  • In cruise ships, it is inevitable to arrange the cabins near by the noisy areas, such as ventilation fan, HVAC machinery and funnel casing etc. The noise is propagated to the cabins by way of mount, foundation and deck. The transmitted noise to cabin is affected by mount and foundation structure. It is well-known that most of the structure-borne noise can be reduced by the flexible mount. However, when the foundation of machinery is designed inappropriately, it can make noise problems in cabins. In this paper, the effect of foundation on noise reduction is studied through the numerical analysis and mock up test. The dynamic performance of foundation is investigated from the viewpoint of the impedance and noise reduction in cabin.

  • When fluid at high speed flows over an open cavity, large acoustic pressure fields inside the cavity are produced by fluid/structure interactions at the downstream end of the cavity. The inter-coach spacing is one of the most important sources of the aero-acoustic noise of a high-speed train. This noise can usually be heard as low frequency structure-borne noise inside the train. In this study experiments were performed in order to investigate the effects of mud-flap length on the aeroacoustic noise generation inside high-speed trains. Results of the measurement confirmed that the characteristics of the noise generated from the inter-coach spacing are strongly dependent on the size of the gap. Also investigated are the characteristics of the turbulent flow after the inter-coach spacing and consequent generation of the aeroacoustic noise inside the cabin.

  • Mindlin plate theory includes the shear deformation and rotatory inertia effects which cannot be negligible as exciting frequency increases. The statistical methods such as energy flow analysis(EFA) and statistical energy analysis(SEA) are very useful for estimation of structure-borne sound of various built-up structures. For the reliable vibrational analysis of built-up structures at high frequencies, the energy transfer relationship between out-of-plane waves and in-plane waves exist in Mindlin plates coupled at arbitrary angles must be derived. In this paper, the new wave transmission analysis is successfully performed for various energy analyses of Mindlin plates coupled at arbitrary angles.

  • C-C chemokine receptor type 4 (CCR4) is a chemokine receptor with seven transmembrane helices and it belongs to the GPCR family. It plays an important role in asthma, lung disease, atopic dermatitis, allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis, cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, the mosquito-borne tropical diseases, such as dengue fever and allergic rhinitis. Because of its role in wide spectrum of disease processes, CCR4 is considered to be an important drug target. Three dimensional structure of the protein is essential to determine the functions. In the present study homology modeling of human CCR4 was performed based on crystal structure of CCR5 chemokine receptor. The generated models were validated using various parameters. Among the generated homology models the best one is selected based on validation result. The model can be used for performing further docking studies to identifying the critical interacting residues.

  • A structural modification technique for reducing structure-borne noise of vehicles using a sensitivity analysis is suggested. To estimate the noises generated by the vibration response, a semi structure-acoustic coupling analysis was exploited. As a result of the coupling analysis, severe noise generating positions are identified whose vibrations should be cured through structural modifications. Formulation for the sensitivity analysis of those severe vibration responses with respect to the design changes is derived to enhance the vibration response. Special attention is given in this paper to the use of the experimentally measured vibration responses in the sensitivity analysis. As a result of the proposed method, the structural modifications can be peformed accurately by using experimental data instead of using the finite element method though the higher vibration modes are considered as long as the vibration measurement and acoustic mode calculations are accurate. Effectiveness of this method was examined using an example model by experiments.

  • High-speed trains with the maximum speed of 300 km/h have started revenue services since April 2004. A large portion of the 'Kyung-Bu' line is comprised of tunnels or bridges, which may cause excessive noise in a vehicle. The vibration generated by the trains propagates into the structure of the tunnel and the vehicle and it can be radiated as noise inside the vehicle interior. This noise can usually be heard as low frequency structure-borne noise. Measurement of the noise and vibration inside the KTX vehicle confirmed that the noise comprises of frequencies below 250 Hz with a couple of broad peaks.

