  • In this study, a hybrid composite journal bearing composed of carbon fiber reinforced phenolic composite liner and metal backing was manufactured to solve the seizure problem of metallic journal bearing materials because the carbon fiber has self-lubricating ability and the phenolic resin has thermal resistance characteristics. To estimate the wear resistance of carbon fiber phenolic composite, wear tests were performed at several pressures and velocities. The oil absorption characteristics, coefficient of thermal expansion, strength and stiffness of the composite were also tested. Using the measured stiffness values, the thermal residual stresses in the composite were calculated to check the reliability of the composite journal bearing.

  • Sandwich plates are widely used in lightweight design due to their high strength and stiffness to weight ratio. Due to the heterogeneous structure of sandwich plates, they can exhibit local instabilities (wrinkling), which lead to a sudden loss of stiffness in the structure. This paper presents an analytical solution to the wrinkling problem of sandwich plates. The solution is based on the Rayleigh-Ritz method, by assuming an appropriate deformation field. In contrast to the other approaches up to now, this model takes arbitrary and different orthotropic face layers, finite core thickness and orthotropic core material into account. This approach is the first to cover the wrinkling of unsymmetric sandwiches and sandwiches composed of orthotropic FRP face layers, which are most common in advanced lightweight design. Despite the generality of the solution, the computational effort is kept within bounds. The results have been verified using other analytical solutions and unit cell 3D FE calculations.

  • Thin films easily wrinkle under compressive loading due to their small bending stiffness resulting from their tiny thickness. For a thin film deposited on a functionally graded substrate with non-uniform stiffness exponentially changes along the length span in this paper, the uniaxial wrinkling problem is solved analytically in terms of hyper-Bessel functions. For infinite, semi-infinite and finite length systems the wrinkling load and wrinkling wavenumber are determined and compared with those in literature. In comparison with a homogeneous substrate-bounded film in which the wrinkling pattern is uniform along the length span, for a functionally graded substrate-film system the wrinkles accumulate around the softer location of the functionally graded substrate. Therefore, the effective length of the film influenced by the wrinkles decreases, the amplitude of the wrinkles on softer regions of the functionally graded substrate grows and the wrinkling load of the functionally graded substrates with higher softening rate decreases more. The results of the current research are expected to be useful in science and technology of thin films and wrinkling of the structures especially living tissues.

  • Main goal of this study is to develop MATLAB programming for exact analysis of distortional deformation of the straight box girder. For this purpose, a theory for distortional deformation theory is firstly summarized and then a BEF (Beam on Elastic Foundation) theory is presented using analogy of the corresponding variables. Finally, the governing equation of the beam-column element on elastic foundation is derived. An element stiffness matrix of the beam element is established via a generalized linear eigenvalue problem. In order to verify the efficiency and accuracy of the element using exact dynamic stiffness matrix, buckling loads for the continuous beam structures with elastic foundation and distortional deformations of box girders are calculated.

  • A problem formulation and solution methodology for design optimization of laminated thin-walled composite beams of generic section is presented. Objective functions and constraint equations are given in the form of beam stiffness. For two different problems one for open section and the other for closed section, the objective function considered is bending stiffness about x-axis. Depending upon the case, one can consider bending, torsional and axial stiffnesses. The different search and optimization algorithm, known as Evolution Strategies (ES) has been applied to find the optimal fibre orientation of composite laminates. A multi-level optimization approach is also implemented by narrowing down the size of search space for individual design variables in each successive level of optimization process. The numerical results presented demonstrate the computational advantage of the proposed method "Evolution strategies" which become pronounced to solve optimization of thin-walled composite beams of generic section.

  • Recently, lightweight material is attracting attention as a solution to the problem of fuel efficiency and increasing the need for development. CFRP has been attracting attention as lightweight materials for automobile because it has a high specific stiffness and specific strength compared to steel material. CFRP have a wide range of mechanical properties depending on the laminate condition. In this paper, study on the forming analysis of double-dome model was performed considering CFRP prepreg laminate condition and coefficient of friction. After forming analysis, the result has compared with wrinkling area and vertical strain of fiber to the laminated condition. And then compared with inflow of blank to the laminate condition. Through this paper, we propose the forming analysis methods of CFRP material.

  • Recently it is increased by degrees to construct complex and large lattice structure such as bridge, tower and crane structures. It is very important problem to know dynamic properties of such structures. Authors presented new dynamic response analysis algorithm for rectilinear structure already. This analysis algorithm is combined transfer stiffness coefficient method with Newmark method. Presented method improves the computational accuracy remarkably owing to advantage of the transfer stiffness coefficient method. This paper formulates dynamic response analysis algorithm for plane lattice structure expanding rectilinear structures.

  • In this study a base-isolated liquid storage tank subjected to seismic ground motion is numerically simulated on frequency , domain considering three-dimensional liquid-structure-soil interaction. A hybrid formulation which combines the versatility of finite elements for tank structure and the efficiency of boundary elements for liquid and soil region is adopted for efficient modeling. The base-isolation system using the effective stiffness and damping ratio is also included in this formulation. in order to demonstrate the accuracy and validity of the developed solution the numerical results were compared with the reference solutions in each interaction problem. The effects of the liquid filling ratio and the stiffness of base-isolation system on the behavior of the liquid storage tanks are analyzed.

  • Active surface adjustment of cable net structures is becoming significant when large-size cable net structures are widely applied in various fields, especially in satellite antennas. A general-duty adjustment method based on active cables is proposed to achieve active surface adjustment or surface profile reconfiguration of cable net structures. Piezoelectric actuators and voice coil actuators are selected for constructing active cable structures and their simplified mechanical models are proposed. A bilevel optimization model of active surface adjustment is proposed based on the nonlinear static model established by the direct stiffness method. A pattern search algorithm combined with the trust region method is developed to solve this optimization problem. Numerical examples of a parabolic cable net reflector are analyzed and different distribution types of active cables are compared.

  • In this work, the free vibration problem of a rotating Rayleigh beam is solved using the meshless Petrov-Galerkin method which is a truly meshless method. The Rayleigh beam includes rotatory inertia in addition to Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. The radial basis functions, which satisfy the Kronecker delta property, are used for the interpolation. The essential boundary conditions can be easily applied with radial basis functions. The results are obtained using six nodes within a subdomain. The results accurately match with the published literature. Also, the results with Euler-Bernoulli are obtained to compare the change in higher natural frequencies with change in the slenderness ratio (${\sqrt{A_0R^2/I_0}}$). The mass and stiffness matrices are derived where we get two stiffness matrices for the node and boundary respectively. The non-dimensional form is discussed as well.
