The present study deals with CFD analysis of 'The vortex generators on plastic plate heat exchanger'. When a vortex generator is placed on the heat transfer surface, the flow gets more complex because it entails complicated three-dimensional flows such as separation, reattachment, and recirculation. CFX-5.4, a commercial code utilizing unstructured mesh, has been used as a computational method for solving RANS(Reynolds-Averaged Wavier-Stokes) equations, and the applied turbulence model is $k-{\varepsilon}$ model. In addition, those computational analyses were implemented under various conditions , with or without the vortex generator between two plates, the number, form and the size of vortex generator, and different attack of angle. From the calculated temperature, velocity and pressure distribution, vorticity, wall heat flux and so on under those conditions, this study shows the effect of vortex on heat transfer.

Mixing vanes have been installed in the space grid of nuclear fuel rod bundle to improve turbulent heat transfer. Split mixing vanes induce the vortex flow in the cooling water to swirl in sub-channel of fuel assembly. But, The swirling flow decays rapidly so that the heat transfer enhancing effect limited to short length after the mixing vane. In thi present study, the large scale vortex flow(LSVF) is generated by rearranging the mixing vanes to the coordinated directions. This LSVF mixing vanes generate the most strong secondary flow vortices which maintain about 35 $D_H$ after the spacer grid. The streamwise vorticity generated by LSVF sustain two times more than that split mixing vane. Heat transfer in the rod bundle occurs greatly at the same direction to cross flow, and maximum temperature at the surface of bundle drops about 1.5K

The shock-free inflow criterion applied in the development of two-dimensional cascade for turbomachinery design. The developed cascade analysis with potential flow calculation through a panel method has been used to determine the shock-free inflow condition. The combination between cascade analysis and PSO (particle swarm optimization) algorithm provides an opportunity to develop a diagram of a two-dimensional parameter cascade at various airfoil shapes. Analytical equations have been derived from the diagram that will facilitate the turbomachinery designer in applying the shock-free inflow criterion on their developed cascade. This method has been used to develop the very low head axial hydraulic turbine and provides excellent results of numerical and actual prototype performances.

The flow field structures of dual jet-in-cross-flow were examined experimentally for in-lined perforated damage holes configuration using particle image velocimetry. Ensemble averaged in-plane velocity and vorticity data in the jet were determined to study the mean jet structure. Jets are formed by pressure differences between upper and lower airfoil surface. The flow structure of vicinity of the thru holes consist of a vortical structure that wrap around the jets like a horseshoe and develop further downstream through a pair of stream-wise vortices. The shape, size and location of the horseshoe vortex were found to be dependent on the angle of attack. In spite of the existence of battle damage holes, the effect on the control force was insignificant when the damage size was not large enough.
Vortex shedding from a circular cylinder is simulated by means of the discrete vortex method. The shear layer emanating from the separation point is approximated as a sheet vortex which is in turn represented by a sequence of discrete vortices. The strength of these vortices is calculated from the vorticity shedding rate and introduced at a small distance off the side ($\Theta=\pm\pi/2$) of the cylinder surface in regular time step. Sheet vortex cutting, rediscretization and replacement of vortex by vortex segment are put to use to enhance stability of the sheet vortex evolution. The simulated vortex distribution pattern very well reproduces structure like the Karman vortex street. However, as for the force coefficients, the qualitative properties are correctly predicted but some more improvements are needed for the quantitative accuracy.
An experimental investigation of the flow over the rectangular body located in close proximity to a ground board was reported using the particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique. The present experiments were conducted in a closed-loop open surface water channel with the Reynolds number, $Re_H=1.2{\times}10^4$ based on the model height. In addition to the PIV measurements, flow visualization studies were also carried out. The PIV technique provided instantaneous and time-averaged velocity vectors map, vorticity contours, streamline topology and turbulent quantities at various locations in the near wake. In the vertical symmetry plane, the upperbody flow is separated from the sharp top leading edge of the model and formed a large reverse flow region on the upper surface of the model. The flow structure downstream of the model has asymmetric double vortices. In the horizontal symmetry plane, identical separated flow regions occur on both vertical side walls and a pair of primary recirculatory bubbles dominates the wake region.
Open-cross-section composite beam (OCB) tends to suffer vortex-induced vibration (VIV) due to its bluff aerodynamic shape. A cable-stayed bridge equipped with typical OCB is taken as an example in this paper to conduct sectional model wind tunnel test. Vortex-induced vibration is observed and maximum vibration amplitudes are obtained. CFD approach is employed to calculate the flow field around original cross sections in service stage and construction stage, as well as sections added with three different countermeasures: splitters, slabs and wind fairings. Results show that flow separate on the upstream edge and cause vortex shedding on original section. Splitters can only smooth the flow field on the upper surface, while slabs cannot smooth flow field on the upper or lower surface too much. Thus, splitters or slabs cannot serve as valid aerodynamic means. Wind tunnel test results show that VIV can only be mitigated when wind fairings are mounted, by which the flow field above and below the bridge deck are accelerated simultaneously.
The synoptic structural characteristics associated with heavy snowfall (Bukgangneung: 31.3 cm) that occurred in the Yeongdong area on 20 January 2017 was investigated using surface and upper-level weather charts, European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) reanalysis data, radiosonde data, and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) cloud product. The cold dome and warm trough of approximately 500 hPa appeared with tropopause folding. As a result, cold and dry air penetrated into the middle and upper levels. At this time, the enhanced cyclonic potential vorticity caused strong baroclinicity, resulting in the sudden development of low pressure at the surface. Under the synoptic structure, localized heavy snowfall occurred in the Yeongdong area within a short time. These results can be confirmed from the vertical analysis of radiosonde data and the characteristics of the MODIS cloud product.

Hydrodynamic characteristics of wave propagation through density stratification have not been identified in details. So this study conducted a numerical simulation using LES-WASS-3D ver. 2.0 for analysis of density current due to water temperature and salinity in order to analyze hydraulic characteristics under wave action in a two-layer density stratified fluid. For the validity and effectiveness of numerical wave tank used, it was compared and analyzed with the experiment to show waveform based on $3^{rd}$-order Stoke wave theory at the internal of a density stratification. Using the results obtained from numerical simulation, the surface and internal wave heights are reduced as the wave propagates in a two-layer density stratified water. And the surface or internal wave attenuation became more serious as the vorticities were increased by the velocity difference of wave propagation due to the upper-lower density difference around the interface of a density stratification. As well, the surface and internal wave attenuations became more serious with higher density difference and depth ratio between upper and lower layers when the wave propagates through a density stratification.

The hybrid rocket shows interesting characteristics of complicated mixing layer developed by the interaction between turbulent oxidizer flow and injected surface mass flow from fuel vaporization. In this study, the compressible LES was conducted to explore the physical phenomena of surface oscillatory flow induced by the flow interferences in a duct domain. From the numerical results, the wall injection generates the stronger streamwise vorticites and the negative components of axial velocity accompanied with the azimuthal vorticity near the surface. And the vortex shedding with a certain time scale was found to be developed by hydrodynamic instability in the mixing layer. The pressure fluctuations in this calculation exhibit a peculiar peak at a specific angular frequency($\omega$=8.8) representing intrinsic oscillation due to the injection.
