  • Sulfur content of diesel fuel has been cut down to under 10 ppm ULSD (ultra low sulfur diesel) level by environmental regulation with the aim of reducing exhaust emissions. This review discusses the methods and principles of sulfur reduction in diesel and presents an overview of new approaches for ultra-deep desulfurization. The deep HDS (hydrodesulfurization) problems of diesel streams is exacerbated by the inhibiting effect of co-existing aromatics, nitrogen compounds and $H_2S$. The new approaches to deep desulfurization includes non-HDS type processing schemes such as adsorptive, extractive and oxidative desulfurization.

  • BACKGROUND: Run off from agricultural sites contaminates water bodies with nitrogen which is toxic and causes eutrophication when excessively accumulated. Hence, the interest in monitoring nitrogen toxicity in aquatic environment has been continuously increasing. METHODS AND RESULTS: To detect a real time toxicity of various nitrogen compounds, we applied biomonitoring method (biosensor) based on sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (SOB). The toxicity biomonitoring test was conducted in semi-continuous mode in a reactor filled with sulfur particles (2~4 mm diameter) under aerobic condition. Relative toxicity was simply determined by measuring the change in electrical conductivity (EC). Various nitrogenous compounds at different concentrations were evaluated as a potential toxic substance. Nitrite was found to be very toxic to SOB with a 90% inhibition even when the concentration as low as 3 mg/L. However, nitrate and ammonia have any inhibitory effect on SOB's activity. CONCLUSION: The biosensor based on SOB responded sensitively to nitrite even at substantially low concentrations. Therefore, it can be used as a reliable biological alarm system for rapid detection of contaminants due to its simplicity and sensitive nature.

  • To utilize the leaves of broccoli, the shape of which was similar with that of kale leaves, as a vegetable juice, the extracts from two types of vegetable leaves were subjected to the analyses of proximate com ponents, volatile sulfur compounds, vitamin C and minerals. The sensory evaluation of the juices, prepared from kale and broccoli leaves, were performed by duo trio test and scoring test. Among eight varieties of broccoli, four varieties('Pilgrim', 'Greenbelt', 'Salinas' and 'Shasta')were not significantly different from kale(p<0.05), based on the duo trio sensory test. Sulfur and nitrogen compounds present in the dichloromethane extracts of kale and broccoli leaves 'Pilgrim' were identified as 3 butenyl, allyl, butyl and 4 methylsulfinylbutyl isothiocyanate(sulforaphane), 4,5 epithiovalero, 4,5 epithio 3 hydroxyvalero, benzenepropane, 3 hydroxy 4 propene, 4 methylthio butane, 3 hydroxy 3 phenylpropane, 5 methy lsulfinylpentane, 4 methoxyphenyl 3 hydroxypropane nitrile and dimethyl trisulfide by GC/MSD analysis. Proximate components were observed to be relatively similar between kale and broccoli leaves. Vitamin C and sugar content were higher in broccoli leaves(125∼180mg% and 8∼12°Brix) than in kale(101mg% and 7oBrix). In mineral analysis by AA and ICP Mass, 'Pilgrim' showed a higher content of K, Fe, Mn, Zn and Se. In separate experiment, sensory scores of bitter taste and astringent taste were lower and scores of over all taste and over all acceptability, higher in broccoli('1243') juice than those in kale juice.

  • Purpose: If early diagnosis is not made, patients with metabolic disorders as homocystinemia rapidly progress to physical defect or mental retardation resulted in storage of the toxic material into the brain. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an analytical method for a rapid screening and/or correct confirmation diagnosis. Methods: The standard solution of sulfur amino acids spiked plasma was subjected to protein precipitation with methanol, and then consecutively derivatized with trimethylsilyl (TMS) and trifluoroacyl (TFA) and determined by GC-MS. The formation of TMS derivative of the hydroxyl and TFA derivative of amino functional group was performed by BSTFA and MBTFA, respectively. Selective ion monitoring (SIM) mode was used for quantification with selected specific ions. Results: A calibration curve on standard spiked pooled plasma showed a linear relationship with correlation coefficient of 0.9936-0.9992 for all compounds over the range of 0.1-300 ng. The precision and accuracy were within S.D. of 1-15% and RSD of 1-15% for intra-day assay at 2 ng/mL, 15 ng/mL and 30 ng/mL. LOD and LOQ was 0.4 ng/mL and 4 ng/mL respectively. Conclusion: A rapid analytical method was developed to quantify sulfur amino acids and methyl malonic acid, after two-step derivatization procedure with good sensitivity and specificity on human plasma. Advantages of a new method are simplicity and rapidity. The method could be useful for routine analysis, diagnosis of homocysteinemia.

  • Order of reaction, rate constant, activation energy for vulcanization reaction, crosslinking density, and elastic constant of the network produced by sulfur curing were investigated on the SBR/BR blends containing silica and carbon black under same cure system. The reaction order was shown to be first order regardless of filler types. The carbon black filled rubber compounds showed higher rate constant compared to silica filled compounds. But activation energy appeared to be same regardless of filler type and rubber blend ratio. The crosslinking density and elastic constant is higher in the carbon black filled compound compared to silica filled compounds because of strong interaction between rubber and carbon black. On the other hand, crosslinking density and elastic constant were decreased with increasing the butadine rubber content in rubber blends. From the comparison of combined sulfur content in the vulcanized rubber, sulfur content in the silica filled compound become constant 20min later after reaction initiates but sulfur content in the carbon black filled compound become constant 10min later after reaction starts. The silica compound has a longer induction time ($t_2$) and optimum cure time($t_{90}$) compared to those of the carbon black filled compound.

  • Volatile flavor compounds of 3 commercial products of black onion extract (produced in Changnyeong, Muan and Jeungpyeong) purchased in the online/offline markets were analyzed. A total of 51 compounds were detected in samples by solid phase microextraction (SPME)/GC/MSD, consisting mainly of carbonyl compounds (15), sulfur-containing compounds (8), aromatic compounds (6), furans (6), nitrogen-containing compounds (3), alcohols (2), acids (2) and miscellaneous compounds (10). Among carbonyls, 4 compounds including 2-methylbutanal, 3-methylbutanal, nonanal and benzaldehyde were detected in all samples, while two sulfur containing compounds, dimethyl disulfide and dimethyl trisulfide, were detected in high amounts and considered to be key flavors in black onion extracts. Particularly, thiophenes and 3 sulfur containing compounds (methylpropyl disulfide, methyl-(Z)-propenyl disulfide and methyl-(E)-propenyl disulfide) were detected only in two products. With acetic acid, furfural and pyrazines that formed through Maillard reaction during black onion aging were detected in high amounts in all samples. This also contributed to characteristic flavors such as roasted, sweet, and sour, in the flavor of black onion extracts.

  • Dietary organosulfur compounds have been shown to inhibit the proliferation of tumor cells. Synthetic sulfur-containing compounds including oltipraz exert chemopreventive and hepatoprotective effects. We previously showed that synthetic allylthiopyridazine derivatives designated as K compounds induced apoptosis in SK-Hep-1 hepatocarcinoma cells (Eur. J. Cancer: 37, 2104-10, 2001). (omitted)