  • The vibration resulting from railway operation is transmitted through the tunnel to adjacent buildings and the transmitted vibration radiates structure-borne noise which is causing a lot of public complaints by its negative effects to the buildings near tunnel. This study performed the parametric study about sleeper space and track support stiffness in order to reduce vibration on the concrete track and near structures. In this study, it was compared and performed vibration analysis and field test about these. In addition, as changing the sleeper space and track support stiffness, vibration of the structures was evaluated. Via this study, in terms of reducing the figure of the sleeper space and track support stiffness to the half, as vibrating acceleration transmitted through concrete round is getting reduced, it transmitted through the tunnel was analysed to the same phenomena. In conclusion, suggested track structure into this study, it can be applied to the track structure of existing line, and it is expected to be a new effective anti-vibration method to prevent public complaints.

  • Allyl isothiocyanate (AITC), as a fumigant, plays an important role in soil control of nematodes, soil-borne pathogens, and weeds, but its effects on soil microorganisms are unclear. In this study, the effects of AITC on microbial diversity and community composition of Capsicum annuum L. soil were investigated through Illumina high-throughput sequencing. The results showed that microbial diversity and community structure were significantly influenced by AITC. AITC reduced the diversity of soil bacteria, stimulated the diversity of the soil fungal community, and significantly changed the structure of fungal community. AITC decreased the relative abundance of dominant bacteria Planctomycetes, Acinetobacter, Pseudodeganella, and RB41, but increased that of Lysobacter, Sphingomonas, Pseudomonas, Luteimonas, Pseudoxanthomonas, and Bacillus at the genera level, while for fungi, Trichoderma, Neurospora, and Lasiodiplodia decreased significantly and Aspergillus, Cladosporium, Fusarium, Penicillium, and Saccharomyces were higher than the control. The correlation analysis suggested cellulase had a significant correlation with fungal operational taxonomic units and there was a significant correlation between cellulase and fungal diversity, while catalase, cellulose, sucrase, and urease were the major contributors in the shift of the community structure. Our results will provide useful information for the use of AITC in the assessment of environmental and ecological security.

  • Predicting the noise radiated from vibrating structures is important in the automotive, aerospace, construction equipment, and defense industries. In this paper, a numerical implementation of the boundary element method in solving the Helmholtz integral equation for radiated noise prediction is presented. To predict the noise emitted by vibrating structure, the developed code can use the results from a structure analysis performed by a multi-purpose structural finite element code like ANSYS and directly measured data by non-contact vibration sensor like Laser Doppler Vibrometer. To verify the accuracy of developed code, two kinds of verification are perfomed. Firstly, the computer code used the harmonic analysis results of ANSYS in simple model and try to match with SYSNOISE. After matching with simulation results, the code compared with the result from SYSNOISE which used the velocity data from the LDV measurement with different number of points. The performance of the developed code for vibro-acoustic noise prediction is presented using the experimental results of the non-contact sensor

  • Structure-borne noise and vibration is one of the main complaints of home appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners, etc. There have been many efforts to reduce the emitting noise and vibration. Mostly the efforts have been concentrated to optimize the mounts shape and its material properties realizing that the vibration power is mainly transmitted to the structure via mounts. It is known that softer mounts have the better vibration isolation effect. But mounts have another important function in addition to the vibration isolation. That is to support the motor and compressor safely. Thus mounts should be stiff enough to resist the supporting items. But the two properties, stiff and soft, are contradict each other. So the designer should compromise the two complicity properties properly in between. Noticing that, motors and compressors themselves are very quite until they are connected to the base structure via mounts, wire connecting idea was proposed in this work. Instead of using conventional mounts, as shown in Fig 4, compressor was mounted using six wires as shown in Fig 5. Since wire is very flexible in bending but stiff in tension, we can realize the ideal mount design requirements, stiff enough to support and soft enough to isolate vibration power. The suggesting idea was tested with an air conditioner outdoor unit.
