This study attempts to enhance the research quality and the desirable direction of Home Economics Education research in Korea. based upon the analyses of the articles appeared in The Journal of Korea Home Economics Education published by The Korea Home Economics Education Association since 1989. Total number of 142 articles were collected for analysis from the number 1 of volume 1 in 1989 to the number 2 of volume 10 in 1998 of the journal. The major findings by each factors considered in analysis are as follows : 1. Total numbers have been 15 volume for the last 10 years. and published bi-annually. and the size of the article ranges from minimum 7 pages to maximum 46 pages. 2. Among 9 major fields or research. 3 major fields consist of I) 32 articles in the perception of Home Economics(22.54%) : ⅱ) 31 articles in teaching-learning method and teaching materials(21.83%) : and ⅲ)22 articles in curriculum and textbooks(15.49%). 3. Among various types of research. survey research was the most frequently used. 91 articles(64.08%). followed by 16 experimental researches(11.27%) and others of descriptive research. content analysis. and case study. 4. The major data collecting method was the questionnaire survey method of 87 articles(61.27%). followed by the interview. braining storming. and experiment. The major data analysis technique was the statistical analysis of 118 articles. 5. The major target groups for data collection of researches were teacher of junior and high school. followed by the student. The size of the target ranges from 101 to 200 of 12.04% from 201 to 300 of 11.11%. 501 to 600 of 9.26%. and over 1.000 of 6.48%. 6. The numbers of researchers consist of roughly between 1 to 7. Among them. articles by one individual was 35 articles(24.65%). Most studies were not financially supported by ant institutions and universities and the researches with outside financial support were counted only 14 articles(9.86%).
The purpose of this study was to investigate how prospective elementary school teachers perceived teacher's inquiryoriented teaching practice, with an emphasis on students' scientific explanations based on scientific evidence. For this study, 94 prospective elementary school teachers were participated. 14 among 94 participants had chances to intensively experience this particular teaching methods for 15 weeks. All of the 94 participants observed the intended science teaching practice for 4th graders in two different elementary schools, which utilized the science talks emphasizing students' scientific explanation activity. For quantitative data analysis, they were asked to provide their reaction to the science teaching methods after their classroom observation. For qualitative data analysis, 5 among the participants, who had relatively long term experience with this teaching practice, were chosen to interview in order to understand their individual reasons of the ways they perceived about the inquiry-oriented teaching methods boosting students' scientific explanation. The results show that the prospective elementary teachers generally thought the emphasis of students' scientific explanation based on scientific evidence could enhance young elementary students' science content understanding, stimulate their curiosity/interests, and further develop their ability to engage actively in scientific discussions. However, some prospective teachers tended to think that the science teaching. methods would not be effective in terms of managing science classes, though. This study concludes that the prospective teachers tended to hold an endemic dilemma. On the one hand, they had their clear preference to the inquiry-oriented teaching practice as the most ideal teaching methods. On the other hand, they also had their persistent hesitance in using these methods due to their fear that elementary students might not adequately grasp the important science content when engaged in scientific discourse through an inquiry-oriented class.
The purpose of this study was to develop a test of a creative problem solving (CPS) for the selection of gifted science students in elementary school. For this, the methods and procedures of the selection of gifted science students was investigated through the internet homepages 23 gifted science education centers of universities and 16 city. province offices of education. The results of this study were as follows: Most of the gifted science students were selected through a multi-step examination process. They were selected on the basis of their records by recommendation of a principal or a classroom teacher in their school, by operation of standardized tests (ex. intelligence quotient score, achievements in science and mathematics, interest and attitude/aptitude for science as well as through other means), as well as through intensive observation of those gifted science students who are selected by interview and oral tests. The selection of gifted students was not evaluated through creativity testing; giftedness in city. province office of education. Testing of CPS was found to be especially lacking in these organizations. For the development of the test items of CPS in science, the five elements were extracted through the framework for the content analysis of the CPS: problem exploration, problem statement, solution thinking, experiment design, and assesment. In addition, suggestions were made regarding an appropriate scoring system for the test of the CPS. As the result of the developed test was applied to the 4th grade of the gifted and general student, we found that gifted students were superior to general students. In conclusion, it was that the CPS test developed in this study should be used to evaluate the CPS for the selection of gifted students.
This study investigated how the unique educational contexts in the Republic of Korea (RK) impacted two science teachers' teaching practices in a public middle school and what the science teaching experience means to them. In particular, we explored how the middle school science teachers decide pedagogical approaches to use in their teaching based on classroom climate, students' attitude toward learning science, school curriculum and classroom culture. Using a phenomenological research approach, we analyzed classroom observation data and interview data to interpret the teachers' science teaching experience. Results of the study showed that the teachers' practice was dominantly affected by two external factors. First, the teachers' teaching practice was affected by the amount of science content knowledge they need to cover within a given class time. Second, the teachers' teaching practice was affected by students' attitudes toward science learning and their science preparedness in private tutoring centers. Implications of the study results are discussed in the paper.
