  • A new pot chrysanthemum cultivar 'Peace Angel' was bred by cross pollination between 'Peace Yellow' and 'Lompoc' at the Yesan Chrysanthemum Experiment Station. The cross was made in 2003 and 'Peace Angel' was finally selected in 2007 after investigating its characteristics from 2005 to 2007. It flowers in the middle of October under natural conditions in Korea climate, but year-round production is also possible by short day treatment in summer or lighting treatment in winter. Flower shape is anemone type with pink petals and a yellow green center. Flower diameter is about 5.6 cm and the number of flowers per stem is 23.0, respectively. When short day treatment is necessary for manipulation of flower formation, 7 weeks of short day treatment is enough for the production. The shelf life is 22.4 days in the autumn season.

  • Objectives : Peucedani Radix ('Jeonho' in Korean) is the root of Peucedanum praeruptorum or Angelica decursiva. However, the root of Anthriscus sylvestris has usually been distributed as Jeonho. This study was performed to determine the discriminative criteria of Jeonho, focused on distribution in Korean markets. Methods : We have determined identification keys to discriminate each Jeonho samples, through observation of external morphology of original plants, and the research of external and internal morphological features of dried Jeonho herbs. Results : Because of identical to the Korean plant name 'Jeonho', Anthrisci Radix had been came into use as a substitute of Jeonho in Korea during the time of Japanese colonial rule. The original plants of Jeonho and its substitute are discriminated with shape of leaf, leaf margin and color of stem. External morphological features of the medicinal herbs of Jeonho are different in the color of cross-sections, pellucid dot, white powder. Internal morphological points, such as fiber bundle of xylem, seconadary mudullary ray and ray of xylem were also used as discriminative criteria for Jeonho. Further details(e.g. identificaion keys) are in the article. Conclusions : We think that these discriminative criteria will be meaningful in identifying the substitutes and adulterants of Jeonho.

  • Objective : The secondary verification of Leksell Gamma Knife treatment planning system (LGP) (which is the primary verification system) is extremely important in order to minimize the risk of treatment errors. Although prior methods have been developed to verify maximum dose and treatment time, none have studied maximum dose coordinates and treatment volume. Methods : We simulated the skull shape as an ellipsoid with its center at the junction between the mammillary bodies and the brain stem. The radiation depths of the beamlets emitted from 201 collimators were calculated based on the relationship between this ellipsoid and a single beamlet expressed as a straight line. A computer program was coded to execute the algorithm. A database system was adopted to log the doses for $31{\times}31{\times}31$ or 29,791 matrix points allowing for future queries to be made of the matrix of interest. Results : When we compared the parameters in seven patients, all parameters showed good correlation. The number of matrix points with a dose higher than 30% of the maximal dose was within ${\pm}\;2%$ of LGP. The 50% dose volume, which is generally the target volume, differs maximally by 4.2%. The difference of the maximal dose ranges from 0.7% to 7%. Conclusion : Based on the results, the variable ellipsoid modeling technique or variable ellipsoid modeling technique (VEMT) can be a useful and independent tool to verify the important parameters of LGP and make up for LGP.

  • We conducted principal component analyses using the thirty two quantitative characteristics of Najas from South Korea to examine the morphological variation and diagnostic characteristics. As a result of our investigation and the morphometric analyses, each taxon could be identified using the leaf width, shape of the leaf sheath, number of teeth on the leaf margin, number of anther cells, number of areoles in each longitudinal row of seeds, and the ratio of the areole width to the length. Dioecious Najas marina was clearly distinguished from the other monoecious taxa (N. graminea, N. gracillima, N. minor, N. oguraensis, and N. orientalis) by the larger size of the stem, the leaf, the flower and the fruit. The monoecious taxa could be identified using vegetative characteristics except for N. minor and N. oguraensis, which were distinct from each other according to the locule number in the staminate flower.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the micromorphology of vessel wall sculpture such as shape of perforation plate, perforation rim, steepness of perforation plate, occurrence of vestured pit, warty layer and ray-vessel pitting on 13 species of Fagaceae in Korea. The results were summarized as follows ; 1. In the species examined, all sample species except Fagus crenata var. multinervis have simple perforation plate. But Fagus crenata var. multinervis has simple and scalariform perforation plate (it was called to combination perforation plate) in a tree stem. 2. The shapes of perforation rim could be classified into five types; Type A without tail, Type B with small tail on both sides, Type C with long tail on both sides, Type D with tail only one side and Type E with the very short interval between perforations. Among five types, Type Band C have higer frequency of distribution than the others. 3. The steepness of perforation plate measured was about 20 degree on pore zone and 43 degree on outside parts of pore zone. 4. Species with vestured pit were Q. aliena, Q, dentata, Q. variabilis, Fagus crenata var. multinervis, Castanopsis cuspidata var sieboldii, Q. acuta, Q. stenophylla, and Q. glauca. But the extent of vesturing was very slight and vestured pits were observed mainly in ray-vessel pit of some vessel elements. 5. Species with warty layer on the inner surface wall of all vessel elements were Q. acuta, Q. stenophylla, Q. glauca, Fagus crenata var. multinervis and species with warty layer of some vessel elements were Q. aliena, Q, dentata, Q. variabilis, Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii. 6. Species with palisade ray-vessel pit were Q. acuta, Q. stenophylla, Q. glauca, Castanea crenata, Castanea bungeana, Q. aliena, Q. serrata, Q. mongolica, and species with scalariform ray-vessel pit was Fagus crenata var. multinervis and species with oval ray-vessel pit were Q, dentata, Castanopsis cuspidata var sieboldii.

