  • Nominal shear strength of concrete beam is the combined strength of concrete shear strength and steel shear strength in current design code. But Torsional moment strength of concrete is neglected in calculation of the nominal torsional moment strength of reinforced concrete beam in current revised code. Tensile stress of concrete strut between cracks is still in effect due to tension stiffening effect. But the tensile stresses of concrete after cracking are neglected in bending and torsion in design. The torsional behavior is similar to the shear behavior in mechanics. Therefore the torsional moment strength of concrete should be concluded to the nominal torsional moment strength of reinforced concrete beam. To verify the validity of the proposed model, the nominal torsional moment strengths according to CEB, two ACI codes(89, 99) and proposed model are compared to experimental torsional strengths of 55 test specimens found in literature. The nominal torsional moment strengths by the proposed model show the best results.

  • This paper presented the results of cyclic loading tests of 7 full-scale beams to column subassemblages with improved connection detail i.e., fillets of the stiffening plates at the column corners and ends of the stiffener-to-beam flange weld. Major findings from the test results were: (1) Fillets reduced the stress concentrations that may cause early brittle fractures and considerably improved the cyclic performance compared to the detail without fillets. (2) As the width of the stiffening plate increased, the stiffness and peak strength increased and energy dissipation capacity decreased. (3) While all specimens failed by a fracture, they could develop a total rotation of 0.04 radian required for special moment resisting frames.

  • The objective of this study was to experimentally investigate the bond-related tension stiffening behavior of flexural reinforced concrete (RC) beams made with lightweight aggregate concrete (LWAC) under various high-cycle fatigue loading conditions. Based on strain measurements of tensile steel in the RC beams, fatigue-induced degradation of tension stiffening effects was evaluated and was, compared to reinforced normal weight concrete (NWC) beams with equal concrete compressive strengths (40 MPa). According to applied load-mean steel strain relationships, the mean steel strain that developed under loading cycles was divided into elastic and plastic strain components. The experimental results showed that, in the high-cycle fatigue regime, the tension stiffening behavior of LWAC beams was different from that of NWC beams; LWAC beams had a lesser reduction in tension stiffening due to a better bond between steel and concrete. This was reflected in the stability of the elastic mean steel strains and in the higher degree of local plasticity that developed at the primary flexural cracks.

  • The tension stiffening effect, which means the maintaining a part of stiffness after cracking of concrete in tensile, exists at a reinforced concrete member because of the concrete softening and bonding stress between cracks. It is required to consider it for precise analysis and evaluation o structural behavior, due to the possibility of discrepancy between the actual behavior and the analysis without considering the tension stiffening effect. Making and adopting a tension stiffening model is the most simple and effective way for considering it at nonlinear analysis which indicated the estimation from models and experimental results were similar each others. The comparisons on RC beam were, also performed in order to analyzed the influence of concrete strength and steel ratio into the structural behavior. They indicated that the results from analysis estimated quite closely to the test results at low steel ratio, however, overestimated at high steel ratio. The overestimation increase linearly as concrete strength or steel ratio increased.

  • This paper presents a novel analytical formulation for the analysis of composite beams with partial shear interaction stiffened by a bolted longitudinal plate accounting for time effects, such as creep and shrinkage. The model is derived by means of the principle of virtual work using a displacement-based formulation. The particularity of this approach is that the partial interaction behaviour is assumed to exist between the top slab and the joist as well as between the joist and the bolted longitudinal stiffening plate, therefore leading to a three-layered structural representation. For this purpose, a novel finite element is derived and presented. Its accuracy is validated based on short-and long-term analyses for the particular cases of full shear interaction and partial shear interaction of two layers for which solutions in closed form are available in the literature. A parametric study is carried out considering different stiffening arrangements to investigate the influence on the short-and long-term behaviour of the composite beam of the shear connection stiffness between the concrete slab and the steel joist, the stiffness of the plate-to-beam connection, the properties of the longitudinal plate and the concrete properties. The values of the deflection obtained from the finite element simulations are compared against those calculated using the effective flexural rigidity in accordance with EC5 guidelines for the behaviour of elastic multi-layered beams with flexible connection and it is shown how the latter well predicts the structural response. The proposed numerical examples highlight the ease of use of the proposed approach in determining the effectiveness of different retrofitting solutions at service conditions.

