Fire disasters have frequently happened in concrete structures, which resulted in severe structural damages and unsafety. In this case, the method which had evaluated the safety of damaged structures was often unaccepted from most of stakeholders and engineers. The objective of this study is to develope the procedure and method to be able to determine the safety. Numerical simulation was applied to produce the maximum temperature and temperature distribution. Nextly, temperature propagation analysis was performed to plot temperature gradients at each depth and location. The material strength curve versus temperature was applied to determine the safety of concrete structures damaged by fire. The maximum temperature should be calibrated considering real fire records ; magnitude, intensity, situation etc. The results shows that the selected procedure and method was applicable and practical.

In this study, some structural analysis using 3D CAD data, material properties, load conditions and boundary conditions are carried out to evaluate structural stability of the multi-aerial platform for high-rise fire fighting and rescue. We conduct structural analysis for the upper structures such as turn table, booms and basket, by using a universal structural analysis program NASTRAN. As the results, there is local stress exceeding the yield strength, but it is able to relax stress concentration in a way such as changing thickness of the structure or making larger inertia moment in cross section of booms.
Main structural steel members need fire-resistance measures to ensure their fire-resistance performance for a prescribed time. This paper analyzes and evaluates the fire-resistance performance of approved Korean fire-protection products for steel columns. These products are classified into products for board protection and for spray protection, samples of which were selected for the analysis. The fire-resistance performance was analyzed on the basis of Korean and European standards. The Korean standards are considered additional to the Euro-code standards for performance design. The Korean standards generally take more precautions to ensure safety on the temperature side, but require the reflection of material properties, the steel temperature calculation methodology, the profile factor, and the strength verification in a fire.

A numerical model considering the internal vaporization and the creep effect, in the form of a analytical program, for tracing the behavior of high strength concrete(HSC) members exposed to fire is presented. The two stages, i.e., spalling procedure and fire resistance time, associated with the thermal, moisture flow, creep and structural analysis, for the prediction of fire resistance behavior are explained. The use of the analytical program for tracing the response of HSC member from the initial pre-loading stage to collapse, due to fire, is demonstrated. Moisture evaporates, when concrete is exposed to fire, not only at concrete surface but also at inside the concrete to adjust the equilibrium and transfer properties of moisture. Finite element method is employed to facilitate the moisture diffusion analysis for any position of member, so that the prediction method of the moisture distribution inside the concrete members at fire is developed. The validity of the numerical model used in this program is established by comparing the predictions from this program with results from others fire resistance tests. The analytical program can be used to predict the fire resistance of HSC members for any value of the significant parameters, such as load, sectional dimensions, member length, and concrete strength.
Today, fires are becoming so catastrophic and complicated due to the industrialization and diversification of energy sources that it is getting more difficult to define the survey items in order to find out the causes and processes of the fire. As an organization of prevention, vigilance and putting out of the fire, Fire Fighting authorities are ultimately pursuing the system of fire fighting administration to protect human lives and their properties through establishment and performance of fire prevention policy based on the fire-related statistics they have gathered and prevention of future fires of the kind which can promote the safety of structural space. Thus, to facilitate the fire detection, it can be said that good understanding of the tasks of both investigation and putting out of the fire as being two axes has the greatest significance. For this study, textbooks from the organization of fire fighting and police, which are designed for the literature study on the investigation and putting out of fire, are used and for the demonstrative study, the conclusions have been reached by the analyses of the 64 questionnaires of three parts which were divided by fire investigation and fighting for three hundred and six governmental employees engaging in the above fields.

Recently, there have been frequent occurrences of bridge fires. Fires in cable-supported bridges can damage and brake cables due to high temperatures. In this study, fire scenarios that can occur on cable-supported bridges were set up. In addition, based on the results of vehicle fire tests, a fire intensity model was proposed and cable heat transfer analyses were performed on a target bridge. The analyses results demonstrated that temperature rises were identified on cables with a smaller cross-sectional area. Furthermore, vehicles other than tankers did not exceed the fire resistance criteria. When the tanker fire occurred on a bridge shoulder, the minimum diameter cable exceeded the fire resistance criteria; the height of the cable exceeding the fire resistance criteria was approximately 14 m from the surface. Therefore, the necessity of countermeasures and reinforcements of fire resistance was established. The results of this study confirmed that indirect evaluation of the temperature changes of bridge cables under fire is possible, and it was deemed necessary to further study the heat transfer analysis considering wind effects and the serviceability of the bridge when the cable temperature rises due to fire.