  • Examined were the vegetative and reproductive characters such as external morphology, anatomy (leaf petiole, blade and stem), pollen and nutlet for the taxonomic revision of Elsholtzia in Korea. The inflorescence of all studied taxa of Elsholtzia in Korea is secund and 0.5-10 cm long. Leaves are ovate or nearly and $0.2-10{\times}0.2-6.0cm$. The shapes of inflorescence and leaves are very useful taxonomic characters. The stomata types are anomocytic and diacytic. The morphology of nutlet is ovoid and pitted in surface pattern of exocarp. All studied taxa are myxocarpy. The pollen grains are of medium size and subprolate in shape, and have typical bi-reticulate exine surface. Four species are recognized for Korean Elsholtzia by the identification key and descriptions in this study.

  • Gray mold caused by Botrytis cinerea on Agastache rugosa was occurred at a field of Jinju from 2003 to 2005. The disease symptoms started with water-soaked lesions in the leaves and stem, then these infected lesions became withered, discolored, rotten and died eventually. The fungal pathogen was isolated from the lesions. The fungal conidia were one-celled and mostly ellipsoid or ovoid in shape and light gray in color and $4{\sim}20{\times}4{\sim}13\;{\mu}m$ in size. The fungal conidiophores were $14{\sim}28\;{\mu}m$ in width. The Pathogen formed sclerotia abundantly on PDA. The optimum temperature for mycelial growth and sclerotia formation was $20^{\circ}C$. Pathogenicity of the causal organism was proved according to Koch's postulates. On the basis of symptom, mycological characteristics and pathogenicity test, the fungus was identified as Botrytis cinerea. This is the first report on gray mold of Agastache rugosa caused by B. cinerea in Korea.

  • The sclerotium rot of corn (Zea mays L.) occurred sporadically at the experimental field of Gyeongsangnam-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services in July 2011. The infected stems were water-soaked, wilted, and finally led to the death of the whole plants. White mycelial mats were spread over lesions, and then sclerotia were formed on stem and near soil line. The sclerotia were globoid in shape, white to brown in color and 1-3 mm in size. The hyphal width was $4-8{\mu}m$. The optimum temperature for mycelial growth and sclerotia formation on PDA was 30 on PDA. The typical clamp connections were observed in the hyphae of the fungus grown on PDA. On the basis of mycological characteristics and pathogenicity to host plants, this fungus was identified as Sclerotium rolfsii Saccardo. This is the first report of sclerotium rot on corn caused by S. rolfsii in Korea.

  • This paper proposes a flow-rate control system for industrial valves. Industrial valves are used in piping systems to control the flow rate and pressure. In general, valves used in pipelines are classified into globe valves, butterfly valves, and ball valves according to the shape. Motor, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems are used for operating valves. The flow meter should measure the flow rate when configuring the flow-rate control system. On the other hand, because the flow rate of the valve can be expressed by flow coefficient, a control scheme is proposed using the pressure deviation, which measures at the front and rear of the valve. The transfer function for the valve, according to the control input, was estimated using the signal compression method. Based on the induced transfer function, the disturbance observer was designed to improve the command following the performance of the valve stem. The performance of the proposed control method is compared with the flow-rate control result using the flow meter used.

  • A destructive collar rot disease was found on broad bean (Vicia faba) in several farmer's field located in Changseon-myon, Namhae-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do in 2001. The typical symptoms of the disease were stem rot, crown rot, wilt or blight. Upper parts of the infected stems were mostly blighted and white mycelial mats were spread over lesions and the sclerotia were formed on the stems near soil line. The infection rates of the disease in the surveyed area were ranged from 28.6 to 42.8%. The sclerotia of the fungus readily formed in artificial media such as PDA at $30^{\circ}C$ and its shape was globoid or irregular and size was $1.0{\sim}3.7{\times}1.0{\sim}2.8\;mm\;(av.\;1.0{\sim}2.3\;mm)$ and was brown or dark brown in color. The optimum temperature for growth of the fungus was about $30^{\circ}C$. The typical clamp connections were found in the hypha of the fungus grown on PDA. On the basis of mycological characteristics and pathogenecity test on host plants, the fungus was identified as Sclerotium rolfsii. This is the first report on the collar rot of broad bean caused by Sclerotium rolfsii in Korea.
