In this study, a method predicting the displacement responseof structures from the measured dynamic strain signal is proposed by using a mode decomposition technique. Dynamic loadings including wind and seismic loadings could be exerted to the bridge. In order to examine the bridge stability against these dynamic loadings, the prediction of displacement response is very important to evaluate bridge stability. Because it may be not easy for the displacement response to be acquired directly on site, an indirect method to predict the displacement response is needed. Thus, as an alternative for predicting the displacement response indirectly, the conversion of the measured strain signal into the displacement response is suggested, while the measured strain signal can be obtained using fiber optic Bragg-grating (FBG) sensors. To overcome such a problem, a mode decomposition technique was used in this study. The measured strain signal is decomposed into each modal component by using the empirical mode decomposition(EMD) as one of mode decomposition techniques. Then, the decomposed strain signals on each modal component are transformed into the modal displacement components. And the corresponding mode shapes can be also estimated by using the proper orthogonal decomposition(POD) from the measured strain signal. Thus, total displacement response could be predicted from combining the modal displacement components.

In this study, a method predicting the displacement response of structures from the measured dynamic strain signal is proposed by using mode decomposition technique. Evaluation of bridge stability is normally focused on the bridge completed. However, dynamic loadings including wind and seismic loadings could be exerted to the bridge under construction. As previous studies on the prediction of displacement response by using the FBG sensors, the static displacement has been mainly predicted. For predicting the dynamic displacement, it has been known that the measured strain signal includes higher modes and then the predicted dynamic displacement can be inherently contaminated by broad-band noises. To overcome such problem, a mode decomposition technique was used. Mode decomposition technique estimates the displacement response of each mode with mode shape estimated to use POD from strain signal and with the measured strain signal decomposed into mode by EMD. This is a method estimating the total displacement response combined with the each displacement response about the major mode of the structure. In order to examine the mode decomposition technique suggested in this study model experiment was performed.
The hull monitoring systems of container ships with four long-base gages give enough information for identifying the hull girder loads such as bending and torsional moments. But such a load-identification for container ships has not been known. In this paper, a load-identification method is suggested in terms of a linear matrix equation that the measured strain vector equals to the multiplication of the transformation matrix and the desired strain component vector. The equation is proved to be mathematically complete by the property of positive-definite determinant of the transformation matrix. The method is applied to a hull stress monitoring system for 8100TED container ship during sea trial, and the estimated external loads illustrate reasonable results in comparison with the pre-estimated results. This moment decomposition concept has also been tested in real operation conditions. The typical phenomena over the Suez Canal illustrated very suitable results comparing with the physical understandings. Henceforth, one can effectively use the proposed concept to monitor the hull girder loads such as bending and torsional moments.

This paper describes a reinforced concrete crack model, which utilizes a strain decomposition technique. The strain decomposition technique enables the explicit inclusion of physical behavior across the cracked concrete surface such as aggregate interlock and dowel action rather than intuitively defining the shear retention factor. The proposed concrete crack model is integrated into the commercial finite element software ABAQUS shell elements through a user-supplied material subroutine. The FE results have been compared to experimental results reported by other researchers. The proposed bridge FE model is capable of predicting the initial cracking load level, the ultimate load capacity, and the crack pattern with good accuracy.

Generally, estimations on the displacement as an important factor in evaluating the safety of large structures could be a barometer assessing whether the condition of the structure is deteriorating. Practically, it is not easy how to measure the displacement response to large structures like suspension bridges. In this study, as a method for estimation displacement response from strain signals, mode decomposition technique is proposed. Total displacement response is estimated by superposing quasistatic displacement response and modal displacement responses in dominant modes with larger contributions after estimating the modal displacement responses. If foiled strain gauges are used to measure strain signals, there would likely to generate electric noise, what's more, the more measuring points there are the more economic burden it could be. In order to solve such problems, fiber optic bragg-grating(FBG) sensors were used, which have multi-point measurements with no effect on electric noises. Therefore, the experiment was performed through dynamic load test of suspension bridge and plate-girder bridge to review the possibility for using mode decomposition technique.

