Analysis of ultra-low radionuclide concentrations in water samples with baromembrane method

  • This work demonstrates the use of baromembrane method based on reverse osmosis (RO) process. The method is realized on mobile complex, which allows to concentrate and determine ultra-low activity of radionuclides in water cooling ponds of Russian nuclear fuel cycle enterprises. The existence level of radionuclide background creates difficult conditions for identification the contribution of liquid discharges enterprise, as standard monitoring methods have a very high detection level for radionuclides. Traditional methods for determining the background radionuclides concentrations require the selection of at least 500 liters (l) of water, followed by their evaporation to form a dry residue. This procedure with RO membranes requires at least 5 days. It is possible to reduce the time and energy spent on evaporation of hundreds of water liters by pre-concentrating radionuclides in a smaller sample volume with baromembrane method. This approach allows preliminary concentration of water samples from 500 l volume till 20 l volume during several hours. This approach is universal for the concentration of dissolved salts of any heavy metals, other organic compounds and allows the preparation of water countable samples in much shorter time compared to the traditional evaporation method.

  • 최근 들어 소프트웨어 시스템은 점차적으로 복잡해지고 있으며, 고객(customer)은 보다 빠른 개발을 요구하고 있다. 전통적인(traditional) 순차적 접근법 (Sequential Approach)으로는 이러한 압력에 효과적으로 대처할 수 없어 대안으로 반복적 접근법 (Iterative Approach)이 적용되고 있다. 대표적인 반복적 접근법으로는 래쇼날의 단일화된 프로세스 (Rational Unified Process, RUP)가 있다. 그러나 RUP의 표준화된 수행방법은 단계, 반복과 활동들을 모두 순차적으로 수행하는 형태이다. 그 결과, 하나의 반복에서 수행된 하나의 활동은 다음 반복의 해당 활동이 수행될 때까지 기다려야 하는 인력낭비 현상이 발생한다. RUP를 수행하는 방법으로는 선형 접근법, 순차적 접근법, 중첩된 반복 접근법과 Time-boxed 반복 접근법이 제안되었다. 그러나 이들 방법은 인력낭비 현상 또는 적용시 프로젝트 관리의 어려움이라는 문제점을 갖고 있다. 본 논문은 활동들을 동시에 수행하는 방법을 제안하였다. 동시개발 접근법은 인력 낭비 현상을 방지할 수 있으며, 프로젝트 관리의 어려움도 해결할 수 있는 장점을 갖고 있다.

Modified electrical conductivity test method for evaluation concrete permeability

  • Standard test method for bulk electrical conductivity (ASTM C1760) provides a rapid indication of the concrete's resistance to the penetration of chloride ions by diffusion. In this paper a new approach for assessing the bulk electrical conductivity of saturated specimens of hardened concrete is presented. The test involves saturating concrete specimens with a 5 M NaCl solution before measuring the conductivity of the samples. By saturating specimens with a highly conductive solution, they showed virtually the same pore solution conductivity. Different concrete samples yield different conductivity primarily due to differences in their pore structure. The feasibility of the method has been demonstrated by testing different concrete mixtures consisting ordinary and blended cement of silica fume (SF) and calcined perlite powder (CPP). Two standard test methods of RCPT (ASTM C1202) and Bulk Conductivity (ASTM C1760) were also applied to all of the samples. The results show that for concretes containing SF and CPP, the proposed method is less sensitive towards the variations in the pore solution conductivity in comparison with RCPT and Bulk Conductivity tests. It seems that this method is suitable for the assessment of the performance and durability of different concretes containing supplementary cementitious materials.