How to enhance the ability of underachieve students are unsolved problems for mathematics teachers despite of their best efforts to teach them. The purpose of this study is to explore the effectiveness of mathematical journal writing as a method of improving the mathematical attitudes and achievements for underachieve students. Seven students whose performances were below 40% on the final exam in the 1st semester were recruited in order to gather empirical data. Before journal writing procedures, the subjects' characteristics, learning styles and mathematical attitudes were investigated through personal interview and mathematical attitude test. After six-week journal writing, follow-up survey and mathematical attitude test were conducted. The results of this research are as follows: Mathematical journal writing had a positive effect to underachieve students on improving confidence in mathematics and a positive influence on active and effective learning attitude. And mathematical journal writing had an effect on improvement in their mathematics achievement comparing first semester's final exam with second semester's mid-term exam. Finally mathematical journal writing contributes positively to the relationship between students and their teacher.
This study examined students' menu preferences as well as the job satisfaction and specific considerations concerning foodservice operation of dieticians and nutrition teachers at special schools for the disabled. Semi-structured interview questionnaires were sent to all of the 21 special schools with direct school food service in Gyeonggi-do, and 16 dieticians and nutrition teachers agreed to participate in this study. Among the various menu groups, the subjects perceived the meat group as the most preferred and the vegetable group the least preferred. They were generally satisfactory with their job and duty, and had a strong sense of belonging to the school. However, most of them answered that they needed more time for nutritional education and counseling. While most had pride and pleasure in their job, they expressed a desire to change the system to better fit with their roles as professional nutritionists. The content analysis revealed that the subjects mainly focused on safety issues in planning the food menu and were thus limited in selecting menu items. They also felt difficulty in menu planning due to various tastes and preferences, since special schools tend to consist of a wider grade range. However, most subjects reported little trouble in food distribution and food leftovers owing to practical support from teachers and parents. The necessity for education concerning table manners and obesity prevention was generally a shared opinion, and education programs for parents were also perceived as necessary to better understand the special considerations for developing proper eating habits in their child. The study findings provide useful basic data to improve the foodservice system at special schools.
This study tried to investigate whether it is appropriate to define the emotions of elementary school teachers, who avoid teaching science, as science teaching anxiety through exploring elementary school teachers' emotional expressions and related factors. 10 elementary school teachers who were reluctant to teach science participated in the research, and they presented their thoughts and feelings about teaching science through semi-structured interviews. As a result of analyzing the emotional expressions in the interview, 28 expressions of emotions appeared. Emotional expressions were divided into three types according to the degree of inclusion of factors related to anticipation in related situations. These results show that there are some emotional expressions that cannot be interpreted as the science teaching anxiety. Therefore, we propose to consider science teaching avoidance emotion not as science teaching anxiety but as a mixture of various emotions.
The purpose of this study is to explore the strategies for application of e-portfolio for improving teaching efficacy of pre-service teachers. 35 pre-service teachers wrote reflection papers and uploaded their data to their personal e-portfolio during 10 weeks. They participated in two teaching efficacy surveys which were conducted before and after using e-portfolio. Twelve participants were interviewed regarding their experience and perceptions of e-portfolio. As the result of compared-sample tests, teaching efficacy increased statistically significantly. According to the students' interview, the pros and cons of e-portfolio were identified and the strategies for application of e-portfolio were suggested for improving teaching efficacy of pre-service teachers.
Knowledge and data interpretation on statistical estimation was important to have statistical literacy that current curriculum was said not to satisfy. The author investigated mathematics teachers' MKT on statistical estimation concerning interpretation of confidence interval by using questionnaire and interview. SMK of teachers' confidence was limited to the area of textbooks to be difficult to interpret data of real life context. Most of teachers wrongly understood SMK of interpretation of confidence interval to have influence upon PCK making correction of students' wrong concept. SMK of samples and sampling distribution that were basic concept of reliability and confidence interval cognized representation of samples rather exactly not to understand importance and value of not only variability but also size of the sample exactly, and not to cognize appropriateness and needs of each stage from sampling to confidence interval estimation to have great difficulty at proper teaching of statistical estimation. PCK that had teaching method had problem of a lot of misconception. MKT of sample and sampling distribution that interpreted confidence interval had almost no relation with teachers' experience to require opportunity for development of teacher professionalism. Therefore, teachers were asked to estimate statistic and to get confidence interval and to understand concept of the sample and think much of not only relationship of each concept but also validity of estimated values, and to have knowledge enough to interpret data of real life contexts, and to think and discuss students' concepts. So, textbooks should introduce actual concepts at real life context to make use of exact orthography and to let teachers be reeducated for development of professionalism.

The purpose of this study was to find the relationship between elementary school teachers' beliefs of inquiry and science performance assessment. To collect data for analyzing elementary school teachers' beliefs of inquiry and their practice of science performance assessment, the researcher was surveyed with elementary school teachers by open-ended questionnaires and interview. The findings of this study were as follows; First, Most of elementary school teachers beliefs of inquiry was shown as constructivist tendency. This view of inquiry involves watching and doing experiments, and the skills of thinking processes, in which learners make their own interpretations rather than merely acquiring preexisting knowledge structures. Second, for content knowledge, participants' preception about the target of science performance assessment involved assessing application of science knowledge rather than basic level of substantive knowledge. For inquiry process, participants' preception about the target of science performance assessment involved assessing the lower level of inquiry rather than the higher level of inquiry. Most of participants was measured using a paper and pencil test for the actual evaluation methods due to the ease and objectivity of the assessment, the lack of understanding how to perform the performance evaluation process and method. Especially, participants who recognize that the higher level of inquiry was used performance and informal mode of assessing.