This paper is concerned with nonlinear modeling and efficient numerical simulation of electrostrictive materials and structures. Two types of such materials are considered: relaxor ferroelectric ceramics and electrostrictive polymers. For ceramics, a geometrically linear formulation is developed, whereas polymers are studied in a geometrically nonlinear regime. In the paper, we focus on constitutive modeling first. For the reversible constitutive response under consideration, we introduce the augmented Helmholtz free energy, which is composed of a purely elastic part, a dielectric part and an augmentation term. For the elastic part, we involve an additive decomposition of the strain tensor into an elastic strain and an electrostrictive eigenstrain, which depends on the polarization of the material. In the geometrically nonlinear case, a corresponding multiplicative decomposition of the deformation gradient tensor replaces the additive strain decomposition used in the geometrically linear formulation. For the dielectric part, we first introduce the internal energy, to which a Legendre transformation is applied to compute the free energy. The augmentation term accounts for the contribution from vacuum to the energy. In our formulation, the augmented free energy depends not only on the strain and the electric field, but also on the polarization and an internal polarization; the latter two are internal variables. With the constitutive framework established, a Finite Element implementation is briefly discussed. We use high-order elements for the discretization of the independent variables, which include also the internal variables and, in case the material is assumed incompressible, the hydrostatic pressure, which is introduced as a Lagrange multiplier. The elements are implemented in the open source code Netgen/NGSolve. Finally, example problems are solved for both, relaxor ferroelectric ceramics and electrostrictive polymers. We focus on thin plate-type structures to show the efficiency of the numerical scheme and its applicability to thin electrostrictive structures.

We investigated a new longitudinal acceleration wave decomposition method in time domain. The proposed method separates up- and down-stream waves with an axial strain and axial acceleration measured at a single point on the transmission path. The advantages such as low computation load and easy implementation would be possible by developing time domain under the following assumptions; low frequency range, uniform cross sectional area and elastic wave propagation. We confirmed the feasibility and performance of the method through experiment using Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB). The method can be effective in several applications, including active vibration control with wave view point, where real time wave decomposition is necessary.
Hull girder stress monitoring system for container ship uses four long-base-strain-gages at mid-ship to monitor the resultant stresses and the applied moment components of horizontal, vertical and torsional moments. The bending moments are estimated by using the conventional strain-moment relations, however, the torsional moment related to the warping strain requires the assumption of the shape of torsional moments over the hull girder. Though this shape could be a sine function with an adequate period, it largely depends upon certain empirical formulas. This paper introduces additional four long-base-strain-gages at mid-ship to derive the longitudinal slope of the warping strain because this slope is directly related to the torsional moment by Bi-moment concept. An open-channel-type cantilever beam has been selected as a simplified model for container ship and the result has proved that the suggested concepts can estimate the torsional component accurately. Finally this method can become reliable technique to derive all external moments in hull girder stress monitoring system for container ships.
A numerical algorithm for plane stress and shell elasto-plasticity is presented in this paper. The proposed strain decomposition (SD) algorithm is an elastic predictor/plastic corrector algorithm, and in the context of operator splitting, is a return mapping algorithm. However, it differs significantly from other return mapping algorithms in that only the necessary response functions are used without invoking their gradients, and the stress increment is updated only at the end of the time step. This makes the proposed SD algorithm more suitable for materials with complex yield surfaces and will guard against error accumulation during the time step. Comparative analyses of structural systems using the proposed strain decomposition (SD) algorithm and the iterative radial return (IRR) algorithm are presented. The results demonstrate the accuracy and usefulness of the proposed algorithm.

This study aims at reporting a systematic procedure for evaluating the static and dynamic structural performance of steel bridges based on a short-period structural health monitoring measurement. Sungsu bridge located in Korea is considered as a case study presenting the most recent tests carried out to examine the bridge condition. Short-period measurements of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) system were used during the bridge testing phase. A novel symmetry index is introduced using statistical analyses of deflection and strain measurements. Frequency Domain Decomposition (FDD) is implemented to the strain measurements to estimate the bridge mode shapes and damping ratios. Furthermore, Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) is also implemented to examine the reliability of bridge performance while ambient design trucks are in static or moving at different speeds. Strain, displacement and acceleration were measured at selected locations on the bridge. The results show that the symmetry index can be an efficient and useful measure in assessing the steel bridge performance. The results from the used method reveal that the performance of the Sungsu bridge is safe under operational conditions.