  • Current climate conditions along with advances in technology make further design and verification methods for structural strength and reliability of wind turbine towers imperative. Along with the growing interest for "green" energy, the wind energy sector has been developed tremendously the past decades. To this end, the improvement of wind turbine towers in terms of structural detailing and performance result in more efficient, durable and robust structures that facilitate their wider application, thus leading to energy harvesting increase. The wind tower industry is set to expand to greater heights than before and tapered steel towers with a circular cross-section are widely used as more capable of carrying heavier loads. The present study focuses on the improvement of the structural response of steel wind turbine towers, by means of internal stiffening. A thorough investigation of the contribution of stiffening rings to the overall structural behavior of the tower is being carried out. These stiffening rings are placed along the tower height to reduce local buckling phenomena, thus increasing the buckling strength of steel wind energy towers and leading the structure to a behavior closer to the one provided by the beam theory. Additionally to ring stiffeners, vertical stiffening schemes are studied to eliminate the presence of short wavelength buckles due to bending. For the purposes of this research, finite element analysis is applied in order to describe and predict in an accurate way the structural response of a model tower stiffened by internal stiffeners. Moreover, a parametric study is being performed in order to investigate the effect of the stiffeners' number to the functionality of the aforementioned stiffening systems and the improved structural behavior of the overall wind converter.

  • Having established the initial geometry and cable force of a typical three span suspension bridge under permanent load, the additional maximum response of the cable and the stiffening girder due to live load are determined, by means of an analytic procedure, considering the girder first hinged at its ends and then continuous through the main towers. The problem of interaction between the cable and the stiffening girder is examined taking under due consideration the second order effects, whereby, through the analogy to a fictitious tensioned beam under transverse load, a closed -form solution is achieved by means of a simple quadratic equation. It is found that the behavior of the whole system is governed by five simple dimensionless parameters which enable a quick determination of all the relevant design magnitudes of the bridge. Moreover, by introducing these parameters, a set of diagrams is presented, which enable the estimation of the influence of the geometric and loading data on the response and permit its immediate evaluation for preliminary design purposes.

  • The mechanical behavior of rectangular foundation plates with perimetric beams and internal stiffening beams of the plate is herein analyzed, taking the foundation design into account. A series of dimensionless parameters related to the geometry of the studied elements were defined. In order to generalize the problem statement, an initial settlements was considered. A numeric procedure was developed for the resolution by means of the Finite Differences Method that takes into account the stiffness of the plate, the perimetric and internal plate beams and the soil reaction module. Iterative algorithms were employed which, for each of the analyzed cases, made it possible to find displacements and reaction percentages taken by the plate and those that discharge directly into the perimetric beams, practically without affecting the plate. To enhance its mechanical behavior the internal stiffening beams were prestressed and the results obtained with and without prestressing were compared. This analysis was made considering the load conditions and the soil reaction module constant.

  • Cracking is considered to be one of the important factors in determining the durability of reinforced concrete structures. When the bending stress exceeds the modulus of rupture of the concrete, cracking form along the length of members. The total load is transferred across these cracks by the reinforcement, but the concrete between cracks is still capable of carrying stresses due to the bond between steel and concrete. This phenomenon is called the tension stiffening effect. The tension stiffening effect is affected by many variables, such as the bond stress, strength of concrete, interrocking of aggregate, type of steel, and dowel action of steel. Also, this tension stiffening effect is usually quite significant in beams under service loading, and must be taken into account in the calculation of deflection and crack widths. In this study, the experiment was carried out on types of specimen, strength of concrete, and steel ratio and finite element analysis were compared in terms of load-deflection relationship, crack pattern.

  • The modified compression field theory is already applied in shear problem at some code(AASHTO-1998) partly. Nominal shear strength of concrete beam is sum of the concrete shcar strength and the steel shear strength in the current design code. But Torsional moment strength of concrete is neglected in the calculation of the nominal torsional moment strength of concrete beam In the current revised code. Tensile stress of concrete strut between cracks is still in effect due to tension stiffening effect. But The tensile stresses of concrete after cracking are neglected in bending and torsion In design. The torsional behavior is similar to the shear behavior in mechanics. Therefore the torsional moment strength of concrete should be concluded in the nominal torsional moment strength of reinforced concrete beam. This paper shows that the torsional moment strength of concrete is caused by the average principal tensile stress of concrete. To verify the validity of the proposed model, the nominal torsional moment strengths according to two ACI codes (89, 99) and proposed model are compared to experimental torsional moment strengths of 55 test specimens found in literature. The nominal torsional moment strengths by the proposed model show the best results.
