  • In this study, we proposed a specification which is able to estimate tile uncertainty more easily and quickly and also able to maintain a confidence level when measuring tile magnitude and phase of 1-port and 2-port transmission.reflection coefficient using a VNA and attached coaxial cable probes. This proposed specification is available when it needs extra special condition of uncertainty estimation and when there is no additional standard equipment like as beadless airline or mismatch standard at the measurement institute. We compared and examined this proposed uncertainty estimation method with recommended EA specification and Agilent specification. As a result, we think that this proposed specification can be used as a reference for uncertainty estimation and calculation of VNA system, that is, a reference based on the IS0/1EC 17025 requirements.

  • We developed a line standards measurement system using an optical microscope and measured two kinds of line standards. It consists of three main parts: an optical microscope module including a CCD camera, a stage system with a linear encoder, and a measurement program for a microscopic image processing. The magnification of microscope part was calibrated using one-dimensional gratings and the angular motion of stage was measured to estimate the Abbe error. The threshold level in line width measurement was determined by comparing with certified values of a line width reference specimen, and its validity was proved through the measurement of another line width specimen. The expanded uncertainty (k=2) was about 100 nm in the measurements of $1{\mu}m{\sim}10{\mu}m$ line width. In the comparison results of line spacing measurement, two kinds of values were coincide within the expanded uncertainty, which were obtained by the one-dimensional measuring machine in KRISS and the line standards measurement system. The expanded uncertainty (k=2) in the line spacing measurement was estimated as $\sqrt{(0.098{\mu}m)^2+(1.8{\times}10^{-4}{\times}L)^2}$. Therefore, it will be applied effectively to the calibration of line standards, such as line width and line spacing, with the expanded uncertainty of several hundreds nanometer.

  • There can be included a variety of uncertainties in all measurement results whether we can perceive or not on the causes. These uncertainties may end up in lowering the reliability of measurement results and also deteriorate the level of quality. For the purpose, we tried to combine the strengths of measurement uncertainty and measurement system analysis together to present a practical flowchart so as to verify those potential variation factors in general measurement processes. As a case study, we did an experiment and gathered data on the length between two holes of an engine cylinder head which is a core part for vehicles with a coordinate measuring machine and estimated nine uncertainty factors of it. Consequently, it was identified that the four primary factors among the nine which were related to the measurement standard, random errors or spread of the repeat measurements, differences between the coefficients of thermal expansion and the environment especially had been the influence around the laboratory. Since it is impossible to analyze the equipment and appraisal variations respectively through the only measurement uncertainty, we have used the measurement system analysis following the flowchart. Showing the result of being just about 0.5% lower for the appraisal variation, and the equipment variation occupied about 7% for the total Gage R&R. Through this research, we have come to a conclusion that much more detail analysis on variation factors can be possible to be identified in measurement processes by using the developed flowchart which is composed of measurement uncertainty and measurement system analysis. Therefore, we expect engineers who are involved in quality and measurements to utilize this developed method.

  • In this study, a DeCART/MIG uncertainty quantification (UQ) analysis code system with a multicorrelated cross section stochastic sampling (S.S.) module was established and verified through the UAM (Uncertainty Analysis in Modeling) and the BEAVRS (Benchmark for Evaluation And Validation of Reactor Simulations) benchmark calculations. For the S.S. calculations, a sample of 500 DeCART multigroup cross section sets for two major actinides, i.e., 235U and 238U, were generated by the MIG code and covariance data from the ENDF/B-VII.1 evaluated nuclear data library. In the three pin problems (i.e. TMI-1, PB2, and Koz-6) from the UAM benchmark, the uncertainties in kinf by the DeCART/MIG S.S. calculations agreed very well with the sensitivity and uncertainty (S/U) perturbation results by DeCART/MUSAD and the S/U direct subtraction (S/U-DS) results by the DeCART/MIG. From these results, it was concluded that the multi-group cross section sampling module of the MIG code works correctly and accurately. In the BEAVRS whole benchmark problems, the uncertainties in the control rod bank worth, isothermal temperature coefficient, power distribution, and critical boron concentration due to cross section uncertainties were calculated by the DeCART/MIG code system. Overall, the uncertainties in these design parameters were less than the general design review criteria of a typical pressurized water reactor start-up case. This newly-developed DeCART/MIG UQ analysis code system by the S.S. method can be widely utilized as uncertainty analysis and margin estimation tools for developing and designing new advanced nuclear reactors.

  • In this paper, we deal with the stability condition of linear time-varying interval discrete systems with time-varying delays and unstructured uncertainty. For the time-varying interval discrete system which has interval matrix as its system matrices, time-varying delay time within some interval value and unstructured uncertainty which can include non-linearity and be expressed by only its magnitude, the stability condition is proposed. Compared with the previous result derived by using a upper bound solution of the Lyapunov equation, the new result is derived by the form of simple inequality based on Lyapunov stability condition and has the advantage of being more effective in checking stability. Furthermore, the proposed condition is very comprehensive, powerful and inclusive the previously published conditions of various linear discrete systems, and can be expressed by the terms of magnitudes of the time-varying delay time and uncertainty, and bounds of interval matrices. The superiority of the new condition is shown in the derivation, and the usefulness and advantage of the proposed condition are examined through numerical example.

