  • This paper is motivated by Watanabe's (2001) observation that English byphrase passives are sometimes translated into Japanese object topicalization constructions. That is, the original English sentence in the passive may be translated into the active voice with the logical object topicalized. A number of scholars, including Chomsky (1981) and Baker (1992), have remarked that languages have various ways to avoid focusing on the logical subject. The aim of the present study is to examine the translation equivalents of the English by-phrase passives in an English-Korean parallel corpus compiled by the author. A small sample of articles from Newsweek magazine and its published Korean translation reveals that there are indeed many ways to translate English by-phrase passives, including object topicalization (12.5%). Among the 64 translated sentences analyzed and classified, 12 (18.8%) examples were problematic in terms of agent defocusing, which is the primary function of passives. Of these 12 instances, five cases were identified where an alternative translation would be more suitable. The results suggest that the functional characteristics of English by-phrase passives should be highlighted in translator training as well as language teaching.

  • Dream Girl. which was written to entertain. reflects his concern of psychoanalysis. The play does indeed glow with the happiness surrounding its creation and it is a theatrically astute. deftly crafted comedy. If it has a thesis, it is that one should live one's life and not dream away. Some critics say that Dream Girl is the merriest and the other critics bewail the lack of message. But this play does amuse many people and is a nice fusion of realism, expressionism, and entertainment.

  • In this paper, I explain why local obviation (Condition B of Chomskys binding theory) should be viewed as a relative phenomenon, and establish a correlation between Local Obviation (henceforth LO) effects and the Referential Hierarchy of Korean anaphors proposed in Lee (1997): ku (he) > caki (self) > casin (self) > cakicasin (selfself) = selo (each other). I show that LO characterized as a relative phenomenon may enable us to view Conditions B and C of the binding theory simply as an instantiation of varying degrees of (long distance) disjoint reference effects on the same continuum.

  • The computer technology and internet have the potential to provide a highly interactive and powerful learning environment for engineering disciplines. Many academic courses that teach engineering subjects have already begun incorporating virtual instruments as teaching and learning tools. This paper introduces the concept of the virtual instrument and reports some of the LabVIEW software applications in several universities. Finally the paper contemplates the future trends on the remote laboratory via the internet for engineering education.

  • This paper attempts to investigate characteristic features of Japanese EFL learners' English intonation and how their Japanese accents are affecting their English intonation, focusing on a comparison between the accent patterns of Japanese compounds and the stress patterns of English compounds. It is based on research dedicated to helping to improve the teaching and learning of English intonation (prosody) for Japanese EFL learners. It examines the Fundamental Frequency (henceforth Fx) contours of two EFL college students, one specializing in English and the other in Japanese. Both of them may be considered upper intermediate EFL students with their TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) scores ranging between 500 and 550.

  • Some Korean speakers have trouble in learning the correct pronunciation of many complex English words which have clusters in their onset and coda position. This study shows that the difficulties Korean students have acquiring English pronunciation partly come from syllable structure differences between English and Korean. We provide an analysis based on Optimality Theory (Prince and Smolensky 1993) of the syllable structure difference and suggest that Korean speakers learn the different constraint ranking between English and Korean. This will offer Korean speakers with some helpful methods which will facilitate their learning.

  • The purpose of this paper is to show that when we consider the analytical ways of Dissimilation, it becomes clear that it is insufficient to deal with it in just linear and nonlinear ways. Thus within a new framework to be introduced in this paper, Harmonic Phonology, we will reanalyze the phenomenon. We will also consider how the Obligatory Contour Principle (hereinafter, OCP) is used as both rule trigger and rule blocker in rule application, and works as a universal constraint, that is, a filtering device of ill formed representation. As we also consider it under the new framework, we can show the application position and motivation of rules appropriately and represent the phenomenon synthetically. (Yosu National University)

  • This paper aims to describe the theme of English clause in terms of systemic grammar. For this I analyze the three subaereas of subject theme and the four subareas of nonsubject theme in the form of features. Each of the seven feature sets of the seven thematic subareas is described in the systemic model. Finally All of the subsystems are described in the framework of the system network in order to show the potential of options of thematic English clause available in a certain situation.