Numbers Cup Optimization: A new method for optimization problems

  • In this paper, a new meta-heuristic optimization method is presented. This new method is named "Numbers Cup Optimization" (NCO). The NCO algorithm is inspired by the sport competitions. In this method, the objective function and the design variables are defined as the team and the team members, respectively. Similar to all cups, teams are arranged in groups and the competitions are performed in each group, separately. The best team in each group is determined by the minimum or maximum value of the objective function. The best teams would be allowed to the next round of the cup, by accomplishing minor changes. These teams get grouped again. This process continues until two teams arrive the final and the champion of the Numbers Cup would be identified. In this algorithm, the next cups (same iterations) will be repeated by the improvement of players' performance. To illustrate the capabilities of the proposed method, some standard functions were selected to optimize. Also, size optimization of three benchmark trusses is performed to test the efficiency of the NCO approach. The results obtained from this study, well illustrate the ability of the NCO in solving the optimization problems.

  • A new method for ship Inner Shell optimization, which is called Parametric Inner Shell Optimization Method (PISOM), is presented in this paper in order to improve both hull performance and design efficiency of transport ship. The foundation of PISOM is the parametric Inner Shell Plate (ISP) model, which is a fully-associative model driven by dimensions. A method to create parametric ISP model is proposed, including geometric primitives, geometric constraints, geometric constraint solving etc. The standard optimization procedure of ship ISP optimization based on parametric ISP model is put forward, and an efficient optimization approach for typical transport ship is developed based on this procedure. This approach takes the section area of ISP and the other dominant parameters as variables, while all the design requirements such as propeller immersion, fore bottom wave slap, bridge visibility, longitudinal strength etc, are made constraints. The optimization objective is maximum volume of cargo oil tanker/cargo hold, and the genetic algorithm is used to solve this optimization model. This method is applied to the optimization of a product oil tanker and a bulk carrier, and it is proved to be effective, highly efficient, and engineering practical.

선형분수변환을 이용한 제어계설계 (Design of control systems by a linear fractional transformation)

  • The fundamental objective of this paper has been to develop a means for incoporating the concept of the linear fractional transformation more generally and easily into multivariable feedback design procedure. When we design a continuous system, generally, we are constrained by design methods which arise specifically for the system. Also, in the design of descrete systems, it is the same concept. But the approach developed in this paper is very flexible in the view that in spite of being the continuous or discrete, the design can be done using a well known design method in both cases. That is, when we design a contnuous system or discrete system, the design can be done by a standard design method of continuous systmes or discrete ones, depending on the choice of the linear fractional transformation. Therefore, it is noted that this concept has broken the unflexibility of the conventional design rules for multivariable control system. In essence, the concept shows that if a given system is controllable, some desirable design, for examples, pole assignment within prespecified region, optimal controllers with poles within prespecified region etc., could be done easily by transforming a desirable region into a standard region, such as the complex left-half plane or the unit disk, by the chosen linear fractional transformation, and then by designing the transformed system using the well known standard results.

  • Purpose : A new method of lateral cephalometric analysis for midface, focusing on zygomatic bone, was created in this study, and measured in Korean adults. The purposes of this study are understanding about new approach for midfacial depression, especially zygomatic bone, and using to make adequate diagnosis and treatment plan. Materials and methods : In this study, esthetic Korean adults, 25 males and 25 females who were between $0^{\circ}$ and $4^{\circ}$ in ${\angle}ANB$, and between 62% and 70% in P/A facial height ratio, and had normal overbite and overjet, were used. Orbitale(Or) and Soft tissue orbitale(Or') were used for indicators of anteroposterior position of zygomatic area. And, mean value and standard deviation of linear and angular measurements, and ratio about each linear measurements, were obtained. then, standard deviation diagram - wiggle diagram - was made for visualization of results. Results : Mean values, standard deviations and ranges of 19 measurements were obtained, and among them, 5 linear measurements that had large standard deviation were excluded and the others were used for making standard deviation diagram. In standard deviation diagram, the following results were obtained. 1. If the measurements are located on more left side of mean-value-vertical -line, the potential of midfacial hypoplasia are stronger, especially zygomatic area. 2. If the measurements are located on more right side of mean-value-vertical-line, the potential of midfacial hypoplasia are decreased. Conclusion : This study presented a new method of lateral cephalometric analysis focusing on zygomatic bone in Korean adults. We expect that the results of this study can be used as parameter when clinicians make decisions about diagnosis and treatment plan for rehabilitation of esthetics and function. But, it is necessary to prove its usefulness, and to further evaluate the results.

