Researches in text categorization have been confined to whole-document-level classification, probably due to lacks of full-text test collections. However, full-length documents availably today in large quantities pose renewed interests in text classification. A document is usually written in an organized structure to present its main topic(s). This structure can be expressed as a sequence of sub-topic text blocks, or passages. In order to reflect the sub-topic structure of a document, we propose a new passage-level or passage-based text categorization model, which segments a test document into several Passages, assigns categories to each passage, and merges passage categories to document categories. Compared with traditional document-level categorization, two additional steps, passage splitting and category merging, are required in this model. By using four subsets of Routers text categorization test collection and a full-text test collection of which documents are varying from tens of kilobytes to hundreds, we evaluated the proposed model, especially the effectiveness of various passage types and the importance of passage location in category merging. Our results show simple windows are best for all test collections tested in these experiments. We also found that passages have different degrees of contribution to main topic(s), depending on their location in the test document.

Although deep learning methods of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and long-/short-term memory (LSTM) are widely used for text categorization, they still have certain shortcomings. CNNs require that the text retain some order, that the pooling lengths be identical, and that collateral analysis is impossible; In case of LSTM, it requires the unidirectional operation and the inputs/outputs are very complex. Against these problems, we thus improved these traditional deep learning methods in the following ways: We created collateral CNNs accepting disorder and variable-length pooling, and we removed the input/output gates when creating bidirectional LSTMs. We have used four benchmark datasets for topic and sentiment classification using the new methods that we propose. The best results were obtained by combining LTSM regional embeddings with data convolution. Our method is better than all previous methods (including deep learning methods) in terms of topic and sentiment classification.
Automatic text categorization is a problem of assigning predefined categories to free text documents. In order to classify text documents, we have to extract good features from them. In previous researches, a text document is commonly represented by the frequency of each feature. But there is a difference between important and unimportant sentences in a text document. It has an effect on the importance of features in a text document. In this paper, we measure the importance of sentences in a text document using text summarizing techniques. A text document is represented by features with different weights according to the importance of each sentence. To verify the new method, we constructed Korean news group data set and experiment our method using it. We found that our new method gale a significant improvement over a basis system for our data sets.
When we apply binary classification to multi-class classification for text categorization, we use the One-Against-All method generally, However, this One-Against-All method has a problem. That is, documents of a negative set are not labeled by human. Thus, they can include many noisy documents in the training data. In this paper, we propose that the Sliding Window technique and the EM algorithm are applied to binary text classification for solving this problem. We here improve binary text classification through extracting noise documents from the training data by the Sliding Window technique and re-assigning categories of these documents using the EM algorithm.

In text categorization, core terms of an input document are hardly selected as classification features if they do not occur in a training document set. Besides, synonymous terms with the same concept are usually treated as different features. This study aims to improve text categorization performance by integrating synonyms into a single feature and by replacing input terms not in the training document set with the most similar term occurring in training documents using Wikipedia. For the selection of classification features, experiments were performed in various settings composed of three different conditions: the use of category information of non-training terms, the part of Wikipedia used for measuring term-term similarity, and the type of similarity measures. The categorization performance of a kNN classifier was improved by 0.35~1.85% in $F_1$ value in all the experimental settings when non-learning terms were replaced by the learning term with the highest similarity above the threshold value. Although the improvement ratio is not as high as expected, several semantic as well as structural devices of Wikipedia could be used for selecting more effective classification features.

본 논문에서는 개념을 기반으로 문서의 분류를 하는 확률벡터 모델의 분류기TAXON(Concept-based Text Categorization System)의 개선을 도모한다.
This article proposes the modified KNN (K Nearest Neighbor) algorithm which considers the feature similarity and is applied to the word categorization. The texts which are given as features for encoding words into numerical vectors are semantic related entities, rather than independent ones, and the synergy effect between the word categorization and the text categorization is expected by combining both of them with each other. In this research, we define the similarity metric between two vectors, including the feature similarity, modify the KNN algorithm by replacing the exiting similarity metric by the proposed one, and apply it to the word categorization. The proposed KNN is empirically validated as the better approach in categorizing words in news articles and opinions. The significance of this research is to improve the classification performance by utilizing the feature similarities.
In this study, the way of the automatic text categorization on web-based query was implemented. X2 methods based on the Supported Vector Machine were used to test the efficiency of text categorization on queries. This test is carried out by the model using the Synonymy List. 713 synonyms were extracted manually from the tested documents. As the result of this test, the precision ratio and the recall ratio were decreased by -0.01% and by 8.53%, respectively whether the synonyms were assigned or not. It also shows that the Value of F1 Measure was increased by 4.58%. The standard deviation between the recall and precision ratio was improve by 18.39%.

This study experimented the performance of categorization methods using the kNN classifier. Most sample based automatic text categorization techniques like the kNN classifier reduces the feature set of the training documents. We sought to find out which percentage reductions in the feature set would result in high performances. In addition, the kNN classifier has to find the k number of training documents most similar to the test documents in the training documents. We sought to verify the most appropriate k value through experiments.
