  • Weight reduction for an automobile body is being sought for the fuel efficiency and the energy conservation. One way of the efforts is adopting Ultra Light Steel Auto Body (ULSAB) concept. The ULSAB concept can be used for the light weight of an automobile door with the tailor welded blank (TWB). A design process is defined for the TWB. The inner panel of door is designed by the TWB and optimization. The design starts from an existing component. At first, the hinge and inner reinforcements are removed. In the conceptual design stage, topology optimization is conducted to find the distribution of variable thicknesses. The number of parts and the welding lines are determined from the topology design. In the detailed design process, size optimization is carried out to find thickness while stiffness constraints are satisfied. The final parting lines are determined by shape optimization.

  • This paper is to study the mechanical behavor and structural safety of the wire-mesh half slab by an analytical method. Layer model was adopted by modelling the wire-mesh half slab as a flexural member composed of free cantilever beam and vertical supports (walls or beams). Reasonable results for the prediction of ultimate strength of the half stab at each loading direction and design recommendations for the reinforcement detail at wall(beam)-slab joints are acquired. On the other hand, ductility capacity of the wire-mesh half slab was overestimated by not considering the brittleness of wire-mesh reinforcements pre-manufactured at the form of Kaiser Truss.

  • This study investigates the seismic performance of bearing walls with rectangular sectional shape and specific details of reinforcements developed for 10 to 20-story apartment buildings in Korea. To investigate seismic behavior of structural walls, several specimens were experimented by author and laboratory test results by other researchers were collected and analysed. Structural behaviors of walls were evaluated by means of ductility, deformation, and strength capacities. For this purpose, thirty six specimens having different Properties such as aspect ratios and details were considered. Based on the results of this study, deformability of the walls with specific details is discussed. Also this study compares the response modification factor(R) for the bearing wall systems in seismic design provisions between Korea and United States.

  • Transverse vibrations of ship's aft end and deckhouse among the various modes of hull structures are induced mainly by transverse exciting forces and moments of main engine such as ${\times}$ and h-moment. Avoidance of resonance should be made in a intial design stage in case there is a prediction for resonance between main engine and transverse modes of deckhouse. This study shows a case of change in type of main engine from 12 cylinders to 10 without modification of hull structures in engine room requested by a shipowner of 8,600 TEU class container carrier and proposes a guide to the effective ways of structural arrangement for avoiding resonance between transverse exciting force and surrounding structures of main engine in engine room through case studies.

  • The objective of this experimental study was to understand the structural behavior of reinforced concrete continuous deep beams with welded deformed wire fabric(WWF) as shear reinforcement. The structural behavior of deep beams reinforced with WWF was compared with that of deep beams reinforced with orthogonal shear reinforcement which had standard anchorage corresponding to ACI 318-02. Test results showed that the load transferring capacity and the control of splitting cracks in the strut of WWF were almost as effective as those of orthogonal shear reinforcement with standard anchorage.

  • A new constitutive model for the representation of the seismic behaviour of steel bars including hardening phenomena is presented. The model takes into account relative slip between bars and concrete, necessary for the estimation of the structural behaviour of r.c. elements and of the level of strain induced by earthquakes on bars. The present work provides the analytical formulation of the post-yielding behaviour of reinforcements, resulting in a continuous axial stress-slip relationship to be implemented in engineering software. The efficacy of the model is proved through the application to a cantilever column, for whose bars the constitutive law is derived.

  • This study investigated the impact behaviors of the stitched sandwich composites under the low energy impact by the use of drop weight impact tester. These sandwich composites condidted of the glass fabric faces with a urethane foam core. The upper face and the lower face were stitched to combinr through the core thickness direction using the polyester reinforcements. Four types of the stitched sandwich composites, each having a different core thickness, were tested to determine the effects of the core thickness. The impact conditions were changes with the variations of the mass and drop height of the impact tup. The test results showed that the core thickness and the impact condidtions such as the drop height and the mass of the impact tup affected the impact force, the contact time, and the strain behaviors of the stitched sandwich composites. The stitched sandwich composites are able to avert the damage and also maintain the structural integrity even thouth the presence of the damage owing to the through-the-thickness reinforcements. However, it is important to improve the wetting ability of the stitched reinforcements so that the conventional structures are substituted for the stitched sandwich composites effectively.

  • A prefabricated composite hollow slab with perforated I-beams was suggested for the replacement of deteriorated concrete decks or the construction of new composite bridges with long-span slabs. Composite slabs with embedded I-beams have considerably higher stiffness and strength. For the application of prefabricated composite slabs to bridges, joints between slabs should satisfy the requirements of the ultimate limit state and the serviceability limit state. In this paper, three types of the detail for loop joints were selected and their structural performance in terms of strength and crack control was investigated through static tests on continuous composite slabs. A main parameter was the detail of the joint, such as an ordinary loop joint and loop joint with additional reinforcements. Even though there was no connection of the steel beams at the joints, the loop joints showed good performance in ultimate strength. In terms of crack control, the loop joint with additional reinforcements showed better performance. In ultimate limit state, the continuous composite slabs showed good moment redistribution and ductility.

  • Continuous deep girders which transmit the gravity load from the upper wall to the lower columns have frequently long end shear spans between the boundary of the upper wall and the face of the lower column. This paper presents the results of tests and analyses performed on three 1:2.5 scale specimens with long end shear spans, (the ratios of shear-span/total depth: 1.8 < a/h < 2.5): one designed by the conventional approach using the beam theory and two by the strut-and-tie approach. The conclusions are as follows: (1) the yielding strength of the continuous RC deep girders is controlled by the tensile yielding of the bottom longitudinal reinforcements, being much larger than the nominal strength predicted by using the section analysis of the girder section only or using the strut-and-tie model based on elastic-analysis stress distribution. (2) The ultimate strengths are 22% to 26% larger than the yielding strength. This additional strength derives from the strain hardening of yielded reinforcements and the shear resistance due to continuity with the adjacent span. (3) The pattern of shear force flow and failure mode in shear zone varies depending on the amount of vertical shear reinforcement. And (4) it is necessary to take into account the existence of the upper wall in the analysis and design of the deep continuous transfer girders that support the upper wall with a long end shear span.

  • Out of plane behaviors of walls and infills are investigated in this paper, using rigid block concepts. Walls and infills are sometimes separated from top beams because of in plane movement of the walls and crumbling mortar layers under the top beams. Therefore, sufficient strength should be supplied to hold them against out of plane forces. Such walls are studied here under some real and scaled earthquakes, regarding their out of plane behavior. Influences of some reinforcements, connecting the walls to frames or perpendicular walls, are also studied. It is shown that unreinforced walls of regular sizes (3 m high and 4.5 m long) are normally unstable in the earthquakes. However, performing some reinforced bars that connect them to adjacent elements- frames or perpendicular walls - stabilizes them. Eventually, it is concluded that supplying 3 reinforced bars at 1/4, 2/4 and 3/4 of the panel's height stabilizes the walls in the assumed earthquakes. In this regard, for 20 cm and 35 cm thick walls ${\Phi}$18mm and ${\Phi}$20mm bars are to be used, respectively. For walls with other configurations, the forces and required areas of the reinforcements can be determined by the developed method of this paper.