Effect of Catechins, Green tea Extract and Methylxanthines in Combination with Gentamicin Against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa - Combination therapy against resistant bacteria -

  • Objectives: Bacterial resistant infections have become a global health challenge and threaten the society's health. Thus, an urgent need exists to find ways to combat resistant pathogens. One promising approach to overcoming bacterial resistance is the use of herbal products. Green tea catechins, the major green tea polyphenols, show antimicrobial activity against resistant pathogens. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of catechins, green tea extract, and methylxanthines in combination with gentamicin against standard and clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and the standard strain of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa). Methods: The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) values of different agents against bacterial strains were determined. The interactions of green tea extract, epigallate catechin, epigallocatechin gallate, two types of methylxanthine, caffeine, and theophylline with gentamicin were studied in vitro by using a checkerboard method and calculating the fraction inhibitory concentration index (FICI). Results: The MICs of gentamicin against bacterial strains were in the range of $0.312-320{\mu}g/mL$. The MIC values of both types of catechins were $62.5-250{\mu}g/mL$. Green tea extract showed insufficient antibacterial activity when used alone. Methylxanthines had no intrinsic inhibitory activity against any of the bacterial strains tested. When green tea extract and catechins were combined with gentamicin, the MIC values of gentamicin against the standard strains and a clinical isolate were reduced, and synergistic activities were observed (FICI < 1). A combination of caffeine with gentamicin did not alter the MIC values of gentamicin. Conclusion: The results of the present study revealed that green tea extract and catechins potentiated the antimicrobial action of gentamicin against some clinical isolates of S. aureus and standard P. aeruginosa strains. Therefore, combinations of gentamicin with these natural compounds might be a promising approach to combat microbial resistance.

  • 정부와 공공업무에 사용되는 정보의 대부분은 지리정보와 직간접적으로 관련 있으며 따라서, 효율적인 지리정보의 활용과 신뢰성 있는 정보서비스제공을 위해 체계적인 표준의 개발이 가장 근본적이며 시급한 이슈로 대두되고 있다. 우리 나라에서도 1995년 이후 추진해 온 국가지리정보체계 구축사업의 일환으로 표준화부분을 수행하고 있으며, 다양한 표준과 지침이 개발되고 있다. 그러나, 단위사업의 필요에 의한 표준개발과 일관된 표준개발 체계의 부재로 인해 상호호환성과 재사용 등을 통한 중복투자 방지의 근본적인 목적달성이 충분히 반영되지 못하고 있는 실정이다. 본 논문에서는 국제표준화기구인 ISO(International Organization for Standardization)를 기반으로 하여 캐나다 등에서 이미 추진중인 프로파일(profile)을 통한 선진 외국의 표준화 상황을 분석하고, 국가표준개발과정에 적용하기 위한 구체적인 방법을 제시한다. 이러한 표준화 메카니즘을 도입함으로서 국제표준 및 범용표준에 기반 한 국가표준개발 체계를 확립할 수 있으며, 다양한 표준들을 일관된 체계 하에서 개발하여 궁극적으로는 지리정보 및 서비스에 대한 접근과 상호 운용성을 극대화할 수 있을 것이다.

  • 헬리콥터 소음예측은 저소음 헬리콥터 기술 개발에 필수적인 과정이다. 본 논문에서는 헬리콥터 통합성능해석프로그램 CAMRAD-II와 자체개발한 소음해석코드를 이용하여 소음예측 기법을 구축하였다. 또한 헬리콥터 소음 중 가장 큰 원인인 블레이드-와류 간섭 소음을 분석하여 해석기법을 검증하였다. 실제적인 소음예측을 위해 국제민간항공기구(ICAO)에서 기준으로 하고 있는 헬리콥터 소음 측정 비행조건인 Flyover, Approach 조건에 대해서 소음해석을 수행하였으며, 최종적으로 비행시험결과 와의 비교 분석을 통해 해석방법의 적합성을 확인하였다.
