  • The design concepts using vibration reduction techniques, or structural control, have been proposed recently to protect infrastructure against earthquakes. The magnetorheological(MR) fluid damper is one of the most promising new devices for structural vibration reduction because of its mechanical simplicity, high dynamic range, low power requirement, large force capacity and robustness. In this study, the seismic performance of MR devices are compared with that of NZ systems as an attempt to provide some data for improving seismic design techniques applied to structures. For nonlinear time domain analysis of a base isolation system, a six-story building model is considered as a numerical example. The ground acceleration data of El Centre 1940, Mexico City 1985 and Kobe 1995 earthquakes are used as seismic excitations. The results show that MR damper systems for outperform NZ systems in wide-ranging seismic excitations with respect to intensity and period characteristics.

  • This paper presents an efficient method for updating the structural finite element model. Model updating is performed through minimizing the difference between the recorded acceleration of a real damaged structure and a hypothetical damaged one. This is performed by updating physical parameters (module of elasticity in this study) in each step using iterative process of modified nonlinear conjugate gradient (M-NCG) and modified Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno algorithm (M-BFGS) separately. These algorithms are based on sensitivity analysis and provide a solution for nonlinear damage detection problem. Three illustrative test examples are considered to assess the performance of the proposed method. Finally, it is demonstrated that the proposed method is satisfactory for detecting the location and ratio of structural damage in presence of noise.

  • Self-centering concentrically braced frames (SCCBFs) are emerging as high performance seismically resistant braced framing system, due to the capacity of withstanding strong earthquake attacks and promptly recovering after events. To get a further insight into the seismic performance of SCCBFs, systematical evaluations are currently conducted from the perspective of modal contributions. In this paper, the modal pushover analysis (MPA) approach is utilized to obtain the realistic seismic demands by summarizing the contribution of each single vibration mode. The MPA-based results are compared with the exact results from nonlinear response history analysis. The adopted SCCBFs originate from existing buckling-restrained braced frames (BRBF), which are also analyzed for purpose of comparison. In the analysis of these comparable framing systems, interested performance indices that closely relate to the structural damage degree include the interstory drift ratio, floor acceleration, and absorbed hysteretic energy. The study shows that the MPA approach produces acceptable predictions in comparison to the exact results for SCCBFs. In addition, the high-modes effect on the seismic behavior increases with the building height, and is more evident in the SCCBFs than the BRBFs.

  • The purpose of this paper is to quantitatively investigate aging state of epoxy coating on containment structure at nuclear power plant. In order to evaluate an physical bonding of the epoxy coating, adhesion test was performed on a degraded epoxy coating on concrete specimens fabricated by accelerated aging experiment. In addition, impedance data by ultrasonic test were measured to compare with adhesion data. From almost 50 % of the specimens, aging phenomena of epoxy coating such as pin hole, blistering was discovered. To improve reliability on quality degradation of epoxy, co-relation between two kinds of different data was analyzed. By tracing co-related these data, it was possible to figure out physical state of as-built epoxy coating. The possibility to develop new methodology of time - dependent aging state on epoxy coating was found and discussed.

  • An investigation into the influence of ultrasonic standing wave on the structural behavior of propane/air premixed flame has been made to get a clue to the combustion reaction acceleration and combustion instability. Visualization technique utilizing the Schlieren photography was employed for the observation of structural variation of the flame reaction zone. Evolutionary characteristics of the flame front were caught by the high-speed Schlieren image, through which local flame velocity of the moving front were analyzed in detail.

  • This paper presents a new approach for the use of smart materials, piezoelectric materials of PVDF and PZT, for vibration attenuation of a planar parallel manipulator. Since lightweight linkages of parallel manipulators deform under high acceleration/deceleration, an active damper is needed to attenuate vibration due to structural flexibility of linkages. Based on the dynamic model of a planar parallel manipulator, an active damping controller is developed, which consists of a PD feedback control scheme, applied to linear electrical motors, and a linear velocity feedback (L-type) scheme applied to either PVDF layer or PZT actuator(5). Simulation results show that piezoelectric materials yield good damping performance, resulting in precise manipulations of a planar parallel manipulator.

  • In this paper the active vibration control system using a linear oscillatory actuator(LOA) is studied to suppress structural vibration. In the LOA, the AC-power-energized armature generates a shift field in an air gap, which produces a oscillating force to the mover in the magnetic field generated by high density permanent magnets. LOA has relatively simple structure with almost maintenance free, compared with a hydraulic actuator. Performance test of the active vibration control system using a LOA is carried out on a steel test structure under base excitation. From this test, it is confirmed that the acceleration level of the test structure is drastically reduced near the resonant region.

  • This paper deals with the finite element model of the monitor for the simulation of directional free drop tests such as backward, sideward, edge and vertex drop. The model was made for an unconditional stable solution for the explicit integration algorithm. The general behaviors at the time of impact were found to well correlate with the actual situation in terms of acceleration, displacement, contact force and stress of monitor components even though the experiment of the associated drop is performed for the validity of the model.

  • This study proposes a multi-objective optimum design method for a rational optimization of high-speed railway bridges. This multi-objective optimization is found to be effective in optimizing multi-objective problems that incorporate cost and dynamic responses such as vertical acceleration and displacement. These design factors are so important in the high-speed railway bridges. And the trade off method which is one of the most typical multi-objective optimization methods is used in this study, since the dynamic factors are formulated as objective function and also considered as constraints. And the Pareto curve can be obtained by performing the multi-objective optimization for real high-speed railway bridges. Thus, it is found that more reasonable design can be obtained when compared with those using conventional design procedure.

  • Plate girder bridges for tile Korean high-speed railway are optimally designed. Static and dynamic constraints are all considered. The design variables are the thicknesses and the lengths of the plates that are used to form I-shaped main girders with variable cross-sections. And the objective function is tile steel weight of a main girder. A C++ based design program is developed; this program interfaces with a FORTRAN based optimization program ADS. From the results of optimal design for various span lengths, it is observed that the deck vertical acceleration is one of the most important constraints in a special range of tile span length. Front a parametric study, sensitivity of the optimal design to static as well as dynamic constraints are presented.