  • Objectives: Risk assessment is a tool for predicting and reducing uncertainty related to the effects of future activities. Probability approaches are the main elements in risk assessment, but confusion about the interpretation and use of assessment factors often undermines the message of the analyses. The aim of this study is to provide a guideline for systematic reduction plans regarding uncertainty in risk assessment. Methods: Articles and reports were collected online using the key words "uncertainty analysis" on risk assessment. Uncertainty analysis was conducted based on reports focusing on procedures for analysis methods by the World Health Organization (WHO) and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). In addition, case studies were performed in order to verify suggested methods qualitatively and quantitatively with exposure data, including measured data on toluene and styrene in residential spaces and multi-use facilities. Results: Based on an analysis of the data on uncertainty, three major factors including scenario, model, and parameters were identified as the main sources of uncertainty, and tiered approaches were determined. In the case study, the risk of toluene and styrene was evaluated and the most influential factors were also determined. Five reduction plans were presented: providing standard guidelines, using reliable exposure factors, possessing quality controls for analysis and scientific expertise, and introducing a peer review system. Conclusion: In this study, we established a method for reducing uncertainty by taking into account the major factors. Also, we showed a method for uncertainty analysis with tiered approaches. However, uncertainties are difficult to define because they are generated by many factors. Therefore, further studies are needed for the development of technical guidelines based on the representative scenario, model, and parameters developed in this study.

  • The uncertainties generated by measurement parameters are propagated to the uncertainty of total-to-total efficiency on an experiment. The effect of uncertainties’ propagation are analyzed through a turbine performance test. A tested 3-D axial type turbine has a 0.373 degree of reaction at the mean radius and the performance test is conducted at the low pressure and cold temperature status. The uncertainty of turbine inlet and exit total pressure shows the strong propagation effect to the uncertainty of total-to-total efficiency. This means that a high precision pressure measuring system is required to reduce the uncertainty propagated by the pressure. In the uncertainty portion of each measurement parameters to the uncertainty of total-to-total efficiency, the uncertainty by torque is the highest and the uncertainty by RPM is the lowest. In case of the total pressure, the effect of the uncertainty by torque is increased with the increasing RPM. The uncertainty of total pressure at the turbine exit shows more influence to the results than that at the turbine.

  • The synchronous reluctance motor (SynRM) servo-drive system has highly nonlinear uncertainties owing to a convex construction effect. It is difficult for the linear control method to achieve good performance for the SynRM drive system. The nonlinear backstepping control system using upper bound with switching function is proposed to inhibit uncertainty action for controlling the SynRM drive system. However, this method uses a large upper bound with a switching function, which results in a large chattering. In order to reduce this chattering, a nonlinear backstepping control system using an adaptive law is proposed to estimate the lumped uncertainty. Since this method uses an adaptive law, it cannot achiever satisfactory performance. Therefore, a nonlinear backstepping control system using a reformed recurrent Hermite polynomial neural network with an adaptive law and an error estimated law is proposed to estimate the lumped uncertainty and to compensate the estimated error in order to enhance the robustness of the SynRM drive system. Further, the reformed recurrent Hermite polynomial neural network with two learning rates is derived according to an increment type Lyapunov function to speed-up the parameter convergence. Finally, some experimental results and a comparative analysis are presented to verify that the proposed control system has better control performance for controlling SynRM drive systems.

  • We consider the robust control problem for nonminimum phase(NMP) systems with parametric uncertainty which appear often in aircraft and missile control. First, a new method that makes such an uncertain NMP system to be factored as a interval minimum phase(MP) transfer function and a time delay term in the Pade approximation form has been presented. The controller to be proposed consists of a compensator $C_{Q}$(s) with Smith predictor in the internal model control(IMC) structure, so that it can have good robustness and performance against the structured uncertainty and the time delay behaviour due to NMP plant the $C_{Q}$(s) is designed on the MP model by using QFT. The stability and performance of overall system has been evaluated by the generalized Kharitonov theorem.rem.

  • This paper deals with the problem of robust TDF(Two Degree of Freedom) H$_{\infty}$ control design for a linear system with parameter uncertainty in the state space model. The uncertain system considered here is with the time-invariant norm-bounded parameter uncertainty in the state matrix. A TDF H$_{\infty}$ control design is presented which robustly stabilizes the plant, guarantees the robust H$_{\infty}$ performance and improves the tracking performance for the closed-loop system in the face of parameter uncertainty. It is shwon that a suitable stabilizing control law can be constructed in terms of a positive definite solution to a certain parameter-dependent algebraic Riccati equation and a good tracking performance can be constructed in terms of suitable feedforward control law.aw.
