  • In this paper, the transient response analysis of the trapezoidal corrugated plate subjected to the pulse load is investigated by the theoretical method. Three types of pulse loads are considered: stepped, isosceles triangular and right triangular pulse loads. The corrugated plates can be represented as an orthotropic plate. Both the effective extensional and flexural stiffness of this equivalent orthotropic plate are considered in the analysis. The plate is stiffened by concentric stiffeners perpendicular to the corrugation direction. The stiffening effect is represented by the discrete stiffener theory. This theoretical results are validated by those obtained from 3D finite element analysis based on shell elements. Some numerical results are presented to check the effect of the geometric properties.

  • The present paper explores nonlinear dynamical properties of piezo-magnetic beams based on a nonlocal refined higher-order beam formulation and piezoelectric phase effect. The piezoelectric phase increment may lead to improved vibrational behaviors for the smart beams subjected to magnetic fields and external harmonic excitation. Nonlinear governing equations of a nonlocal intelligent beam have been achieved based upon the refined beam model and a numerical provided has been introduced to calculate nonlinear vibrational curves. The present study indicates that variation in the volume fraction of piezoelectric ingredient has a substantial impact on vibrational behaviors of intelligent nanobeam under electrical and magnetic fields. Also, it can be seen that nonlinear free/forced vibrational behaviors of intelligent nanobeam have dependency on the magnitudes of induced electrical voltages, magnetic potential, stiffening elastic substrate and shear deformation.

  • This paper is a presentation of a physical model for the elastic-partly plastic behavior of rectangular hollow section pinned struts subjected to static cyclic axial loading and the evaluation of the compressive strength of retrofitted damaged struts. Retrofitting is achieved by welding stiffening plates along the webs of damaged struts. The shape of the elastic and permanent deformations of the strut axis satisfy the conditions at the ends and midspan. Continuous functions of the geometric variables of stress distributions in the yielded zone are evaluated by interpolation between three points along each partly plastic zone. Permanent deformations of the partly plastic region are computed and used to update the shape of the unloaded strut. The necessity of considering geometric nonlinearity is discussed. The sensitivity of the results to the location of interpolation points, the shape of the permanent deformation and material hysteretic properties is investigated.

  • This paper is a presentation of an experimental study about the elastic-partly plastic behavior of rectangular hollow steel pinned struts subjected to static cyclic axial loading and the evaluation of the compressive strength of retrofitted crooked struts. Retrofitting is achieved by welding stiffening plates along the webs of damaged struts. The material follows a quasi-kinematic hardening hysteresis path as observed from coupon tests. Test results are compared to those of an analytical model showing a good agreement for both standard and retrofitted struts. The comparison of different stiffener plate dimensions shows that more efficient strengthening is achieved by using long thin stiffeners rather than short thick ones.

  • Cold Formed Steel members are widely used in today's construction industry. However the structural behavior of light gauge high strength cold formed steel sections characterized by various buckling modes are not yet fully understood. Because of their simple forming and easy connections, the commonly used cold formed sections for beams are C and Z. However both these sections suffer from certain buckling modes. To achieve much improved structural performance of cold formed sections for beams both in terms of strength and stiffness, it is important to either delay or completely eliminate their various modes of buckling. This paper presents various innovative sectional profiles and stiffening arrangements for cold formed steel beams which would successfully contribute in delaying or eliminating various modes of premature buckling, thus considerably improving the load carrying capacity as well as stiffness characteristics of such innovative cold formed sections compared to conventional cold formed steel sections commonly used for beams.

  • In this paper, the contents of numerical in the innovative tender design of the super long-span suspension bridge to be constructed between Myodo and are introduced. The total span length of the bridge, of which the main span is the third in the world so far, reaches 2,260km, and the has the floating type girder which has no vertical points at pylon. Judging from the condition of navigation, wind climate on, and construction cost, it is inevitable to make the central span 1,545m and to the technical level applied to the structural components in the existing suspension system. To realize the innovative super long-span suspension bridge, the close numerical investigations for the structural capacity, aerodynamic serviceability, and dynamic serviceability are carried out by various tools of computational mechanics.

  • Nonlinear models for a thin ring rotating at a constant speed are developed. The geometric nonlinearity of displacements is considered by adopting the Lagrange strain theory for the circumferential strain. By using Hamilton’s principle, the coupled nonlinear partial differential equations are derived, which describe the out-of-plane and in-plane bending, extensional and torsional motions. The natural frequencies are calculated from the linearized equations at various rotational speeds. Finally, the computation results from the nonlinear models are compared with those from a linear model. Based on the comparison, this study recommends which model is appropriate to describe the behavior of the rotating ring.

  • Fundamental issues in static finite element analysis of reinforced concrete panel subjected to biaxial tensile loads are discussed. This paper is trying to bring our attention to the appropriate use of concrete material models such as cracking criteria, tension stiffening model and the steel models which are basically used in the nonlinear finite element analysis of reinforced concrete panels. We mainly investigate the sensitivity of available material models and finite element technologies to the finite element analysis result using our recent reinforced concrete panel experiment result. Throughout this study, we found that the judicious use of the material models and finite element technologies with the sound understanding of structural characteristics can only guarantee the accurate prediction of panel behaviour.

  • An analytical model which can simulate the post-cracking nonlinear behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) members such as bars and panels subjected to uniaxial and biaxial tensile stresses is presented. The proposed model includes the description of biaxial failure criteria and the average stress-strain relation of reinforcing steel. Based on strain distribution functions of steel and concrete after cracking, average response of an embedded reinforcement, a criterion to consider the tension-stiffening effect is proposed using the concept of average stresses and strains. The validity of the introduced model is established by comparing the analytical predictions for reinforced concrete tension members with results from experimental studies. Finally, correlation studies between analytical results and experimental data from biaxial tension test are conducted with the objective to establish the validity of the proposed models and identify the significance of various effects on the response of biaxially loaded reinforced concrete panels.

  • For the initial equilibrium states of cable stayed bridges, this study presents a method to determine initial cable forces through successive iteration of the cable forces to minimize the errors between target moments or displacements and result of nonlinear analysis. Stay cables are modeled by truss elements and least square method was used to minimize the errors. In the structural characteristics of cable stayed bridges, a large axial force is introduced in the pylon and stiffening girder so fictitious section areas are assumed to determine initial cable forces accurately. To verify usefulness and validity of the proposed algorithm, some numerical analysis has been conducted and compared with the existing study.
