  • Data mining is the process of finding and analyzing data from a big database and summarizing it into useful information for a decision-making. A variety of data mining techniques have been being used for wide range of industries. One application of those is especially so for gathering meaningful information from process data in manufacturing factories for quality improvement. The purpose of this paper is to provide a methodology to improve manufacturing quality of fuel tanks which are auto-parts. The methodology is to analyse influential attributes and establish a model for optimal manufacturing condition of fuel tanks to improve the quality using decision tree, association rule, and feature selection.

  • This paper compares the performance of JP-8(Jet Propellant) fuel and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and natural gas in the F110 GE100 jet engine. The cost of natural gas usage in gas turbine engines is lower than JP-8 and LPG. LPG cost is more than JP-8. LPG volume is bigger than JP-8 in the same flight conditions. Fuel tank should be cryogenic for using natural gas in the aircraft. Cost and weight of the cryogenic tanks are bigger. Cryogenic tanks decrease the move capability of the aircraft. The use of jet propellant (JP) is the best in available application for F110 GE 100 jet engine.

A Nonsymmetric Model of Directional Probability Variation [DPV] for Tanks (전차동체의 피탄각 결정을 위한 비대칭 방향확률분포 모델)

  • In this study, a nonsymmetric model of directional probability variation (dpv), which is fundamental and conforms well to various moving situations of attacking tanks, is obtained based on the Whittaker's theory. It is shown that it produces the same expression of the probability density function as the Whittaker's under the special moving condition of an attacking tank. Using the derived dpvs, the probability densities for the various cases of some examples are calculated numerically to verify the derived formulas, and compared with other existing symmetrical distributions widely used to grasp characteristics of them. As a result, it is noted that the plots of the probability density function for various cases selected exhibit very different and useful behavioral features. Applying the results with respect to the every tank in the computer simulation of engagement between two tank forces, it is expected that more reasonable shot distributions can be given comparing with other existing symmetrical ones. The derived dpvs may be utilized to decide shot distribution of other weapon systems through small modification.

  • In this paper, we constructed the advanced cargo monitoring system for liquid cargo tankers which embedded the Decision Support System (DSS) based on the International Ship Management Code (ISM Code). To make this system, we first organized a base of expert's knowledge concerning liquid tanker operations that largely affect ocean accidents. We can find out the knowledge via inference method which simply imitates the fuzzy inference method. Based on this expert's knowledge, we constructed the DSS that provides a code of conduct for operating cargo tanks safely. The proposed monitoring system could eliminate human error when confronting dangerous situations, so the system will help sailors to operate cargo tanks safely.

Metabolic Fingerprinting of Food Wastewater Treatment System (식품폐수 처리 단계별 미생물 대사지문)

  • To determine structure and activities of microbial communities in a food wastewater treatment system, biofilm of RABC (rotating activated Bacillus contactor) and samples of aeration tanks were analyzed. Heterotrophic bacterial concentrations were similar between biofilm and stage 1 aeration tank and decreased 2-log at stage 3 aeration tank as dissolved oxygen decreased, however portions of Bacillus groups were increased at stage 3 aeration tank. It was revealed by quantitative and qualitative analysis of metabolic fingerprinting patterns of Biolog GN2 plate that RABC represented much higher activities and a different microbial community structure compared to aeration tanks. Metabolic fingerprinting showed the carbon sources that isolated Bacillus groups could or could not use, were used similarly meaning that not only Bacillus groups but also other microbial groups would contribute to the treatment of wastewater.

  • Fuel-storage tank is a representative example of liquid-structure interaction systems. In order to prevent the undesired structural failure by a variety of external loads, the reliable analysis of the dynamic response of such structural system is of a great importance. In this paper, we address the analytical study on free vibration of axisymmetric cylindrical fuel-storage tanks together with the parametric investigation of eigen-characteristics with respect to the relative fuel fill-height and the relative tank height. Numerical results illustrating theoretical results are also included.

  • In this study a base-isolated liquid storage tank subjected to seismic ground motion is numerically simulated on frequency , domain considering three-dimensional liquid-structure-soil interaction. A hybrid formulation which combines the versatility of finite elements for tank structure and the efficiency of boundary elements for liquid and soil region is adopted for efficient modeling. The base-isolation system using the effective stiffness and damping ratio is also included in this formulation. in order to demonstrate the accuracy and validity of the developed solution the numerical results were compared with the reference solutions in each interaction problem. The effects of the liquid filling ratio and the stiffness of base-isolation system on the behavior of the liquid storage tanks are analyzed.

  • The systematic results of anti-rolling tanks tests obtained by bench tester and roll test in towing tank have been examined. The effects on the oscillating period of fluid transfer through the duct of U-tube tank due to damper plates and the effects on roll damping moment of the tank due to swash plates are alto evaluated from the results. A simple control algorithm for a forced fluid transfer in U-tube tanks if devised to active operation of the tank by air blower. The active performances of the tank are confirmed very effective through the tank tests carried out in the irregular waves.

Probabilistic estimates of corrosion rate of fuel tank structures of aging bulk carriers

  • This paper considers corrosion wastage of two ship hull structure members as a part of investigated fuel oil tanks of 25 aging bulk carriers. Taking into account that many factors which influence corrosion wastage of ship hull structures are of uncertain nature, the related corrosion rate ($c_1$) is considered here as a real-valued continuous distribution, assuming that the corrosion wastage starts after 5, 6 or 7 years. In all considered cases, by using available data and applying three basic statistical tests, it is established that between two-parameter continuous distributions, normal, Weibull and logistic distributions are best fitted distributions for the mentioned corrosion rate ($c_1$). Note that the presented statistical, numerical and graphical results concerning two mentioned ship hull structure members allow to compare and discuss the corresponding probabilistic estimates for the corrosion rate ($c_1$).

  • In liquid hydrogen storage tanks, tank damage or leakage in the surrounding pipes possess a major risk. Since these tanks store huge amounts of the fluid among all the liquid hydrogen process facilities, there is a high risk of leakage-related accidents. Therefore, in this study, we conducted a risk assessment of liquid hydrogen leakage for a grid-type liquid hydrogen storage tank (lattice-type pressure vessel (LPV): 18 m3) that overcame the low space efficiency of the existing pressure vessel shape. Through a commercially developed three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics program, the geometry of the site, where the liquid hydrogen storage tank will be installed, was obtained and simulations of the leakage scenarios for each situation were performed. From the computational flow analysis results, the pool formation behavior in the event of liquid hydrogen leakage was identified, and the resulting damage range was predicted.
