In order to analyze the physical and chemical characteristics of the home production porcelain insulators by change of the alumina addition amount, 36000lbs ball socket type suspension insulators which were manufactured in 1989, 1995 and 2001 removed in transmission line and an experiment was performed. By the result, 8 [wt.%] alumina that influences the mechanical properties and arc resistance properties in case of insulators that were manufactured in 1989 was contained, and the relative density and the fracture toughness of insulators appeared by 94.2% and 1.4 [MPa $M^{1/2}$], respectively. However, 12 [wt.%] alumina was contained in case of insulators that were manufactured in 1995, and the relative density and the fracture toughness of insulators appeared preferably lower by 92% and 1.3 [MPa $M^{1/2}$], respectively. Amount of alumina was contained most by 17 [wt.%] in case of insulators that were manufactured in 2001. It was confirmed that the electrical and mechanical characteristics such as the relative density and the fracture toughness appeared excellently by 96% and 1.7 [MPa $m^{1/2}$], respectively.

Porcelain suspension insulators aged for 1, 5 and 10 years on Korean transmission lines and new insulators are tested for autoclave expansion. The compressive strength of the insulators aged in an autoclave with conditions of $250\;^{\circ}C$ and at 20 atm for 30 minutes, was about $7.6\;kgf/mm^2$, which is close to that measured on insulators aged for 10 years in the field. From simulation results, the cement displacement changed linearly with temperature. At a temperature of $200\;^{\circ}C$, the shear stress was approximately $7\;kgf/mm^2$; a stress that is brought about by a 0.07 % expansion of the cement. It is evident that the cement would fracture at a 0.07 % expansion, because the cement has about 7 to $9\;kgf/mm^2$ flexure strength. A turning point in the shear stress with mechanical load occurred at 0.02 % cement expansion. From an analysis of the porcelain body it is shown that there is sufficient margin of strength to guard against fracture of the porcelain body even for a cement expansion more than 0.12 %.

This paper analyzed the electrical field strength of porcelain suspension insulator used various testing methods in order to present the causes and countermeasure for the puncture failure by the inner minute defect. A power frequency puncture test and a step-front-of-wave flashover voltage test were conducted. The failed specimen of these samples was analyzed material characteric observed the cross-sectional picture by the scanning electron microscope, and tested the autoclave expansion for the portland cement using the metal bond agent. The porcelain made a progress the failure by the thermal expansion coefficient of the different material. The inner detecting technique on behalf of the puncture failure protection is presented such as the steep-front-of-wave flashover voltage test.

Faults due to salt damage prevent the provision of stable power supply because they affect large areas and require much time and man power for recovery. Korea, three sides of which are surrounded by sea, is especially exposed to the impact of sea winds and typhoons. Therefore, salt damage to power facilities is one of the greatest problems of Korea's power system. To prevent salt damage pollution of insulators, the salt damage deposit on the insulators is regularly measured, and the insulators are washed when their salt damage deposits are expected to reach a critical level. When salt is detected on the insulators, however, errors are likely to occur according to different workers and environments. Therefore, a leakage current measurement method was proposed in this study to check the salt damage pollution level and reduce these errors.
In this study, finite element modeling and material property tests are performed for the finite element analysis of rubber isolator parts which support the engine and isolate the vibration. As a result of the P direction analysis of the rubber isolator parts, the static stiffness in the P direction was 44.2 kg/mm, which is well within the error of 5% as compared with the test result of 46.1 kg/mm. The static stiffness of the rubber isolator parts in the Q direction was calculated to be 7.9 kg/mm, which is comparable to the test result of 8.6 kg/mm, with an error of less than 8%. As a result of the analysis on the Z direction, the static stiffness was calculated as 57.7 kg/mm, and the test results were not available. Through this study, it is expected that the time and cost for prototype development can be reduced through nonlinear finite element analysis for rubber isolator parts.

In our country, the housing materials of polymeric outdoor insulators have mainly been used EPDM or silicone rubber. EPDM housing materials had been widely used in the field for the first time. The reason why silicone has the high cost of production. But recently, most of the manufacturers that newly developed polymeric insulators make its choice of silicone housing. EPDM showed a good resistance to tracking. We compared the various characteristics for EPDM and silicone insulators that have similar type and design. Silicone insulators have more performance in flashover voltage test and leakage current measurement because of a good water repellent than EPDM ones. Also, the property of EPDM compared with silicone insulators greatly decreased after aging test in combined acceleration ageing facilities for 1000 hours.

In this study the thermal impact characteristics by forest fire are extensively investigated using temperature controlled ovens. The test conditions for thermal impact damage are simulated according to the characteristics of natural forest fire. The test pieces are suspension porcelain insulators made by KRI in 2005 for transmission lines. In the thermal impact cycle tests with $300\;^{\circ}C$ thermal impact gradient (-70 to $230\;^{\circ}C$), cycling in 10 minute periods, no critical failures occurred in the test samples even with long cycle times. But in tests with thermal impact gradient from room temperature to $200-600\;^{\circ}C$, cycling in 10 to 30 minute periods, there were critical failures of the porcelain insulators according to the thermal impact gradient and quenching method. In the case of thermal impact by forest fire, it was found of that duration time is more important than the cycling time, and the initiation temperature of porcelain insulator failures is about $300\;^{\circ}C$, in the case of water quenching, many cracks and fracture of the porcelain occurred. It was found that the thermal impact failure is closely related to the displacement in the cement by thermal stress as confirmed by simulation. It was estimated that the initiation displacement by the thermal impact of $300\;^{\circ}C$ is about 0.1 %. Above 1% displacement, it is expected that the most porcelain insulators would fail.

This paper presents a new numerical algorithm for fault discrimination and fault location estimation when occur to arcing ground and arcing line to line on transmission lines. The object of this paper is developed from new numerical algorithm to calculate the fault distance and simultaneously to make a distinction between transient and permanent faults. so the first of object for propose algorithm would be distinguish the permanent from the transient faults. This arcing fault discrimination algorithm is used if calculated value of arc voltage amplitude is greater than product of arc voltage gradient and the length of the arc path, which is equal or greater than the flashover length of a suspension insulator string[1-3]. Also, each algorithm is separated from short distance and long distance. This is difference to with/without capacitance between short to long distance. To test the validity of the proposed algorithms, the results of algorithm testing through various computer simulations are given. The test was simulated in EMTP/ATP simulator under a number of scenarios and calculate of algorithm was used to MATLAB.
