Some of the mariculture grounds near Ongjin-gun, Korea, were designated as mariculture management areas in 2007. Areas are so designated when the environmental quality of the mariculture ground deteriorates or there is an outbreak of hypoxia or harmful red tide that kills mariculture organisms. We surveyed the water and sediment quality and examined the mortality of mariculture organisms in the Ongjin-gun mariculture area. In a survey conducted in 2016, the water quality was better than the environmental quality standards for mariculture grounds, excepts for dissolved inorganic nitrogen, and the sediment quality was good. However, there was still mortality of mariculture organisms in some of the designated management areas. The areas that met the environmental quality standards should be delisted and the areas in which we observed mortality should be classified as management areas. This will enable the sustainable development of aquaculture and preserve healthy mariculture grounds.

Corbicula japonica, belonging to Other Veneroida Family Corbiculidae, was distributed in the freshwater and brackish rivers, where was a sandy and shallow depth. Catch of C. japonica in the Seomjin River occupied at a large portion of the catch in Kyungnam Province, which was about 30% of total catch in Korea. C. japonica has little studied on biomass, scientific resources assessment and management, because of inaccurate catch report data in the Seojin River. In this study, we conducted scientific and systematic approaches under data limited situation with application of the potential fishery yield system for sustainable fisheries resources management. Estimation system of the potential fishery yield was consisted of 5 tier system. We have used to tier 1 and 2 which were demanded higher level of information than the other tiers. The potential fishery yields were estimated 77.66ton for tier 1 using commercial fishery-dependent data, and 129.82ton for tier 2 with fishery-independent survey data.
We estimated the population size and fishing mortality of Pacific cod Gadus macrocephalus during the spawning season in waters off Woipo, Geoje Island, Korea, using a mark-recapture method. We marked and released 51 cod>50 cm in total length; six were recaptured by local fishermen during the period from December 15 to 31, 2009. The estimated population size was ca. 180,000 and the fishing mortality of the exploitable cod was 26%. Although we could assume a closed population due to the short survey period, we evaluated the uncertainty in the estimates by applying bootstrap resampling because the sample size was small. The estimated 95% confidence interval was 94,000-568,000 for the population size and 8-49% for fishing mortality. Our study demonstrated that the application of mark-recapture methods and bootstrap resampling can be useful in stock assessment for fisheries management in Korea, but requires a larger sample size, spatially extensive coverage, and sophisticated mark-recapture models based on a refined sampling design for reliable stock assessment and biological reference points in sustainable cod management.

This study aimed at finding directions for Korean agriculture to establish a new paradigm of sustainable development. Various problematic issues and concerns in the environment necessitate the transformation of Korea's development paradigm from unconditional growth to "Green Growth" through new policies on green value and review of various advanced researches. In this research, the environment-friendly agriculture's problems, particularly in agribusiness were analyzed. Drawing from Michael Porter's Value Chain Analysis, this research developed a value chain model in agriculture that reflects the environment and the present situations. Future directions in the agriculture sector were also discussed. Korea realized food self-sufficiency through the green revolution in the early 1970s. However, a lot of problems have also occurred, including ground and water pollution and the destruction of ecosystems as a result of the overuse of pesticides and chemical fertilizers. In the late 1970s, the growing interest on environment-friendly agriculture led to the introduction of sustainable methods and techniques. Unfortunately however, these were not innovative enough to foster environment-friendly agriculture. Thereafter, the consumers' distrust on agricultural products has worsened and concerns about health have increased. In view of this, the Ministry of Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries introduced in December 1993 a system of Quality-Certified Products for organic and pesticide-free agri-foods. Although a fundamental step toward the sustainability of the global environment, this system was not enough to promote environment-friendly agriculture. In 2008, Korea's vision is for "Low Carbon Green Growth" to move forward while also coping with climate change. But primary sectors in a typical value chain do not consider the green value of their operations nor look at production from an environmental perspective. In order to attain sustainable development, there is a need to use less resources and energy than what is presently used in Korean agricultural and value production. The typical value chain should be transformed into a "closed-loop" such that the beginning and the end of the chain are linked together. Such structure allows the flow of materials, products and even wastes among participants in the chain in a sustained cycle. This may result in a zero-waste sustainable production without destroying the ecosystem.
During the Joseon period, the East Sea would be called 'Gyeonghae' due to a large number of whales. In the Republic of Korea, whaling was locally permitted in 1946. However, the number drastically dropped because the hunting of the marine mammal had already been carried out in Russia, the U.S. and Japan since 1800s. Before a moratorium on commercial whaling was introduced by the International Whaling Commission(IWC) in 1986, whale populations in the East Sea had plunged. Furthermore, Korean gray whales and fin whales weren't found anymore in that area. With the suspension, whale hunting was banned in Korea as well. Even so, accidentally caught whales have been allowed to be distributed on the market with respect for local food culture. With the establishment of Whale Museum and hosting of the 57th Annual Meeting of the International Whaling Commission(IWC) at Jangsaengpo in 2005, whale tourism was facilitated in earnest. This whale tourism has been operated by Nam-gu Office and Nam-gu City Management Corporation in Ulsan. However, the popularity of whale tourism has increased a demand for whale meat. At the same time, there has been concern over decrease in whale populations because of illegal whaling. In addition, a conflict between the use and protection of whales has caused confusion in tourism identity. Actually, there is a serious doubt on the sustainability of whale tourism due to the decade-long deficit and excessive investments. This study attempts to define a concept of whale tourism and propose a future direction for the sustainable growth and development of Korea's whale tourism industry after developing such comprehensive assessment indicators as a basic research for the introduction of sustainable whale tourism. To achieve the aim of this study, AHP(Analytic Hierarchy Process) was chosen as a main research tool and the factors were ranked by a comprehensive analysis of principal factors and detail factors. The current study showed the following results. First, ecological environment(0.430) was indicated the most important factor of whale tourism assessment indicators. Moreover, Population(0.1302), Action for Cetacean protection(0.1031), Governance(0.0898) were critical factors. On the other hand, Accommodations(0.0085), Whale meat(0.0088) were unimportant factors than others.

