • This paper deals with the problems of information retrieval through full-test database which arise from both the deficiency of searching strategies or methods by information searcher and the difficulties of query representation, generation, extension, etc. In oder to solve these problems, we should use automatic retrieval instead of manual retrieval in the past. One of the ways to make the gap narrow between the terms by the writers and query by the searchers is that the query should be searched with the terms which the writers use. Thus, the preconditions which should be taken one accorded way to solve the problems are that all areas of information retrieval such as should taken one accorded way to solve the problems are that all areas of information retrieval such as contents analysis, information structure, query formation, query evaluation, etc. should be solved as a coherence way. We need to deal all the ares of automatic information retrieval for the efficiency of retrieval thought this paper is trying to solve the design of thesaurus browser. Thus, this paper shows the theoretical analyses about the form of information retrieval, automatic indexing, clustering technique, establishing and expressing thesaurus, and information retrieval technique. As the result of analyzing them, this paper shows us theoretical model, that is to say, the thesaurus browser by clustering algorithm. The result in the paper will be a theoretical basis on new retrieval algorithm.