Developments in the understanding of fire behaviour for large open-plan spaces typical of tall buildings have been greatly outpaced by the rate at which these buildings are being constructed and their characteristics changed. Numerous high-profile fire-induced failures have highlighted the inadequacy of existing tools and standards for fire engineering when applied to highly-optimised modern tall buildings. With the continued increase in height and complexity of tall buildings, the risk to the occupants from fire-induced structural collapse increases, thus understanding the performance of complex structural systems under fire exposure is imperative. Therefore, an accurate representation of the design fire for open-plan compartments is required for the purposes of design. This will allow for knowledge-driven, quantifiable factors of safety to be used in the design of highly optimised modern tall buildings. In this paper, we review the state-of-the-art experimental research on large open-plan compartment fires from the past three decades. We have assimilated results collected from 37 large-scale compartment fire experiments of the open-plan type conducted from 1993 to 2019, covering a range of compartment and fuel characteristics. Spatial and temporal distributions of the heat fluxes imposed on compartment ceilings are estimated from the data. The complexity of the compartment fire dynamics is highlighted by the large differences in the data collected, which currently complicates the development of engineering tools based on physical models. Despite the large variability, this analysis shows that the orders of magnitude of the thermal exposure are defined by the ratio of flame spread and burnout front velocities (VS / VBO), which enables the grouping of open-plan compartment fires into three distinct modes of fire spread. Each mode is found to exhibit a characteristic order of magnitude and temporal distribution of thermal exposure. The results show that the magnitude of the thermal exposure for each mode are not consistent with existing performance-based design models, nevertheless, our analysis offers a new pathway for defining thermal exposure from realistic fire scenarios in large open-plan compartments.
This paper presents results from experimental and numerical studies on the response of steel-concrete composite box bridge girders under certain localized fire exposure conditions. Two composite box bridge girders, a simply supported girder and a continuous girder respectively, were tested under simultaneous loading and fire exposure. The simply supported girder was exposed to fire over 40% of its span length in the middle zone, and the two-span continuous girder was exposed to fire over 38% of its length of the first span and full length of the second span. A measurement method based on comparative rate of deflection was provided to predict the failure time in the hogging moment zone of continuous composite box bridge girders under certain localized fire exposure condition. Parameters including transverse and longitudinal stiffeners and fire scenarios were introduced to investigate fire resistance of the composite box bridge girders. Test results show that failure of the simply supported girder is governed by the deflection limit state, whereas failure of the continuous girder occurs through bending buckling of the web and bottom slab in the hogging moment zone. Deflection based criterion may not be reliable in evaluating failure of continuous composite box bridge girder under certain fire exposure condition. The fire resistance (failure time) of the continuous girder is higher than that of the simply supported girder. Data from fire tests is successfully utilized to validate a finite element based numerical model for further investigating the response of composite box bridge girders exposed to localized fire. Results from numerical analysis show that fire resistance of composite box bridge girders can be highly influenced by the spacing of longitudinal stiffeners and fire severity. The continuous composite box bridge girder with closer longitudinal stiffeners has better fire resistance than the simply composite box bridge girder. It is concluded that the fire resistance of continuous composite box bridge girders can be significantly enhanced by preventing the hogging moment zone from exposure to fire. Longitudinal stiffeners with closer spacing can enhance fire resistance of composite box bridge girders. The increase of transverse stiffeners has no significant effect on fire resistance of composite box bridge girders.
Steel is a structural material that is inherently noncombustible. On the other hand, it has high thermal conductivity and the strength and stiffness of the material are reduced significantly when exposed to fire or high temperatures. Because the yield strength and modulus of elasticity of steel are reduced by 70% at $350^{\circ}C$ and less than 50% at $600^{\circ}C$, the load-carrying capacity of steel structure at high temperature rapidly lose. To be accepted as a fire-resisting construction, the fire test should be performed at the certificate authority. On the other hand, the fire test on a full-scale structure is limited by time, space, and high-cost. The analytical method was verified by a comparison with the fire test of H-section columns under compression and thermal analysis based on a finite element method using the ABAQUS program, and the numerical analysis method reported in this study was suggested as a complement of an actual fire test.

In this paper, a probability-based procedure to evaluate the performance of existing RC structures exposed to seismic and fire actions is presented. The procedure is demonstrated with reference to an existing old school building, located in Italy. The vulnerability assessment of the building highlights deficiencies under both static and seismic loads. Retrofit operations are designed to achieve the seismic safety. The idea of the work consists in assessing the performance of the existing and retrofitted building in terms of both the seismic and fire resistance. The seismic retrofit and fire resistance upgrading follow different paths, depending on the specific configuration of the building. A good seismic retrofit does not entail an improving of the fire resistance and vice versa. The goal of the current work is to study the variation of response due to the uncertainties considered in records/fire curves selection and to carry out the assessment of the studied RC structure by obtaining fragility curves under the effect of different records/temperature. The results show the fragility curves before and after retrofit operations and both in terms of seismic performance and fire resistance performance, measuring the percent improving for the different limit states.