GIS (geographic information system) is a relatively new tool in the coastal and ocean area management toolbox, but its uses and functionality are quickly being recognized. GIS can help identity potential threats to coastal and ocean resources and evaluate alternative land-use and management practices. The application of GIS to coastal and ocean issues continues to grow as the general use of GIS matures. GIS software and technicians with the skills to apply GIS are now commonplace at federal, state and local government agencies as well as many NGOs and the private sector. However, these applications were focused on their special purposes. Therefore, we describe the management strategy of marine GIS and its components. The results of this study can be used as the fundamental guideline for the coastal and ocean management and sustainable development.
It is necessary to assess and manage the different elements of the marine ecosystem, such as climate change, habitat, primary and secondary production, energy flow, food web, potential yield, and fishing, to maintain the health of the ecosystem as well as support sustainable development of fishery. We set up an ecosystem model around the Korean peninsula to produce scientific predictions necessary for the assessment and management of marine ecosystems and presented the usability of the model with scenario experiments. We used the Atlantis ecosystem model based on the marine food web; Atlantis is a three-dimensional end-to-end model that includes the information and processes within an entire system, from an abiotic environment to human activity. We input the ecological and biological parameters, such as growth, mortality, spawning, recruitment, and migration, to the Atlantis model via functional groups using existing research and local measurements. During the simulation period (2018-2019), we confirmed that the model reproduced the observed data reasonably and reflected the actual ecosystem characteristics appropriately. We thus identified the usability of a marine ecosystem model with experiments on different environmental change scenarios.

The effects of an aquaponic system based on biofloc technology (BFT-AP) were analyzed for eel Anguilla japonica as aquaculture species and caipira Lactuca sativa as the cultivated crops. The rate of weight gain rate by the eels was 178% (BFT-AP 200 head) > 136% (BFT-AP 100 head) > 100% (BFT). The eel body weight in the BFT-AP (200 head) significantly increased when compared to the BFT only eel group (P<0.05). The weight of the upper layer of caipira was 91±8.5 g (200 head) > 90±8.9 g (100 head) > 48±8.3 g (Hydroponic crop, HP). The crop growth in all BFT-AP groups was higher than the control, the hydroponic group. The total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) and NO2--N concentrations decreased in the BFT-AP group when compared to the BFT group. It was possible to remove nitric acid from the aquaponics system and reuse it as eel rearing water. Although some nutrient concentrations were low in BFT when compared to HP, the nutrient concentration was sufficient for plant growth. The results show that BFT has the potentially to provide a sustainable aquaponic system.

It is necessary to study the material circulation of coastal ecosystem according to aquacultural activity in order to induce the sustainable production of aquaculture and the fishery environment for the useful use. Hence, it is essential to make an exact assessment for the sedimentation release flux at the sediment-water interface in the aquafarm. Sediment oxygen demand and dissolved inorganic nitrogen release fluxes were compared using in-situ and laboratory incubational examination. Sediment oxygen demands were 116, 34, and $31\;mmol\;O_2\;m^{-2}\;d^{-1}$ (in-situ incubation), 52, 17, and $15\;mmol\;O_2\;m^{-2}\;d^{-1}$ (Core incubation) and dissolved inorganic nitrogen release fluxes were 7.18, 7.98, and $1.78\;mmol\;m^{-2}\;d^{-1}$ (in-situ incubation), 3.33, 3.74, and $1.96\;mmol\;m^{-2}\;d^{-1}$ (Core incubation) at Tongyeong finfish, Yeosu finfish, and Wando abalone cage farms, respectively. Consequently, in-situ incubation results showed two times higher than laboratory examination. We compared the material flux at the sediment-water interface of each farm and the characteristics between two different kinds of material flux examination.

Most of Korean farms have been developed in the semi-closed bay, and its position is very vulnerable to the coastal contamination due to the long term and the high density. So, mariculture management is very essential for the sustainable aquaculture. Some of the specific ways would be the assessment of the optimal stocking density for mariculture management zone and this has to consider both the suitable site selection and the assessment of ecological carrying capacity. Habitat suitability index(0.0 totally unsuitable habitat, 1.0 optimum habitat) and ecological indicator(Filtration pressure indicator) was used to assess the stocking density for oyster farms in Geoje-Hansan Bay. Geoje Bay showed the higher habitat suitability index value 0.75 than Hansan Bay 0.53, indicating that Geoje Bay is more suitable for oyster farming. Ecological indicator showed different stocking density according to the coastal characteristics in Geoje-Hansan Bay. Consequently, it is desirable that the stocking density in Geoje Bay should reduce average 40% and Hansan Bay, average 60% than present, in order to meet the ecological carrying capacity. The assessment of the stocking density could solve various problems such as the coastal contamination, environmental aggravation and the productivity decrease and this study could be a scientific basis to establish the policies for mariculture management.
