  • The failure of material structures or mechanical system is considered as a direct or indirect result of fatigue. In the design of mechanical structure for estimating of reliability, the prediction of failure life is the most important failure mode to be considered. However, because of a complicated behavior of fatigue in mechanical structure, the analysis of fatigue is in need of much researches on life prediction. This document presents a prediction of fatigue life of the SAPH45 steel, which is extensively for vehicle frame. The method using lethargy coefficient and stress distribution factor at pediction of fatigue life based on the consideration of the failure characteristics from the tensile test should be provided in this study.

Displacements of the helical stator tooth for an electromechanical integrated toroidal drive

  • The stator tooth is a key component of the electromechanical integrated toroidal drive system. The stator tooth is spiral in shape and the calculation of its displacements is difficult. In this paper, using the coordinate transformation method, the displacements of the stator tooth in the local coordinate system are expressed as the function of the variable in the drive coordinate system. Using the minimum potential energy principle, the equations of the displacements of the stator tooth under the loads are deduced. The displacement distributions within the stator tooth are investigated and the changes of the displacement distributions along with the main parameters are analyzed. This research can offer the basis for the strength and stiffness design of the drive system.

  • In the recent years, a rigid pavement composed of a flat concrete slab has ken constructed due to the desirable structural strength of concrete, durability and economy. However, despite of precise design and construction of concrete highway pavement, some sections of the 88 Olympic express highway, Jung-bu express highway, and Kyung-bu express highway, which have shown premature cracking, faulting, and pumping before the end of their intended service life, have already been viewed with great concerns by highway officials and engineers. Since environmental variations and traffic loads might be considered as major factors to cause pavement failure problems, the thermal load due to temperature variations between top and bottom surface of the concrete slab was highlighted to verify analytical behavior of concrete slab using the finite element method.

  • This paper summarizes full-scale test results on CFT column to flat plate connections subjected to gravity loading. CFT construction has gained wide acceptance in a relatively short time in domestic building practice due to its various structural and construction advantages. Constructing the floor as flat plate is often regarded as being essential for both cost savings and rapid construction. However, efficient details for CFT column to flat plate connections have not been proposed yet, and their development is urgently needed. Based on some strategies that include maximizing economical field construction, several connecting schemes were proposed and tested in this study. Test results showed the proposed connection details can exhibit strength and stiffness comparable to or greater than those of R/C flat plate counterpart.

  • In this paper, a theorectical approach is studied to predict structural performances and weight-reduction rates of hybrid bodyshells in case that the materials of roof structures are substituted. To determine other light-weight materials to be substituted for the original roof materials, bending and twisting deformations are considered under constant stiffness and strength conditions, which derive some new weight-reduction indices from a structural performance point of view. The indices derived to estimate the weight-reduction can be utilized as a good criterion at the conceptual design for material substitution of the roofs.

  • In order to develop a high speed train, various conditions have been considered. Fatigue strength assessment by the fluctuation of pressure is an important one. In this study, a numerical simulation has been performed to estimate the fluctuation and frequency of pressure when KHST(Korean High Speed Train)passes through tunnels in the Kyung-Bu high-speed railway. The simulation was based on KHST running the Kyung-Bu high-speed line with the speed of 350km/h and the interval of 10 minute headway. And the tunnel entrance speed was estimated by TPS program. Therefore, the fluctuation and frequency of pressure is expressed in Weibull distribution function in the above running situation. The result in this study would be good guidance to calculate the fatigue life and the index of reliability of body structure. We are going to conduct more study to measure the real value of the pressure of the carbody passing through tunnels, to assess the fatigue reliability and to develop method & procedure for the fatigue reliability design.

Practical Use of Self Compacting Concrete to be filled inside the Steel Tube Columns (무다짐 콘크리트를 이용한 높은 40m CFT 기둥의 시공)

  • The structure of Tower Palace III Sports Center building was designed as concrete Filled Steel Tube(CFT) Column and the filled-in concrete was designed as high compressive strength of 500kgf/$m_2$. The self compacting concrete(SCC, non-vibrating concrete) with 65$\pm$5cm flow must be applied to this case for filling the CFT by injecting the concrete from the column bottom. Laboratory tests and pilot productions of batcher plant were performed for optimum mix design and the full scale Mock-Up test was performed to check the appicability of the construction method. As a result, we observed that good quality SCC and the pressure change of concrete pump normally used domestically. Based on these results, we have constructed 20-40m height CFT columns successfully.

Numerical Study on Long-term Behavior of Flat Plate Subjected to In-Plane Compressive and Transverse Loads (바닥하중과 압축력을 받는 플랫 플레이트의 장기거동에 대한 해석적 연구)

  • Numerical studies were carried out to investigate long-term behavior of flat plates, subjected to combined in-plane compressive and transverse loads. For the numerical studies, a computer program of nonlinear finite element analysis was developed. It can address creep and shrinkage as weel as geometrical and material nonlinearity, and also it can address various load combinations and loading sequences of transverse load, in-plane compressive load and time. This numerical method was verified by comparison with the existing experiments. Parametric studies were performed to investigate the strength variations of flat plates with four parameters; 1) loading sequence of floor load, compressive load and time 2) uniaxial and biaxial compression 3) the ratio of dead to live load 4) span length. Through the numerical studies, the behavioral characteristics of the flat plates and the governing load combinations were examined. These results will be used to develop a design procedure for the long-term behavior of flat plates in the future.

A Study on the Design and Control of a Ultra-precision Stage (초정밀 스테이지 설계 및 제어에 관한 연구)

  • The ultra-precision stage is demanded for some industrial fields such as semiconductor lithography, ultra-precision machining, and fabrication of nano structure. A new stage was developed for those applications in order to obtain nano meter resolution. This stage consists of symmetric double parallelogram mechanism using flexure hinges. The mechanical properties such as strength of the flexures and deformations along the applied force were analyzed using FEM. The stage is actuated by a piezoelectric actuator and its movement was measured by a ultra-precision linear encoder. In order to improve positioning performance, a PID controller was designed based on the identified second order transfer function. Experimental results showed that this stage could be positioned within below 5 nm resolution irrespective of hysteresis and creep by the controller.

  • Our country has been surrounded an advantageous around condition by sea on three sides. But the development into the sea, for a lack of systematic database on the marine total information network for a foundation information and research infra construction. This marine total information network will be not contribute to an advance of domestic marine industry through information's common ownership but also international competitiveness strength.
